I thought madVR overrode those setting?

I thought it did too, but apparently not. It may be something to do with 11.3 drivers, but unfortunately I've only recently started to mess with any of the settings when I noticed stuttering after tweaking settings for a game.

Hi bjd,

I have a similar LCD TV set up, and the NVidia driver defaults to 1920x1080/59p. However I was able to set up a custom 50p resolution and MadVR correctly shows this in exclusive mode.

Edit: my TV's EDID is totally screwed and says the max res is 1280x720

Did you manipulate the EDID data stored in the registry in any way to get it working, or did you only create a custom resolution ( like I did ) ?

I'm using 11.2.

I have 10.6, and I think I'm going to roll back to them.

I have updated to the latest nvidia drivers 270.51 and I to have had some problems with default resolutions the driver finds for the card. I had to add 24hz as a custom resolution because the drive thinks my panel does not support it.

Question for those having trouble with dropped and delayed frames. Have you tried adjusting your 3D settings for your video card? I had a similar problem after tweaking a few things and I traced it down to my Anti-Aliasing settings. Super-sample AA causes dropped frames on every setting on my 5770 card, but Adaptive Multi-sample does not.

My 3D settings are different. AA is just 2x to 8x, with a filter setting as well, and then another setting for Adaptive AA which is an enable box plus a level slider.

Dunno what to set it all too.

I think I will roll back the driver.

Just created a custom resolution in my case because of overscan on the HDMI port () 1824x1016/50P. MadVR & ReClock correctly identify.

Are you considered to make native 64bit version and DXVA support in the future?
Has been asked a million times in this thread. Please use search... :)

Does this actually impact FSE mode?
Currently yes, but not for much longer.

Here are the results for different chains:
Test #1: A+ffdshow+madrv = smooth
Test #2: A+lavcuvid+EVR = smooth
Test #3: A+MPC DXVA+EVR = smooth
Test #4: A+lavcuvid+madvr = jerky

Test #5: B+ffdshow+madvr = jerky
Test #6: B+lavcuvid+EVR = jerky
Test #7: B+MPC DXVA+EVR = smooth
Test #8: B+lavcuvid+madvr = jerky

Test #2 and #4:
It's interesting that only test #4 is jerky, while test #2 is not as GPU load in test #4 is only around 50%, while all queues are between 1-8/8 and 7-8/8. Seems that it's just a tad too slow.
The number of dropped and delayed frames grows about every other second on Test #4 - not pleasant.

Test #5:
This could actually be the CPU not being fast enough to decode - CPU load shows enormous spikes. The queues are jumping around like crazy, I can't really describe it. Basically all possible values can be seen.

Test #6 and Test #7:
While test #7 proves that the decoder chip is fast enough for the clip, test #6 still is jerky.

Test #8:
Expected result after test #4.

Test #5, #6 and #8:
Basically hundreds, if not thousands, dropped frames per minute.

That said nevcairiel announced performance improvements for lavcuvid, so I guess waiting until then is an option before looking into the possibility of improving the teamwork of those two filters.
Yeah, I'd wait for that. And also for the final exclusive mode rendering path which is the next thing on my to do list.

I get lots of frame drops in window mode when playing the 1080p60 sample on my desktop, which has a Core i7 and a HD 5850. No drops in FSE mode though. I also see tearing.
This is on Windows 7 x64 with Aero off, catalyst 11.2 + 11.4
You can try playing around with the tweaks, especially the flush settings. Also make sure you don't force Antialiasing, Anisotropic filtering etc in the GPU driver control panel.

I was wondering if it was possible for madVR to do the deinterlacing. Like port the yadifx2 that gets used in ffdshow and execute it using the GPU shader units??
The general topic "deinterlacing" is on my list of things to look at. I can't say much about it right now.

Just bought myself a new system and got madVR up & running today and I'm having serious playback problems; primarily in fullscreen exclusive, with subtitle rendering disabled. (first thing I checked)
I'd say just wait for the final exclusive mode rendering path, which will come very soon.

