It is supposed to drop frames on open or seek, that is normal. You can reduce the number with the rendering -> general settings option "Delay playback start until render queue is full". The frames dropped on playback or seek probably aren't important though, I prefer faster response times without that setting even though it drops a lot of frames during open/seeks.
Odd. It annoyed me so much last year to the point I replaced my 270x with a 980ti. Elimated the issue immediately.
Now it's back, and I never had a delay on it before. Ah well, have to live with it now I guess.

Can you use NGU-high for luma? I really do recommend leaving everything on "let madVR decide" and picking the highest luma option you can. Once you have maxed out luma you can start turning up the other settings a little, if you still have performance available.

The point of "let madVR decide" is to use reasonable options given the performance the choice for luma implies. Anything below NGU-veryHigh uses Bicubic60 AR for chroma doubling, which is a very reasonable option for chroma doubling.
NGU-high increases avg rendering stats slightly (to 6-7 ms). Very-high though ramps up them to 30-38ms.
Btw, I'm a little confused hear with chorma uspacling. There is two separate options for chroma upscaling - chroma upscaling tab and chroma-upscaling option in image upscaling tab. And If I chose to sue ngu med for chroma in both tabs I get:
chroma > NGU-med
luma > ...
chroma > NGU-med
seems wrong. Is it supposed to happen?

I am not sure what the "kill my card" is about but in their newer drivers Nvidia changed the default power management mode from "adaptive" to "optimal power". Optimal power clocks too low for madVR though so you need to change back to adaptive, after I do this I don't get any dropped frames with the newest madVR at ~85% GPU usage.

How odd, though I don't use reduce ringing artifacts normally it only adds ~2.3ms on my system. I don't think the Titan X (pascal) is 4x faster than the 980Ti. ;)

I agree, the best strategy for new users is to maximize luma quality and let madVR decide everything else. I use this strategy on my own setup. Choosing let madVR decide saves so much performance. I am able to run NGU high on all sources with a GTX 750 Ti without any tinkering or advanced knowledge.
The average user may never get that far and give up for NGU medium or low without knowing they left performance on the table.

FYI: Nvidia's recent drivers have made even "adaptive" power settings glitchy with madvr+mpc-hc with low power modes when playing certain files on my system. I can recreate the low power bug with a H.265 8-bit file. Currently, I've set MPC-HC64 to use "prefer maximum performance" because of this problem. It does not matter if you choose higher load on madvr, the driver will not turn up the power mode from optimal or adaptive. Some older drivers might have worked on "adaptive" settings, but the most recent one (376.19) on my gtx980 will only do the 650mhz gpu/800mhz mem if you do not manually change the setting.

Chroma is stored in standard video at half the resolution of the luma. The "chroma upscaling" page is for upscaling the chroma to the same resolution as the luma. This is reasonably important and a good algorithm here is not wasting GPU power.
The chroma upscaling option in image upscaling is for scaling the chroma to the destination resolution, if that is above the luma resolution. This option is much less important, you have already doubled the chroma resolution so there isn't much fine detail to preserve.
This is why you get the two chroma entries in the OSD, the first one is reasonably important but the second one isn't. I wouldn't use NGU-med for chroma doubling unless I was already using NGU-veryHigh for luma doubling.
All the chroma scaling comparisons posted recently are for the first chroma upscaling option, it is hard to find samples which show obvious differences with the chroma options in image upscaling.

yes and this hybrid decoder is making problem it is using the GPU to decode the video and is increasing the rendertimes.
try to disable HEVC hardware decoding in lavfilter a cpu is usually not really slower but doesn't stress the GPU.

give Problems with Subtitles (idx/sub) and cropped h264 Video packed in a MKV:
I have chosen in madVR (under "zoom control") to move the subtitles to the bottom of the screen/window;
but in the case of the cropped Video the Subs remain always within the activ/Video area (I'm in full Screen, not windowed);
also in xysubfilter the "override Placement" Option does not allow to leave the active Video area;
is that a bug, or am I missing something?

Render times aren't the issue here. The GPU refuses to go higher than low power mode when I play the file. When I choose "prefer maximum performance" there is no issue. If I had not monitored my gpu core speed and memory, I would have thought something was wrong.

Try the suggestion anyway, hybrid decoders can sometimes do funny things to your GPU.

