ok, here is what i found out:
- since Windows 10 anniversary update, the 24Hz display mode with GTX1060 isn't working without dropped frames. Same with D3D 9 and 11.
- 60hz mode is working, but with d3d11 exclusive mode, the render queues are not filling.
Now it would be nice to know if other users got the same problems and if this exists with AMD cards also, or if this is a new madvr/anniversary update incompatibility.
Would be nice if you amd guys could do some testing to investigate this further...

Some Intel users seem to have problems with that. I haven't been able to reproduce it yet, unfortunately. You may have to stick to D3D9 and ordered dithering for now.

FWIW, I have a skylake build-up here with an R7-370 I use for bring up and Linux/Mesa testing, loaded also with all the latest Win10 stuff and 24/60Hz appears normal. Connected directly to an HDTV (1080P only) and using FSE with 10bit output, playback of SD and HD only so far.

Seems choosing nvidia cubid as rendering option crashes the application but without nvidia cubid rendering is too slow...
If someone else had the issue i would appreciate some tips ;)

You should use DXVA2 copyback instead of CUVID.
CUVID does not work on Windows 10 if anything else uses OpenCL at the same time (like MadVR when you use NNEDI).

Does anyone has an issue when going FSE D3D11 with potplayer windows 10 anniversary update ? going back to windowed mode is like normal.
It takes like 2 sec of black screen after going FSE and then it showing the video. no stuttering or any other issue, the sound just continue like normal, just the video takes time to show. 60 hz TV HDMI.

It would seem that you are wrong.
The latest LG BD-XL drives work and apparently Leawo's blu-ray player (http://www.leawo.org/tutorial/5-best-4k-blu-ray-players.html#part1) can decode the discs.
He's not wrong. The copy protection on UHD BD has not been broken. Leawo can't play back UHD BD discs even if you have a recent drive that can read the physical discs. People have tried it. It doesn't work. They're misleading people.

I m on optimus on two different laptops... One with gt 525m that hdmi outputs by nvidia and one with 930m that hdmi outputs by Intel hd 5500, on the two laptops fullscreen exclusive mode only improve perfomance and smoothnes of the vídeo, inclusive lowering a litros the render times... Same improvment on hdmi or laptop display... The two laptops with the latest drivers...
You are lucky, or maybe it's the exact sub vendor of GPU / display you are using :D.
With an Acer 791G, 860M and LP173WF4-SPF1_LG , if using exclusive, I either get dropped frames and bad render times, or it crashes completely, generating a log.
When sending the log, there was something seemingly strange with the driver and it crashed because of the driver, but the latest Acver drivers for this model, bought in June last year are very old. Using Nvidia drivers hold an performance improvement in everything, but it crashes sometimes. It seemed to crash more with the original drivers.
Too bad it's not that simple with all laptops :D , maybe someone encounters a similar problem to mine, this should help. It took me 1 week of testing to just accept that it won't work in exclusive and that this is how it works.

Switched back to MPC-BE as HC was causing me audio sync issues. I give up on HC. BE works best with LAV Filters. Fixed my issues.
I wonder when we'll have true 4K monitors with HDR. The lack of content currently is pretty bad too, but I'm glad we're getting somewhere with madvr's support for HDR playback and passthrough.

I did some testing with the new version of madVR, and NNEDI3/OpenCL is still broken in the 32-bit version. Tried both 32-bit MPC-BE and JRiver Media Center, with the same resulting picture corruption. 64-bit still works fine on all 64-bit players.
Just wanted to let you know.

Nowhere in either intel or ATI graphics panel can I specify such a setting. I haven't bothered to dig through the registry, as I know the frame queue number is set and controlled via a reg key.
The issue has persisted across various ATI driver updates. No idea why this is, but I'm glad it's fixed.
FWIW, I don't have this problem with my AMD GPU, and most other users don't have it, either. The only situation where I remember this problem from was with NVidia GPUs when forcing the number of prepresented frames to specific values in the GPU control panel instead of using "application defined". That's why I mentioned that. Maybe the cause of the issue is different in your case. But if you found a workaround, that's fine, I guess.
Edit: I want to second uoppi's suggestion to add the old upscale refinement option as a trade performance tickbox.
Which exact behaviour do you mean? That upscaling refinement becomes active, when it didn't before? Or the resolution upscaling refinement is performed in?