When using madVR should you be using the internal filters in mpc-hc or ffdshow? or does it not really matter?
Both should work, but in my experience the ffdshow filters are slightly less buggy.

Hello, I have a problem with the MicroDVD format, which occurs during video playback in AVI, MKV. Reveals a lack of synchronization.
I have same problem as @pawlol83, subtitles are out of sync when madVR or haali VR are in use. EVR-CP works fine with subtitles. So i pretty sure that is like you said, it's a bug in MPC-HC.
I've found a way to fix it. Try again with the next madVR build.

I have a problem with madVRs fullscreen exclusive mode. My monitor is a Samsung Syncmaster, which is capable to work with 50Hz refresh rate at a resolution of 1920x1080, but it does not report that in it's EDID data. Instead it claims that the minimum refresh rate is 59Hz, which is not true. So I configured Windows to show the "resolutions not supported by this monitor" and created a user defined resolution with timings for 50Hz progressive, and this works fine.

Now the problem: I am playing back a movie which has 25fps, so I adjust the refresh rate to 50Hz. This works fine in windowed mode with both VMR9 and madVR. When using VMR9 and MPC-HCs internal D3D mode, also everything is ok. When I use madVR and configure it not to use the exclusive mode, also everything is ok. But if I use madVR with activated exclusive mode, the refresh rate changes from 50Hz to 59,9Hz when switching to full screeen, and changes back to 50Hz when switching back to the window.

My best guess is that madVR relies on the EDID data and ignores the fact, that there is a user defined resolution which explicitly allows 50Hz refresh rate, disregardng the EDID information.
No, your guess is not correct... :) madVR tells Direct3D to use a refresh rate of "0". That means that Direct3D is supposed to not touch the refresh rate, but leave it at the same value used in windowed mode. Unfortunately it seems that sometimes either Direct3D or maybe the GPU driver doesn't do what they're supposed to do. There's not much I can do about it right now. I guess that things might work if I told Direct3D explicitly to use 50Hz in your case, so I think the problem will probably be solved once I implement automatic refresh rate switching. But until then you'll have to live with the way things are right now.

I installed the new version today and used it a bit but now I can't get external/internal subs anymore with VMR-9 renderless in MPC HC (I'm on Windows XP). I must have messed up something. Installed a new version of MPC HC and installed/de-installed DirectVobSub as well. Normally subs work in DXVA mode or non-DXVA external or internal, now nothing works anymore (yeah VLC does lol).

No harm meant to madVR (it does look really nice, and it has worked in the past alongside VMR-9) but I just want my MPC HC + DXVA + subs (external/internal) back.
madVR can in no way affect whether subtitles work with other renderers or not. So this is a problem totally unrelated to madVR.

One slightly annoying problem I noticed: I've got two displays, and when madVR goes in exclusive mode, it sometimes (but not always) prevents me from interacting with stuff on the other monitor (actually, as far as I can see, one of 3 things can happen: 1. mouse input is ignored completely on other monitor; 2. mouse interaction works, but as soon as I release mouse button, focus returns to the video; 3. I can use programs on the other monitor normally).
Can anybody else reproduce this?

Yeah, good hint.

I thought madVR overrode those setting?
I wish I could, but that's not how things work. madVR tells the GPU driver what settings it wants. If you set the GPU settings to "let the application decide" madVR gets what it wants. But if you force antialiasing or anisotropic filtering in the GPU driver control panel, things are out of my hands.

madVR v0.48 released

http://madshi.net/madVR.zip

* fixed: resource leak in OSD text messages
* disabled "Play" and "Pause" OSD messages until rendering chain is rewritten
* added support for ISubRenderCallback2, appears to fix subtitle sync problems
There were 3 subtitle problems reported:

(1) missing lines (probably caused by resource leak)
(2) subtitles disappear when pausing playback (caused by the "Pause" OSD message)
(3) subtitles were not in sync with some external subtitle files

All problems should be fixed in v0.48. I expect subtitles with v0.48 to behave pretty much identical to the internal VMR/EVR renderers now.

