This is an impossible combination with HDMI 2.0 on such cards. The physics won't let you.
and still no HDMI 2.1 cards on the way... (2080 doesn't have 2.1, too)

AMD did break this quite recently but fixed it again with 18.8.1, i havent tried 18.8.2 yet as I never update drivers unless there is a good reason too these days.
Other than that you may still have something setup wrong.
other than general settings these are the only other prerequisites I am aware of with AMD cards.
- is you OLED setup in MADVR as 10bit or higher?
- do you have use Direct3D 11 for presentation (windows 7 and new) ticked - this is required.
Mine also stops working if either of these are not applied.
ok, got it. Changed my display type to 10bit and now it works.

We could say the highest upscaling section in madvr surely is a monster, 1080ti basically deals with every games but it can't 100% smoothly run the ultimate upscaling setting at all, not even close. My friend just pre-ordered the 2080ti, but he doesn't think the new card could break the ice, madvr is already another 3DMark...
gpu performance
@madshi hi madshi could you improve the efficiency of madvr, beacuse with 1080ti highest setting to upsale a common 480p video to 4k screen makes fps drops to less 10... that's nightmare, madvr eats up too much gpu, maybe it's due to efficiency problem?
Here's a wild idea, theres a whole bunch of settings in Madvr, why not change some of them until performance works out? I can render 480p to 4k using ngu, because I checked the settings. Maybe then you'll stop reposting what is basically saying "You've worked on this for years and many people use it, but did you ever optimize it, in the YEARS of development??"....... yes foobar, it's very optimized, your settings however...

You crazy fool, surely there is a better way to configure MADVR to meet the requirements of your system without configuring MADVR to meet the requirements of your system.

sorry but MADVR default settings being very conservative as they are for obvious reasons, you would still need to configure MADVR to meet the requirements of your more powerful system as most of us already do.

Are there any known issues in latest Nvidia drivers from 2018-08-27, like HDR not working, ...? If there is anything, does it depend on the OS and its version, like Win10 18.03?

Purchase fastest graphics card available, GeForce GTX 1080 Ti.
Install MadVR and set everything to maximum, surely my card can handle it.
It can't.
Complain about performance, madVR must need optimizing 'cos I have the bestest card.
Some say it's my settings, but surely not!

But you're forgetting about SLI and overclocking. Surely there is setup that can handle madVR on max settings.

what are max settings anyway?
sli doesn't work with madVR and no GPU in the next couple of years can run every combination of settings or is even getting close to do it...
and that'S fine because GPU melter settings combination doesn't make any sense.

As for this whole mythical GPU discussion, look at it a different way. I don't NEED a GPU that handles whatever "max settings" means. The idea isn't to punish GPU's. It's to maximize your VIEWING EXPERIENCE. Some "max settings" in madvr does NOT guarantee a better viewing experience. Quite the contrary tbh in that turning everything on max will most likely obliterate the picture quality you get. That's because everything in madvr is a trade-off and a balance. Finding the "perfect" combination to fit your viewing parameters takes time and effort. Just flipping all the switches on and maxing every option out is not guaranteed to give you anything close to a watchable experience.

Also the required processing power also increases with pixel count and fps. So a low-res video might be fine being quadrupled by the most expensive algorithm, but a high-res Video might not work. That doesn't mean the expensive algorithm is unusable - it's just not suitable for some scenarios.
If you were to run a mythical 8K screen, you would easily bump into GPU limits even on medium algorithms I'm sure.

Usual case of not using profiles effectively.. Would be lovely if madvr could auto adjust. People just gotta be reasonable and understand that the differences in image can be so very minor and make a huge difference between something watchable or not. I ain't gonna 2x NGU a 4k 60fps video and downscale with SSIM 2D for example. My 1060 has enough of a workout doing that on full HD video.

With current madVR, when processing->artifact removal->reduce compression artifacts selected with 'activate only if comes for free (as part of NGU sharp), does it only being applied with NGU sharp, or the other NGU family can also benefit from it?
I know madshi has mentioned it somewhere earlier which has been buried, appreciate it if someone can confirm the answer.

Only NGU Sharp ATM. There may be some benefit in future with the other variants but we'll have to wait for that.

