Has anything changed lately with madTPG? I use both Calman and LightSpace via a laptop to calibrate my Sony 940E HDR display using madTPG as the pattern generator on my HTPC. With both programs this evening, madTPG would disconnect randomly in the middle of taking reads. My network is solid and did not drop, so i am not sure what is causing this behavior. Being that this behavior is happening with both Calman and Light Space, makes me think the issue is with madTPG. Calman, Light Space and madvr are all on the latest version.

I re-calibrated recently using v0.91.11 madTPG and CalMAN (5.7.2.61). I don't think anything is wrong with madTPG.

Hi,
I have started using madvr for stereoscopic 3d playback with good results. The problem is 3d gets enabled on my television even when a 2D file (of 1080p resolution) is played. I have to manually disable nvidia stereoscopic 3D to get normal 2D playback. I am on a gtx 1080 (Win10 - 378.92 for hdr playback which works fine). Is there some way i can configure madvr to only trigger 3D on display when a 3D file is playing.

Quick question regarding 3D LUT calibration: what is the best practice for calibrating a projector? Using fullscreen patterns or windowed patterns (with black desktop on the background)? I guess the extra light in the room when using fullscreen patterns have an impact on measurements. I have the feeling that windowed patterns better render actual playback.

I understand that total light into the sensor is important for accuracy and the intensity of light reflected not off the screen should be low and largely match the color of the pattern.
Full screen patters are recommended, unless the display changes brightness based on total photons out (e.g. plasma).

this type of blue scrren is often cause by outdated driver or driver conflicts.
in rare causes this a memory corruption or system file corruption and very rarely a software problem.
so update your drivers and post your system specs with current windows version and have a look at the event viewer in hope not find something more
i guess your madVR settings are default?
have a look at this and see if something is similar.

After a bit of research it seems this is how nvidia sets stereoscopic 3d. 1080/24p is always enabled in 3d mode. Some users have written scripts to enable/disable 3d. I was trying to do enable/disable madvr 3d in the same script. Are there any command line options to do this please?

Since I swapped my TV for a different model, I can't get the composition rate to match the display's refresh rate when using MadVR (in both MPC-HC and Kodi). Example:
Default refresh = 50 Hz
Start watching 23.976 FPS video
Display's refresh rate changes to 23.976 FPS automatically by MPC-HC/Kodi
MadVR "Display" stat says 23.976
MadVR "Composition rate" says 50
I've also seen it the other way around (display 50, composition rate 23.976) - it might be that the composition rate is the frame rate of the previous video? I have Kodi set to change the refresh rate as needed (never changed this setting). I've tried D3D9, D3D11, toggling MadVR's automatic refresh rate change on and off, and other things I've forgotten. The solution offered by huhn from a year ago - switching to Fullscreen Exclusive mode - doesn't work for me. The behaviour changes to this:
Default refresh = 50 Hz
Start watching 23.976 FPS video
Display's refresh rate changes to 23.976 FPS automatically by MPC-HC/Kodi
MadVR "Display" stat says 25
So basically it's still wrong. I am very sensitive to stutter so there's no way this has been happening until very recently - I'd have noticed otherwise. I'm using the latest build of Kodi DSPlayer and MadVR. In every case the display refresh rate is correct, according to both MadVR and the display itself, it's just the composition rate that's wrong. I'm using Windows 7 on this box with an nVidia GT 430 GPU. Any ideas? I can see some old posts from 2010 about issues with Aero and dual-monitor setups - maybe the HTPC still thinks the old display is attached or something? It only shows "generic PNP monitor" in Device Manager. I am not sure if swapping the TVs caused it or a recent build of MadVR introduced the problem.

As I said, FSE doesn't help. I've also tried MadVR 0.90.24 and it made no difference.
What I've done for now is set both Kodi and MPC-HC to not change refresh rates and let MadVR do it instead. So far, this seems to fix the problem, but I'm not sure if it will have other negative consequences.

