I tried increasing the backbuffers for the old path FSE but the OSD is still showing the default 3 being used.
Am I missing something or is this a bug?

@toniash: It's win8.Can I ask why you are still using the old rendering path on Windows 8?

I thought all the problems with the new rendering path were fixed a long time ago.

I still have an issue where madVR switches to 60 Hz but goes to 59 Hz when switching to exclusive mode. It stays at 60 Hz when using the old path.

Backbuffer emptying out was a problem on my end. Everything is working well with v0.86.6.

Is there a way to determine the most appropriate flush settings for a GTX 670 2GB/i7 3570K/16GB RAM? Thanks!

Madshi,
Any chance to make the madVR settings GUI configurable BEFORE the playback is started? I mean something like LAVfilters have.
Thanks

when playing back an old NTSC video, 29.97fps (progressive) it says I get 1 frame repeat in 2 hours, but the frame repeat count goes up about 12 per second... queues are almost full, max stats are from 0.5ms to 5-8ms on rendering... same thing when I change upscaling algorithms.. (well stats go a bit up with rendering up to 18ms)

I wonder do you still remember about issue that results 720x480 video with 32:27 sar (and possibly other cases, I don't remember well myself) being displayed as, for example 0,0,1919,1080 (target rectangle)?

madshi already stated that it's in fact not the Video Renderer's fault, but the Video Player's. However, I'm too lazy to look for the exact post right now...

From what I remember it was just a guess about player but then madshi confirmed that issue is in madvr, however it wasn't big priority at that time. Besides it only happens in fullscreen and exclusive fullscreen, so is this really player's fault? Can you name at least 1 player without this issue?

Edit: I'm fine with this being "player's fault". If so I can ask another question. Who I need to contact to have this issue fixed? MPC-BE dev? LAV dev? someone else?

Glad to see so much updates lately. Im really thankful for such a great decoder, hope to see it default in the K-Lite Codec Package on one day.

Only "problem" i have is that in exlusive fullscreen mode any other video on a second monitor stops playing, while non-exlusive mode has visible laggs and frame-drops. jinc3 +ar @ gtx 670 :(

i have tv-app that runs on second monitor and it is plugged in another gtx 550, and i can see system is using that for rendering the tv-app, so the gtx670 is free for madvr ;)

I'd guess you need to report this to the video player developers, so it would be MPC-BE from your list.

Also, I found madshi's post (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1591775#post1591775) on the matter (and surprisingly, you even answered (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1591782#post1591782) yourself).

Media Player Classic - BE is based on the original "Media Player Classic" project (Gabest) and "Media Player Classic Home Cinema" project (Casimir666), contains additional features and bug fixes.

Try if the problem with the latest X86-version from here appears: http://nightly.mpc-hc.org/

The MPC-BE team also has nightly builds and theres a post here with references and even a link to "report problems"

however, i am STILL unable to get madVR to utilize the nvidia card.

this is what i've done thus far:
i went into nvidia control panel, --> then clicked: display GPU activity icon in notification area.

i went to manage 3D settings --> Program settings --> clicked Add --> clicked Browse --> then selected Madhcctrl --> & then chose "High performance nvidia processor" as the preferred graphics processor.

when i played back a video in MPC-HC, the "nvidia GPU Activity icon" near the bottom right did not LIGHT up to show that there was any activity. so madvr wasn't using the nvidia card.

i am still mind-boggled with this: what else can i do so that madvr uses the nvidia card?
Well, 1 week ago I've just written that renaming the mpc-hc.exe to game.exe was solved the problem, but I had to reinstall W8 and now I'm facing the same situation: no matter what I set only intel GPU is used by MadVR :(
Only way to MadVR utilize nvidia that I right click on the game.exe icon on desktop, and directly select that it should use nvida gpu. (Previously I had managed to set it somehow, but I don't have a clue how :) )

Yup, you should be able to add game.exe to the programs list in the nvidia control panel. Curiously, mpc-hc.exe seems to be hardwired to use the Intel GPU no matter what.

Does anyone know if there has been any update to XY-VSfilter rendering subtitles at the screen's native resolution which was supposed to work with a certain interface that MadVR uses IIRC.
I haven't heard of it in quite a while.

Also, is it possible to let MadVR upscale everything, then put it through XY-VSfilter, and then let MadVR output it to the monitor? I have plenty of RAM, VRAM and power to do this extremely inefficient way but if it works I'd happy. MPC-HC's renderer just sucks for fancy things.

I am able to get mpc-hc.exe to use nVidia GPU just like with any other program, no renaming necessary. This is demonstrable by looking at GPU-Z.

Pretty sure I have the latest drivers too.

I'm on 314.22 and I haven't upgraded yet because of the thing where some people said that their GPUs got artifacts or were damaged. I don't know if it is any different with 320.18.

