Grab top border of the MPC-HC window and slide down, it should crash. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/16282309/MPC-HC/crash.png
Oh! That's too easy... :D
Nice V-nice indeed :thanks:
Well, don't get your hopes up too high and too fast. We'll have to see how it plays out. It depends mostly on tiben20 and his willingness to work on this with me. I've done my part (though there still may bugs in it), now it's tiben20's turn to try to make this work in XBMC. He's got a weird crash in madVR and didn't reply to me since then. So I don't know if this will work out or not.
I experience some weirdness with the "adjust queue sizes to GPU RAM size" setting.
With the SAME file (a 1080p mov trailer), I experience the following behavior:
If "adjust queue sizes to GPU RAM size" is enabled (automatic), then madVR uses 20/12/12/3. In this case rendering is reported as 20ms and I get crazy presentation glitches.
If "adjust queue sizes to GPU RAM size" is disabled and I set both CPU queue size/GPU queue size to 8 (8/8/8/3) (=madVR 0.77 defaults), then rendering is reported as 12ms and I get 0 presentation glitches.
In other words, the automatic setting/higher queue sizes have a detrimental effect on performance. Is this normal/expected?
No, it's not. Which GPU RAM size does madVR detect (see Ctrl+J)? Can you please try 20/8/8/3 and 12/12/12/3 to find out whether the CPU or GPU queue size is the problem?
Yes my 13" inch 2010 model macbook pro's gpu is integrated into the cpu with shared memory. However, it used to work fine with windows XP professional 32 bit on my bootcamp before changing to windows 7 ultimate 32bit now.
Well, probably the GPU drivers behave different in win7, or maybe the OS itself. As I said, I will try to get a hold of my sister's laptop, but I can't promise anything.
Now it is even worse. Consumption of GPU RAM reported in madVR is too low. I don't have any problem related with it, but if someone have low mem GPU than I believe madVR will set too high queue size and it will glitch.
madVR only lists the memory it uses itself. Is it possible that some other application or the OS itself is consuming all the memory on your OS? What happens if you close the media player? How much RAM usage do you get reported then? Also please double check with GPU-Z or another tool, just to make sure that the process explorer got things right. Thx.
FWIW, madVR now doesn't look at how many RAM it consumes, anymore, in order to decide on the queue sizes. It only look at the detected RAM size and has fixed queue sizes for specific RAM sizes. So the information about how much RAM madVR uses has only informational character right now.
It now seems to correctly show GPU RAM usage of madVR only, while ignoring global GPU RAM usage. Not a major problem as long as users are aware that madVR may run out of memory when the OSD shows GPU RAM at ~90-95% (or less if other programs using GPU RAM are open) usage rather than 100%. Either way, I'd rather have it like this, compared to the previous behavior which was wildly inaccurate.
Well, of course I could just make the OSD clearer and indicate that it only shows the RAM madVR itself uses, and not the global RAM consumption. But since it's only an information in the debug OSD and nothing more, I don't consider it a big problem at the moment.
I think you get 720p60, or something between that and 720p48. If I set the monitor to 50Hz, I get dropped frames (visible, and through the OSD) - at 59Hz, it looked fine and reported no dropped frames.
Yeah, makes sense. I'll probably add extra support for 60p content sooner or later, so that 60p can be properly decimated to 24p, but it won't come too soon.
Madshi, can you tell me please, what are the determining factors in keeping the present queue full?
It always drops right down after the initial queue up and it never recovers, dropping down to 0-2 or so.
I went through all the options in previous versions, 0.80 hasn't changed anything in this area for me, thanks.
Are all other queues always full? You're talking about fullscreen exclusive mode, I guess? Which GPU? Which OS? Have you changed the flush settings?
Window 7 SP1, Zoom Player 8 Max, mVR .80
New problem with Zoom Player 8 and mVR .80 : Coming out of Fullscreen Exclusive Mode into windowed mode causes Zoom Player to act very funny. It freezes, then stutters, the borders of ZP change shape oddly, then finally plays normally again. This is a new problem I have only seen with mVR .80 and only exists with Exclusive Fullscreen mode on. No problems like this with earlier versions of mVR. Going into Exclusive Fullscreen Mode is ok, it's just coming out of it. Thanks
I can reproduce at least some of this, will have a look at that.
Anyway, I have great news to report, .80 solves my problems!
Good to hear!
Thanks madshi, did not expect this so soon!
Soon? I've been working on this for 3-4 weeks. Implementing IVTC was more difficult than I had expected... :scared:
One thing about this, madshi. When adding "23p" or "24p" to the file name, deinterlacing gets turned off (it says "override"), so IVTC doesn't work.
Oooops. I think can use "47i" or "48i" instead. But then you have to disable the madVR option to not deinterlace 48i content. Argh, I think I need to rethink the logic a bit.
My upload and render queues randomly decide to go down 2-4 frames each and then back up resulting in dropped frames sometimes. I have no idea what is causing this.
Maybe some software/service that is installed on your PC and is burning CPU power sometimes?
@ IVTC: I was under the impression that my AMD card does IVTC through DXVA when you switch 'pulldowndetection' on ? Then is does recognize 3:2 etc. and video runs smooth. Or is this something completely different ?
DXVA1/2 does not support decimating. So although both ATI and NVidia (probably also Intel) do proper IVTC, they do that without decimating, so you end up with 60p or 30p, but not with 24p. In other words: When using DXVA2 deinterlacing, you can't get rid of the 3:2 judder. madVR's IVTC algorithm properly decimates, so you get true 24p output. Besides, I think there's a good chance that madVR's IVTC algorithm is superior to those used by ATI/NVidia/Intel, but I'll have to double check that before really claiming it.
@I gather auto reso-switching works as intended now ?
It should have for a while already.
When i open a 23p movie file in MPC-HT, it starts on my primary. When i switch to full screen on my secondary, does the resoswitching work there ?
Yes.