Hello everyone,
I am evaluating (benchmarking) madvr with the lowest Nvidea 10 series GPU,
the 1030, and ran into a problem trying to get DXVA downscaling option to
work using a 4k HEVC demo clip, "LG Chess". Here is a screenshot of the
clip using bilinear downsizing:

As you can see. the DXVA clip does show that downsizing occurs, but there
seems to be a problem with the YCrCb <-> RBG conversion at output. You can
see the madvr downsizing screen on the right, and a GPUShark window below.
Perhaps I haven't set somthing correctly to get this to work, or it may be
a bug. I'm hoping someone may know what the problem is at first glance.
I'm under windows 7, (near) latest LAV filters, Nvidia drivers, madvr, and
MPC-BE.
(Also as you can see, using DXVA downsizing is hugely more efficient than
even simple bilinear downsizing)

DXVA downsizing is incompatible with HDR content, because DXVA is not aware of the HDR nature of the content.

My 960 2GB wouldn't downscale 4K HDR 60FPS to Full HD even using DXVA for long without stuttering. If I start playing this content will need a 1060 at least.

strange i can do about everything at 1080p output using a 960.
the HDR SDR conversation takes a lot of processing power but that to be expected but that doesn't mean it is resource hungry.

Yeah I don't get what's causing it, RAM usage is low (apparently) the GPU utilization isn't high.. but it just can't cope. non HDR 4K 60FPS is fine, I haven't tested many HDR clips but this one (http://demo-uhd3d.com/fiche.php?cat=uhd&id=159) stutters almost straight away no matter what I change.

Its a bit of a known limitation that other refresh rate switchers can cause such issues if they don't do the switch before madVR is loaded entirely, otherwise it might not pick it up properly. Using the madVR switcher has certain advantages anyway, the app doesn't have to guess the frame rate, madVR gets told by the video decoder.

if you get the wrong refreshrate in FSE than the program that changes the refreshrate did it wrong.
if you don't want to use FSE or overlay there is is always a change the composition rate will not match. http://bugs.madshi.net/view.php?id=204
changing the screen will disable the madVR display mode because they are created for that one screen.
in your windowed issue you have composition rate issue and in the.
in your FSE issue the issue comes from a program whatever that may be... using the wrong refresh rate.

I'm afraid to me this looks like a bug. This happens with 10 bit sources, regardless of HDR encoding or not. This is not an issue with EVR, which must use the same DXVA drivers. If this gets fixed, the next issue would then be the proper HDR -> SDR encoding before RGB output to the 8-bit monitor. Here, EVR color output must be adjusted by the player to get good looking HDR, which is annoying. If madvr could get this right, it would be a win :)

I think this is a driver bug. The difference between EVR and madVR that would cause only madVR to show the bug is that EVR never needs the data back from DXVA2, madVR on the other hand needs the data back.
There is a driver bug that causes wrong colors when getting 10-bit data back from DXVA2 decoding/scaling.
madVR is very good at HDR -> SDR and it provides multiple ways to accomplish it. I certainly approve of the quality of madVR's HDR -> SDR and I don't need to fiddle with the settings to get good results. Just don't use DXVA for anything.

I tried using the madvr toggles in the rendering->stereo 3D tab for 2d/3d content. The problem is that the os 3d setting does not correctly mirror the nvidia stereo 3d settings. OS 3D does disable nvidia 3d, but nvidia 3d does not get enabled when OS 3d is enabled. This might be new behaviour in windows 10 (creators update).
I have scripts to enable stereo 3d in nvidia, and I tried using profiles to enable/disable 3d, but it seems running batch files on profile enable is broken?
I haven't had any replies to my 3d queries till now, have people completely given up on stereoscopic 3d movies?

3840x2159p23 may work.
videos may need downscaling now and who knows what the TV does with that input. i highly recommend a custom refreshrate with 3840x2160p23 . and please be aware that getting closer to 23.976 doesn't mean it is getting better.

Since there is no "OFF" option (or at least one that I can find) for mVR image downscaling, chroma upscaling & image upscaling, can you please tell me which option(s) for these three sharpening functions would most simulate OFF? I am using mVR with a low power GPU on a laptop and am soon going to add in a Darbee to the mix because I need to reduce all the taxing GPU/CPU load I have been putting on my laptops with a projector. But of course I still want to use mVR because of smooth motion and the various other awesome features, so when I add the Darbee I would like to start at a "normal", non mVR sharpening operations (for want of a better term) and increase sharpening slowy step by step up from that point and see how it goes... thanks guys very much

That makes no sense. If madVR changes the size of the video, it should do that in high quality. If you use a low quality upscaling (or even worse, downscaling), information is already lost. A post-processing box can't fully recover that. The best bet is always to use the highest quality as early as you can.

