Questions:
If you buy a Asus GeForce GTX 1080 Turbo 2xHDMI 2xDP 8GB and are going to use it to upscale 540p and 720p to 2160p, what is the weakest/cheapest motherboard, PSU, processor and least amount of RAM you can get away with (using MPC-HC, LAV Filters, nVidia Cuvid and madVR)?
Or is the Asus GeForce GTX 1070 Ti Cerberus Advanced 2xHDMI 2xDP 8GB better?
What's the difference between a "Ti" and one without the "Ti"?

Hi all,
I am using an ASUS PA32U monitor in conjunction with madVR 0.92.17/Lavfilters/MPC-HC and 2 x Nvidia FX1080 cards for display.
It seems that Nvidia drivers 416.81 are the last working (tried 416.94, 417.01 and new 417.22) drivers which actually trigger the HDR mode automatically in the monitor. Is anyone else having the same experience, or can advise on any tips to make playback work? I have as usual made a clean install of the drivers in each case.

Don't want to go OT in this madVR thread too much but you are correct. All 3 of the latest drivers have HDR mode switching problems of one sort or another. Some players do switch and others don't. I use a lot of different players. The last driver that switches all of them is 416.81. Still, that driver (and all the drivers since 388.59) have a specific audio bug related with Windows 10 auto switching. I've been editing the installer to use the HD Audio driver from 388.59 as a workaround. I doubt your specific monitor has anything to do with the equation. Why are you using 2 video cards? I tried in the past and madVR did not support SLI afaik.

Feature request:
- Move active image to the top of the screen.
Why? To minimize overlap between subtitles (that are moved down into the black bar) and the image.
- Allow subtitles to span wider than the active image, when there are black bars on left/right (instead of top/bottom). Right now, when watching 4:3 content, some very long subtitle lines are split into two, sometimes making 2-line subtitles into 4-line ones.

I've been editing the installer to use the HD Audio driver from 388.59 as a workaround.Couldn't you install 388.59 fully and then custom install the newer drivers, deselecting the audio driver?
Or is that what you mean by "editing the installer"?

No. If you deselect part of a driver from an installation package (audio in this case), the old driver is removed during the install process and then you are left with nothing. Editing the driver install package to swap drivers around is too OT for this forum but I have explained in detail how to do it in the link in my sig. It may not even apply to you but it does me for a couple major issues. Mainly AAC audio common in HEVC x265 rips and internet video behavior (such as youtube) depending on state of AVR on/off.

Thanks all for the information, I will keep my eye on the thread in case a further driver release does "everything" then :-).
Reason for the two graphics cards is that I occasionally use the machine for gaming (and in the past also made use for Boinc distributed computer).

It's not that it's not compatible, it's just not supported..
There's zero compatibility issues with 8.1, you're better off with this OS anyway but you can try 7 with Coffee Lake, will probably work just fine.

It may not be a "compatibility" issue as such, but Microsoft has stopped offering you Windows Updates if you use an unsupported CPU. So if you run such a CPU, its really unwise to stick to that OS. An unpatched OS is a bad idea.

Hi guys,
I own a 4K projector and a Panoramic screen (2.35:1 format).
I use my HTPC (nvidia gtx 970, Win 10) with Kodi +DSplayer with MadVR.
I need to inscribe the image in my screen.
Using resize function into Nvidia control panel I've resized the OS desktop to 3840x1662 px and now it's ok.
If I execute Kodi I can see it perfectly inscribed into my screen.
The problem starts when I execute a film ... Madvr infacts compress the image ratio.
So I've setted MadVr in this way:
> Automatically detect hard coded black bars
> crop black bars.
Now I'm playing some 2.35:1 film but the result is not right.
Can some one suggest me righty settings?

I've tested madvr's "tone map hdr using pixel shaders" on my sony 4K projector. My settings were:
target peak nits= 250
Tone mapping curve = BT2390
color tweaks for fire & exp. = balanced
high recovery strenght= noneDid you compare Highlight recovery enabled and disabled with the non-tone mapped picture ? You really lose a lot of detail setting highlight recovery to none, I would suggest at least going to the projector thread on AVS Forum and comparing screenshots of None/Low/Medium to the non-tone mapped pictures to see the extent of what you lose.
Highlight recovery uses a lot of processing power but it gives excellent results.

Even if it possible to install it, there is no support for chipset drivers, is there?
I so would love to be able to use madVR with Windows 7 on a Coffee Lake processor.

Even though all you do with that PC is use it for madVR and it is not connected to the Internet, only the network LAN, and your router as a built in firewall?
I have been doing just that for five years now on an older PC, only using it as a HTPC running madVR and it has been working great! :p

Yes, no matter what you do, its always a bad idea. There is no argument to be made for running insecure/unpatched software with known exploits.

