That happens because of a bug in XySubFilter.
There is no benefit in using XySubFilter except for a few idiotically complex Anime fansubs where is renders a bit faster. If you want something that just works reliably, stick with ISR.
oh and try the ISR on UHD even not that complicated subtitles make you problems.
the biggest problem of the ISR is that it doesn't use the "new" subtitle interface. ISR is not correct by a 3D LUT for example. well it can read the colorspace flags of ASS files and use them but it doesn't know the output colorspace.
it would be nice if we could just forget the XY vsfilter/XY subfilter and move on to a bug fixed xy version, a ISR that can do the same or something new like libassmod but we are not that far yet.
I play mostly 720p and 1080p content on 1080p screen with external and internal subtitles in various formats, mostly .srt and .ssa.
This is most likely a known bug with external .srt files and italic text (if I remember correctly). Shouldn't happen with all subtitles.
It appears to be that. Ive tested it removing all italic and special stuff from a .srt subtitle and it appeared to solve the problem. Anyway. Its not worthy doing that every time i watch something. So i will use MPC-HC ISR until @huhn`s idea sees the greenlight.
Thanks for the answers

Everyone here running AMD 460/470/480 cards, how are you getting MadVR to work with 4k HDR videos?
It's just black for me. I've updated to the latest version of MadVR, and it's still not working.
Thanks!

That's a different problem. It has to do with the combination of 10 bit HEVC,dxva2(native) and Madvr. If you mean this just don't put dxva2(native) in LAV filters.

madshi usually keeps quite about possible future features. However it seems unlikely anytime soon because it is so hard to do "correctly", there are always errors. Never say never though. :)
There have been rumors about possible VapourSynth integration which would allow 3D party versions similar to SVP.

Thats a joke right? Madvr Smooth motion already does it and better with less cpu usage even thought i dont use it because i dislike it. Soap opera and blur doesnt suits me.
I once experimented those "payable" options like Splash and JRiver to discover all of them are utterly a piece of crap claiming to be great in whatever they think they are. I experimented and disliked it. There are similar options available for free and sometimes even better if not all the time.

SVP integration with madVR (through planned avisynth interface) looks more realistic. However, if madshi will suddenly create GPU-based frame interpolation without typical MVTools/SVP artifacts, it would be fantastic.

My CPU usage is maybe 1% to 4% with a laptop Intel i3 (2011) with Motion2, but GPU usage is similar (less than 1%) to madVR Smooth Motion, I use bilinear everywhere to compare with Splash.
Soap opera effect is less annoying than blur produces by Smooth Motion for me. I think it's like sharpen, some people like it other don't.
I just wanted to know if madshi was/is working on this and what's his opinion.
Maybe a ngu logic could fix soap opera effect or reduces artefacts produced by this kind of algo.

For me. Any 23,976 movie with Smooth motion turned on to 60HZ will end up feeling soap opera to me. Never used the russian SVP. Tested Splash Motion 2 and it`s not accurate in the maximum. If i put it half motion looks better. Still the soap opera look is disgusting.
Probably this is because my TV or my nvidia GPU already does what madvr smooth motion does. Doing it twice maybe isnt worth it and probably the cause of sopa opera effect. I will test madvr smooth motion without nvidia inverse telecine and any kind of TV movie mode turned on.

You can`t compare Splash Motion with madvr Smooth motion because its not the same thing. Splash Motion is nothing more than the russian SVP done by your gou but not really accurate. madvr smooth motion is like nvidia inverse telecine from what i can tell.

Smooth Motion on its own cannot result in a soap opera effect. It's frame blending, not frame interpolation. The worst it can do is make the picture look a bit blurry during motion. Either what you're seeing is not caused by Smooth Motion, or you are mistaken as to what is meant by "soap opera effect".

if you run madVR smooth motion and the soap opera effect creating stuff in your TV at the same time the result is most likely terrible. but smooth motion is not the reason for the soup opera effect. it is technical not able to do stuff like this.
smooth motion has one simple aim judder free playback like playing a file at it native refresh rate.
so with a 23p source it is trying to give you the same smoothness at 60 hz as with 23 hz.

what has nvidia deinterlancing to do with? inverse telecine is just an option for deinterlancing. i'm not even sure if it does anything anymore and if it isn't always used. i mean you need an interlanced source in the first place.

