he doesn't have enough time to fix/add what he want in 166 before it timed out and is now ask if he can delay it for more days.

and it is nearly for sure the same code.
how he disables the new features this is not for me to judge.

an envy build only needs to work on an envy and what they are set up to. meaning the imbedded windows which will be 100 % the same between all models.

he has clearly no time.

well been a couple years now since madshi answered anything here. Doom9 users is not the target audience of his current product. And it is time consuming to keep track and reply here.

I mean clearly at this point it's abandonedware. It's sad that there is no active alternative/ and that it's not open source. heh Nah, it's still in development.

 it really depends how you look at it. I would argue madVR as a HTPC software is not in development and currently only a test platform to work on the tone mapping, which in itself is progressing quite slowly. But for sure is still better than competition in some aspects.

I would argue it has better up-scaling than even madVR and it has dynamic HDR tone-mapping, though not as good as madVR in that regard, at least not now. To complement that, libplacebo is modern and maintained. I will not list it advantages again, but suffice to say, madVR except DTM loses in every aspect. (oh, maybe automatic cropping is missing currently, but it is also little bit broken in madVR test builds...)

Why not come out with a new version after so many years? There are two main points. madVR didn't get any new features and (little) fixes over the years on this "test" releases. And the area that is being work on (DTM) is still in progress. Its settings page is impossible to understand unless you read 15k posts on avs forum. madshi said his goal is to decide on parameters/algorithms and significantly reduce tunability to make it accessible for normal person.

Second and probably more important point is that envy exists. That's why test releases have time limit hardcoded in them, which cannot be included in release version realistically. madshi mentioned subscription based madVR and until then there will not be new release, if ever. One of the concerns to update madVR is that would allow envy clones. (well and other issues, outside of scope of this discussion)

And even with subscription based madVR I wouldn't expect feature parity with envy. I know target of envy and HTPC is little bit different, but still the relation between madVR and Envy is tricky. (even though they probably share the same code base)

he has clearly no time. Exactly. Priorities. I believe even madshi said he still considers madVR as a project he would like to keep working on, but we cannot expect it from him.

I guess what I try to say, take what we have and don't expect much more for now.

EDIT: but instead of my ramblings, let's quote madshi form here (https://www.avsforum.com/threads/improving-madvr-hdr-to-sdr-mapping-for-projector-no-support-questions.2954506/post-62306191) I'm buried in work. Simply no time available for that atm. That said, we're trying to hire an additional dev to help me out, which increases the chances for this happening at some point.

However, at the same time, I'm also seeing people publicly trying to hack the time limit in madVR. Which makes me wonder if I can really trust that people will honor the license agreement? Which was the whole foundation for why I thought a user registration with a forced license agreement accept button might be the solution.

Now I'm starting to wonder: If people are not shy of publicly discussing hacking madVR, they will probably not honor any license agreement, either. At the same time, our Envy dealers would highly prefer if I dropped the madVR HTPC software because they consider it competition to the Envy.

If people ignore the license agreement, maybe even start trying to hack around to make capture cards work, and consequently try to replace the Envy with a cheap self-made HTPC doing something similar to the Envy, then that puts my whole dedication to keeping the madVR HTPC software alive in jeopardy. I've no interest in shooting myself (or my business) in the foot. Why would I invest precious development time into something that hurts my own business? So I really wish people would be more sensitive and would limit themselves to using madVR only the way it's intended to be used, and not trying to make it into something that would compete with the Envy. Otherwise at some point they might force me into dropping madVR HTPC development.

EDIT2: Also just to make it clear, I'm not complaining or anything. madVR is great software that we got for free. But we need to understand madshi has a product now that is in fact competing with madVR, so it is hard to make it work together. You can read all "expert" opinions on AVS.

Well, for me a profiling system like in MadVR would be essential to even consider to switch. Does libplacebo has anything like that ?

Also is there a DirectShow-version ? I really do not like VLC and MPV that much, sorry.

libplacebo is just a lib other renderer can use (including madVR).
it just depends what other make out of it.
if they add a profile system then yes but that's not the job of libplaebo which is just source code.

For my main viewing these days I have moved away from madvr. Libplacebo based renderers have indeed come a long way and even apply tonemapping based on Dolby Vision metadata in some cases. Is this as good as madvr tonemapping? Arguably no. But I'm not spending enormous amounts of time configuring 1000 options and worrying about a timeout, either. Everything we do on an HTPC is a tradeoff. that isn't to say I don't still have madvr installed, up to date, and configured. I can change to it in a matter of seconds when I choose to. But at the end of the day you have to ask yourself what hoops you're willing to jump through to squeeze out every last ounce of PQ from your setup. Those who are determined, will make madvr beta builds work for them. Those that want "better than the TV's internal tonemapping but far easier to setup than madvr currently" will potentially choose another rendering solution.

