i wonder what projectors in cinemas do...
and i wonder why the thread on AVS where madshi is active is projector related.
so i do a guess here "because he cares about projectors too".
and back to the topic i pretty much ask him why an HTPC user should care or if there is something exclusive.
and you can read this answer. so HTPC will be able to do the "same" or don't need that feature or what ever you interpret into it.
i'm not attacking projectors with that what so ever and i don't asked that to piss him off. i just wanted to know if madVR will be able to do the same or what differentiating this product.
i don't attack HDR tone mapping with that too.

I set the 1080Ti card to RGB 0-255 12bits and madvr to the same. I noticed weeks ago that my NX9 wouldnt display when I set it to RGB, however it only worked if I left it on Auto. I thought it was odd as in the past I had my X9900 set to RGB and everything was fine, I believe if all in the chain is set to RGB, the proj should be in RGB, is that correct?
Yes it is. It should also work if you set it manually to YCC422.
I have a feeling now that since Im using 12bit and auto on the NX9 that Im now doing a conversion to 422 which I believe isnt good....
No it's not, especially as it happens behind madVR's back, and isn't reported by the JVC (which still happily reports RGB 12bits in the info panel).
Am I ok with how I have the card/madvr/NX9 setup at the moment or should I be changing everything to 8bit until JVC fix this?
As I said, I recommend to use RGB Full 8bits with the new JVCs at the moment. This has no visible detrimental effect as long as you force 8bits in madVR as well. If you let bit depth set to "auto" or "10bits or more" in madVR, you will get a lot of banding. The nVidia CP should be set to RGB full 8bits, and you can either set the JVC and madVR to 0-255 if you care about having the correct levels in the desktop, or set the levels to 16-235 in the JVC and in madVR if you mostly care about video content. My HTPC is for movie playback only so I prefer to set both to 16-235 to avoid unnecessary conversions, as the content is in video levels and madVR's 3D LUT works in video levels as well. That way it remains in video levels all along. Using auto for levels in the JVC is fine most of the time, but then you're never sure if something isn't as it should. I use auto for colorspace but I set levels to 16-235 manually to see when something is not done as expected.
JVC has been informed of the forced YCC422 issue at 23/24/25/30p in RGB 12bits and hopefully they will correct it in a f/w update (see https://discuss.avscience.com/index.php?topic=1894.msg11347#msg11347).

The projector will always be there for nostalgia.
But without a custom graded movie designed FOR the very limited ANSI-contrast ratio, It's never going to look RIGHT, because the intent is so far mismatched.
Going forward with big tvs being so affordable, I don't think projection has much to give on standard HDR media, Unless they include a projector grading on the disc..
That is probably much more relevant a Pursuit/ ask from the Disc manufacturer by projector enthusiasts, than Madvr's dynamic tonemapping with regards to Projection.
You would demand this through the projector companies, who would then leverage industry to produce the grading.

Well the good news is , it's already been graded for Projectors at theaters which don't have much higher ANSICR than serious home setups (probably less in many cases),
The consumer such as yourself just needs to get active and Beat the projector company over the head to form a consortium to beat the movie company over the head to include the projector grading..
Everything you guys want already Exists, and can be included without much effort, what need-be is DEMAND..

I hope someone can tell me what is happening or what I am doing wrong. I play 4K 10bit HDR content through Potplayer/madVR but my Epson is reporting 8bit color and BT2020 colorspace. I have my nVidia CP set to RGB Full 12bit which is confirmed in the madVR OSD and the OSD is reporting 10 bit content being sent.

One question concerning RAM usage, as I'm contemplating the upgrade to either a GTX 1070 or a RTX 2060. Is the extra RAM important or are 6GB enough for 4K upscaling (from SD and HD sources)?

Used 1060 is still the go to for madvr,
ALTHOUGH, you gotta watch out for the crappy models which fill the lower ebay prices.
1070 and 2060 would give you NGU (very high), buh imho, the price difference isn't worth it. because 1060 can already do ngu luma very high for HD to UHD upscaling.
the 1070 would allow for NGU Chroma (H/VH) ontop of NGU Luma, but imho, paying higher price for chroma is meh, because the visual difference is very minute.
vRam is a non issue, 4gb is enough. :D

As I said, I recommend to use RGB Full 8bits with the new JVCs at the moment. This has no visible detrimental effect as long as you force 8bits in madVR as well. As I said I knew something was very odd weeks ago when I couldn’t use RGB on my NX9, but I just didn’t know why… I have changed everything in the chain to 8bits and 16/235 (since I only use that PC for video), the image is much cleaner, banding improved so Im happy to have this finally sorted!
Since you were the one to sort this, don’t you think it would be good to inform others on the AVSF NX thread in case they too are using madvr, I think it would be good?
Also when we get a fix from JVC and can return back to 12bit, can you explain what maybe better when playing BDs and UHD films on our madvr setups using 12bit over the 8bit we are doing in the meantime?

