DVD sub-menus become unresponsive when "Keep Aspect Ratio" is disabled in MPC-HC and the DVD sub-menu has a different aspect ratio then the root menu.
Does that only occur with madVR? Or also with other renderers? Can you upload a sample of such a DVD (only the menus)?

I have come across a problem with Zoom Player when using MadVR.
Playback won't start on the first try when using the delay playback start until renderer queue is full option and Zoom Players automatic subtitle stream selection. It will start normally if you press play a second time or don't use the above option.
I've analyzed this and the problem is this:
(1) Playback is started by the media player.
(2) madVR blocks the playback start because the queue is not yet full. But madVR makes a note to itself to manually start playback when the queue gets full.
(3) Playback is *stopped* (don't know by whom). As a result madVR will no longer start playback when the queue is full.
(4) A seek is performed.
(5) Playback is paused.
As a result playback stays paused until you manually start it. From what I remember, I had talked with Blight about this sometime in the past. There might be a problem with madVR's "delay" feature when switching streams very quickly in the middle of playback. But if ZP switches streams itself at the start of playback, I consider this ZP's fault. ZP could modify the order of doing things (namely switch subtitle streams *first* and only afterwards starting movie playback). That would fix this problem. And it shouldn't be hard for Blight to do...

Automatic film vs. video detection is not really implemented in madVR yet. If you switch to "auto", madVR will always use DXVA2 deinterlacing. In theory DXVA2 is supposed to automatically detect film vs. video by itself and deinterlace accordingly.I seem to recall it doing a much better job of detection the last time I used it, which was back when deinterlacing was first implemented before there was even an option to force film/video deinterlacing, so I wondered if perhaps something had broken, as everything I have tried so far is detected as video now.
It could very well be something to do with my system now being on Windows 8 though, just like the refresh rate issue I'm experiencing, so hopefully it's something that might be fixed in the next driver revision from Nvidia. (I'm wary of trying the new beta due to previous beta drivers causing issues with madVR)
But it's not really a problem for me, I'm happy to leave madVR forcing film and change it to video manually the few times it's necessary.
Yes, that's how I understood it and whatever chroma or luma both subjectively look more "3D" to me in 30fps when AR is enabled. Fast moving objects have less EE around them, due to the (far) less visible ringing so everything looks less "flat" and the highly sought after "pop effect" is very much there to my eyes :cool:There is minimal ringing with SoftCubic to begin with, and the anti-ringing filter can cause a considerable amount of aliasing when used with it. (which gets worse the softer you go) I would go as far as to suggest that the anti-ringing option be removed from SoftCubic altogether, but someone will probably complain, just as someone wanted Bicubic 100 implemented. (which looks terrible in my opinion)
Can you please provide samples where SoftCubic looks better with the anti-ringing filter enabled rather than not?

Well, the first thing to check then would be to test with EVR/VMR, to confirm whether it's a problem with the DXVA2 deinterlacing itself, or whether madVR is doing something wrong.

Well, I'm colorblind and left-handed so YMMV as usual and as much as we all hear differently, we also see and process data very differently. Lefties and righties really have a completely different way to process the incoming data from the visual cortex AFAIK, and getting older I've learned to partly compensate for my colorblindness. FWIW, several army corps use colorblind ppl in order to detect camouflage "normal" ppl can't see...so asking for a harmless feature to be removed just because YOU find it superfluous seems a bit intolerant to me.
All this said, I'll try to come up with a sample but it's all highly subjective and at the end of the day what truly matters is our own satisfaction...be it placebo, technically funded, or a simple matter of preference between ringing and aliasing. I believe we're all stunned by mVR's PQ using our own favorite settings, otherwise we wouldn't be in here :p

LAV Video + madVR + MPC-HC
Video Frame -> Disable "Keep Aspect Ratio" in MPC-HC
Open DVD/BD
Navagate->Title Menu
Click Setup
Result: The highlighted bar overlay for the Subtitles On and Main buttons cannot be clicked. madVR has placed the clickable area in the wrong location.
(Before I thought it was a hang since the menu felt lagged and I didn't notice where madVR had moved the clickable area above the normal location to click, but it isn't.)