In the NVIDIA Control Panel, for me under MPC-HC.exe the "preferred graphics processor" is set to "Integrated graphics" and it's greyed out so it can't be changed. If I right-click Media Player Classic Homecinema - > Run with graphics processor-> High-performance NVIDIA processor, GPU-z still shows that the Intel GPU is being used.

It's still in development. No public beta is available yet.
I remember reading somewhere, it might be ready around August, but it was just an estimation and I can't find the source right now.

In short: madVR is a renderer not a filter, so you can't. The new interface was designed for that, so just wait for the new XYSubFilter to be released.

Madshi,
Any chance to make the madVR settings GUI configurable BEFORE the playback is started? I mean something like LAVfilters have.
Thanks

Hi,
maybe there's something I'm missing here, but it seems that it's impossible to fast forward when bitstreaming audio to the avr. Is there anyway around that except for not bitstreaming audio to the avr?

edit: I just wanted to add that you're doing an awesome job and I've been converting people to properly set up their media players with madVR since I started using it!

It's still in development. No public beta is available yet.
I remember reading somewhere, it might be ready around August, but it was just an estimation and I can't find the source right now.
Back on April 10th, I made an estimate of 2-4 months of remaining development time before a beta, so I'd assume that was the source. That estimate is still on-track but it was always conservative. As of right now, it seems likely there will be a beta release in early July, right around the center of my initial estimate. There are still a couple issues we need to resolved before then though, the most notable one being flickering bitmap subtitles (PGS/DVB/VOSUB).

that's how bitstreaming works you can play something with x2 when you didn't decode it

@madshi

It seems I have been mistaken about this being a confirmed XySubFilter issue. When he said this was likely caused by a performance issue awhile back, he was referring to an issue caused by madVR specifically. Maybe you should re-open that bug #76 on your tracker and look into what's causing this after-all. If you have questions, please email him.

I am interested in this as well.
I wonder whether P010 videos will actually allow me to use Jinc3 filter without dropping frames. Though there isnt any GPU acceleration. But I've only been able to use Bicubic 75 and Lanczos-3. With Jinc3 and anti-ringing enabled, there is a framedrop. Probably because MadVR used Intel 3000 graphics for output.
If it uses Nvidia card (GT555M), will it have better performance with Jinc? Or is it more CPU dependent?

Yes, perfomance boost will be huge.
Yes, and on my GTX 660, GPU-Z shows only 10% usage when a video is playing with highest madVR settings, so there's room for even more demanding algorithms in the future.

Lucky for some. My laptop's nVidia card is a Quatro and the same in terms of performance as the Intel HD 4000, so I have no idea why it's even an option.

quadro's are speacil cards for spacial programs.

why did you get a laptop with an quadro gpu without knowing this?

Had no choice, got it through work for free. I was given the option of having a separate GPU and I obviously said "yes" - they did not explain that it was a useless card. :D

The Quadro's driver is optimized for triangle setup and OpenGL rendering pipeline performance. It needs to provide bug-free accuracy on 3D rendering. If you need to edit the object model formed by millions of triangles in such applications, it can be realized why Quadro is more suitable than the Geforce.

Instead the Geforce product line's driver is optimized for Direct3D gaming performance. Some performance tweaking tricks could result in quality-related issues. But it is not as serious as the case of running the software to design 3d model products.

I decided to try fullscreen windowed mode instead of fullscreen exclusive mode since I started using DisplayFusion Pro and in exclusive mode all focus gets taken by madVR. So, interesting observation. I have 59Hz, 50Hz, and 48Hz in display mode changer. These are all custom resolutions set within NVidia control panel. Now when going into fullscreen windowed mode the composition rate stays at 59Hz (and stays at that for exclusive as well) and the refresh rate is changed to 48Hz for this particular video. Now, I see noticeable frame drops/delays but the OSD doesn't show anything to that effect. All queues are filled up and frame drops/delays don't increase and frame repeats are around 1 day.

I thought this was due to having all flushes off in windowed and exclusive but even after setting the default flushes in windowed/exclusive/windowed & exclusive the issue persists.

So, is there something else going on with the monitor internally OR D3D displaying content at 59Hz (composition rate) in windowed mode instead of the new refresh rate of 48Hz? And if so is madVR not aware of this? Initially I thought this was a monitor issue but after running the refresh rate test in exclusive and windowed mode I see the same result. In exclusive it behaves the way I expect whereas in fullscreen windowed the patterns are noticeably choppy.

Anyone else have a workaround for using exclusive mode and DisplayFusion together? Or recommend some multi-monitor software other than ultramon?

Try disabling desktop composition... I noticed long ago with monior setups where both monitors have different refresh rates that windows composition would mess things up. For example my 20" LCD runs 1680x1050 @ 60Hz and is my main desktop (#1) and my 42" Plasma runs 1024x768 @ 71.928 Hz... I don't want to see any "composition" rates in the mix.

Thanks for the update!