Decoding HEVC 4k video is very hard. Most CPUs can't do it. You need a GPU which can do hardware HEVC decoding. Only the newest GPUs can do it. This has probably nothing to do with madVR, if it's a decoding issue.

There's tone mapping and gamut mapping. Tone mapping means converting HDR luminance down to SDR. Gamut mapping means reducing saturation to make out-of-gamut colors in-gamut.
There always was an option ("compress highlights") which allowed you to choose whether tone mapping should be performed with a compression curve, of with clipping. This option still exists and has still the same effect.
All previous madVR builds always clipped gamut mapping, though. The latest madVR build now always does compressed gamut mapping instead of clipping - but only when using "preserve hue" in "high quality". Otherwise gamut mapping still uses clipping. The "compress highlights" option has no effect on gamut mapping.

There are multiple HDR processing options now, and whether a 3DLUT in calibration options is used or ignored depends on which HDR processing option is chosen:
1) "passthrough HDR content to the display": The calibration 3DLUT is ignored, because running untouched HDR content through an SDR 3DLUT can't possibly produce correct results.
2) "convert HDR content to SDR by using pixel shader math". This option fully converts HDR content to SDR, and after having done that, the video is treated just like any other SDR video. So in this case, the calibration 3DLUT is being applied.
3) "convert HDR content to SDR by using an external 3DLUT". In this case calibration is probably already applied by the HDR -> SDR 3DLUT selected in the HDR settings, so the calibration 3DLUT is ignored. Appying two different 3DLUTs in a row would be weird.
4) "process HDR content by [...]". For these two options madVR outputs HDR content to the display. The display will apply its own tone+gamut mapping, and we don't know which algorithms it will use for that. So in this situation it doesn't make sense to run the data through an SDR calibration 3DLUT, so it's ignored.

When sending HDR to the display, obviously PQ is used instead of gamma. The gamut can be selected in the HDR settings page. When converting HDR to SDR by using an HDR -> SDR external 3DLUT, the 3DLUT decides the output gamma + gamut.

Most probably a GPU driver problem.

The resolution the superres occurs in. eg:
old behavior: 720p->1440p-> 1080p -> superres
new behavior: 7720p->1440p->superres->1080p
I've pretty much nailed down that this is why my framerates are too low now. If I turn off superres (and all other upscale refiners) I get similar rendering times to before.
I agree that doing superres before the downscale should offer better image quality, but as it is now, I can't even afford to run superres1 at 1440p, which is already inferior to superres2 at 1080p.

Hey Sunset, I noticed last night that the 23.976 refresh rate has changed slightly using my custom resolution with my GTX 970 so am also now getting dropped frames. Used to report every 4 hours or so but is now saying a dropped frame every 20 mins, presumably since the W10 update too.
Have you tried adjusting your custom resolution in the Nvidia control panel to compensate? I'm due to swap my 970 out for a 1060 this weekend so will see how that fairs and report back anyway.

Since we don't know what OS, GPUs, drivers you're using, we can't really help you.
But FSE is the best option for me as well (see my signature).
When you have strange problems, it's probably thanked to driver issues. You have to experiment with them (chipset, sound, igpu, gpu drivers and who knows what else :) ), and not just what you can find on your vendors page but getting them from the manufacturer's site.
I stopped refreshing them a couple of months ago (as you can see), and I'll never touch them again until they work:
- early (1-2 years old) Intel iGPU drivers couldn't handle FSE new path properly, old path was good (the one I'm using now is good with it)
- newer nVidia drivers (>=36x.xx) changed the way how switching works between different power states (in the wrong way), and they can't add any new features without upgrading hardware, hence I'm using the 355.xx .
And I switched off auto-update straight away after installing Win8.1 (2 years ago), I'll do it if I want it, but until all is working fine, I won't touch it.
Remember one of the golden rules in IT: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" :D
(I'll only try new Intel iGPU drivers, if the long awaited CRU (https://communities.intel.com/thread/78158?start=105&tstart=0) will be finally implemented in the proper way)

Hey chros have you tried DTD calculator? Worked perfect to me, its a little bit more complicated than CRU but once you understand you can Get perfect timings from that

The same goes for borderless windowed mode. When excessively hovering the mouse from the video image at the seekbar and back, glitches or drops will occur.
But I think this has always been the case.

