You also need to be careful when you select lower resolutions in windows because video drivers may upscale the image to what it "thinks" is the best. In Nvidia this option is called "Scaling" as seen here:

(edit: The selected options in that image are not optimal for what would be ideal in your scenario)
I don't know what the AMD equivalent is.
AMD has the same settings and does the same.
with my setup it is even "worse".
when i select 4096x2160 it will stick to this resolution even when i'm switching back to 3840x2160 it is still sending 4096x2160 but with black bar luck my TV doesn't really care and 4096x2160 is just cropped but this is just dumb. i'm using a 1060.
a TV doesn't care what the madVR OSD says it doesn't matter for it. and there is no paint program that can't display that PNG. if the image looks odd on paint your display is creating the artefacts not paint. i'm pretty sure it is the doing of "fit to screen" the specs are very clear it has nothing to do with 1:1 pixel mapping or something else but it is very unlikely that paint is doing it.
but the biggest problem is that this is the madVR thread not a "how to setup my display correct help thread".

3840x2160 is 16:9
4096x2160 is 1.90:1
16:9 source is expected to have blacks bars on the side with 4096x2160 screen.

EDIT:....and if you see the whole concept of what I posted it proves that fit to screen is 1:1 pixel mapping.

Almost all the resolutions that we have tested are supported on this TV, the only exception was 1080p@120Hz, but that was to be expected for a Samsung TV. For sharper text 4:4:4 you must set the input type to 'PC'. For 4K@60Hz@4:4:4 you must enable UHD mode. This is only possible on HDMI1.

just set it to 3840x2160.
you can even change the fit to screen option now it will do nothing because everything fit already.
and run the chroma test picture in paint.

If I put screen fit to off you will see the removal of the black bar with the current source.In other sources it crops the sides and full image isn't displayed.You understand why I need fit to screen ON now?We need a universal setting,not only good for 3840x2160 source.I can give you various links that fit to screen disables scaling if you want.

You need to find the resolution and settings that make your display show 4:4:4. You need to see clearly see the text "4:4:4" to prove that your whole display chain passes 1:1 pixel mapping without chroma subsampling.

i had a RX 480 and i have other AMD cards AMD can AMD is able to do 4:4:4.
there was a bug in the past that hide the pixel format setting that's all.
and people that can't read the specs of active adapter.

I get 4:2:2 with Chroma.png and I've followed the instructions for both TV and GPU.:confused:

because the specs say it
because it is overscanning with a 4096x2160 input signal only left and right of cause.
because it is not over scanning with a input signal 3840x2160. not talking about video files
because the manual says that 3840x2160@60 hz is the recommended and optimal setting for a PC.
because fit to screen is made to move images larger than the screen on the screen. if fit to screen would mean 1:1 pixel mapping and the screen is 4096x2160 it would add black bars on a 3840x2160 input signal(not file!).
amd is reporting the wrong recommend resolution with UHD screens i can reproduce this here right now.

What changed is the name from screen fit to screen to fit.
No vanished pixel format bug,I was talking about different thing but I am not 100% sure.What I know is that ''this guy'' sees 4:4:4 with local lan and waiting for a response with HDMI.
I can't put 3840x2160 like that,with windows happens what you said earlier.It doesn't change.Radeon settings don't have anything to change resolution for some reason.I forced 3840x2160 with Madvrs display modes to check 3840x2160.

change the resolution see if the TV reports 3840x2160 if not try this.
go to display settings -> set "change size of text..." to 100%
cahnge to 3840x2160 this should force it. you can of cause change this back to what do i know 200% (1080p sized icons) after the resolution change.
and disable GPU scaling.
and yes crimson is the biggest downgrade in the history of drivers.

huhn, Ive tested 4K again tonight and confirmed that I cant get RGB @ 4K 60Hz with my GTX1080 card, all I have in the drop-down box is YCbCr, this is why my image is washed out.
I can always get RGB @ 60Hz when Im on 1080p>1080p as thats the way I always run it.
I tested 24Hz @4K and RGB appears in the drop-down box and it looks fantastic, but I want to use 60Hz @4K.
Why when you set the 1080 card to 4K @ 60Hz it doesnt allow RGB in the dropdown box, is that normal?