The simple fact is this...based on what madshi said in the latest comments on the AVS thread, it's increasingly possible that madvr on the HTPC may die off completely and receive no further support at some point. He made it VERY clear that if he has to choose his business over madvr then the HTPC will lose. He doesn't want that to be the case, but at the end of the day he chose to start a business and that is his focus. While we've benefitted from the bargain of using test builds to help improve Envy, some day that bargain may end up not being worth it to madshi. That's a cold hard reality.

AFAIK DV dynamic metadata is NOT used by Libplacebo. Just like MadVR, they offer their own dynamic metadata based on scene detection. The DV advantage they have over MadVR is the proper handling of Profile 5 DV rips (rips from streaming sources). Those don't have the HDR fallback and without proper handling of the DV color space, all colors are messed up. (but again, not consuming the DV dynamic metadata).

I have MPV and MadVR side by side, but I'm still using MadVR most of the time, due to its better HDR -> SDR BT.2020 tonemapping (I have a JVC projector). Hendrik (Nev from Lav) is also working on a JRiver based solution and he wants to fully support DV - at least that's what he posted on his goals for the next release. While I never considered JRiver as an option, I would have to reconsider it if/when this gets released. I believe he is also using Libplacebo.

That's correct. It is core code, madVR is little bit more on top.

It would be actually quite easy to wrap libplacebo in DirectShow, but hell we have 2023, writing DS software is not something you should even consider doing. Or even Windows only software for that matter. As for alternatives maybe JRiver is the way?

So we should give up on MPC? I really like the MPC platform and MPC-BE can still do things that no other media player I have found can do. Especially not another free one.

I would love if I could use libplacebo in MPC.

I didn't say libplacebo was doing that, I said some renderers based on libplacebo were doing that. :) JRVR, in fact, which is what I'm using. E.G. JRiver's renderer. It's been released for quite some time and has gotten quite better over time. What it (currently) does is take the DV metadata and applies it to the HDR output and it looks really good. Does it compare to madvr? No. Is it meant to? No. Hendrick stated from the beginning it's not his current goal to compete with madvr. What he wants is to have an easy to use "good enough" renderer. And they certainly have that! Where it goes from here I don't know. I haven't looked at their future plans but every version that comes out gets better and better. And works on my MacBook Pro in addition to my Windows HTPC.

I fired up Jriver and used FSRCNNX16 and it provided very similar results to NGU AA, a bit unresponsive with pausing and playing though compared to madVR.

Nice to know it's a decent alternative option if I want/need but it hasn't attracted me much even when I looked at it some years ago.

I've been using jriver for many years. Up until a few months ago I used it exclusively with madvr, dropping the beta build into its private madvr copy. But jrvr has really come along a lot and is getting better and better. And it just works without fussing with a ton of configuration.

H-hey there guys. Can anyone help me ?
I'm trying MadVR but.. i can't play 4/60 videos with it..
It give me huge framedrops..
Not only that but.. the 4/60 videos play like 30 fps videos if i don't enable
smooth motion
What's going on ?
Perhaps my PC can't handle it ?
Ryzen 7 3800X
2x8 DDR4 3200 Mhz (So 16 GB of RAM)
RTX 3070
Windows 11 Pro
I have a RU7100 65 connected on my PC using HDMI.
That huge framedrops are with default settings..
What you guys think ?
If i disable MadVR, i can run any video even 8/60
Is MadVR so big hit in performance ?

For 4k60 I was never able to get smooth playback with CPU decoding. If you are using LAV Video Decoder then it will say "active hardware accelerator" in its GUI if GPU is decoding. I am using "DXVA2 copyback" for GPU decoding and 4k60 works perfect on GTX1070 & 4790k at loads not above 20% CPU & 55% GPU at max clocks. With CPU decoding, CPU load is in the 80% range and stutters/freezes constantly. But, I am using Lanczos for scaling so my MadVR GPU load is very low.

What are you currently using and which renderers are using libplacebo? I was experimenting a bit with SMPlayer + MPV but not satisfied. JRVR seems only to work with JRiver Media Center. and I am not going to pay 60$ for a renderer and they charge extra $$$ for each major release.

Has anyone tried an Intel Arc A750 or Arc A770 Limited Edition cards? Asking specifically about those cause the ARC GPUs don't natively have HDMI 2.1 FRL, but these LE cards are supposed to include a built-in DP 2.0 to HDMI FRL chip that enables 4k 120Hz @ 10 bit RGB.

What I'm wondering is:

- If it works with auto HDR switching on Windows 11.
- If it doesn't have any trouble bitstreaming Dolby TrueHD Atmos and DTS:X over DTS-HD.

I've been planning to get rid of my RTX 3070 since the Atmos dropouts won't ever get fixed, but the RTX 4000 series are a no go for me until prices are reasonable, same with AMD.

