1) This is not a repeater, it's a ACTIVE adapter. Club 3D does say they add HDCP 2.2 support, and AMD is said to support these with Crimson.
It is an adapter (which is a general term used to tell you that is adapts something) that (for HDCP purposes) acts as a HDCP repeater (which technically is a function that only repeats what is already supported), you can even read that on Club3D's own site (look at the tech specs of the adapter (http://www.club-3d.com/isotope/c/cac-1070_en-8ccc0795.pdf)).
There is no secret sauce involved here. I just wanted to correct that HDCP 2.2 does not magically get added onto AMD products, which don't already support HDCP 2.2 natively within their display engine, which they currently do not.
The Club3D solution is an active adapter that converts, and it's also a repeater to mirror HDCP functionality, which is already included on the source device.
2) HDCP 2.2 is the least of our worries, first because there is no content using it from a PC, and second because the lack of it is already addressed by the HD Fury Integral and other HDMI tools. Frankly, I'm interested in getting 18Gb/s bandwidth than getting HDCP 2.2, which I don't care about one bit.
AMD will introduce it soon, but not on current HW.
Again, I just wanted to correct you here, so that no one thinks they can buy the adapter and magically have HDCP 2.2, when there is no support on the source device, which is the case with current display engine(s) on AMD's HW. There is a lot of miscommunication on the net about this, which is unfortunate (because most media don't understand it).

I found a strange behavior/bug by using the new Radeon Crimson driver. I updated recently the rest of the video software (madVR, LAV filters, MPC HC nightly) so the driver is not certainly the culprit.

affected rendering modes: fullscreen modes (both windowed and exlusive), no problem while NOT rendering fullscreen
behavior: all 4 queues + rendering and presenting times jumping wildly, queues partially running empty so dropped frames, decoder queue showing 20-25/24 ;)
"remedy": deactivating smoothmotion and/or checking "use 10bit image buffer instead of 16bit" in trade quality for performance section -> normal behavior
I made further tests in the meantime and I found a real solution for the problem (the "remedies" aren´t solutions but work):
In my case the rendering queue sizes were set too high. By reducing them from 24 in my case to a maximum of 21 eliminates the described problem (everything from 4 up to 21 seems to work fine). Up to this driver I never changed the rendering queues and always used 24 without problems. Don´t know why Crimson wants smaller queue sizes, but now it works. The number of presented frames in advance has no influence by the way.
So now I can use Crimson drivers. And the missing video settings from Catalyst (most of them were killed in Crimson drivers) can be accessed by DXVA checker or RadeonMod utility.

I have some questions:

I tried let the TV do the upscale instead of madVR by setting in devices > display modes a lower resolution, but my Samsung simply showed the lower res + refresh rate I set; I know that madVR has better quality, but how can I still let the TV do the upscale?

At least I won't be part of the misinformation stream anymore :)
Glad I sent the R9 Fury back, we'll definitely have to wait for Arctic Island for this (not that I care about HDCP 2.2 support).
This being said, the lack of HDCP 2.2 is a non-issue with an HD Fury Integral, but I accept that it's a bit of an expensive add-on solely for a GPU/PC given that there is no HDCP 2.2 protected content coming from it and there likely won't be any for a while as none of the current content (Amazon, Netflix) streams in 4K/UHD from a PC, mainly for protection reasons. I got mine mainly to be able to connect my upcoming UHD Bluray player to my existing audio/video chain.
The main feature of the Club3D adapter is the full speed 18Gb/s HDMI interface. It still makes it a very worthy add-on to current HDMI 1.4 limited GPUs while we wait for Arctic Islands.

Apologies if it's been asked before (or if it's a stupid question...). MadVR is excellent, though it can be a bit daunting to set up for someone like me with no idea what half the options mean and how they effect quality, performance and power. :-)
Having it's own player like MediaPlayer.net with options for low-high end GPU's would actually be quite handy, and eliminate the nuisance of having MadVR as a separate entity to Potplayer/MPC-HC.

Sorry, but I don't get it what do you want. Let's say you have a 1080p TV. Set it to 720p (or whatever is the closest to it), it should be fullscreen, then play a 720p content on it.