I learnt my lesson when I went from a 270x to a 980ti, never waste your money on a GPU for MadVR. The programme does a great job sharpening up a picture, but the source is far more important than the GPU in your system.

there are one or two pitfalls on both AMD and NVIDIA cards getting HDR working, should be added to the help docs, or at least the minimum prerequisites like 10 bit set in MADVR and DIRECT3D11 ticked etc.

It worked for me when going from a GTX 750 Ti to a GTX 1050 Ti at 1080p. Using higher levels of RCA and NGU very high instead of NGU high with video add-on content through DSPlayer actually provided a noticeable improvement. It also made it possible to use features such as HDR -> SDR at full quality.
Some of us definitely notice and appreciate the difference. Everyone's mileage will vary.

A fairly low power card may also get hot and loud, a faster card can be run at high quality settings before its gets too loud, I certainly appreciated my move from RX 460 to RX580. My RX460 could just barley manage NGU Sharp low and when it got hot the fans were quite loud. My RX580 also gets loud when its hot but its completely silent at the same settings I ran the RX460 at.

@huhn I think mclingo means that even if your card has a good quality cooling system, using it at lower power is still gonna make less noise.
I'm sure that for a constant manufacturer build quality, an RX580 is gonna make less noise than an RX460 on the same workload.
huhn
8th September 2018, 12:21
getting a faster card because you think it will be not as loud even through the old card can do the same workload is ignorance over proper cooled cards. it's not rare that a 560 and a 580 have very very similar cooling solutions.
good low-mid range cards have a very little difference in term of noise between idle and full load. madVR is not furmark and is not able to use every part of the GPU like literally every game too.

I get what you mean but come on, you really think a 185W TDP card running at 40-50% usage is not gonna be quieter than a 75W TDP card?
No manufacturer is gonna waste money by putting exactly the same cooler on both.

WTF Micrococks, the new update for Windows 10 that added the new "Focus assist" feature pretty much crippled my transition from windowed mode to exclusive mode to the extent that I thought my graphics card was broken (it sometimes also crashed my system after playback ended or I exited a game). So if anybody else is having problems just go to windows settings and disable ALL THE THINGS in Focus assist. Mother fucking morons adding features nobody needed or asked for, this is just one part of a long list of bullshit like "game mode" or "notification center". Wish I could go back to windows 7.

regardless of your opinion on this the reality is that my 580 is almost completely silent (fan runs about 40%) doing the identical load my 460 did where the fan was running at 60-70% and considerably louder.
and it was obvious to me this was going to be the case.

the same cooler to me it will have some difference but mass production can be quite cheap.
and i a 90 % loaded GPU can produce less noise than a 40 % GPU only the cooler matters https://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/msi-geforce-gtx-1080-ti-gaming-x-trio-review,10.html
a proper passive cooled cards can't be beat by a good cooling solution. TDP is not that important.
it's far cheaper to buy a better cooled card than a bigger card that is only used for half of it'S power.

I wonder if madshi finds a way to utilize upcoming NVidia RTX ray tracing cores to benefit video playback. Perhaps AI capabilities of NVidia GPU's can perform more accurate and faster frame interpolation?
BTW, what is the general advice and\or concensus on settings for 1440p displays. I just got this sweet 32" LG VA G-Sync 144Hz panel and it's only 8 inches smaller than my 40" 1080p VA TV with same contrast ratio, but maxing out at 60Hz. I thought about just switching to use that monitor as, but non-standard 1440p along with G-Sync make it complicated to select settings for the best visuals

Its curious that people try to come up with new use-cases while we already had a Neural Network algorithm in madVR before, for image doubling: NNEDI3. Image scaling should be a breeze for the Tensor Cores, considering they are even using that as a gaming feature called DLSS - Deep Learning Super Sampling. Now their algorithm is not going to be quite as high quality as a madVR scaler might be, but it also needs to run on top of 3D rendering and whatnot, so it has to be ultra fast.
A new Neural Network based scaler with more complexity/quality then NNEDI3, but compensating for the low performance of the added complexity by using Tensor Cores sounds like a rather logical step.

the speed of DLSR is ridiculously fast it can super sample 4k

Open cru, in detailed resolution add 3840x2160 23.000 with the information provided by madvr.
In the detailed resolution section there are only two slots left. What are you supposed to do if you want entries for 23 up to 30 fps?
The custom resolution feature seems to work again with the newest nvidia driver, but only for 23 to 30 fps recordings and a 8 bit color. That's not a big deal for 10-bit hdr movies.
