Yeah, I was thinking of a JVC DLA-X3, which is D-ILA, you are right.
I was also very impressed for the money with a Sony HW-15. Longevity isn't a huge issue, it took me 6 years to do 600 hours on my CRT projector (then I installed another one, due to wear).
I disagree, 3D is coming along nicely, but slowly. Avatar and Tron Legacy are two of my very favourite movies, I want to watch them in 3D.

I disagree, 3D is coming along nicely, but slowly. Avatar and Tron Legacy are two of my very favourite movies, I want to watch them in 3D.The depth you get to the image when it's done right, is absolutely great in 3D. I just don't think the home technology is there yet. Once they eliminate crosstalk completely, and we get passive displays that can maintain 1080p resolution while keeping the same brightness in 3D as 2D (and I do not even keep my displays very bright) I think it will be a lot more compelling.
I'm not anti-3D, I just don't think it's worth buying a new display specifically for 3D while the display technology and content production process still needs to mature.

no matter what I seem to do, madvr always keeps telling me my display Hz is 59,88 all the time :(

When 'enable automatic fullscreen exclusive mode' is disabled and 'use a separate device for presentation' is enabled, switching to fullscreen causes a lot of weird issues (no video image, exiting fullscreen causes the screen to black out for a few seconds, etc...).
Even with 'use a separate device for presentation' disabled, there's issues of video pauses where you have to click pause/play to get the video going again.

If I`ve understood you correctly, the standard MPC-HC/ffdshow combo isn`t able to display only forced subs. What a pitty! For me this feature is very important as permanently shown subtitles are quite annoying...
Can anybody else reproduce this? Might be a media player bug, not sure. I don't think madVR actually does anything to the mouse, I think the media player does that, but I'm not 100% sure right now.
You can't *drag* the seekbar, it's not designed for that. But you should be able to click on it to seek. Works for me, at least.
I have not investigated this any further recently and it's not on my near time schedule. Some time later maybe.
Concerning the mouse visibility and the seekbar problems, I have done some tests (all with madvr 0.61 and MPC-HC 1.5.2.3056):

EVR-CP seems to be okay.
If you need further tests, no problem.
Concerning the non working DVD menu:
Hopefully you are able to get the DVD menu working at the end (whenever it will be). For me personally this is a must have feature as I watch a lot of original DVDs! Without this the usability of madVR for me is very limited.
So I am desperately in search of a working solution or a workaround at least!

You do want to watch your movie at 24fps. Not every users are bothered by watching a film at 23.976 instead of 24.
Any frame drops during film playback are obvious and unacceptable.
Wrong again (for me). One dropped frame every 30 minutes is not a problem except if you're a cyborg.
Maybe you don't like the way he gave his advices, but don't bash someone who share his solutions... :devil:
ps: you will find another type of cyborg which will tell you Reclock resample audio, thus destruct it. It's impossible to content everybody, but dricks2222's way is an acceptable way.

madshi, I notice a little bug you might like to know about. It may be an nvidia problem, I can't be sure.
Using madVR 0.61 (with the fix for the process priorities), when I use fullscreen exclusive mode with "present several frames in advance" ON, there is a fairly significant difference in audio / video desync compared to when the option is OFF
I have all sub options under "present several frames in advance" disabled.
With the option ON: Video / Audio sync seems about 0.2~ of a second off windowed mode
With the option OFF: Video / Audio sync is exactly the same as windowed mode, and the same as other renderers like evr-cp.
As I'm in the middle of trying to tweak audio / video sync I can't be sure which is actually correct.. maybe you and others could test please? Because evr-cp gives the same results as when this option is OFF, I presume this is the value thats behaving correctly.
This is Windows 7 64bit, gtx295. I'm using the 25fps avi file from the following page at 50hz on my HDTV.