MPC-HC opened, without playing anything(Aero disabled):
GPU-Z reports 41MB of used GPU memory.
ProcessExplorer reports 26.9MB(dedicated memory) and 26.3MB(system memory)
Playing a 1080p video using madVR:
madVR reports usage of 115MB.
GPU-Z reports usage of 413MB.
Process Explorer reports usage of 400MB(dedicated memory) and 153MB(system memory).
Something does seems odd...
Nvidia Geforce 8500GT, if that matters.
Edit: Not using any hardware decoding.

Madshi, new version is working A-OK aside from one minor difference which I tweaked. Basically I was also noticing frame drops and low queues with the auto settings which are determined by my GPU's ram total. I have re-attained smooth playback by setting the queues to CPU:12, GPU:8 and disabling use a separate thread for presentation to stop MPC-HC from hanging when skipping through files. Everything else is at defaults for me aside from also disabling decoding and changing scaling to: softcubic 70 - chroma, bicubic 75 luma up/down

Somehow I had in mind that IVTC was one of those "foreseeable future" options without very high priority :)
Oooops. I think can use "47i" or "48i" instead. But then you have to disable the madVR option to not deinterlace 48i content. Argh, I think I need to rethink the logic a bit. This enables deinterlacing, but switches to 59p though. BTW, the option to not deinterlace 48i content seems to be "overridden" by the 47/48i tag in the file name, so it always deinterlaces.

Auto queues set:
Decoder: 19-20/20
Upload: 11-12/12
Render: 11-12/12
Present: 10-12/12
The upload and render queues go to 9-12/12 every 5 seconds on two completely different machines with two completely different gpus. This is definitely not related to my GPU or CPU. Also note that I'm using different resizing algorithms on both machines.