You don't need a standalone player for this, madvr could have presets itself. But: it's impossible to set a preset in madvr (except for the very low-end) since so many different GPUs are around, not even mentioning underclockers:)

Sorry, but I don't get it what do you want. Let's say you have a 1080p TV. Set it to 720p (or whatever is the closest to it), it should be fullscreen, then play a 720p content on it.
I have a 1080p TV, I set in madVR > devices > display_modes: 720p50, I play a lower resolution content -> I expect the TV to show the file in 1080p and in full screen (in this case an upscale from both madVR and the TV) but the TV is actually set to 720p.
What should I do to have the TV do the upscale (without my old laptop use any power in case the res of file is the same and not lower; i want madVR for other functions)?
I would love a Disable_Upscale/Downscale command because if I must play different files with different resolutions I should always change the values in Display_Modes to be the same of the content I'll play, provided someonw tells me how to see TV in 1080p!

currently your TV is always set to 720p50 and nothing else and the screen should doe the rest of the scaling.

The closest to this would be to use KCP, which packs MPC-HC (or MPC-BE in the Black version) with LAV and MadVR as well as xysubfilter. It has a neat installer, and sets up everything right. It even has an option for you to select "tiers" depending on your rig, so you can try them all (from low to highest) and decide which one works best for you.
The tier profiles need updating because they don't take into account NNEDI3 or the newest enhancements brought in recently by Madshi, but it's a great way to get started if you find the initial setting intimidating. Use them as a starting point and fine-tune and experiment from there.
It's also simple to update madVR if the version included in the latest KCP installer gets a bit old, you just drop the MadVR files into the KCP/MadVR folder and it's up-to-date. Same goes for LAV or MPC-BE. As long as you save your settings beforehand and restore them afterwards (another nice thing about KCP), you'll be fine.

Zoom Player will also download new versions of madVR, install, and configure it. Zoom Player does not default to using madVR but it is easy to set.

For you and anyone else interested in HDR content, I have found a website with great demo/test content:

Apart from the swipe video which shows HDR and simulated SDR content simultaneously (to be watched on an HDR display obviously), there are files with the same content in HDR and SDR, so great for true comparisons.
Look especially at the Eldorado and the Life Untouched content. You get the original Prores file, as well as MP4 files in HDR and SDR (both HEVC).
As Madshi is working on HDR support in MadVR, I thought these might be useful if he hasn't got these already.
I'm getting a JVC X7000 (HDMI 2.0a 18Gb/s with HDR10 support) and an NVidia Shield tomorrow to test all this (the Shield with its HDMI 2.0 18Gb/s doesn't support the HDR 2.0a profile yet but hopefully I'll be able to get something out of it by switching the display to HDR manually - as you do with the Sony FMP-X10 which doesn't support HDMI 2.0a either yet was used by JVC and Sony for HDR demos at IFA and Cedia - or using the HD Fury Integral). I'll also try the current build of MadVR (with the GPU both in RGB and in YCB) to see if it's able to pass HDR content or not in FSE exclusive mode. My AVR doesn't support 2.0a either, so both sources will go directly to the Integral then to the X7000. I'll have the X7000 at least for a few days.
I'll report here if anyone is interested in whether the current build of MadVR can pass-through HDR content, otherwise I won't as I don't want to clutter the thread.
Just let me know if it's appropriate or not, but as the thread is quiet at the moment hopefully it won't be frown upon.

OK, let's try it one more time :) I understand what's your goal, but you don't understand what we try to tell you :)

So, that's perfect! That's how you can test what you want, if the 720p video is fullscreen on your TV (which probably is).
Since your TV native resolution is 1080p and you feed it with 720p and since it's fullscreen -> your TV is doing the upscaling from 720p to 1080p. That's it.
Now, if you wan to ask then how can you compare 1080p upscaling: the answer is you can't.

You can't. It has to be at least chroma upscaling. What you can do is:
- 1. set the chroma upscaling to a fast (although dumb) one, e.g. bicubic 50
- 2.a. (as you suggested below) play only content (720p/1080p) that what your resolution is
- 2.b. or manually switch the resolution before you start one (I'm not sure you can do this automatically)

whats the difference in GPU (or CPU) load when watching 1080p stuff at a resolution of 1920x1200 (16:10)? is there and kind of rescaling involved or just something like the extension of the black bars at top and bottom which does not really cost much power at all?

