ignore it it's should be YCbCr.
your console should benefit from sending RGB.
how your shields work internal i have no clue.

dunno wtf happened now I can't even get AMD HDR working it never works 10bit and I tried to reinstall MadVr, but it doesn't seem to go into HDR mode even when I use PotPlayer D3D11 and even when using OS HDR when going full screen it just going colorless... on my other windows that I used from the backup, same one as this it works perfectly fine with 0.92.7.. what the hell pff....... Also nothing I change in Madvr actually changing, I changed the bitrate to 1bit and nothing changing. let madvr decide or HDR passthrough, nothing actually work. Anyone knows why???!

Argg Removing the Madshi registry fixed it.

When can madshi fix the Windows 11 10bit issue in full screen? It stays 8bit randomly and Restarting explorer.exe or sign-off sign-in fixes it.

yeah the explorer in win 11.
there was a dev build out there the explorer crashed when you right click the start menu.

the current dev build is cool to well maybe AMDs fault this time.
because the AMD driver 22.3.2 likes to crash thanks to a time out(the usually) and the explorer dies with it.

Maybe try AMD's "radeon pro" version driver? I had to use it cause Adrenalin version constantly crashing after display mode change.

I need to use the gaming drivers for games. Movies are just something I can fix with the restart explorer.exe but do anyone with Nvidia have the issue??? I can't figure out what happens that I lose the 10bit full screen, on my other windows install it works perfect, but it's so random that I don't know if it's about time or something that I run.

Is there a way in madVR to tone map using pixel shaders but still send the hdr flag to my JVC projector? I need to do this so my projector automatically engages HDR mode (which I actually map on the projector to my custom user mode) that I’m using for HDR that just engages my filter for wide color gamut and a few other adjustments from SDR like fully open iris etc…

I think you have to make sure "output video in HDR format" is checked in its options.

When I do that, madVR tonemaps but also sends the signal in HDR format and expects the projector to tonemap over that. That's not what I'm after. What I would like to do is the equivalent of letting madVR tonemap to SDR but still send the HDR metadata flag to the projector to engage the HDR mode (in this case I just map the projectors 'HDR' mode to a custom user mode with specific settings of wide gamut filter, open iris etc...). Currently I can do this by changing user modes on the projector once I start a movie that madVR tonemaps to SDR. However, I was hoping to have the user mode change automatically on the projector when a movie starts.

@huhn can you try to delete the folder

C:\Users\X7007\AppData\Local\AMD\CN

I always had the AMD Control panel like closing without notification and not even event viewer error, just closing. I remember that deleting the CN folder fixed, there might be a file you can't delete, but I think that's the only difference between the two OS I had installed, in one I think it didn't close/crashed and this one it did, I think we need to delete the CN every once in a while. I will keep checking if that fixed it.

For now, it works fine, every time I just opened chrome it would stop working, or maybe just by opening the Radeon control panel, it does something behind the scenes.

EDIT : 10bit still works fine all day long and the AMD control panel didn't closed suddenly . it's something with the AMD crashing or closing

I think MadVR's "send HDR metadata" checkbox sends through information like the luminance level of the HDR content when the video card is outputting HDR. By the sounds of it this is not related to what you what you are trying to achieve.

It sounds like you want to downscale HDR to SDR and trick your projector into thinking it's HDR. The closest thing I can imagine to this would be downscaling to SDR and tonemapping it inside the lower range of the HDR signal. In this case it should appear visually identical to SDR though and you'll have lost all the dynamic range of HDR. I think the settings for this would be "tone map HDR using pixel shaders" and tick "output video in HDR format".

I need to use the gaming drivers for games.

So do I and there doesn't appear to be any significant gaming feature limitation of the pro version driver that I can tell apart from the driver being an older more stable version that probably doesn't have some of the newer per-game performance optimisations.

read my last reply. I fixed it, it's something with the AMD Control panel crashing without event in the event viewer and deleting the CN folder fix both issues.

why would an older driver be more stable?
it's not like they fix older drivers they just release new ones.

either microsoft or amd managed to change a driver crash from an error to a warning so you have to look for warnings now.

you have to chill down a bit.
i just installed an older windows version and AMD driver as usual it will not crash for me again anytime soon.

even when the driver crashes it will most of the time not take the explorer with it and even if it would do that it will not change the up time.

the issue with AMD is that this happens over and over again TDR in the known issue in drivers is literally a feature at this point. this is not acceptable. nvidia absolutely dropped the ball with the 3080 release where a PSU that follows the spec will shut down because the GPU creates situations that should never happen and the better the PSU the more likely it will shutdown the system to "save" it. this was unacceptable but here is the difference it was fixed in weeks and didn't come back.

the AMD driver crash so often they acknowledge it more than one time and you still have to do with user that just say it doesn't happen to me.
this known issue is like 2 or more years old now.
Enhanced Sync may cause a black screen to occur when enabled on some games and system configurations. Any users who may be experiencing issues with Enhanced Sync enabled should disable it as a temporary workaround.