Is it possible that some other application or the OS itself is consuming all the memory on your OS?.
I was talking hypothetically, actual only thing that is wrong is that ram counter, but as you say it is not important…
madVR only lists the memory it uses itself. Is it possible that some other application or the OS itself is consuming all the memory on your OS? What happens if you close the media player? How much RAM usage do you get reported then? Also please double check with GPU-Z or another tool, just to make sure that the process explorer got things right. Thx.
GPU-Z, MSI Afterburner and process explorer reports same amount of used memory.
Could you look at this screenshots:
idle, without playback (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/16282309/mad/idle_.png)
1080p, deinterlacing off, bluray (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/16282309/mad/1080p.deinterlacing_off.png)
1080p, deinterlacing on, bluray (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/16282309/mad/1080p.deinterlacing_on.png)
480p, big buck bunny (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/16282309/mad/480p_.png)
If a picture says more than 1000 words, you should understand what the problem is ;) But if that counter is only informative and didn't affect any madVR function than it is not so important to fix :)
EDIT: Of course 1080i ;p
It only look at the detected RAM size and has fixed queue sizes for specific RAM sizes.
What if someone have other application that consumes GPU RAM heavily? I think queue sizes should be set dynamically depending on global free GPU RAM. For example when we run few instance of mpc-hc we can reach ram limit, I think madVR should lower queue to prevent such thing. But you are developer and you know what is best for madVR :)

No, it's not. Which GPU RAM size does madVR detect (see Ctrl+J)? Can you please try 20/8/8/3 and 12/12/12/3 to find out whether the CPU or GPU queue size is the problem?
madVR reports 512MB for my card, which is correct.
With "adjust queue sizes to GPU RAM size" enabled (auto):
20/12/12/3, ram: 182/512, rendering: 21ms
With "adjust queue sizes to GPU RAM size" disabled:
- 8/8/8/3, ram: 134/512, rendering: 12.80ms
- 20/8/8/3, ram: 134/512, rendering 12.90ms
- 12/12/12/3, ram: 182/512, rendering: 21ms
Looks like GPU queue size is the problem..

I'm getting alot of dropped frames with 080 compared to 079 with no settings changed. It seems with 080 getting batches of 5 presentation glitches every 15 to 20 seconds that cause the stutters on my 2nd gpu.
Confirmed its not happening with 079 (presentation glitches do not increment at all) on the same gpu.
I also noticed that with 080 an aero message shows in the stats (2nd line) that is not there in 079 when using identical settings. Is that normal?
[update]
Just to add manually setting the queues like fairchild suggests does not fix the stutters for me.

The GeForce 440MX is not a DX9 GPU. You need a DX9 GPU, as explained in the first post of this thread.

Well Version 0.78 worked for me out of the box on my HD 3400, Version 0.79 didn't. Version 0.80 Worked after 4 hours of continuous tinkering (I even activated settings usually not activated to get smooth playback like overshoot max latency). It works now with all my 720p video only in full screen exclusive mode. Windowed is borked dropped frames, glitches all 9 yards.
Anyone know how I can save the madVR settings? export its registry file?
EDIT Recanted. Drops frames as well!
EDIT2 I reset settings and deactivated decoding and Use separate device for presentation, lowered GPU queue to 6 and that seems to fixed it. Scaling is set at Bicubic 60 for all. So it seems Auto settings are fracked.
EDIT 3 HOLY! the quality is AWESOME with anime :D Thanks alot Madshi!

Are all other queues always full? You're talking about fullscreen exclusive mode, I guess? Which GPU? Which OS? Have you changed the flush settings?
Yeah they were still full, it was in FSE mode. I found the problem, it was 'overshoot max frame latency' that was dropping the present queues
to 0-2 after a minute or so after starting playback (550 Ti running 7 x64.) I've got it disabled now (It did help with glitches earlier)
It's not the only thing causing that, not setting appropriate flush settings after presentation does it too. Setting up FSE optimally can be rather time consuming huh?
It seems like I either have to choose between keeping the present and render queues high and not dropping frames but getting the odd presentation error or having the queues drop right down but having zero presentation errors.
Finding the sweet spot isn't easy, overshooting the max frame latency does wonders for removing the glitches, if only it didn't drop the present and render queues so much..