To obtain a PERFECT fluidity with a LCD monitor and madvr (i have a 226bw), all you have to do is to add a custom resolution with a refresh rate of 47.952 (23.976*2) OR 71.928 (23.976*3)

Yeah, i still have 1 frame drop every 30 minutes or so at 47.952 and every 45minutes at 71.928 but i think i can live with that ;)
You can get rid of that using Reclock.
However, you seem to think that most LCD monitors support these custom refresh rates ; most don't. I, too, am lucky to have a Hyundai W240D which accepts 48.034Hz (but not below, and not 72Hz either) ; but all my friend's LCD monitors will just stare at you with a black screen if you try to send them anything else than standard 60Hz.
Also, be careful when setting refresh rates higher than 60 Hz ; AFAIK, some LCDs will let you do that, but they will in fact stay at 60 Hz, dropping frames internally (which, as you can imagine, is very, very bad).
I have a question for ppl using cards equally weak or weaker than Radeon 5450. I have a Radeon 6450 with a reasonably fast dual core CPU. I have no problems playing most of my video files under Windows7 64 Bit except all 1080p Files (mostly 4 Reference Frames and 23,976 fps). So how did you manage to play without dropped frames, could you tell me the settings which worked for you?

Technically, Reclock doesn't use 192 kHz (in fact, it doesn't use any specific sample rate at all), but I agree the quality degradation is probably well below what an human can ear. However, I'm not sure upsampling films audio to 24 fps is The Right Thing To Do. What is the film was slowed down from 24 to 23.97 during mastering using not only downsampling, but also timestretching? How could you tell? In this case, upsampling it to bring it back to 24 fps would alter the audio pitch (very slightly, but still).
There are also some soundcards that can change their audio clock in the hardware if you want completely lossless.
No there aren't. DACs don't work like that. If a soundcard is pretending to accept, say, 48048Hz, it's either lying to you, or it's resampling internally.

Film is at 24 fps, and is slowed down to 24/1.001 fps before telecining for playback on an NTSC display.

Funny thing is, digital audio file frequencies beyond 48kHz is pointlessly beyond the frequency range of human ears.
Human ear frequency max = 20kHz (average that people can actually hear is about 16-17kHz)
Digital audio file frequencies with transmission imperfections from decoding to speakers = ~44.1kHz
The only reason why someone might need 192kHz is for editing in the studio where many conversions and clippings will be done on the original stream.

So how did you manage to play without dropped frames, could you tell me the settings which worked for you?
Best thing you can do is experiment, run GPU-Z or something similar and check GPU load while playing back high res and reference frame content.
I think it would be a good idea for you to look at overclocking your GPU and squeezing as much as you can out of it.

The 6450 is supposedly faster than previous generation you should be fine.

Madshi, have you considered developing a few madVR profiles? Low quality (for slower computers) for example would avoid more of these questions as madVR becomes more popular.

He hasn't added it yet, he has a list of priorities that he's working through and while it's on the list it's not at the top of it.
I still get an access violation error when I switch to the next mediafile in the folder. I use PgUp and PgDown to do this often from within the media player - and whenever I do, I get an error.
MPC-HC says: Access violation at adress 4A50F54E in module MVRSETTINGS.DLL Read of adress 06FFFFFC. This has ben happening since v0.59 and changing settings dosn't seem to do anything.
It only happens in exclusive mode btw. Works fine in windowed.
Any1 else getting this error or can help?

Update: OK seems like it wasn't because of the settings in Madvr. My GPU and Processor are powerful enough to decode the files. All Problems gone since I updated LAV Splitter and installed an older Version of ffdshow.

The maximum frequency a PCM recording can hold is half its sampling rate, which would be 22.05 kHz for a file sampled at 44.1 kHz, well above what any human can hear.
The only true use for higher sampling rates is for better pitch or time shifting, the process of which involves resampling, which would be why Reclock wants to oversample.