What does the madVR OSD say about movie resolution and target rectangle? Have you changed Lanczos to Jinc in the "image upscaling", "image downscaling" or "chroma upscaling" section, when doing this test?
Okay, I didn't notice this but its 1440*1080 16:9... So I guess there's scaling horizontally. Sorry for the bother.

Hi everybody,
I just wanted to give my feedback on this great renderer. It's by far the best video renderer out there, but IMHO it misses a few things to be a final product.
Here's the list of features I'd like:
- an installer with full UAC compatibility
- transfer the debug mode switching and any other manual actions into the tray icon
- x64 version (atm it's often the only thing that prevents people from using MPC-HC x64)
- defaults shouldn't enable potentially problematic features (decoding bypasses DirectVobSub, exclusive mode disables the standard player's interface and other GUI applications)
Other than that, my graphic card is NVIDIA GTX 550 Ti, and Jinc + AR upsampler is too slow for it with HD videos, because my monitor's resolution is 2560x1440. I just find it surprising, because the card is pretty good, so I stick to Lanczos. Shame.
Cheers,
Mirage

Another issue with that DVD menu I sent you.
In FSE mode, the very bottom horizontal row of navigation buttons on all menus and sub-menus are not highlighted when you hover over them.
Works normally in Windowed and Overlay mode.
Will only work in FSE mode if you disable "Show Seekbar", even though the seekbar is never shown on DVD Menus.

Time to upgrade buddy, that's the issue with high resolution flat screens....their prices have drastically dropped but it takes raw power to drive them. Every year all graphic cards but the highest ends become obsolete, and even a 90€ GTX650 is faster than your 550Ti now.
I would say that it's anything but harmless, though its impact is minimised if you are only using SoftCubic 50 and not higher levels.
It's optional, so leave it disabled if you like...that's how harmless it is. I tried a whole bunch of SD videos and I always find the picture more 3d'ish when AR is enabled, whatever on chroma or luma and I like how softcubic50 provides the subjectively best looking picture to my eyes....I watched two movies today and I couldn't really believe my eyes: sharpness, smoothness, colors, everything is as good as it gets! can't wait for the 660 I just ordered to arrive

Hi madshi,
I have a request for a future release:
I have a laptop with an Intel HD 3000 GC and a NVIDIA 555M GT GC.
When I watch movies on my HDTV using HDMI, the NVIDIA 555M GT GC is used.
When I watch movies on my laptop, the Intel HD 3000 GC is used.
The thing is, settings for "scaling algorithms" and "rendering" are different for the two GC (especially "scaling algorithms").
My request is to move the "scaling algorithms" and "rendering" settings under a "graphic card" level like with the "device" level.
Thanks

There is a seeking bug with subtitles. Sometimes the old line(s) being displayed before a seek, will still be displayed until the end of their duration after a seek, overlapping any new lines from after the seek. Somewhat hard to reproduce, yet it occurs more often when using the madVR FSE mode seekbar for some reason.
In FSE mode its easy to reproduce. madVR must be doing something odd when seeking.
When i seek using MPC-HCs seek bar, the DVD Navigator sends a proper BeginFlush/EndFlush sequence to the decoder. When i seek with madVRs FSE bar, it just starts sending frames from another point in time, it doesnt flush the decoder. This also causes image corruption for a few frames.
I can probably make the old lines disappear if a new one comes up, but it doesn't look like i can make them disappear instantly. This is rather odd behaviour, i'm inclined to blame madVR for weird seeking. :p
Possible madVR FSE seekbar bug with DVD Navigator.

I still trying to find out what card to I should get to be able to use Jinc3 for Image + chroma scaling everything (PAL, SD, HD, 4K) to 2560x1440.
Would a GTX-670 cut it or is a GTX-680 needed for this ?
Anyone any experience in this area ?
The reason I consider this upgrade is :
- it would really be a shame not being able to properly scale the today most common video format (1080p) to the monitor resolution.
- I don't expect anything other than 1080p for film/video in the near future (4K is still "far" away), we will keep seeing 1080p for looong time.
- I don't expect higher resolutions than 2560x1440 to become common too soon. I'm not even sure I'd like a 4K monitor : it would feel like I need to "search" something on the screen because of the higher viewing angle/ smaller text.