Since you were the one to sort this, donÂ’t you think it would be good to inform others on the AVSF NX thread in case they too are using madvr, I think it would be good?
I think most of those using madVR should follow here (if they don't it's their loss :) ), so I wouldn't post something that specific there, it's a bit off topic and technical. I'll mention it in the recommended settings in the JVC calibration thread for the 2019 models (https://discuss.avscience.com/index.php?topic=1850.msg10388#msg10388) though, as there is a short section for madVR users already. I'll announce a sub-thread on calibrating the JVCs for madVR after a new build is out, as I'll also suggest recommended settings for SDR and HDR playback on the JVCs.
Also when we get a fix from JVC and can return back to 12bit, can you explain what maybe better when playing BDs and UHD films on our madvr setups using 12bit over the 8bit we are doing in the meantime?
I wouldn't expect much improvement regarding banding as madVR's dithering is truly excellent (provided the bit depth is set properly in madVR and of course dithering is enabled and set to ordered or error diffusion). There might be a minimal improvement in noise near black, but nothing I could see without pixel peeping, at least not in the few clips I checked. 10bits is important in the content, but for reproduction 8bits seems to be absolutely fine.

As a 1060 6gb owner, I can tell you that if you have any intention of using madvr's tone mapping at all, there WILL be compromises. I honestly wish I had a much faster card but at the time the stupid crypto mining idiots were buying up all our cards. LOL I don't know what current prices look like but if you're looking at tone mapping I'd bump that up to a 1070 to get some breathing room. The 1060 CAN do it...it just requires some...convincing here and there. :)

Are you talking about the fancy live dynamic tonemapping that's in the latest test builds? My 1050 Ti can tone map using the pre-measure method but only for 24p content. I was assuming that a 1060 would do live dynamic tonemapping easily, this is disappointing. :(
I hope that in the 7/8nm next generation there will be a card with 1060/1660 processing power for 75W TDP.

Like I said, it can do it, but, I have to make compromises in some areas. Which is fine. It's just that if you want a more complete experience where you can crank things up, you'll want a faster card.

Yea, the dynamic tone mapping that's being tested right now is pretty hefty on resources. That may change once they get it dialed in.
What compromises ?
Things like changing the chroma scaler from NGU to something that uses less resources like bicubic, changing dithering to ordered, etc. I try to avoid the trade performance options as much as possible but this is all just personal taste. What I mean is you're not cranking chroma scaling to NGU high and other options while tone mapping on a 1060. It's just not capable. But if you compromise some settings, tone mapping works just fine.

I wouldn't bet on this month. It would be nice but they're neck deep in the dynamic tone mapping stuff right now. madshi has been cranking out test builds like they're going out of style. LOL I've not been able to keep up with all of them lately, but, his main testers have and they've been working overtime. I thought he was going to release what he had in late December but he has continued to refine the HDR code. And the result has been WAY worth it.

wait wait wait, hold on.. it's 7ms higher. but still playable. with my current NGU Med setting.
Tested on Lego ninjago movie, Let me test a 16:9 movie, maybe that will push it over the edge.
Does that Overlay on the top right add to render time? It's higher render times but not astronomically so, such that Madshi wouldn't be able to wiggle a few ms out of it to get back to 94.17 performance level right ?
OKOKOK, upon further testing, NGU med is indeed unplayable.
I don't know why, but it seems when i tested 2 minutes ago, Nutcracker 4 realms, the movie (Ngu Medium) plays at 37ms 42ms peak, Maybe this particular movie have very little HDR highlighting, I can't tell
NEARLY Every other movie plays at the 42ms avg 60ms peak.
I don't understand what the difference between the playable and unplayable movies are, since the bitrates are comparable, they're all 4K hdr. ?
SDR performance unchanged.
OK, Figured it out.. (maybe) Nutcrack 4 realm measures almost entirely in the < 200nit range, I guess that's why it's playable, because it doesn't actually trigger the heavier HDR processing.
It doesn't make sense though, cuz it says HDR on the box,
Halloween (2018), also measures almost entirely below 200, yet it is not playable on ngu medium.
OK, Found another one.. Dunkirk (2017).. This one does measure about 200 range, into 300, But also playable with NGU Medium 37ms avg
Hrrm.. I think I've got it now.. The HDR meta data ? Because for Dunkirk it says HDR 323 nit, and Nutcracker , HDR 183 nit.
So, If that number is BELOW the Target Nit setting of my monitor, the movie will play 37ms, if I set the target nit to LOWER than the meta data number, then it will kick into 42ms.
So if it reports 1000nit, and I set to target 1100, then it will drop to 37ms.. (not that you'd do this).. Only that Dunkirk and Nutcracker movie are the Exception with HDR meta at values lower than my TV's target nit.