Guys I am confused and I need an opinion. After trying madvr's new option I can finally activate 23hz and results seem good(1 frame drop every 1 hour) but I lose 4:4:4.
What do you think it's the best choice?4:2:2 with 23hz and supposedly smoother motion or 60hz with smooth motion on and 4:4:4?
why don't you use 23p with 4:4:4 and can your TV do 23p properly?

OK I kinda had HDR working with FSE and no need to click on icons etc and it would stay outputting correctly even if I click on the player window. But now it is stuck in HDR output even though HDR mode in Win10 is switched off. I have to disable FSE to get back to normal SDR (Otherwise SDR content is sent as HDR). It's all a bit strange how one moment it's working. The next it's not and then it gets stuck in HDR mode.
EDIT: I can only get out of stuck HDR 4K output on SDR content by either disabling FSE or rebooting.
Can someone please explain.
I have a ripped version of the BD Oklahoma which is 1080 29.970 frame rate.
As it states Scan type, store method = Interleaved fields in the properties, this does mean its a 29.970 interlaced BD is that correct?

Setting up a new JVC 7500 PJ and I'm having some issues with 3D. madVR OSD is showing a 3D rendering path but it shows it is scaling from 1920x1080 --> 5720 x 3240 and it is (of course) dropping frames all over the place.
Any suggestions?
Thanks

FYI - it turns out Uninstalling / Reinstall the nVidia drivers seems to have fixed this scaling issue and 3D now works (using RGB 8-Bit without the weird purple push).

You should be aware that before this option was introduced, it was enabled by default in previous madVR versions. So if anything disabling that option would be *new* behavior, because before it was always enabled.

nvidia has usual worse results but you will still drop drop frame when watching a movie and that's means it not perfect.
but the biggest problem is the TV industry and the fact that most screen can't do 23/24p properly what so ever.
so the real problem is if a TV can do it you want to use the motion interpolation of the TV and if you care.
a surprising high number of TVs user don't see the huge difference between proper 23p and 3:2 judder anyway.

From what I understand I frame drop every 1 hour means smooth playback and every 1 hour there's a small ''jerk'' if you ever see it.Doesn't look bad to me.Or it affects general smoothness while the movie plays?
The thing is that I lose 4:4:4 and I don't know if it's a placebo but I think that I see some image quality degradation with 4:2:2.
Picture seems a bit sharper but a bit more 'dull''.
should "only" be a hiccup every 1 H. with a 23p source at 24 hz it's a hiccup about every 42 secs.
the sharpness difference can easily come from leaving PC mode so the TV is now again doing all kind of stuff to the image.
the first thing you should do is check if the TV is able to do 23/24p in the first place.
so either your eyes don't care or your TV can do it correct. so just do what you want.

Probably because you have kept the tv settings untouche. If they were fine for 4:4:4 they might be wrong for 4:2:2. But you get the best accurate color with 4:2:2. Not only best color but the playback will be accurate. When you change the color output so many times the colors will affect movie playback no matter what algorithm method you use on madVR. For instance. if u choose RGB Full in nvidia settings u will never get the accurate playback u aim.

not sure how you came up with this but madVR output is RGB the "nvidia" settings have nothing to do with that.
everything that is not fullrange RGB in the "nvidia settings" will convert the image. so full range RGB is closest to untouched and can be untouched.
next is the TV. this depends a lot on the TV but for most accurate result calibrated PC mode 4:4:4 is usually the best it doesn't downscale the image and disables most post processing.

I see the logic to it because when 4:4:4 gets disabled picture mode changes too.I try to keep any filters off and try to reproduce same settings as with 4:4:4 because I have an icc profile.Anyway, problem seems to get complicated and the easiest thing is 60hz with SM.Thanks for the tips.