Maybe it's like beta vs stable builds or something, I don't really know. It's targeted at enterprise so I guess it needs to be more stable for businesses who can't afford to have it crashing on them all the time.

I am currently experimenting with custom resolutions on an Intel iGPU. I know it is hard, so I don't bother with the advanced panel, just the basic one where the driver selects the modeline timings.

Because I am curious, I tried 48 and 50 with all 3 timing standards. GTF, CVT and CVT-RB on my monitor and looked at MadVR to see how it would be reported, whether frame drop or frame repeat in time interval. I was surprised to see that GTF for 48 & 50 will push it into frame repeat (more desirable I understand) while CVT & CVT-RB will push it into frame drop territory on my system.

My monitor is not a standard resolution (2048x1152) so I have been using scaling for a long time to fill the screen. However, it also supports 1080p as a resolution, and I tried that as well even though it will have blackbars around the video frame. I was surprised to discover that with a 25 fps video in 50 Hz GTF mode but at the resolution of 1080p instead of native, it will list a frame repeat time on the order of days but basically it looks the same as one that might say 1 minute or 40 minutes or even 20 seconds.

Curiously, I am able to set 2048x1152@72 using CVT-RB, but this is not ideal. Even though MadVR reports the display and composition rate are both at 72, I am seeing tearing and stuttering.. so something doesn't like it. I wonder what the issue is, one would think using 72 would be better than 48 but this is not so.

Generally, at native resolution is this test a good one to use MadVR to see which timing standard might be more "optimal" for a resolution?

Why do people with other GPUs spend a lot of time with powerstrip, CRU, etc, to make it as perfect as possible if it isn't really visible? Is it visible to them or is this shaving hairs?

Update: Wow.. after 12 years, I have discovered that my monitor actually can do 23.976, 24 and 25 Hz.. if I set the resolution to 1080p instead of native.. but it doesn't seem to be blurry when I do that.. because the controls are set for 1:1 to not scale to fit in the monitor menu.
So now the string looks like: 1080p23, 1080p24, 1080p25, 1080p50, 1080p59, 1080p60, 2048x1152p48, 2048x1152p50, 2048x1152p60

I don't know that there is a benefit to changing the resolution to 1080p25 instead of 2048x1152p50. Why do people use 23-25 instead of 48-50?

the reason to use 23/25 instead of 48/50 is motion interpolation.
i used 120 btw.

the reasons you have issues with 72 should be that your device can't handle it and is simply tearing dropping frames in the device it self. test ufo has test for this.

ignore timing standards use what ever gives you the lowest frame drop/repeat which can be vastly different between maschines.

the reason to use 23/25 instead of 48/50 is motion interpolation.

All things being equal, if the source material is a true 24fps or 25fps, then wouldn't there be no motion interpolation at all? I.e. it would just play each frame twice instead of just once?

yes so the end device could do it.
if you send it 120 it can't do it.

So it turns out neither CRU or MadVR can apply my target refresh rate for 0 frame skips, but for whatever reason NVCP can.

Finally got to the bottom of this one & I can now use CRU to achieve the same mode as NVCP's custom resolution tool.

It seems my TV's EDID only contains a 1080p 24.000hz mode, and only defines this as "CTA spec VIC 32 mode". The actual timings of it aren't defined anywhere in the EDID, but they are published on page 26 of this document (https://web.archive.org/web/20171130183104/https://standards.cta.tech/kwspub/published_docs/CTA-861-G_FINAL_revised_2017.pdf).

On top of this, CTA doesn't explicitly define the 23.976hz mode timings either, it just says to use 24.000hz timings and reduce the pixel clock until you get 23.976hz (page 28 #3).

So it appears the Nvidia driver has the job of mathematically deriving the 23.976hz mode from the CTA 24.000hz mode by reducing the pixel clock. From what I can tell, Nvidia appears to be doing this correctly and it results in 23.977hz which equals 1 frame repeat every 16 minutes.

Pixel clock , resulting refresh rate
74.25Mhz , 24.000hz
74.18Mhz , 23.977hz
74.17Mhz , 23.974hz

It appears 23.977hz is the closest you can get to 23.976hz with 2 decimal places of pixel clock precision.

Now for the reason why the Nvidia driver ignores my custom 23.976hz mode in CRU: probably because it already sees the 24.000hz mode in the EDID and knows it can derive 23.976hz from it and uses that instead. So the solution was to simply delete the 24.000hz mode in the EDID's CTA extension block, then it obeys my custom 23.976hz mode.

However I have a new problem where Windows cannot differentiate between 23hz and 24hz. Both options do appear in Windows display settings, however both result in the same actual mode. Does anyone know a workaround? For now I have to output 24.000fps movies as 60.000hz as I have no better option.