Hmm. Can Nvidia do something to my system with the GFE optimization updates? I swear I check every driver release with these tests and I was able to recreate this low power bug repeatedly even after reboots.
Now, I can not activate the bug even with "optimal" AND H/W decode enabled. I haven't checked if s/w decode would have worked or not but right now, everything is working...
I will investigate further. I'm very confused now.
EDIT: one thing that has changed is, I updated LAV to the latest nightly.

you get an artificially created sharpness boost with Luma Doubling why do you want to use it?
its easier to bump up the sharpness on your display instead and you get the same effect with moire patterns all over the place.
run the shaprness and oversacan file from the avshd709 disc and you will see how shitty luma doubling looks.
but you decide if you want to wreck the image or not :)
or you have the sharpness and overscan test here

That is condemnation of madVR, alright.
To each their own. I like the sharpness and know that ordinary image upscaling cannot reproduce sharp enough images, let alone edges that are too sharp. I'd rather border on too sharp than not sharp enough.
Edit: I didn't know we were talking about 200% supersampling. Of course, that is less than ideal.

I'm sorry, but I can not recreate this bug anymore... I've tried several previous versions of LAV filter and madvr 0.91.3 as well too. If I encounter this bug again, I'll make sure to note the versions as well as winver. There was a cumulative update on win10 recently and I'm not sure if that has had any effect on this bug. I am positive that I was not the only person with this low power bug in mpc-hc with madvr, but as of now, my system is working as it should. I've disabled HEVC h/w decoding as suggested.

This is a good example of why 200% supersampling isn't necessarily a good idea, and is probably why madshi resisted adding a 200% supersampling option for so long. However, NGU-veryHigh looks much better than Cubic, Jinc, etc. with that video viewed at 2560x1440 or 3840x2160.
Luma doubling is not the issue in this example, messing with an image that is already at the display resolution is the problem. If you want a single pixel black and white checkerboard to look the same then don't use 200% super sampling. :p

I would say (as a picky calibrator) that NGU High for Chroma Upscaling maximizes this KRP-500M for sharpness and details
its amazing how much more sharpness there is now compared to NNEDI3 and still not "over sharp"
anything more than this in terms of sharpness with Luma Doubling will reduce picture quality with to sharp edges and moire patterns.

if you want more stable results switch to CUVID Decoding with it even maximum performance isn't the perfect solution as the frequency scaling still happens and will always cause latency issues thus the arbitrator not adapting efficient enough like it does for a fixed function decoder within the VPX and through DXVA Native/Copy Back.

Btw that Screen Captures of yours are really well done :)
Somehow i love Samsungs Cinema Magic Bright Preset for that Content type it does a great job even on your Screen Captures that mars stones get much more warm almost red and the sharrpening step makes the textures pop out and the indoor scene gets a much colder specular response.
and all that wish wash blur disapears though on the Desktiop i get headaches from that brightness.

Yes, because the improvement is visible and the reduction in performance is almost nonexistent.
The next step (NGU-Low) for chroma doubling is much much more demanding, and maybe you want to keep the remaining power for something else, while having the best quality you can get without using NGU-Low and getting a huge performance lost.

Don't need perfect 23.976, just close enough, although depending on card you may already be close enough without needing to do this (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1781800#post1781800).
My pick with be Nvidia, seems to play a lot nicer with madVR overall plus far better power efficiency. I wouldn't bother with NNEDI3 64 neurons for chroma (I'd personally wouldn't use anything over NNEDI 3 32)
better off with NGU (if you like it sharp) try super-xbr and free up some headroom for luma stuff.

He means when he selects 24hz madVR reports 23.970, I get 23.9753 when using the custom res which doesn't result in any drops for at least a few hours which is long enough.
he just needs to do the same or give AMD a shot.. though everything I've seen so far make me think them somewhat problematic.

I get screen tearing when using fullscreen exclusive mode on my 60 Hz monitor (with or without smooth motion). Fullscreen windowed works just fine. On my TV and projector at 24 and 60Hz respectively, I have no tearing in exlusive mode. And ideas? :S

Don't what how the madvr performance is comparable, but I would go with the rx480 because of the future proof features (hdmi 2.0, hdr, 60hz 4k)
Nano is small and only has one cooler. Maybe it is a bit loud.
Ideally you should wait till january. New rx580 and fury cards (codename vega) will be released. Price for old cards will drop and new ones will bring better performance for the money. I wouldn't go for an old nano.