I'm having a problem after updating from 86.1 to 86.3. I play my videos on an LCD and didn't have this problem ever with madVR, it only just appeared right after the update. Same settings as before. I think it has to do with the scaling algorithm (Image Upscaling: Lanczos 8 taps, Anti-Ringing, Linear Light). It goes away when I drop it to lower than 8 taps or disable the Anit-ringing filter. I'm not sure why though since these are the same settings I used before with no problems.

Weird! Can you please go back to v0.86.2 and v0.86.1 to check which version exactly introduced this issue? Also please double check that the problem *really* doesn't occur with v0.86.1, just to be safe that we're not chasing ghosts here...

It is really weird. I tried going back to V0.86.1 and the problem didn't go away. Still is in v0.86.6

Do you have any idea what could be causing this? It happened suddenly because I'm 100% sure it wasn't there a little while before updating to v0.86.3. I did update my Nvidia driver a while ago though.

(Image Upscaling: Lanczos 8 taps, Anti-Ringing, Linear Light).

Gotta ask, why are you using linear light with upscaling? I've found it does nasty things to lines.

is it normal to get 1000+ repeated frames in the first 2 minutes of a video with madvr deinterlace on? just curious, i'm showing between 24-34% gpu load

edit: the repeated frames count is increasing at a rate of about 20fps

I also saw this if "use half frame rate for DXVA deinterlacing" option is checked on 1080i60 contents to 60 Hz output. It happens to both nVidia ION and Intel i5-2467M SandyBridge (HD3000) on my hand. The interesting thing is that such behavior does not happen on 1080i50 contents to 60Hz output.

hmm, i'm not using half frame rate, so its deinterlacing 29.97 to 59.94fps

Actually I get this result on 1 particular 1440x1080i60 ISDB-T MPEG-2 TS content to 1920x1080p60 ouput on HD7970 (+ Catalyst 13.6 beta2 driver). It even caused DXVA decoding corruption with LavFilter 0.56.1 or older version on this AMD GPU.

Since it does not happen to rest of the similar (more than 20) TS samples on my hand, it should have very few chances which such result's root cause comes from madVR in my case.

So, it solved, but again, I don't know how and why :)

The main problem was for me, that in nvidia control panel I set using iGPU in the Global Settings (and set some things as well here).
The solution was:
- mpc-hc.exe renamed to game.exe
- Restore defaults in nvidia control panel
- set using iGPU in the Global Settings
- set using nvidia for game.exe (which was recognised as Warfare(??))
- tried it out, but it didn't work.
- renaming game.exe to game2.exe : -> it's working!!!

So it's clearly a bug in the nvidia control panel.

One last note: you should set CUDA in lav video to be able use nvidia with madvr. If dxva is set then iGPU is used. (As far as I can remember.)

How can I switch it off? (Win8)

Refresh rate changer bug: only affects 'new exclusive fullscreen mode' (not the others: fullscreen windowed, overlay windowed, exclusive old path)
- my TV (see my signature) is supporting the following refresh rates: 23.97, 24, 25, 29.97, 30, 59.94, 60
- in madvr the supported display modes are: 1080p24, 1080p25, 1080p60

If I play a 23.97 fps content in 'new exclusive fullscreen mode' then the refresh rate of the screen is ~23.750 (so it not using 24Hz) and that why I get massive stutter. (Works correctly with all other fullscreen modes.)

OS: Win8, newest intel driver, nvidia v320.xx, lav, madvr, stable mpc-hc

Btw: is there any difference between the different fullscreen modes picture quality wise?
(I'm using fullscreen exclusive old path right now.) Thanks!

You cannot disable desktop composition on Windows 8.

It may come down to the quality of your source material, I've found it makes ringing and artifacts much more apparent. Looking at Lanzcos 8 taps with linear light upscaling with some of my content (640x480 anime in this case) makes my eyes bleed.

It's much less severe with 3 taps but I find it doesn't look natural at all even at this level, it ruins the smoothness of lines, it's like someone has gone overboard with a darkening filter in places.
I care about my line quality a lot and I could never use this, it may suit other content more? Guess it's just personal preference, I just don't recommend it.

You cannot disable desktop composition on Windows 8.To expand on this: you can't because it's already off - win8 doesn't use desktop composition since they get rid off transparency/blur, and from what I hear, in win8.1 they cleaned out even more stuff.

hi

sure, i know my laptop with hd2000 sucks, but i want to test, (i have a powerful desktop too)

the problem
i setup everything, lav filter, madvr, mpchc,

mad vr works fine on windowed, but when it enters fullscreen, it changes my res, maybe some bug with refresh rate and mess my screen

playing on lcd tv, 32inches, 1360x768 60hz, madvr changes my screen to some sort of 1080p interlaced crap, and yes i am using tv, not my laptop lcd

This is not true. Transparency/blur also called Aero is a name of the theme. Desktop composition is an engine behind desktop. They're not going to do anything with it except make more advanced. Desktop composition in win8 is perfectly capable of making the same blur.