Having it also on a R9 390.
In borderless windowed, showing the seekbar leads to present glitches and in FSE (tested DX11), render queue gets empty and thus drops occur.
I personally don't care much about it, as long as normal playback is stable.
I've been totally happy with the latest madVR builds btw., 0 problems to report.
Edit: I'm not using FSE either. I don't see any reason to do so since improved DWM of Windows 8/10 is totally stable. Maybe there will be a need for it again in future for HDR output, maybe not...
However, I changed back my settings to disabled deringing filter to be able to use a SuperRes strength of 3 again.
super-xbr with high sharpness + deringing looks very clean, but without SR3 quite bloated with rising scaling factor, unfortunately. And deringing + SR3 can also look really awful with filmed content and not just cartoon, produces "aliased ringing" outta hell.
NNEDI3 + SR, a keeper forever...

This is expectad to happen, its called low latency mode, when the seekbar appears the present queue is reduced to faster reponde from the player UI... Madshi implemented this sometime ago

After Anniversary Update for Windows 10 in MPC-HC + LAV Filters + madVR with Chroma Upscalling option set to NNEDI3 64 neurons, when watching movies and clicking CTRL+J, there is chroma > Jinc AR instead NNEDI3. When I choose other options everything is correct, only with NNEDI3 it shows Jinc AR. Do you also have such problem?

By the way, could you please add a profile variable for “Output Bit Depth” to create profiles for 10 bit output?

I just found out what caused my framedrops since windows 10 anniversary update:
It's the "reduce banding artifacts" setting. I never had problems with it before the win10 update, but now it's causing my frame drops. I have to check "don't render frames when fade in/out is detected" under the trade quality for performance tab. It's now working again without frame drops with that option checked.
other than that I have no problems with the newest win10 build and madvr. :)

Thanks for your advice. Just checked it on my system but I do not notice any difference. custom resolution is working like before with newest win10 and 369.09 nvidia drivers.

FSE is supposed to do that, it isn't madVR being glitchy. The GPU driver is switching between exclusive and windowed modes. You cannot show the right click menu in exclusive mode so it must drop out of FSE when you right click.
I also do not use exclusive mode due to this and other similar issues but don't blame madVR for it being glitchy or expect it to change.
The seek-bar is a separate issue, but before the change UI latency could be very high when using high queues.

I will write in the how to Get smooth playback... Thread it s in my to do list but i did not have time... Let me see if i can this weekend... I take sometime to write this things because english is not my native language...
But i can say for now its not so complicated if know how to use CRU, i take some time but learned alone how to config...

I'm aware of what's happening, but it keeps flicking between windowed and exclusive and as a result I can't actually do anything. I also sometimes just get a black screen and I have to drop the media player back to a windowed display for the video to show again (using MPC-BE) Haven't tried others for comparison.
Queues aren't high IMO, 16 frames in advance, 24 for CPU and 16 for GPU. I believe these sorts of sizes are required for the best Smooth Motion playback.

The crazy thing is that for a 1080p video i have around 38ms, shouldn't the rendering time be higher on 1080p since there is upscaling?
Seems after some testing that my cpu is going to 100% load, does that mean that the rendering happens on the igp?

I do not know about the flickering, I do not have anything like that with Zoom Player.
Queues aren't high IMO, 16 frames in advance, 24 for CPU and 16 for GPU. I believe these sorts of sizes are required for the best Smooth Motion playback.
Those are very high queues IMO, I use very low queues (4 to 6 for GPU) with smooth motion and never have presentation glitches or dropped frames. I also use smooth motion, what happens with lower queue sizes that makes you believe the queues need to be higher?