Here's a strange one, and not sure if it's just me.
I've been messing around with the settings since yesterday after my little moan, and i've discoverd NGU is causing my Palit 980ti to emit a very audible electric noise. Causes a big spike in voltage in GPU-Z.
I noticed it yesterday but ignored it whilst I tried to resolve other issues I was having with the program. None of the other settings cause the same problem, even NNEDI 256 (besides the huge frame drops lol).

Doesn't sound like typical coil whine (more like a fying noise, no smell or anything and no impact on performance btw so it seems ok), I don't get it in games and I have owned the card for just over a year. First time i've ever heard it.
Like I said, i've only just discovered it using NGU. Any other settings even at max doesn't produce the noise either.
Why is that? Genuine question btw. How could NGU in MadVR, even at its lowest setting, produce the noise but Assassins Creed on max settings bogging down the frames and using all the power not do the same? :confused:

Physical phenomenon called resonance. E.g. when driving a car, several components are shaking and vibrating because of the moving motor and the running wheels on the street. When the vibration has the same frequency like the resonance frequency of a certain component, this component starts to produce larger movements itself and gets loud. The said component (e.g. not perfect tight component of the dashboard) gives e.g the loudest noise when the motor has 2315rpm. When highering or lowering the rpm the loudness of the sound gets lower. Or the tyres give trhe loudest noise when driving exactly 34mph, when driving faster or slower the noise calms down.
So this phenomenon is dependant on speed (or amount of load, sort of load, GPU frequency when speaking of a GPU), but this does NOT mean "higher speed -> more noise". It means: "exactly the RIGHT speed -> the loudest noise".
Hope this analogy helps a little bit, the question concerning electric noise with NGU came along a few times already... :sly:

Man, I leave for a week and the topic grows by a dozen pages :)
Currently my hope is that I might be able to make NGU direct quadrupling (at least "Low" + "Med" quality levels) roughly as fast as "NGU doubling + JincAR upscaling", while producing better image quality than doubling with NGU twice.Hmm, that's a pity. I have some profiles set up for 60fps content that probably wouldn't be able to manage that.
I ran into some problems with it, though, so I can't say for sure right now if I can make a tripling NGU variant that is noticeably faster than quadrupling. It's possible tripling could end up with the same performance as quadrupling. If that's the case I probably won't bother creating tripling, because quadrupling + cheap downscaling will then probably offer the same or better image quality at similar speed. But it's all not decided yet.I hope some form of tripling will be possible :) Even if the performance isn't better than quadrupling + downscaling (ouch), it might be better for cards that are struggling with the memory usage.

Quadrupling with NGU probably adds way less value than just doubling, so on 0.91.2 in some cases I'm using NGU med or high for doubling and NGU low for quadrupling right now (or turning quadrupling off altogether). In other cases I can only manage low for doubling, low doubling + low quadrupling would be way too expensive (but the resolution would warrant it in some cases). I haven't had time to play with the new versions yet.

Happens to me as well with NGU (no such thing with NNEDI3). Nothing to worry about but can be annoying. It just uses a very specific part of the GPU chip or very specific parameters IDK. You should be able to reproduce it in games if you let your framerate reach 200+ (menus are great for this). I can definitely reproduce it if I disable g-sync and let my framerate skyrocket in some games. It is pretty interesting that NGU manages to trigger it with a low framerate.

I get dropped frames every 3 to 4 minutes

Super-XBR 150 looks pretty good even as a doubler and doesn't even make my GPU hot. I'm a bit confused with the graph when doubling and quadrupling is enabled. I'm guessing the graph is bugged as changing any Super-XBR setting has no effect on it anyway.

I feel NGU for chroma goes a bit overboard, super-xbr looks quite nice here.

Yeah, I wanted as as accurate as I could too, and huhn said the same thing to me. Like I said you only need it accurate "enough" which means if it only drops a frame every five plus hours and you never play anything over three hours you're never going to see a dropped frame. I haven't seen one since I've changed it and it's been glorious.
I might not have considered 24Hz had huhn not been so adamant about his preference for it.. The motion is just more clear at 24Hz on my plasma and really seems to pop.
It's more enjoyable and now I don't get any dropped frames so I reckon it's pretty much perfect.

By default it's ticked, the title gives you your answer..
"Trade quality for performance"
When ticked This makes dithering done in gamma light which in this case doesn't yield the best results, although you may not notice the difference hence why it's ticked by default.
Basically untick everything on that page if you want the utmost quality.