The nVidia update to 417.22 still have an issue with full RGB even though limited is selected.
This time this is re-produced by turning HDR on or off either with Windows or the nVidia api, and is present until for instance you change the refresh rate.
Limited colorspace is essential for me with a 2017 9000 series Philips OLED that have no option to use RGB full

1070 Ti is closer to 1080 than 1070 in terms of performance.

As a workaround with almost no quality loss you can use YUV 4:4:4 limited range instead. Edit: Hmm, limited/full range for RGB is working for me, on drivers 417.22. :confused:
It is strange how HTPC features don't seem to be on Nvidia's driver QA team's lists at all. :mad:

Yeah YUV 4:4:4 dont need the full/limited option, but the bug is activated anyway even with YUV 4:4:4. As I mentioned, it's only (for me) triggers when going from HDR to SDR, and is back to normal without crushed blacks/overblown highlights when changing resolution or refresh rate

good day everyone, in the OSD occasionally gives me "dropped frames" 5/6, while all the other values are always 0! above "1 frame repeat every 4.80 5 hours.
everage state between 18 and 19 ms.
max stats on 24/25.
do you think it's regular?

I agree. I went back to 385.28 myself after the failures of the most recent drivers that have broken too many things to make it worth it.
The main advantage of recent drivers was better 3D (frame drop repeat every 13 minutes instead of every 3 minutes), but 3D was broken too recently.
So I disabled drivers updates and went back to 385.28, which is better on every single HTPC aspect apart from 3D (but you have to go back a few versions from the latest to get stable 3D) and gaming.
With a 1080ti or older, I don't think there will be a better version for non-gaming use so I've stopped updating.
I'll revisit this when I upgrade my GPU (not until they deliver HDMI 2.1 and 7nm) as 385.28 won't be an option anymore.

ryrynz or others who want to make a judgment, this OSD is done after 5 minutes, of course just left the movie I reset with Ctrl + re after I did Ctrl + je as you see there are those "dopped frames" (3), yet I did not noticed no type of shot when watching.

Screen shot shows everything is fine. Test with default settings. Use the batch file included in MadVR directory to restore them.

So far with only this can I downscale UHD without framedrops, but it produces horrible aliasing artifacts.

Hey guys,
I have a weird problem with custom modes since I got a new GPU. For my old GPU (GTX 960) I had custom modes for 100 Hz and 119 Hz and noted down all the properties needed to recreate them via madVR. This worked fine all the time, even when the custom modes were gone after a driver update.
But now with the new GPU (RTX 2070) and new drivers (417.22 - I can't use my previous ones since they don't support my new GPU) I can't get a custom mode that has the frequency that I want. I can enter everything I want and test it successfully, but it's actually using something else than I entered.
For example:
When I just create a custom mode with default timings from EDID the mode that is created doesn't show the same values as "current timings" - the vertical back porch is a bit higher. It doesn't matter if I check the values immediately after testing the new mode or after a reboot.
When I then just increase the pixel clock (that was enough to get a good mode with my old GPU), the modified pixel clock is actually saved, but the vertical back porch is again higher than it should be. It is increased in a way that completely negates my increased pixel clock - so the resulting frequency stays the same.
Any idea on how to fix this?
Can you guys still create custom modes with drivers 417.22 and/or a RTX 20x0 GPU?
edit: Found the problem. I need to disable G-Sync when I create/edit a custom mode. Weird that I didn't have to do this with the old GPU/driver, but now that I know about it it's ok.

Nope, that should be the fastest. Did you check scale chroma separately under trade quality for performance?

Did you clean your drivers properly after installing the new GPU and clean out any the optimization data stored in madVR?
If you started from scratch, it might be a matter of driver compatibility with brand new cards. I would just try the automatic optimization provided by madVR before using CRU.

The fastest custom algorithm is Bilinear, which might still be slower on low-end GPUs because it uses the shaders, while DXVA2 scaling can use a dedicated scaler unit (if present) - but you are stuck with its quality.
You can try various trade quality options, as Warner mentioned already "scale chroma seperately" can often help a whole bunch.

I'm just using madVR to create the custom mode. I don't use CRU.
But I've now found the problem. I need to disable G-Sync when I create/edit a custom mode. Weird that I didn't have to do this with the old GPU/driver, but now that I know about it it's ok.