No, sample rate is directly related to the maximum frequency. Read up:

The maximum frequency a PCM recording can hold is half its sampling rate, which would be 22.05 kHz for a file sampled at 44.1 kHz, well above what any human can hear.That's true, but it has no relevance to oversampling audio. (well, you would want to oversample to avoid aliasing when processing)

In that example posted above, if you were to sample the analogue signal at 20Hz (assuming the image above is 10Hz) you would simply have twice the number of data points per second, and a better representation of the original signal.

It doesn't change the frequency of the audio, it simply gives you more data points on it.
When you are just playing back audio, you're fine playing back 48kHz audio at 48kHz, but if you are making any changes to it, you need to oversample it to have enough precision to do so without a quality loss.

That's not entirely true. Many movies are shot with digital cameras and 23.976 fps can be used. Moreover, some movies have parts shot at 24fps and other parts shot at 23.976 (e.g. Black Swan). This is especially true for scenes shot with DSLR.
The truth is, that it doesn't matter. No-one is able to see the difference between 24 and 23.976 fps (see no hear). You don't even have to mess with sound if you edit common scene in a movie, because single shot is usually very short (couple of seconds), so video and audio are still in sync.
Reclock upsamples to 32/192 before working on the audio.

This is essentially the same reason madVR works in 16-bit despite our video sources being 8-bit.
Upsampling to 32/192 BEFORE resampling doesn't make sense. Following your madVR example: it's like changing video frame from 1920x1080 8-bit to 3840x2160 16-bit only to scale it down to 1280x720 8 bit. This would be huge waste of CPU/GPU power and it would introduce artifacts (same way chroma upscaling introduces false data).
Also upsampling by averaging samples (like in your example) introduces false frequencies beyond initial 24kHz).
Reclock indeed uses 32/192, but AFAIK only for output from resampling routines, to better allocate data from resampling process. And that is perfectly resonable.

I still get an access violation error when I switch to the next mediafile in the folder. I use PgUp and PgDown to do this often from within the media player - and whenever I do, I get an error.

I'm trying to use MadVR with RGB to talk to my Panasonic TH-P50VT20A plasma over HDMI from HTPC Windows 7, Quad Core, 1G, ATI 5570.
Whenever I set the Pixel Format to in CCC (11.4, 11.3, 11.2 & 10.8) to ATI "RGB 4:4:4" it does the update and all my levels are fine - brilliant picture.
BUT sometime between 10 seconds and 60 seconds later it "auto magically" goes to YCbCr 4:4:4 in CCC, I can see it resync on the plasma, revert to YCbCr 4:4:4 in CCC and screw my levels. :mad:
Reboots and coming out of standby also seem to trigger it. :mad:
Levels are correct if I use a DVI to HDMI cable, but for other reasons I can't use this.
One thing that does seem to trigger the "reverting" is closing MPC-HT with MadVR. Perhaps something is "resetting" regularly?
I've reverted to 10.8 drivers, but they seem to have the same behavour.
I've googled my head off and can't find much except old stuff about the YCbCr 4:4:4 being shown after RGB 4:4:4 update, but this is different.
Is anyone else seeing this? Any ideas? :thanks:
Update: More googling finally turned up the answer.
Turn off GPU Scalling, stop AMD external event service, change Pixel Format to RGB 4:4:4, reboot and enable service

It depends on the frame rate of your content but lets assume your content is 24fps, the point to running at 24hz on 24fps material is to avoid frame drops or duplicated frames. Advantages of this are a smoother movie watching experience the disadvantage is that some screens have a high amount of flicker at low refresh rates.