On another note, saw this reg key which NVCP uses to store its custom resolutions
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}\000x

If you open it in a hex editor like HxD with data inspector you can see some of the timing parameters and also I tried changing 0x18 (24) to 0x17 (23) to try and make it appear in NVCP as 23hz but didn't work.

edit: btw if you want to know your display's VIC timing numbers since CRU doesn't show it, you can export the EDID with CRU to a .txt file and paste it into www.edidreader.com.

However I have a new problem where Windows cannot differentiate between 23hz and 24hz. Both options do appear in Windows display settings, however both result in the same actual mode.

Solved! It seems CTA timings are the problem. Solution was to add all custom resolutions to a new non-CTA extension block (I used displayID 1.3) and now it's all working perfectly.

NVCP doesn't show my custom modes cause it's only reading the CTA extension block but who cares, they are all visible in Windows display settings and to MadVR.

The [framerate=] tag seems like it might theoretically be able to solve the "1 frame drop every..." problem as well.

eg. if I tag a 25.000fps video with [framerate=24][refreshrate=24] I get 1 dropped frame per second.

So why not do the same thing just with smaller values?

edit: after more testing it seems the [framerate=] tag doesn't actually change anything in terms of rendered frame rate. So it was only the change in refresh rate which created the 1 dropped frame per second. Nevermind.

Even though MadVR reports the display and composition rate are both at 72, I am seeing tearing and stuttering.. so something doesn't like it. I wonder what the issue is, one would think using 72 would be better than 48 but this is not so.

Try rebooting to clear out any possible driver bug after setting a new display mode in the control panel, and try full screen exclusive mode. 24fps video @ 72hz should be smooth, obviously.

Assuming it really is 72hz... my TV will accept and display a 75hz or 85hz signal but its internal refresh rate is still 60hz so it results in constant judder.

But you shouldn't have tearing, maybe try enabling vsync in the 3D settings of the GPU control panel. The only way I can induce tearing is in full screen exclusive mode with desktop composition disabled and then opening the right click menu. But vsync is reinstated as soon as I close that menu at which time exclusive mode reinstates itself.

Why do people with other GPUs spend a lot of time with powerstrip, CRU, etc, to make it as perfect as possible if it isn't really visible? Is it visible to them or is this shaving hairs?

To me a dropped frame is visible, moreso at 24hz as that is a 41ms pause which is quite long. The most often I could tolerate it is every 30 minutes maybe. My goal is to at least be able to play a 3 hour movie without any dropped frames. This actually requires more than 3 hours since that time doesn't necessarily start the moment you hit play. i.e the first dropped frame could be after only 30 minutes, and then the next one at 3 hours 30 minutes.

On the other hand, movies have lots of scenes with little motion where the chances of noticing a dropped frame are low. An action movie might be a different story.

In any case, I just want the same quality motion that I would get from a Bluray or DVD player -- is that so much to ask? Broadcast TV doesn't have these frame drops either. Youtube on the other hand is full of dropped frames so if you're used to that you probably won't be bothered by the odd dropped frame. I watch Youtube at 59.940hz using Firefox not because I like Firefox but because out of all the browsers I tried it drops very little frames on my 2 systems, and most YouTube content seems to be /1.001.

edit: try this scrolling pattern and set the fps to 1 less than your monitor's hz.

Is it not possible to tag a file/folder with a custom aspect ratio?

MadVR's tips.txt doesn't mention any tags relating to aspect ratio, and its settings dialog has nothing relating to aspect ratio apart from black bar removal under the "processing > zoom control" group.

I have some files with incorrect aspect, eg 1.36:1 instead of 1.33:1.

Ctrl+J reports "720x480 1.36:1" which I presume it's getting from the video decoder. I want to override this because it's wrong and should be 1.33:1. I can do this by setting the aspect to 4:3 in MPC-HC, but it's a pain to have to do this manually every time. I need some way to automate this.

btw I tried toggling the "use stream aspect ratio" in LAV Video Decoder without effect.

edit: saw that MPC-HC supports opening .avs Avisynth files so I tried

AVISource("C:\myfile.mkv")
LanczosResize(704, 480)

But get error message "couldn't open the file".

Then I found if I set my display to a "digital projector" in MadVR settings, it unlocks an aspect ratio control called anamorphic lens stretch factor, and that appears to be working.

So in this case it seems the encoder of the video file erroneously scaled 704x480 to 720x480 without adjusting the DAR or PAR, and the solution was an anamorphic stretch factor of (720/704) / 1, or 1.0227 / 1.

huhn
9th April 2022, 12:34
720x480 is one of the original dvd resolution.
the pixel count is not important for the correct AR just that the file has the other flags correctly. so it matter if the par was changed or not or the DAR. what so ever you should known the encode.

if the corners are just cropped (they are not rarely just black bars) this could be correct.

flossy_cake
9th April 2022, 12:54
720x480 is one of the original dvd resolution.