Watching 23.976fps UHD movie with a Win10 system with Nvidia GTX1060 6GB driver 388.13 on a FHD SDR display. It results into 8ms rendering times using JINC everywhere ( plus: scale chroma separately in the trade section ). HDR to SDR pixel shader math checked. CRU applied with 23.976Hz from Nvidia. Windows 1803 version.
The playback gets choppy and frame drops occur in certain scenes. It looks to me as a performance problem. What could be the culprit?

madVR has different settings for up and downscaling so this should only affect downscaling until you are upscaling over the target resolution.
on low end hardware switching the hardware decoder could result in a speed boost too.
DXVA native with default setting will disable "scale chroma separately..." and will slow any kind image downscale making them 3 times slower.
so you have to untick "use DXVA chroma upscale when doing native DXVA decoding" but this cost performance too because madVR has first to undo the DXVA scaling.
so you can use D3D11 decode which only adds an interop which may or may not be faster.
and you can test DXVA copyback which doesn't have a interop but more data is transported which cost processing power too.
DXVA scaling doesn't get alot of love here that chroma problem with nvidia clearly doesn't help.

Side madvr : I need a cropping top-bottom to see content perfectly inscribed.
Once a 16:9 film is played I only need an option to inscribe the 16:9 frame in the center of my 21:9 screen.
In this case it's substantially a downsizing.
Side OS: I'm already ok because the function of the nvidia control panel draw perfectly the desktop inside my 21:9 screen.
So I need settings only side madvr.
Every 21:9 users without anamorfic lens need those feature... Infact my Lumagen radiance have then.
Hoping madvr does.
The problems in my test seems to be related to the way madvr refers to the nvidia drawing of the desktop.
Madvr thinks to have a standard 16:9 desktop.... But in my case is not real... I've changed it into 21:9....

this feature is already present. it can even be used with lens memory on some projectors.
you go to devices-> click on "your projector name" select digital projector -> screen config -> define visible screen area by cropping masked borders.
for 2160 it should be top bottom -~257. if these numbers are wrong i'm pretty sure you will find the correct ones.

Watching 23.976fps UHD on a FHD SDR display results into 8ms rendering times. The playback gets choppy and frame drops occur in certain scenes.Open the OSD and watch the queues do when that problem happens.
If the decoder queue goes low it's a source file read/video decoding problem. Close background programs that may put increased stress on your storage device/increase the queue size/switch to another decoder (D3D11 native is a good option for UHD).
If the render queue goes low it's a GPU problem. Watch the clocks and GPU usage with a monitoring tool (GPU-Z or Windows Task Manager) during playback.
If present queue goes low it could be another program trying to display 3D at the same time and hurting presentation (if you're using windowed mode).

It shouldn't. But you can also create a profile so this only applies to 2160p content.

Network latency maybe? Is the decoder empty when this happens?
Check Control Panel -> Network and Internet -> View network status and tasks.
Click on the active connection and see what it says for Speed. Should say 1.0 Gbps.

You need Write access to the media folder to complete the test.

The issue was simplier than anything else...I have accidentally unclicked HW accelerated decoding by GPU. CPU was decoding HEVC content, but of course struggled.

Hi just bought now a gtx 1070ti. Does Somebody have experience with this card. Coming from a gtx 960 4g and didn't update the driver for along time. Which driver works best for the 1070ti with win 10 64bit. Also any recommendations on settings. Ngu sharp should be possible I think maybe exact the same as for the gtx 1080.

385.28 is still the best option unfortunately. Has anyone posted the issues surrounding the newer versions on the nvidia forum? It's been a year.

What GPU are we talking about? Even my "old" mobile GT650m (kepler) could playback (via CPU) uhd hdr content using moderate settings.

Oh, sh*t :) It's even older than mine (prev gen Fermi), but: it's a desktop GPU!
You can try out these ones as well for 4k hdr content, along with the "scale chroma seperately" setting:
- enable 1 more in trade performance: the 1 below "scale chroma seperately" setting (maybe it's called gamut mapping)
-- this one will screw up the colors, but it helps performance
- disable "highlight recovery" in hdr menu under your display (it's really taxing otherwise)
- enable crop black bars: that will help with wide-screen content a lot (but not with fullscreen ones)
- dithering: ordered
I think this time you should be able to use at least bicubic scalers for both luma and chroma.
If it's working then try to disable the above set gamut mapping setting in trade performance and see what happens.
Btw: I also "had to" buy a new PC, just because of the new HDR algorithm.

Question:

I have Asperger and, from time to time, get some weird ideas in my head. One of the is to run CCleaner (I am on Windows 7) before I play a program with madVR - as to "clear" everything else before I play a program.
Does doing that actually affect anything in terms of the picture (quality) with MPC-HC/madVR or is this just another one of my ideas (that doesn't have an anchor in reality)?