and check if hey are HDMI 2.0.
there are ways to work around the AVR using an iGPU for example or an displayport -> HDMI cable

someone is reporting a bug in samsung TVs:
Step 2: "UHD Color" option cycling.
Once you have the latest drivers installed and the display is setup correctly you need to press the menu button on the remote and navigate to the “UHD Color” setting on your TV for the input the computer is plugged into. The computer must still be on.
This setting needs to be cycled OFF, then back ON for the input the computer is connected to. Doing this requires the TV to restart each time.
Once you cycle the “UHD Color” option back ON the TV should now show the correct resolution on the TV’s "Info" button on screen display (3840×2160 / 60p). The display should also now correctly be displaying full 4:4:4 chroma subsampling as the CAC-1070 and CAC-1170 are meant to be able to do.
Keep in mind, after cycling the the UHD Color option OFF then back ON, the correct resolution may still not be displayed (and it will be putting out 4:2:2 chroma subsampling). If this is the case you will need to cycle the "UHD Color" option OFF and ON again, possibly several times until you get the desired result.
Also important to note that once you turn the TV off then go back and turn it on later the TV will have reverted to it’s previous state and you will have to jump through the “UHD Color” OFF-ON cycling hoop again to get back to your desired result.
Please be aware that any resolution changes/refreshes will kick the TV out of the correct mode (3840x2160 @60hz with 4:4:4 chroma) and it will revert back to the incorrect 4:2:2 mode with 4069x2180 displayed on the TV's "Info" button on screen display. This means any program that changes resolution in any way (for instance starting a game up) will knock the TV back into 4:2:2 mode. Then you must cycle the "UHD Color" setting again to get back to 4:4:4. When you cycle UHD Color back on it sometimes takes quite a while for windows to scale and refresh your desktop making this tedious and inconvenient.
This workaround method IS NOT a viable solution for people that will be going in and out of programs that change/refresh the resolution such as gamers as you will constantly be messing with the display to get the correct output.
i never had these problem on my panasonic.
but my RX 480 stayed at 3860x2160.
but as you can see he get's the rubbish 4096x2160 default resolution bug too.
i had a way bigger problem than this with HDMI handshake issues so i gave up after the 3rd card and got a 1060 that works perfectly.

I still really want to get RGB rather than YCbCr with 0-255 dont I, isnt it meant to be better?
The PC is direct to my Lumagen Pro (not the new 18 gbit/s card) all cables are short to the projector then to my McIntosh pre pro MX160, audio only. I now think the problem might be as I dont have the add on 18 gbit/s replacement from Lumagen, is that right?
Is there a work round without getting the card from Lumagen since I only want to upscale BDs @60Hz 4K?
The upscaling is all working correctly without dropped frames as I see that in the menu, it does look fantastic when Im on 24Hz with RGB, but I cant run this way @ 60Hz, without RGB its washed out :o

without removing the Lumagen Pro or upgrading the card there is no way for RGB@60 hz.
and yes RGB is preferred so it is technically possible to send the madVR image untouched.
if the Lumagen Pro is used for calibration think about a madVR 3D LUT.
in my book everything that touches the image created by madVR is a bad thing and is just degrading image quality.
but this is just me.

Looks like I will have to invest in another upgrade, the 18 from Lumagen.

It seems to occur for some win10 AMD users, it's a driver bug. The usual "solution" is to reduce the number of pre-presented frames to a lower number. I think 6 frames usually worked, or maybe 4, I don't recall right now.Thanks for the info. For now I downgraded my drivers to make sure it'll work this weekend: Projector, Popcorn, Action!

The primary reason is that PCs always run in RGB. Everything is RGB, Windows, your video renderer, etc. So if you output anything else, there is an extra conversion step. Your video renderer outputs RGB to the video card, and the video card then converts to YCbCr for output, so skipping that step is usually preferable.

Brightness and contrast patterns for pc (0-255) are the same as the TV patterns? Or should I use others? I use the ave hd709 patterns to adjust the brightness and contrast. Line 17 for brightness and line 234 for contrast. In PC mode should I do the same?

You set full rgb (0-255) for the whole chain and for example yes,you use the patterns to check if everything's ok.

