View Full Version : madVR - high quality video renderer (GPU assisted)

If your GPU is too slow to render frames fast enough it will drop frames. Deinterlacing requires your GPU to render twice as many frames so it only has half the time to render each one before it starts dropping frames.
Yes but I think my problem was that I was deinterlacing a progressive source.
Basically, why I should deinterlace a progressive source?
Asmodian
16th February 2018, 20:02
You should not deinterlace a progressive source. Set deinterlacing to "if in doubt, deactivate deinterlacing". If you have progressive sources marked as interlaced they are simply broken files and you have to manually disable deinterlacing.

I did it but I did not know, so I solved by disabling it. The dropped frames I was talking about was related to that to that error I did.
Enormous confusion. Another user @Ryrynz, said I should active the other option 'in doubt active'
So with every non progressive it will be on.
With the option you suggest, I will deinterlace only the interlaced sources.
So what's more convenent?

Referring to .1. I tried with a DVD disc to disabled deinterlacing and to force IVTC. And both solved the dropped frames with that dvd. So it works, as you say It shouldn't [emoji848]
so you are now saying me a interlanced DVD is working correctly with IVTC and you are sure it's not >telecine<?

so you are now saying me a interlanced DVD is working correctly with IVTC and you are sure it's not >telecine<?Nope, unfortunately I've not the DVD next my hands now but I m sure going to test this stuff.
So why a preson should force film mode, forcing so also IVTC? Only in the case the materials that person see are telecine?
How can I see in the media info if a source is telecine?

Many question on different arguments, it's weird I know [emoji23]
I ever used madvr "on the go", never truly understanding what I was enabling or not.
And now I'm going into it so I've a lot of weird questions [emoji849]
steakhutzeee
16th February 2018, 20:18
@huhn but if that dvd is telecine, which way I solved the frame drop disabling deinterlacing?
I should expect that the frames simply continue to drop, instead they don't.
huhn
16th February 2018, 20:38
and yet again telecine deinterlancing is not a general reason for frame dropping it'S your rendertiems and setting that your GPU can't handle.

No, it only activates when it needs to. Just leave things at defaults.. Also you'll need profiles to avoid your frame drops with interlaced content if you're playing with settings.

No, it only activates when it needs to. Just leave things at defaults.. Also you'll need profiles to avoid your frame drops with interlaced content if you're playing with settings. So what's difference? A file can be progressive or interlaced.
So the first, as I read, deinterlace all that is not progressive.
The second deinterlace only the interlaced sources.
It seems the same thing... https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180216/fd2cc67b0e41e9e94cdfba29f0b6a763.jpg
A few post early you suggested to enable the first, now to leave the default, so the second [emoji848]

We said is useless to deinterlace a progressive. So the opposite is an interlaced source, or a telecine. And as we said, I need IVTC for it, and that's another thing respect to deinterlacing.

Is there a media player that supports madVR and can play acestream links?
pirlouy
17th February 2018, 13:58
You can't even update VLC with ace player else acestream links don't work. So no, there are no other media players. Anyway, VLC is the best for this kind of streams.

@madshi: I think we all agree that the "activate only if it comes for free" RCA sub-option is extremely convenient, another sub-option I'd love to see if any possible please would be "activate only if it doesn't drop frames" for luma quadrupling because I'm never really sure whether I can afford it and those "set and forget" options are wonderful. Just try to force it and if it drops frames, go back to "luma doubling"?
"RCA Very High" looks eye-poping BTW :D
:thanks:
Reclock simply likes it "close enough" so you won't notice. It would change the audio speed less if you used a multiple of 23.976 Hz instead of 72 (at least for 24/1.001 fps content)
Playing cinema content in a 23.976Hz multiple means that audio will be 0.1% too slow and yes you can hear the difference when A/B'ing, music will be out of tune for that matter. Only some TV shows are actually meant to be watched at 23.976Hz AFAIK, my point being that 23.976 content is rarely meant to be watched at its native rate :o

Right, anyway music becomes out of tune and you can certainly tell the difference when A/B'ing. It's been shot and is meant to be watched at 24fps, 23.976 is a dodgy legacy from NTSC TV's I believe and there's hardly any genuine 23.976 content out there apart from some TV stuff.

@Asmodian @huhn @ryrynz I think steakhutzeee's issue is that for some reason the upstream filter is not detecting his PAL DVDs as film material and is outputting an interlaced stream to madVR.
@steakhutzeee
1. create two PAL profiles in madVR, one for 'PAL video' and one for 'PAL [film/cinema/progressive/whatever name you prefer]', that way you can then configure the first profile to target a frame time of 20 ms and avoid dropped frames when watching video PAL (e.g. DVD bonuses), and configure the second profile to target a frame time of 40 ms for which you can use higher quality scaling.
Example: if (srcHeight <= 576) and (deintFps < 26) "PAL film"
else if (srcHeight <= 576) "PAL video"2. You need to check your video decoder settings, and possibly your player, and fiddle with the settings until you see "deinterlacing off (says upstream)", like this: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1Qu7jnyd1ldeWStUkIo5RKj2lxJuM5ZR0
If you have some discs where you can't get that result, then as Asmodian said they're probably badly mastered.
If you cannot get that result with any of your PAL DVDs then something is wrong with your decoder/player (for example, with MediaPortal if I play a PAL DVD via the menu, LAV stays in interlaced mode when I start playing the main feature, I have to stop playback and then resume directly from the movie for it to switch to progressive).
If you use LAV Video, 'Deinterlacing Mode' should be on Auto.