Maybe a longshot! I'm enjoying MadVR since day one and it gets better for every revision :)
Is there a way to modify any file in Kodi to report back "actual aspect ratio" from MadVR?
Today I have a plugin (Control4 Driver) that make API calls to Kodi VideoPlayer.VideoAspect and ListItem.VideoAspect.
I think the problem reside in Kodi not getting the info from MadVR. And most files I've tried have hard encoded blackbars hence 1.78 is reported. Maybe a trivial problem for most. But I still seek the answer. :)

That depends on which edition of Windows 10 one uses... 24/60Hz is best for those with modern NVidia cards and fully updated Win10 RS2, while those on Win10 RS1 get the best results with 23Hz setting. There is no way to make one act like the other because MS significantly changed the way FSE Mode works, regardless of Compatibility settings selected for .EXE or Xbox-related settings or Game-Mode settings. I think its a part of WDDM 2.2. You can read more about it here - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Display_Driver_Model . Its why RS2 users have to select between Windows and NVidia settings, while RS1 users have only the NVidia settings.
For those who want the best experience with madVR - stick to RS1 (Anniversary Update). Its hassle free - no frame issues what-so-ever for hours and hours of playback with ReClock, madVR, LAV, and MPC-HC.

I've honestly read more people that say it works fine for them then those that complain - which was mostly you. Should probably not project your issues onto everyone else. Creators Update runs just fine for me with madVR. :)
You should just disable game mode and the game bar if you don't want them and think they intefer - if your alternative is to not use CU anyway, you also don't lose out on anything you wouldn't have anyway (not to mention that game mode is largely irrelevant anyway).

Can someone provide simple instructions on Window Settings and MadVR settings to get HDR to work.
I have a GTX 1080 TI, Windows 1703 and and HDR TV (samsung KS8500),
1. I can get Windows to display HDR if I select the silder to HDR, but then it is aloways in HDR mode no matter what I do, and everything looks like trash.
2. I can disable HDR in Windows, and then use mdavr, using DX11 Playback. I have passthrough HDR Content to the Display selected.
2a. Nvidia's private API
2b. Windows 10 API
In both cases playing back of an HDR video such as "LG_Chess_HDR.mp4" or "Sony_4K_HDR_Camp.mp4", does not switch to HDR mode, according to the TV. The splitter is LAV and the decoder is LAV, so I do not see why madvr is not sending HDR10 data.
I also have an HD Intergral inline so I can monitor what is happing and the Intergal in both cases shows I'm not passing any HDR10 data, so the TV seems correct.
What am I doing wrong?

I am having so much fun with HDR. It keeps getting stuck in that mode even though I turned it off in Win10. So SDR gets incorrectly tone mapped. If I switch from 10bit to 8bit in MadVR settings I can get it back. Either that are rebooting fixes it. But then I have to mess about getting HDR working again as it does not like switching to HDR without clicking on MadVR's system track icon, leaving it for a few seconds then clicking away. I hope this is fixable and not something Win10 or the driver is doing.

Using newest madvr 0.91.10 causing Potplayer to close really slow and start really slow, I can't click on movie instantly after closing potplayer, I can see potplayer going from 100+ mb of ram to 35mb and then close which takes about 4-5 sec, within this time it doesn't open another movie or the same movie cause I limited it to 1 instance of player. without using Madvr , just any other renderer , potplayer closes fast and opens fast. 0.91.9 worked properly without an issue.
EDIT : Nvm , it still happens with 0.91.9 , I figure it's the new update, he changed something for people who have crashes , might kind of timeout which doesn't close it instant. with version 1.7.1916 it works like it should. Still for some unkonwn reason, potplayer opens when the internet is disabled ! , can anyone figure out why !? it opens the movie instant without internet ( network adapter disabled ) compare to with internet takes like 2-3 sec saying it's opening ...

Which is the better alternative: 60hz with smooth motion or custom refresh rate 72hz with reclock? To playback what sort of source material? 72Hz is good for 24fps material. 71.928Hz is good for 23.976fps material.
Depending on your screen, you might be better off implementing a custom resolution for 23.976Hz, because the screen might already be working "behind scenes" to multiply it in order to reduce flicker.