NNEDI3 32+ does better improving stair stepping with lines than NGU pix high and below. Only very high appears superior in this regard. I don't like NGU low much, medium is fine with a touch of edge sharpening, NNEDI3 16 sometimes wins on the lines and sometimes loses but I still prefer it over NGU pix's processed looking soft appearance (edge sharpening does help this a bit) NNEDI3 also picks up on more edges where NGU does not, in my first example this is seen around the eyes (I use the first frame for reference)

Arg, don't bother trying from physical discs, I just ripped 2 of them (to rule out a weird occurence) and the result is the same from HDD: player freeze when seeking on any build newer than (and including) 0.90.4.0.
I have no such issue with mpeg2 .mpg files so it's something related to DVD format for sure.
In your test, are you using the "MS DVD Navigator" source filter?
I don't think many users are still using XP, madVR AND playing DVDs so I'm not surprised nobody else reported the issue..
As for switching from XP to 8.1, solely for this (in my case), is way overkill ^^;
It just says "DVD Navigator", but I'm pretty sure it's the MS one. GUID is "{9B8C4620-2C1A-11D0-8493-00A02438AD48}".
Switching to 8.1 also gives you faster boot times, faster kernel, a good desktop composition implementation (no more tearing in windowed mode), support for pre-presenting up to 16 frames to the GPU (XP only supports up to 3), support for Error Diffusion algorithms, support for native 3D output, and more...
I just updated to the latest madVR and went to watch a tool-assisted speed run video from TASvideos. I always watch these with nearest neighbor upscaling, but when I went to set that in the madVR options, I noticed it was missing!
Nearest neighbor was only ever there to demonstrate how bad it is. I never intended anybody to actually use it. Why would you prefer it over other scaling options?
Try super-xbr or the new NGU pixart test builds. They should make your TASvideos look much better.
I would never cite Handbrake as an example of a good UI, but I do like that they have both a Basic settings UI and an Advanced settings UI. You can use one or the other, but not both.
Their implementation of this concept is pretty awful, but I can envision a 1.0 version of madVR with a clean and simple "Let madVR decide" UI basic mode. The current UI would be accessible to advanced users, but you couldn't use both.
As far as maintenance issues go, future "tweaks" would happen on the current UI side only. On the basic side, any changes would happen behind the scenes. The Basic UI would thus be a "once and done" development effort, at least until version 2.0.

These things have been discussed before. The settings dialog is going to be revised for v1.0, but I'm trying to keep the changes small until I reach v1.0, because GUI work is time consuming.

Yeah, I hate HDMI, you have to upgrade again and again every other year. Soon HDMI will come out with yet another version which supports 4K (and even 8K) at high frame rates + high bitdepth. Which means everybody will have to upgrade yet again.
For now, all you can do is to stick to either 1080p, or use 4Kp23.

Here's a new NGU pixart test build:

Actually, the zip contains 2 different test builds. Both builds are almost identical to each other and to the previous build with only one key difference: The NGU "very high" algorithm has been tuned. The "low", "medium" and "high" algorithms haven't changed at all. So if you want to test the new builds, please use "very high" for all your tests.
The new builds have slightly different priorities to before: The old NGU pixart test build put highest priority on anti-aliasing capabilities, which proved to be working well. However, it resulted in some artifacts sometimes, and in results maybe not always looking very natural. The tuned NGU pixart "very high" algo now compromises a little bit. I've traded in a bit of anti-aliasing capability for more natural looking results and more sharpness. The 2 new builds are very near to each other. One build has ever so slightly higher anti-aliasing abilities, the other one is ever so slightly sharper.
Included in the zip is also a little image quality comparison, with screenshots taken with: NNEDI3-256, standard NGU very high, the original NGU pixart very high, and the 2 new NGU very high variants. Please check out the images and let me know which algorithm you prefer. Please also double check with your own content to verify your preferences.
Here's my own subjective quality evaluation, based on the screenshot images in the zip:
anti-aliasing abilities: NGU-pixart-old > NGU-pixart-2 > NGU-pixart-3 > NNEDI3-256 (see kitchen and americanDad images)
natural look: NGU-pixart-3 > NGU-pixart-2 > NNEDI3-256 > NGU-pixart-old (see potatoes and suzumiya images)
sharpness: NGU-pixart-3 > NGU-pixart-2 > NNEDI3-256 > NGU-pixart-old (see castle and americanDad images)
Overall, I prefer NGU pixart 2/3 over the other options, but I can't decide if I prefer pixart 2 or 3. With some images I prefer 2, with some 3.
What are your thoughts?

not commenting on the pixart difference, but I noticed that my eyes almost every time preferred the standard NGU very high image. apparently I need a certain level of sharpness and focus, otherwise my eyes begin to hurt when switching over to the other images.

madshi, i really really like NGU-pixart-3. Looks like a middle ground between NNEDI3+SuperRes and regular NGU to me. :)

Classic NGU looks better for real life pictures while Pixel Art 3 looks better for anime but in that American Dad comparison classic NGU looks better than any.
Maybe Pixel Art 3 with extra configurable sharpening.