- transfer the debug mode switching and any other manual actions into the tray icon I think it's better to leave it as is. Debug mode is only for some users and they doesn't need useless GUI function to change it.
- x64 version (atm it's often the only thing that prevents people from using MPC-HC x64) Why would you want x64 version? There are no benefits.
- defaults shouldn't enable potentially problematic features (decoding bypasses DirectVobSub, exclusive mode disables the standard player's interface and other GUI applications) exclusive mode is one of the most important feature of the madVR and should be active by default :)
Saying that I mean that many more importanf thing are to do in madVR :) madshi know what he is doing :)

The improvement only works on non-compressed very clean computer type sources.
It will stop working as soon as the video stream isn't perfectly clean, anymore.
6233638's very clean computer type image (http://www.abload.de/img/sm-inv6njf7.png)
Resized to 800% w/ Jinc3 AR (madVR 0.84.3 vs. madVR 0.84.5) (http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/155769)
It's a secondary Jinc AR algorithm which only helps with lossless old computer games like above, and probably vector images.
There is likely no benefit on compressed film, anime, and 3dcg, since this secondary Jinc AR algorithm would never activate 99.9% of the time.

Ok, can reproduce it now. The problem is very complex. The actual position of the buttons is not specified by madVR. The DVD Navigator asks the renderer a couple of things (source resolution, target rectangle, preferred aspect ratio) and then calcalutes the button positions based on the information retrieved from the renderer. Unfortunately the DVD Navigator is extremely stupid and expect information to be provided in a very weird way. Of course the MS renderers actually do provide it that way. But (at least in XP) you can still see the DVD Navigator fail if you manually change the aspect ratio of the video to a different value. The main problem is that the DVD Navigator asks the renderer for the "preferred aspect ratio", but actually requires this aspect ratio to be the one which is actually used. If it isn't the button positions are wrong. The "preferred aspect ratio" is not documented to be the one actually used, though, it's just the one the renderer sets as preferred. There's no direct function available to ask the real aspect ratio, but you could calculate it from the source and target rectangles.
Anyway, I've changed a few things in madVR (and hope that this didn't break anything :() to make madVR report things as stupidly as the MS renderers do, and that seems to make the DVD Navigator happy. Of course, if you change the aspect ratio in MPC-HC, the button positions are wrong with madVR, just as they are with the MS renderers. Nothing I can do about that, unless I break other aspect ratio related features. This is really a big mess...

Maybe your GPU can do Jinc AR for just image upsampling if you use a cheaper algorithm for chroma upsampling? Might be worth a try...
This is another difficult problem. Move the mouse to the lower quarter of the screen, when there is no DVD menu visible, during DVD playback. You'll see that the MPC-HC seekbar will show, making madVR drop out of FSE mode. This is the reason why madVR blocks mouse events in the lower quarter of the screen. MPC-HC changes its behaviour when a DVD menu is active. In that situation the MPC-HC seekbar only shows up if you move the mouse to the very bottom of the screen. That's a clever solution, but unfortunately I don't know any easy way for madVR to know when a DVD menu is active and when not. So in order to stop MPC-HC from showing its own seekbar, I *have* to block the mouse events in the lower quarter of the screen. Otherwise the madVR FSE seekbar would never show because the MPC-HC seekbar would show first, making madVR drop out of FSE mode.
I don't really know a good solution for this. Ok, if I could detect DVD menus, I could do special handling during that situation, but I don't know how to *reliably* detect that.
I have a request for a future release
I will not move scaling algorithms to to the device tab. They don't really belong there. But there will be a different way to achieve comparable functionality in a future version. It will not come very soon, though.