You cannot change from D3D9 to D3D11 or vice versa or from either of them to windowed overlay, but you can switch from overlay to D3D9.
I believe everything else can be changed on the fly.

Is the option "don't rerender frames when fade in/fade out is detected" checked in the ‘rendering —> trade quality for performance’ section ? You should test it with this option checked and see if it helps.
I've checked that option but issue is still present. :(
Do I have to set up display modes that Madvr can switch to? Would that help?
So, if anyone else knows why dark/black scenes are causing a lot of dropped frames (for example Cast of characters scenes), I would appreciate help.

So, I am having this issue that for some reason, if I pause a video in windowed mode and switch to some other application and do some work and then go back to MPC-HC, as soon as I try to put the player in full screen mode, MPC-HC crashes with some strange error regarding madvr and tries to send a crash log. This is the error text:

I am not sure what language that is and why it is in such language. Regardless on this, I enabled debug mode on madvr and tried to reproduce the crash. After MPC-HC crashed again, I checked the log file and it was 6 GB, with only a few minutes of video playback. I cannot even open the file since it is so big. What should I do now?

Might have something to do with the fact that I recently added a new graphic card to my setup and now I am running crossfire; video playback was fine last night, though. I have enabled crossfire only for applications with a profile, so, it should not be enabled for MPC-HC or madvr.

I didn't expect this, but on Win7 x64 it's running smooth, 0 dropped frames, 0 presentation glitches.
I just copied whole MPC-HC folder (with madvr in it) on Win7, so everything is set up exactly the same.
I'm not sure where the issue is on WinXP (OS itself, MPC-HC, madVR, VGA driver...) but I guess it's time to move on Win7 on my HTPC. :rolleyes:

I spent the past 3-4 hours troubleshooting this issue; I am positive this is an incompatibility between madVR and AMD's crossfire; I don't think using the 32-bit version of madVR/MPC-HC will fix this. Anyway, here is the results of my findings:
- MPC-HC will crash only if I pause it, switch my active window to another application, work for a few minutes, then go back to MPC-HC, go full screen (exclusive or windowed) and resume the video. If I go back to MPC-HC quickly, it doesn't crash.
- If I disable crossfire globally, it will not crash anymore.
- If I enable crossfire globally but only for applications with a profile, it will still crash. Even if I make a profile for mpc-hc64.exe and madHcCtrl.exe and disable crossfire for both, it will still crash. Based on GPU clock and utilization, crossfire is NOT disabled regardless of what I do and both GPUs are used anyway when playing videos.
- If I disable "use Direct3D 11 for presentation" and "use a separate device for presentation", video playback will hang instead of crashing; i.e. MPC works fine but refuses to resume video playback. I can use the same MPC window to re-open the file just fine, in which case it will play properly.
- If I resume playback before going full screen, MPC will not crash but I will get a black screen while audio plays fine. Both GPUs stay at idle clocks in this case.
Needless to say, I can easily blame AMD for this problem but I highly doubt they would even care or try to resolve this issue, no matter how many times I report it.
Any feedback from other people with Crossfire setups is highly appreciated.
P.S. Disabling crossfire in games seems to work correctly. I am going to report this to AMD anyway but I won't expect them to fix it any time soon, if at all.

I am using Nvidia gpu, and my mpc-hc and madvr setup crashes when I go from windowed to full screen, randomly, regardless of if I stop or play, or if I do something else, or if the video is playing or not.
I am 99% sure that Nvidia is not going to even look into the problem, as I already reported it, and Nvidia guys were pretty rough to me, not giving any help, but there are only 2 GPU makers and... I guess that they can abuse the buyers all they want, we do not have anyone else to buy from anyways. So it is more like, developers need to avoid the bugs in drivers, because they will not adjust drivers to avoid bugs:rolleyes:.
But forgiving this little fact , I am quite happy with my current setup and would not complain any further.

At this stage, I not sure Windows 10 is mature enough. I know for sure Windows 8.1 has all the drivers I need. I'll eventually move to 10 when I know all my hardware and software will work without issues.