It absolutely does make a difference, try it for yourself
If you set the hdr target nit to above the metadata nit, the render time decreases.
That explains the anomaly i experienced with dunkirk and nutcracker, because they have meta data at nits below my target nit..
Using ngu medium, my system will not run smooth with 4K HDR files.
His laptop from post 55125 says 1060 max-q which is more/less the slowest 1060 variant.
It looks like he's outputting 10bit 24hz though, so that makes sense that he could get 33ms on ngu medium.
Mine is 60 hz, I don't know if my tv supports 24hz on pc input.
but with 60hz output 8bit, with NGU medium, that pushes my render time to 42ms average , unplayable.
I guess this can be rescued with custom res.
We gotta be careful comparing render times, because the minor differences in setting make a huge difference in render time.

At least you now understand the issue. :) It's very much dependent on content and how much madvr has to do for tone mapping. Some things will play fine with ngu medium. Others will not. It's right at the edge so any little hiccup pushes it into the dropped frame rendering time zone. I tend to use measurement files which helps performance. But it goes back to personal preference and prioritizing certain things to maximize the performance and quality. With this card, there are trade-offs. With a slightly faster card, you'd have a bit more rendering time to play with. Believe me, I've spent months playing with those builds and optimizing it for my C8. I didn't happen upon my settings by accident. :)

Something must be unique in his setup.
How is his render time 10ms faster than the fastest desktop variant. Unless I'm CPU bound.. which idk, could be.
I get 42ms average. I just tested on 23.98hz screen refresh as well, seems that makes no difference to render time.
His Laptop is MAGIC.

Maybe he actually has a different GPU in there? Seems strange. Most people using projectors are constantly tone mapping, so the amount of tone mapping involved wouldn’t account for the difference.

I'm running mine at 23, as well, and no it doesn't matter. I can tell you I have the slowest CPU on my HTPC. I'm still rocking a 3770k for now. I don't think that matters too much to this equation. The reason I've chosen the settings I have is because I still wanted NGU for Chroma. Call me stubborn. :)

Because I don't see how it's possible that with a 500mhz less on core-speed and ~50 watts lower difference, he could render 10ms faster ..
Something is very odd here.
But it really could be cpu, at least for me, because I'm using a g3258 @ 4.7ghz on this htpc, It doesn't peak only ~50-75% cpu utilization, but it does have lower cache i believe.

That post puzzles me immensely. Because it LOOKS like some kind of upscaling is going on if you look at his OSD. Luma is being upscaled as NGU sharp HIGH. That wouldn't be happening with a native 4k HDR image. He doesn't have showrenderingsteps enabled so it's hard to tell what it's doing. Plus he's doing full on tone mapping with that setup, using a target of 100 with dynamic tone mapping enabled. Quite frankly, that whole post confuses me.

he's not outputing in hdr though, he's doing rgb 8 bit. 10bit madvr setting.
I tried that too, doesn't change render times for me.
What is this Godlvl madvr user doing... hahahaha

I don't think so because not outputting in HDR means you're doing tone mapping much more frequently. With a target of 100 nits anything over that would be tone mapped, thus triggering all the performance hits. With my 700 target nits I have a pretty large range and quite a few movies have the majority of their frames below it, so no tone mapping. It's only when it goes above that target that tone mapping is taking place. Of course with dynamic tone mapping it's measuring in real time so that's a pretty big hit. So quite frankly, I can't explain his post at all.

That post puzzles me immensely. Because it LOOKS like some kind of upscaling is going on if you look at his OSD. Luma is being upscaled as NGU sharp HIGH. That wouldn't be happening with a native 4k HDR image. He doesn't have showrenderingsteps enabled so it's hard to tell what it's doing. Plus he's doing full on tone mapping with that setup, using a target of 100 with dynamic tone mapping enabled. Quite frankly, that whole post confuses me.
Yea with ur faster CPU, and if you're getting similar render time as I am , that means CPU doesn't make a difference in this case.
Unless he's not using a 1060, he may have a 1070. hahahaha.
Also SamuriHL, what are your render times with ngu Medium, w/ live dynamic tone mapping.

Good question. I've not tried that lately. It'll have to wait as I just kicked off a measurement run to measure some of my new movies. That'll take an hour or so to finish. Once that's done I can take a look. My ideal settings would be:
NGU AA med
error diffusion 2, use color checked
no trade performance options
That's how I'd like to run madvr for my personal taste.

Right now, on Live tonemap
I can enable all of the above setting with the exception of NGU- Medium. I have to use NGU- Low on chroma.
Overall, though, I made an image comparison yesterday, of NGU low chroma vs NGU Very High chroma,
The difference is very small. I am not be able to spot it at all by eye,
I was only able to find the difference by using Beyond Compare 4 image compare tool.

Only if you're always upscaling..
If you have 1080p to 1080p or 4k to 4k, it's not useful.
Only use it for 1080p to 4k

Here's what I think may be happening.
in SirMaster's post on AVS, He might have multiple computers.
On some of his computers, he has the Madvr lastest test build,
On his laptop with the Max Q, he has the public release version of 92.17.
He thinks they're the same, But they're not.. the latest test build version is way slower.
AND SO, he posted the screen-shot from his laptop, thinking that they're representative of his other pc settings.
That or he has sacrificed goats to some demon for a 1060 maxq which outperforms desktop 1060s by 30%+ using 50% less electricity.