At display modes box, type: 1920x800p23 (if your monitor support this refresh rate) or 1920x800p24 (use this with reclock to resync the audio)
I think you should use reclock because there is filckers at low refresh rate. I run 24p at 48hz so the problem is not as serious as 24hz.

thank you,I see.it means that display modes don't matter with video stream resolution ratio,just important to displayer device or TV physical resolution ratio and refresh rate.

madshi, I notice a little bug you might like to know about. It may be an nvidia problem, I can't be sure.
Using madVR 0.61 (with the fix for the process priorities), when I use fullscreen exclusive mode with "present several frames in advance" ON, there is a fairly significant difference in audio / video desync compared to when the option is OFF
I have all sub options under "present several frames in advance" disabled.
With the option ON: Video / Audio sync seems about 0.2~ of a second off windowed mode
With the option OFF: Video / Audio sync is exactly the same as windowed mode, and the same as other renderers like evr-cp.
A few questions:
(1) Does the amount of sync mismatch depend on the number of pre-presented frames (which you can set to anything between 1-16)?
(2) What happens if you activate/deactivate the "use a separate device for presentation" option (render settings)? Does that fix the problem?
(3) What about the D3D11 presentation path? Does that fix the problem?
Generally audio should have exactly the same sync with "present several frames in advance" turned on and off. If there's a difference then something is going wrong.
Can you other guys please also test and report audio/video sync? Thanks...

Did a bunch of tests anyway, just to be sure.
There´s absolutely nothing wrong with the renderer, madVR behaves perfectly fine and is not the source of the problem. What mark007 found however (and this is a good thing, if it gets fixed), is definately a bug in ffmpeg-mt.
You can reproduce this pretty easily. Play the .avi with the ffmpeg-mt decoder and you´re going to have a rather unpleasant desync. Now, if you change the decoder to ffmpeg (or rather libavcodec) without altering anything else, there´s no problem whatsoever.

Hi madshi iSunrise. Although ffmpeg-mt caused a desync problem I thought I could still see one in madVR due to the differences between desync with on/off of "prevent several frames in advance" but I am glad to report I cant reproduce any issues today after many settings changes in madvr when not using ffmpeg-mt so looks like there's no issues in madVR at all.
Strange how ffmpeg-mt had different effects on desync when switching "prevent several frames in advance" on/off but I'll follow up with discussons on this issue over on the ffdshow thread. thanks.

Using madVR 0.61 with "all latest": MPC-HC 1.5.1.2903, CoreAVC 2.0.0 and LAV Splitter 0.25 on Windows 7 32-bit using an ATI Radeon 4350 (Catalyst 11.4), I'm unable to get madVR to display subtitles from MPC-HC. Tested using plain old SRT subtitles and embedded MKV subtitles.
If I switch to EVR, subtitles are shown ; if using madVR, they aren't (windowed and exclusive mode).
It seems the subtitles aren't passed from MPC-HC to madVR.
Any ideas on what's going on? Do I need to configure anything for this to work?

Try a newer version of MPC-HC, i dont remember when the support for madVR subs was added, but it was fairly recent.

Present several frames in advance
Run Presentation in a separate thread
Limit rendering times to avoid glitches
But I am also using Reclock...

I think further madvr version had better select most matchable display modes automatically just like reclock while playback,no need to type a series of digital manually in display modes box instead.Because many fans don't know how to type these digital in display modes box,I wonder if author(madshi) of madvr is thinking it over

What do you set in the madVR refresh rate changer on the target monitor/TV ? I just typed "1080p23, 1080p50, 1080p59, 1080p60, 1080p24". It just works fine with Forceware 270.61 + GTX260+ on the same OS platform like yours.
Recently I have verified that LAVFilter(+ audio decoders) + LAVCUVID + madVR combination finally works on very high bit-rate MPEG-2 TS contents with excellent HW deinterlace quality + frame-rate doubler. There is no need to talk about more popular H.264 ones.
I don't use Reclock since the DTS-connect sound card is used. AC3/DTS audio source contents are always passed-through to AVR.

OK I have 1080p23 in the display mode list
but Madvr reports that my refresh rate is still 60.06
any help?
OK it works for 1920x1080p videos
but when the refresh rate changes, the entire screen goes blank and then it comes back with huge black borders on all sides and blurry text/image, like the resolution changed to 1280x720 or something
is there a way to get the refresh rate to change while keeping my normal screen
btw MADVR reports it is at 1920x1080 at 24hz
but my monitor is 1920x1200