Thanks for your input nev, but I can't because it's killing my laptops with the huge load mVR taxes on my gpu/cpu. Let me start at as near to "ground zero" as I can then work my way up the mVR sharpening chains while using the darbee till I find a good equilibrium I can live with (not too much load cpu/gpu anymore but still good enough picture for me). But I don't know what is "off" like I mentioned.
Let's say I was using Haali as my renderer instead of mVR (which I don't want to do just say for comparison sake), which mVR sharpening settings would emulate Haali because I know that using Haali isn't cpu/gpu taxing... Thanks for any further tips...

I can run madVR on my 7" HP tablet, which uses an Atom CPU/GPU, at default settings, but that's about as far as I can go. Start with default settings and experiment from there to see what your system can handle.

I created some profiles and rules for madvr. Now I want to create an extra profile for low quality sources, which I can switch to with a keyboard shortcut.
Is there a way to show the active/chosen profile name in madvr's stats window? If not, will it be integrated in a future version?

the scalers are not "sharpening functions".
and a sharpening chain what are you even trying todo?

MPC-HC suddenly takes 20+seconds to open a file, status is "opening...", it's fine if I don't use MadVR as renderer.
This happened literally over night.
I already updated my GPU driver, reinstalled Madvr, installed an older version, reset all settings. Could it be my HDD? Got a gtx 1070 and an i7 6700k

I made an inquiry with AMD regarding their HDR switching method. Apparently you CAN use their API for on-the-fly HDR switching.

You cannot turn off chroma upscaling and still have a color image. It is very easy to turn off image down scaling or image upscaling, simply play back the video at its native resolution. Are you sure you understand what madVR is doing?
I, like others, are confused what you want to accomplish. Why would a Darbee help reduce madVR's GPU load?

What I believe he means by that is he's using Darbee to perform image processing that he would otherwise use madVR to do If he had the processing power.

If you are talking about scalers instead of sharpeners/post-processing, just pick out Bilinear to all.
With madVR Bilinear ain't really that bad, I use it all the time myself with powerful PC, because I prefer softness over ringing any time, so being lightweight is just an added bonus.
Check also that you have the default "trade performance" settings on, 32-bit buffers can sometimes slow down outdated hardware. As well as put dither to Ordered and tick the two boxes if you are watching the screen from very close (arm-lenght) or if the screen is huge compared to the distance. However if it is medium-sized and on the other side of the living room, no need for those unless have the power to spare.
I wouldn't recommend any post-processing device after madVR, though that might be because I never see the reason to use sharpeners (not adding anything to the picture, just doing halos and artifacts).

I am not sure why screen size or viewing distance would affect the choice either, if you are close you can notice the increased subjective noise from change dither for every frame and/or the increased chroma noise, I would want to turn them off in both situations.
I do agree that any post process device after madVR is probably counter productive.

It uses a custom tool to do that, however you basically enter the same information you could equally enter into the NVIDIA Control Panel, since thats what makes up a resolution.

I had a go but my TV doesn't like any alteration to the default horizontal total pixels at all (default is 2750 for 1920 active pixels). I can adjust the total vertical pixels very slightly but that doesn't allow me to get much closer to 23.976 Hz compared to the default values.

try is from a CVT reduced blank.
and read the guide so you will stop aiming at the 23.976 hz.

Just my personal experiences with couple 26" smallish monitors, 42" TV as a monitor (all arm-length away) and 55" across living room. The both ticks are "essential" on the 42" TV, since they do hide a lot of the noise and patterns (or what I think it is dither pattern, anyways it is gone after enabling that setting).
With the 55" TV I see no difference whatsoever due to the distance already eating away the noise (poor eyesight too). Same with the 26" monitors, just a tiny bit of difference if really concentrate on it.
However if they do not affect performance even a tiny bit, can enable both I suppose.