Are there going to be any imminent changes to the settings dialog in the next version of madVR? A reorganization of Image upscaling/ Image doubling?
I am waiting for a stable settings dialog before upgrading my main HTPC.

It just says "DVD Navigator", but I'm pretty sure it's the MS one. GUID is "{9B8C4620-2C1A-11D0-8493-00A02438AD48}".

So I guess 0.90.3 will stand as the last build fully compatible with XP, at least for DVD support. I'm pretty sure the culprit being "* last video frame is now remembered for 2 seconds when stopping graph".
If this feature could be toggled on/off in madVR settings, I believe it would solve the issue, though. Worth a test?
Switching to 8.1 also gives you faster boot times, faster kernel, a good desktop composition implementation (no more tearing in windowed mode), support for pre-presenting up to 16 frames to the GPU (XP only supports up to 3), support for Error Diffusion algorithms, support for native 3D output, and more...
I've no doubt 8.1 is enhanced for media playback and I will eventually have to switch, but for my next 4K htpc build, not with the hardware I'm currently on ^^;

NGU pix and NNEDI3 output is almost identical now (v2 is a bit closer). The one image pair in your comparison with noticable difference between NGU pix and NNEDI3 is "nature", but I'm not sure which one is better. Seems I've found this picture's "groundtruth" (https://www.flickr.com/photos/mikefb2764/2870667294/sizes/o/), so anyone can compare and decide which one is more natural.

I haven't tested with very many movies yet, but NGU pixart v3 looks very good so far for B&W SD films. v2 looks too sharp.

Yeah, standard NGU produces very nice results, when it works. It just happens to fail (sometimes spectecularly) with bad quality sources.

Don't really want sharpening configuration for pixart. Every extra option makes it more difficult for users to decide, and causes a lot of extra work for me. That's especially true for NGU where I can't just tweak some parameters in a couple of minutes, but a change in the sharpness needs a total reconfiguration of the algo.

JVC projectors have 3 panels, one for Red, Green and Blue each. So yes, your display is physically an RGB display.

It's really ugly to try to fix something if I can't reproduce it here. I suppose I could make a test build with that one change disabled, just as a test, though, when I find some time (not now).

Yeah, that "nature" image is a weird one. In that image actually the old pixart build looks much nearer to NNEDI3 than the new variants, while with all other images the new variants are nearer to NNEDI3. I'm not sure what makes this image special.

Almost identical? IMHO the new NGU pixart 2 and 3 beat NNEDI3 quite noticeably in some of the images (e.g. kitchen, americanDad and castle).

Problems with sluggish motion with Blu Ray movies on an LG B6 OLED
i cant get motion to be smooth with madvr and the LG OLED compared to what it looks like on the UHD K8500 player with the same blu ray.
i have tried different Hz but no difference.
tried switching smooth motion on/off but not better.
whats the problem with madvrs motion and LG OLEDs and why does it run so much smoother on an stationary player?
with my old 500M motion was perfect with madvr and as good as a blu ray player.
any trix or suggestions?

Some suggestions:
1) Please use display modes in the physical resolution of your TV, if possible, to avoid extra processing steps (which might harm image quality) in your TV. If your TV is really 4096x2160, then that's the right mode to use. But if your TV is actually 3840x2160, then please configure your HTPC to output 3840x2160 instead.
2) Make extra sure that all the refresh rates you enter into the madVR modes list are actually available, otherwise strange things may happen.
3) If things still react weird, you can upload a debug log and I'll see what's going on.

1) Done, I seem to have a similar bug to the one described previously on my Panasonic AX900, where the Win10 Ati Crimson driver recommends 4096x2160. But anyway, let's stick to 2160p, and see what happens.
2) Done. The issue is still there, introducing a 2160p29 or 30 puts in offside the p25...
3) How can I activate debug mode? I renamed the .ax files, I run the .bat file, and I get the error "file "madvr.ax" is missing" - but it's there...