You should leave all/most checkboxes activated in the LAV options (= LAV default settings). Which colorspaces your AMD chip supports doesn't matter because madVR does all the work with custom pixel shaders. The AMD chip won't even know which colorspaces are involved.

madVR v0.84.6 released
http://madshi.net/madVR.zip
* fixed: encrypted DVDs didn't play
* fixed: DVD menu "clickable areas" were not always located correctly
* fixed: DVD menu buttons near the FSE seekbar didn't work
* fixed: some minor cosmetical improvements to DVD menu rendering
* fixed: seeking DVDs in fullscreen exclusive mode didn't flush the decoder
* fixed: frame stepping should now work perfectly
* fixed: MPC-HC froze when creating thumbnails
* fixed: MPC-HC froze when seeking DVDs in Windows XP
* fixed: scaling settings were not always remembered after "restore default"
* 50i and 50p SD sources are now auto detected as having PAL/EBU primaries
Playback of encrypted DVDs should now work without having to decypt them first !!! Please test this, especially on win7 and win8 and let me know if it works for you.
I've had to change some aspect ratio and video size related information behaviour in madVR to make the DVD Navigator work better. I hope there are no negative side effects. But it's possible some smaller follow-up bugs could show up. Let me know if you find anything...

Yes, most probably. I also wondered after installation of MC18 and after I went to the madVR settings that there seem to be some options missing. Now that madshi confirmed that MC18 ships with an old madVR version it all makes sense.
On Windows 7 the path for the madVR files is:
C:\Users\[User]\AppData\Roaming\J River\Media Center 18\Plugins\madvr
It should be safe to just replace everything in there with a new madVR version. I havenīt tried that yet, though.

Now that DVDs are done I hope you'll both delve into 3D next.

I should write an installer for madVR and give it to madshi... That'd be useful.
Thanks for the offer, but I don't really want an installer right now. Maybe when madVR reached v1.0.

Great, thanks! Can anybody check on win8?I can confirm that playback of encrypted DVDs is working in Windows 8!

Playback of encrypted DVDs should now work without having to decypt them first !!! Please test this, especially on win7 and win8 and let me know if it works for you.
Tested Star Wars Episode IV & Lord of the Rings Fellowship of the Ring and both seem to be working on Win7 SP1 x64. So what was the magic that made this work? It's amazing that after being stumped for years, you've been able enable proper encrypted DVD support through trial and error in a matter of days.
I did get a single copy protection failed error on Star Wars when I jumped to some random title through MPC-HC's Navigate menu, but I'm unable to reproduce it. It could have just been LAV Video borking on a menu.
The deinterlacing toggle seems disabled on all 4:2:0 interlaced video and results in a bogus error message:
"Deinterlacing is only supported for YCbCr 4:2:0 sources"
Is that even accurate normally? Don't NVIDIA/AMD GPUs support 4:2:2 deinterlacing as well?

No problem. I'll create one for my own use to update my mc18 installs like I do for lav. If you ever change your mind just let me know.

Mathias:
I may have made this suggestion before, but given how well AR succeeds at suppressing halos, I suggest that you give another shot at resampling through linear light.
This will avoid the "thinning of light on dark features" that using perceptual spaces introduce. For example, this would have a large impact on the "robot" test image (a.k.a. "6233638's very clean computer type image").
TTBOMK, linear light is pretty much the only safe way to handle pathological cases (e.g. digital half-toning).
Again, I'm still a bit puzzled RE: the best way to handle Y'CbCr, and I generally prefer XYZ to linear RGB. So I am not reiterating this suggestion from a position of authoritative knowledge. It's just a suggestion.

This being said, these results truly are impressive: 6233638's very clean computer type image (http://www.abload.de/img/sm-inv6njf7.png)
P.S. Maybe this is cheating, but here is the result with EWA quadratic B-spline windowed Jinc 3, sigmoidized with contrast = 7.5. See what I mean about thinning light features? For example, the white, red and black "icons" on a mustard orange background has the "black" invade on the red, and thin white features are quite small in "your version", as opposed to mine. I think that if you went through linear light, this issue would be reduced. http://web.cs.laurentian.ca/nrobidoux/misc/madVR/robot/EWAQuadraticJincSig7p5.png

There. I now have a script that downloads the latest madvr.zip, extracts it, builds an installer for updating MC18, and a script to run on my HTPC's to install it. :D