In this case season 1-3 of this series are 704x480 DAR 1.33:1, season 4 is 720x480 DAR 1.36:1.

And season 4 looks slightly horizontally stetched to my eyes -- symmetrical shapes like circles appear slightly wider, faces are just slightly fat. Subtle, but highly annoying.

The precise aspect ratio of 480i and 480p video signals seem to be a bit vaguely standardised, but there is a convention I've observed in practice where:

Resolution, PAR, SAR, DAR
480i, 0.91:1, 704/480, 1.33:1
480p, 0.89:1, 720/480, 1.33:1

In the digital realm it shouldn't matter as like you said there are flags to tell the device what DAR to scale it to. Looks like these flags got incorrectly set somewhere.

flossy_cake
9th April 2022, 13:07
LAV Video Decoder says the aspect is 1.36:1 which MadVR seems to be obeying by default, but the MediaInfo plugin says it's 1.33:1.

Maybe LAV is right as it has these headers explicitly defining 1.36:1:

VIDEOINFOHEADER2:
dwPictAspectRatioX: 109
dwPictAspectRatioY: 80

But MediaInfo author is pretty smart and probably knows how to get these headers too, so in the end I'm not sure who is right or wrong.

All I can say is it looks stretched to my eyes, so MediaInfo is probably correct. edit: clip (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Nq8fDM8Nrwjhibhhv97RvUxbr0en9-au/view?usp=sharing).

edit: note regarding the srcAR variable: MadVR requires a precise value for it to work, eg. this doesn't work:

if (srcWidth = 720) and (srcHeight = 480) and (srcAR = 1.36)
"aspect 1.36 to 1.33"

but "1.3625" or "109:80" does.

flossy_cake: I raised this recently in a player thread. Some series that are encoded at 1920x800 are being played back at an aspect ratio that is slightly off, where circles look wider than tall, etc. and manually changing the aspect ratio makes it a little better. The response was that this is an issue with whoever did the encoding. So, I agree with that. It's not a madvr renderer issue, but either the decoder, the encoder or the player.

I've already deleted them so I can't test this second, but why don't you try testing with a different decoder/renderer/player chain on those files of yours with the Microsoft Film&TV/Movies&TV app? Also VLC which is another independent playback chain. If the issue is still there with both, then you have your answer that it's the encoder.

I was reading about this recently and playing around. I am able to see differences between them, but an important consideration for those on on older systems and most laptops with igpus is that the higher settings are not worth using because if it makes your fans spin up creating a loud whine, then it's not worth using. Bicubic 60 AR is basically the sweet spot setting for that category of machines. The noise and power tradeoffs of the better algorithms aren't worth it on my older machine, so I just use DXVA2 scaling. That said, people seemed to like NGU AA Medium for scaling in recent years and I agree it looks decent.

Yeah NGU AA, NGU standard or NGU sharp are your best options, the quality options barely affect the output so I wouldn't recommend Very high quality and probably not high quality either for most setups.
Surprisingly NGU Sharp is the most accurate but if you find things a bit too punchy use one of the other two.

my comments: super xbr looks like it is just the same as NGU AA in this test while been far cheaper.
NGU sharp looks quite aliased and also fuzzily the lines are not strength and when compared to reconstruct sharp it shows how to get the image that sharp without that issue. the source is quite aliased for chroma so that maybe the reason why both are quite aliased but "correct" in this case.
superres bilinear 4 is failing in this test it adds an dot over the first a there is some hints of chroma there but only it amp it to eleven.

reconstruct sharp is the winner for me in this test. if you can't stand the aliasing the biliteral results are also very promising on this single test.

I always have to tweak g-sync and any frame rate limiting / background frame rate limiting options in my NVidia control panel, otherwise I get similar strange issues which initially look like a performance problem. Worth checking in case you have any settings like that set in your graphics cards control panel. If it turns out to be the case, you can do a per application configuration for mpc-hc and make sure it doesn't use g-sync / frame rate limiting etc.

Hi, has anyone else tried a Nvidia shield pro yet with AI upscaling, i'm seeing some rather great results so far, I bought one to use as a secondary player for the bedroom. Its 720p and 1080p upscaling to 4k is far superior to MADVR imho, it struggles a little with 480p DVD rips though if they are really low res but I still prefer the results to MADVR.

I'd probably switch to this on my main player but I prefer using my HTPC, would love to see something like this come to windows.

the shield scaler is a scaler that applies line sharpening so sharper parts of an image that are already sharp. if you like that try adaptive sharpen. to be fair it looks hilarious in motion at best. while they use the word AI it has nothing todo with AI it's just neural networks just as nnedi3 or older/newer scaler.