So, three prints.

First is Zack Snyder's Justice League Remux movie.
As you can see, if i set the Smooth Motion on
There will be a lot of dropped frames
i just let the scene play for.. 20 seconds i guess.

Secondly is Gemini Man 10 bit sdr 4k movie (almost remux)
Anyway.. this movie is 60 fps.
As you can see, if i set the Smooth Motion off
I will still get dropped frames, a lot..
The movie is cleary not playing at 60 fps.
If i want a video to play at 60 fps using MadVR..
I HAVE to set Smooth Motion on for some reason. It will never be 60 fps without it.
BUT, it's impossible.. the video cleary is not at 60 fps most of time.
Only on extreme rare ocassions..
Ah, i even tried a random 4/60 fps video on youtube (i downloaded the video)
Even a simple video of youtube, will not play 60 fps if i don't set
Smooth Motion on
Video example i tried..
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07FdDRbdurg
TEKKEN 8 – Reveal Trailer

third is Gamini Man 10 bit sdr 4k movie (almost remux) again.
As you can see, this time, i set the Smooth Motion on
There will be a lot less dropped frames i don't know why..
But.. it's still pretty bad. Just like i said above..

What is going on guys, should i just give up on MadVR ?
It's seems so heavy performance hit.
Ah, this is using the default settings, guys. Yeah.. :/

I should say, that both movies play perfectly fine if i disable MadVR in MPC-BE x64

Hrm, same thing. I just hate black bars so i always try to stretch the screen. But i tried without doing that, same result :/

Hrm˛.. so, i do use LAV but only LAV Splitter.. because i like to increase the buffer of the files.
Should i try LAV Video too ?

About the other apps. I always, close all apps when i'm doing something.
So, if i'm watching a movie, or playing games.. etc.. i will close everything i can.

But, i tried to close them all before and no change.

Yes, please try a full-LAV-chain first/next !! You could also test different decoders in LAV then.

Another thing to test would be to increase the CPU-queue in MadVR to 28 (or more) and leave GPU at 8. And try also there the "delay playback start
until render queue is full" setting ! Maybe this would help to better fill the render queue ?

I don't think this issue is on your end. I've been getting frequent MPC-HC crashes since the 1st of this month all pointing at madVR.
First one: https://drdump.com/UploadedReport.aspx?DumpID=103636514
Most recent one, after downgrading MPC-HC to a version that has never crashed on me before: https://drdump.com/UploadedReport.aspx?DumpID=103737206
Actually after looking a bit closer at the info available on this site we can see over 200 of these same crashes all since the 1st of the month: https://drdump.com/DumpGroup.aspx?DumpGroupID=2321355

I came here expecting a lot of complaints about the "Please update your madVR build." OSD message and constant crashes (which I think started on the same day?) but was surprised to only find a single mention of each.

Looks ok...4ms for MadVR processing is small, and the high present 15ms is I'm guessing due to the screenshot functionality interfering with it (that happens on mine too - when I open the screenshot dialog with ctrl+I the present ms skyrockets to 15ms but when movie is playing it's very close to 0ms).

I should say, that both movies play perfectly fine if i disable MadVR in MPC-BE x64

Well then it must be a MadVR issue. I'm not sure what it could be though. Maybe try toggling different MadVR "rendering" settings one at a time and see what happens. Process of elimination.

Because when i play a video, it says something like.. DXVA2 Native

Try DXVA2 copyback in the decoder settings and see if MadVR plays nicer with it.

edit: native works fine on my rig, tested with this 4k60 HDR video (https://4kmedia.org/lg-colors-of-journey-demo/), default queues CPU 16 GPU 8.

edit: forgot to mention, someone else had a performance issue and it turned out to be that deinterlacing was activated, so check it's disabled in both MadVR and LAV Video Decoder.

Even a simple video of youtube, will not play 60 fps if i don't set

Smooth motion is just frame blending, it won't give you real 60fps. Something else must be going on.

The whole situation is nevertheless really sad because madVR was so unique because there was Madshi who was willing to spend hours in coding

and

a dedicated user base which was willing to spend hours in testing and giving feedback. Once he went "hardware" this great symbiosis decreased slowly but surely.
IIRC he even left this forum without saying goodbye or something.

I am sure that the libplacebo-project gains momentum as soon as they also offer directshow-versions.

I mean honestly I could see myself using Beta 113 still 10 years from now.

No reason to switch away from Windows 10 on my HTPC, just keep it firewalled off the Internet after 2025 or so.

And no reason to update GPU drivers, just use it with a 30 series GPU which will still play 4K HDR movies great in 10 years.

I doubt we even see a worthwhile change to video formats in 10 years. 4K HDR is good enough to provide basically a theater quality presentation of a film.