That's weird i have no problem at all running the same movie without madvr.
I tried two players, potplayer and mpc-hc, i can run potplayer at ~30ms with the lanczos settings from here : https://wiki.mikejung.biz/MadVR#DXVA2_Focused_2
Same settings on mpc-hc i have 120~130ms for the rendering.
I use lanczos 3taps for chroma upscaling, NNEDI3 had too much time to the rendering.

That's weird i have no problem at all running the same movie without madvr.
I tried two players, potplayer and mpc-hc, i can run potplayer at ~30ms with the lanczos settings from here : https://wiki.mikejung.biz/MadVR#DXVA2_Focused_2
Same settings on mpc-hc i have 120~130ms for the rendering.
I use lanczos 3taps for chroma upscaling, NNEDI3 had too much time to the rendering.
So my issue is cpu related? I have a 4790k :/
You have two issues, rendering times do not include CPU decode time.
If your CPU is at 100%, software decoding is probably too slow and nothing you change in madVR will achieve smooth playback. 4K HEVC is very hard, even a 4790K will have trouble using software decoding. I do not know why potplayer would be different than MPC-HC, when using LAV -> madVR the player shouldn't matter. They must be using different settings.
Always double is going to cause trouble with 4K.
I have to add that I hate those "use these settings" guides, usually they are odd/crazy right away or after only a few months. :p
The ones in your link are very odd/crazy (and old). :confused:
edit: madVR, even without image scaling active, is much higher quality and needs a lot more GPU power than EVR. It is not surprising you can play 4K HEVC fine without madVR and while using hardware decoding. Maybe the integrated LAV filters in MPC-HC uses different setting than the one pot player uses?

It's not what happens exactly, it's what I saw in one or two posts.
Madshi, can you clarify whether we can rely on the OSD stats to determine whether the queues are set suitably for best results with Smooth Motion? Or are there exact minimums required? Specifically for 24 fps content on a 60hz screen.

So your advice is to dig into every setting myself and find a proper setting that will work for me then? got it :)
I have no idea, i've never been into this before so i am clueless on a lot of topics, truth is i never had to calibrate a screen before or a video player for that matter, this is a new territory to explore and not an easy one i might say.
For me using videoplayer and codec was until that day download this and double-click .exe file lol

You misunderstand. MadVR displays the image and the video filters decode the image. If you have high CPU usage then it's not madVR that's causing it, it's the decoding of the 4K content itself by LAV or internal filters of MPC/Potplayer which as Asmodian stated is very intensive for even a quad core Intel processor.

Hi,
I have zoom black bars away set and doubling set for >1.2, so basically a 2.35:1 film gets doubled and then downscaled to exactly fit my 16:9 screen. I've been playing around with upscaling refinement and for some reason crispen edges makes zero difference to the image, even set at 4. Enhance details makes a difference and at 4 it looks awful so i'd expect 4 to be quite a strong setting, but crispen edges has no effect on the image at all. Anyone else seen that?

Ahh, there we go..
Try increasing the GPU queue size and the number of pre-presented frames for exclusive mode. Smooth motion FRC benefits from bigger queues.

Hello all,
i hope you might be able to help me with an issue in regards to 3D.
I am trying to enable/configure 3D with madvr on my htpc using:
GTX 970 (latest driver) for WIN10 64 bit
AVR Denon 6200
LG 4k TV
madvr latest version
I am able to play framepacked 3D files if i enable stereo 3D in the nvidia control panel so far so good but as soon as a 2D file is played and i try to play a 3D file again afterwards, madvr is not able to activate/trigger 3d mode again.
What i recognized is that enabling and disabling the "stereo switch" using the nvidia control panel also activates the windows 3D switch but
activating/deactivating the windows switch does not activate the nvidia switch...thats the issue as it seems.
Madvr seems to trigger the windows switch is that correct? And thus is not able to activate the nvidia switch as well.
Settings in madvr are/seem to be correct as it is working one time and it was working before as well...