Ok, I'll add Bicubic 100 to the to do list.
Thanks looking forward to it.
0.80 fixed the black screen/freezes with auto queue with an X2300M.
The high priority build worked fine with X2300M and 9500GT in fact it worked a little better then 0.79 with the former gpu, it played 480p with fewer frame drops.

Hi guys,
i was asking for advice about gpu for madvr few days ago.
I chose two cards:
ATI HD6770 or HD6870
I definitely need one of these, cause sapphire make these models with FLEX support, so no need for expensive active displayport adapter.
So the question is, is it worth the plus money to get the 6870?
The difference between them here is ~100$ (~30-40%), so pretty big.
Will i see any problems (regarding madvr) with the 6770 that i wont with the 6870?
Thanks!

Well I don't put myself in position of a pro. But I must ask you a few questions:
1. What type of Content do you have?
2. What is your setup like?
3. Did you compare the 2 cards in AMD website? http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/amd-radeon-hd-6000/hd-6870/pages/amd-radeon-hd-6870-overview.aspx#2 vs http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/amd-radeon-hd-6000/hd-6770/Pages/amd-radeon-hd-6770-overview.aspx#2 (click on specifications).
4. As far as madVR is concerned: Minimal required specs as mentioned by madshi:
- graphics card with full D3D9 / PS3.0 hardware support
- at least 128MB of dedicated graphics card memory
- Windows XP or newer
Finally IMO MadVR should work fine with 6770 (dude I have it working on an HD3430 lol) and if that is ONLY what you will use it for i.e madVR IMHO it really isn't worth the shelling out an extra 100$ if you're on a tight budget UNLESS there is a feature in 6870 (like dual HD bitstreaming) you absolutely must have :p or it pretains to your setup. I stand corrected if anyone would like to add or amend what I said.

In my opinion 6770 is strong enough. I have HD5750 which is weaker and I manage to run MADVR with Lav Codec + Raw ffdshow with frame doubling script in avisynth and I watch 1080p/Bluray movies on my 42inch full HD TV .I play movies in 1080p24 resolution And never had any dropped frames even with Lancroz 8 scalling which should be the heaviest resizer. Oh and I also use YCMS . So if you don't play very heavy games even 6770 is enough. Maybe it worth for you to wait a little for the HD 7000 series or Geforce 600 Series.
My system is:
Quadcore q6600 (weakest quadcore cpu)
6GB ram that runs on 667 Mhz (not much)
ATI HD 5750

I think there should be a configuration utility included with madVR to tweak all the settings GPU related. Honestly I'm fed up wit tweaking madVR so it won't drop frames. I set it to auto and it sets the GPU queue to 4, sometimes 5, sometimes 12 and then it works fine for an hour and after that it says the memory is 100MB over how much the card has. Then it brings it down to 4 and it starts dropping frames every 5 seconds. On top of that the refresh rate frame drop/repeat calculation is never steady and goes from seconds to minutes to hours and back to seconds. This is on two different computers with two completely different configurations in terms of CPU, RAM, GPU, and GPU RAM.

6700 series are rebadges of 5700 series, which only for HTPC including madVR are overkill. I got a 5770 and it just breezes through. So it's more than good enough, but it is also last gen. Disable Auto queue settings Manually adjust the queue settings till you hit the sweet spot. IF it doesn't work as desired, consider adjusting number of ahead frames in each mode and the extra settings down (forgot them LOL). BTW What GPU are you using? this seems to be happening with ATI cards.

The most demanding material you will come across is 1080i60, some users claim that it is necessary to have a relatively high performance card like GT450 to obtain glitchfree playback.
However I use a GT430 and I have not experienced any problems that I could relate to poor performance of the GPU.

For the record, even NVIDIA admits that the 520 is too slow for full coverage of all video formats. The 430 is the absolute minimum i would go with (and its already super cheap).

With my GT430 I sometimes need to switch madVR into the "old path", but as I understand it, that's rather a driverissue than a performance issue..huh ?