Hey. Hope someone can help me. Today I updated k lite codec pack, and when I go full screen bottom bar (seek bar) is the same as in window mode. Before it was just blueish seek bar. It was way better. Is this because of Madvr? Anyone knows how to get it back?

Does anyone use madVR to upscale or enhancement non-motion, still images, photos, textures, etc? I know madVR is meant for motion, but it has so many upscaling and overall options that it seems like it could have advantages over common upscaling techniques used in Photoshop and GIMP, especially for amateur users like me.
MadVR has many more options for upscaling, downscaling, artifact removal, sharpness, and a ton of other functions used in still imagery creation and editing. It would be nice if there were "madVR plugins" for common editing software like Photoshop, GIMP, and Paint.NET. Unless of course :stupid: and madVR features are quite useless for still imagery enhancement.

Yes. That's madvr's exclusive mode seek bar. Go into your player and set madvr as renderer. If need be set madvr to exclusive mode.. Klite shouldn't have changed your madvr settings though.

I do know madshi has plans to allow users to use his algorithms in Avisynth/Vapoursynth, outside of that you'll just have to wait and see.. I doubt you'll see anything this year. So for right now you'll just have to use the screenshot functionality on your upscaled images within your player.

No but you can use the AceStream Player and setup up a stream output that can then be opened up in your favorite madVR capable player:
https://prnt.sc/igafpe
Once the AceStream is running just open this in your player (I use PotPlayer):
http://localhost:8902/tv.asf
This is off-topic and should be discussed elsewhere. But yes it can be done easily, I do it all the time.

madshi has already answered this question:
I may consider creating a Photoshop plugin at some point in the future. There might be different algo speed levels available in the future. But yes, these algos need to be manually adjusted per video, which does reduce their real life suitability.
Photoshop plugins are supported by several Windows photo tools. So it makes the most sense. Any other plugin type is specific to only one tool, which makes no sense to me.

I must admit I don't quite understand exactly what you are trying to say, can you pls elaborate? (Most)All 24 fps cinema content is released as 23.976, or broadcast as fractional framerate, audio is in sync with that framerate and should be watched at that particular refresh or a multiple of it. So, re-syncing to 24 Hz or a multiple would actually mean changing the speed of audio (not necessarily the pitch - this can be retained), not the other way around, AFAIK...
el Filou
18th February 2018, 17:24
If audio is in sync with 23,976 fps then it means it was slowed down from original audio which was in sync with 24,000 fps by 0,1%, or else sound would be out of sync by 7 seconds at the end of a 2 hour movie.
(not that it matters to anyone except people who enjoy A/Bing a 0,1% pitch difference. :))

Music will be out of tune anyway, but this is getting OT I'm afraid so enjoy your movies playing at 99.9% speed if you like: https://www.innerfidelity.com/content/canjam-rmaf2017-people-i-love-mike-moffat-and-his-gadget :)
My point is that 99.9% of 23.976 stored content is meant to be watched at its native 24fps speed, that's all.
Next stop is 25fps PAL speedup so sit tight but good to know that MPC can fix this crap w/o Reclock, might give it a shot then.
mytbyte
18th February 2018, 18:41
@leepery: OK, I get it...you may have the case unless the 23.976 transfer was already not pitch corrected (it's such a small difference that perhaps studios don't bother)...for 25 fps conversion, however, I know that it's quite common practice to pitch-correct (not universal practice, though)...how can you know that when reclocking back to 24 fps?

lavfilter can't decode DVD by it self it is using the MS decoder.
and it is normal that it is send as interlanced even with an soft telecine file and this is technically not wrong so this can be different between dvd and windows versions.

MediaInfo knows little, it scans only technical flags in headers, but doesn't look at video frame contents. That's a job for your eyes and your brain.
Truly progressive video content might still be encoded in interlaced MPEG-2 format. There may be only few DVD Video productions encoded in progressive MPEG-2 video mode (I know only "Animatrix").

yes, for PAL DVD that's correct at file level, but the player will present each half-frame separated in time every 50th of a second when it really needs to weave the fields together as full frame and present it twice for 50Hz display, in order to lose interlace deffects, line twitter and stairstepping on motion...you need progressive flag for that...I have tested and MadVR treats interlaced PAL PsF as video content instead of film unless you force film mode

maybe i didn't make my self clear enough with there is no "auto detection". so if a stream is flagged interlaced madVR will do what you tell it to do with an interlaced stream.
and every mpeg2 stream on a DVD has to be flagged as interlaced that's the spec. that's why they are PsF which is just a progressive stream flagged as interlaced and that'S why a soft telecine NTSC file has to be transform to interlaced 3:2.
this is simplified so not 100 % correct.