Sorry, I tried only a file which had black borders and this showed me a video "not in fullscreen"; how unlucky!
Then I tried another file but the TV at 720p cut some borders! (in ctrl+j: Movie Resolution=704x576 and Target Rectangle=0,0,1280,720)
Weird thing is that this same file at 1080p shows in ctrl+j: Mov Res=720x576! This is weird, right?
Right now I can't control, but I'm quite sure I have "touch from inside" option, if it matters.

in case I want to play an upcoming blu-ray which has 4k 60Hz, HDR with 48fps with madVR and LAVvideo, would I need a graphic card with HDMI 2.0a to connect to my TV?
you first need to wait for a way to decrypt the disc.
but after this there is most likely a way to play these files back even on an SDR 1080p screen.
BTW. 48 hz is not part of the UBD and hdmi 2.0 spec.

At this stage, I not sure Windows 10 is mature enough. I know for sure Windows 8.1 has all the drivers I need. I'll eventually move to 10 when I know all my hardware and software will work without issues.

desktop composition is broken on windows 7/vista. it's trivial to get an composition mismatch on these operation systems which results in a lot of playback issues.
this issue is fixed with windows 8+

in my test it looks like this driver uses NN bob or something terrible like this...

Desktop composition controls screen updates (v-sync) but madVR also wants to be in control of screen updates and they conflict so you get stutter or even dropped frames.
With desktop composition off you should avoid most problems but some users have reported tearing (two different frames displayed in the same v-sync). I am not sure why tearing happens with desktop composition off, madVR should v-sync itself, but I have seen it.
It seems like Windows 7's desktop composition was designed while assuming a single monitor at 60 Hz. :p

the desktop composition is need for v sync. so with it disabled you don't have v sync so it is need for windowed mode.
the next issue on vista/7 with the desktop composition is that only one desktop composition rate can be used for all devices. so using a laptop with 60 hz only display and a TV is going to ruin your day...
than windows vista/7 have a huge issue with changing the desktop composition. for example you switch to 23p to watch a movie but the desktop composition stays at the old 60 hz for what ever reason.
this happens all the time...
this can be avoided with windows 8+ or FSE/overlay mode.
but i'm pretty sure i was able to break FSE on windows 7 too with my dual display setup. but i'm over windows 7 for a long time.
aero/desktop composition issue where the reason i sticked to crappy XP x64 for some time.

just tested it and no AMD doesn't support overlay.
crimson is just on typical new driver with an new UI that is missing a ton of settings. like deinterlace options and stuff like this.

Win 7 + Madvr = Crossfire always on but stable with no dropped frams
Win 8 + Madvr = Crossfire disabled but you have to use SXBR with no dropped frames (Best Combination)
Win 10 + Madvr = Crossfire always on Unstable, Madvr always crashes (Piece of Crap)
this was running on 2X HD7850 with Latest AMD Crimson Driver (Beta Hotfix.) All are on tested on a clean installed machine.
I suggest you stay away from Windows 10+AMD Crimson Driver combination till they sort this shit out.
Now going back to Windows 8.

I'm using classic theme so no Aero.
Also, I use FSE and I didn't check Disable Desktop Composition (I guess it doesn't matter with FSE and no Aero).
I didn't know about tearing issue, never saw it on my setup (probably because of FSE).

I would use 23 Hz, 50 Hz, and 59 Hz. Set smooth motion to "only if there would be motion judder without it..."
Or nothing and use smooth motion most of the time.
Personally I like using smooth motion and not using display modes, it avoids the flicker when changing display modes. If you notice smooth motion's blurring display mode changing is required but if you don't smooth motion is even better because it perfectly matches timings so you never get dropped or repeated frames during normal playback. When using standard refresh rates you need to use Reclock or similar or you still get drops/repeats. Or you can use custom refresh rates and tune the refresh rate to match the source frame rates almost exactly, this is somewhat complicated and requires trial and error.
Smooth motion is so easy. ;)

Now going back to Windows 8.
I am still using the non-Crimson driver v15.11.1. Crimson is still too immature for daily usage; then again so is Windows 10. I would have stuck with Windows 7 if it wasn't for DirectX 12.
I am trying to see if disabling ULPS or actually forcing Crossfire to on for MPC/madVR will fix the problem.