FYI, looks like anyone waiting to get a 28nm GPU as soon as they come out will need to avoid HD7600 series and below as they will just be rebranded 40nm GPUs. The lowest end 28nm GPU will be the HD7700 series. Think of it as a replacement for the HD5770 (similar power consumption, midrange performance).

Thanks madshi for the new release, now Madvr 0.8 works fine with Nvidia Optimus GT550 and MPC-HC or Pot Player :)

I'm wondering if any of you guys could help me out?
Have been using MadVR for a few months and it's been glitch free but ive recently changed my tv and avamp and updated LAV filters and MadVR to the latest versions and now the playback isn't smooth. I get slight juddering which you notice when the camera is panning across the screen sometimes the sound cuts out for a split second.
cpu is intel core2 6700, nividia gt430, 4gb ram. I use MPC-HC with LAV and MadVR playing 1080p DTS-MA mkv files mainly.
What should i be looking for when i press ctrl-j? I don't really understand a lot of what im looking at but would appreciate some pointers...
Thanks

Disable Auto queue settings Manually adjust the queue settings till you hit the sweet spot. IF it doesn't work as desired, consider adjusting number of ahead frames in each mode and the extra settings down (forgot them LOL). BTW What GPU are you using? this seems to be happening with ATI cards.
I have a hunch that it had to do with how I updated madVR (I replaced the existing files) versus a cleaner installation method.
Both machines are running Windows 7 x64 with latest ffdshow, latest MPC-HC & latest LAV Splitters.
Machine 1: Core2Quad 2.66Ghz; ASUS nVIDIA Geforce 9500GT TOP (512MB Dedicated Video Memory)
Machine 2: Core2Duo 2.66Ghz; ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 (512MB Dedicated Video Memory)
Both machines give 20 on the decoder queue and 12 on on all the other queues in auto queue mode (having set exclusive to 12 as well). At first the memory was showing ~617/512MB and that seemed like the problem but after cleaning up everything and redoing the installation it went down to ~198/512MB and works with stability for the most part. I might have to tweak it in the future though.

* fixed: DXVA deinterlacing produced wrong colors (only with HD videos + ATI)
Madshi, i still get a color shift but now i get it not only in .MKV, but in everything i have on my PC, i tested with .MOV, DVD (.VOB, .IFO), .AVI and .MKV.
UPDATE:
Weird, ive turnt off my TV, enabled Dynamic Range 16-235 and Pulldown detection in CCC, and the colors were alright. When i reverted back to my old settings Dynamic Range Off and Pulldown detection Off, the colors didnt shift anymore. Anyways, its probably fixed :).

This sounds not great, but freakin AWESOME!! Right now I use MPC-HC as external player with a .xml script. This works ok but it looks a little clumsy: when you start playing the movie from within XBMC, the windows desktop is shown for a few miliseconds and you get a (harly noticable, but still) screen flicker.

Look for Dropped/delayed frames (should be down the OSD when you press ctrl+j) as well as presentation glitches (in full-screen exclusive mode FSE). Needless to say the optimum value should be ZERO for all those. If you still have problems Disable the Auto Settings in general rendering and adjust the CPU/GPU queue till you hit the sweet spot (For me its a ratio; on my Archeological HD3430 the CPU/GPU queue ratio is usually 2:1, the HD5770 worked out of the box after disabling Use a seperate device for presentation not a very popular feature with ATI cards). IF you still face issues Try adjusting backbuffer values in windowed mode and ahead frames in fullscreen exclusive (the value of 8 worked for me on both but your YMMV in FSE experiment with values between 6-10). IF all of this fails you might as well try the last resort options in the FSE that are under "don't use the following options unless you absolutely need them for glitch-free playback"
hope it helps!
NB As for installation methods. When it comes to filters I always Recommend a CLEAN INSTALL. Overwriting files of previous installation is asking for trouble. Remove the old renderer. Perform a thorough cleanup especially of the registry (use a registry cleaner a good one, or if you're like me & you know your way around the registry. Find the obsolete values and banish them to oblivion, a back up is good if things go south).