The problem (3) was mainly a bug in MPC-HC. I've applied some changes to MPC-HC, plus some more to madVR. So problem (3) should be fixed now, too, *BUT* you need to use MPC-HC version 1.5.2.3005 or newer. With older MPC-HC builds problem (3) will still occur.

You can try playing around with the tweaks, especially the flush settings. Also make sure you don't force Antialiasing, Anisotropic filtering etc in the GPU driver control panel.

I deactivated forced AA and I played around with the settings but nothing seemed to work. If anyone has any hints plz tell. 4^4 settings for the flush options alone is a lot of testing.

Is it normal that settings are only stored in a file in the madvr.ax directory? I was wondering why my settings were not being saved and it seems that was the cause, as it did not have write access to the program folder were I had put it.
Proper way to save settings would be registry or at least %appdata% I think?

feedback on 0.48
The backwards seeking subtitles on (de)activating the seek bar problem seems to be solved. I don't know if that was your plan - probably the others who reported the problem of disappearing subs didn't notice that they would seek back.

FWIW, the real bug is still not solved, I've just worked around it. And the workaround is only for madVR, not for Haali's Video Renderer. So what I did is pretty limited to benefit only madVR. But then the only added benefit of a proper fix would be that subtitles with Haali's Video Renderer would be fixed, too. And I'm not willing to spend more time on this just for that... :p

Bah. As long as it works with madVR, does anyone care? :D LOL! Now that I have nev's decoder on my bedroom machine, madVR is ALL I use. Having subs working in that environment rocks!

Madvr tells the gpu driver what settings it wants. If you set the gpu settings to "let the application decide" madvr gets what it wants. But if you force antialiasing or anisotropic filtering in the gpu driver control panel, things are out of my hands.

So I did that (All settings "Let the..."),and my rendering times from 10.2 are back !
Now,I have a theory but you'll have to confirm:since it is clear that the 3d settings kick in when madVR is in use, could it be that they affect the image quality in a good way ? MadVR is programmed like a D3D video game renderer after all.

For those having pbs with 3d settings interfering, just create two profiles (With and without) in the CCC.Works like a charm for me.

Yes.

No, definitely not.

I know you know better but really,I wonder:
- in the CCC,I have AA8X,edge detect,AF 16X (Max settings for my card)
- madVR 0.43,with Spline,4 taps for Chroma and Luma

Except for the higher rendering times (Wich turned out to have no incidence on the output),I have strictly zero image corruption, dropped or delayed frames (Except when the cpu is maxed out).
So why do you do say it affects the image in a bad way ?

madshi
1st April 2011, 20:34
I didn't say that the 3D settings will affect the image quality. I confirmed that it "could be that they affect the image quality". That's quite a difference. If they do affect image quality, then it can't be in a good way because any deviation from "mathematically correct" can only be bad.

I'd say just wait for the final exclusive mode rendering path, which will come very soon. Will do!

Funnily enough, I had also been forcing some driver settings on my new system now that it was capable of it. Not anti-aliasing, but I had AF at 16x and texture quality at the maximum.

I have now created a profile for MPC-HC with everything back at the defaults and am running 0.48 with MPC-HC subtitles on.

While I'm not sure if that was the cause or not, that combined with disabling the "upload frames in render thread" and changing the flush settings to my old flush, sleep, flush, don't (though I'm not sure it has any effect on exclusive as it's in the windowed section) seems to have videos playing back smoothly without dropping frames - at least it hasn't in the last 20 minutes or so of testing.

I am still getting queues of:
7-8/8
7-8/8
1-3/8
0-2/3

Which seems low considering the specs, but I'll wait and see how the final exclusive mode turns out. At least I can actually watch some films again.

Update: Still dropping frames, but it was only up to 5 or so about 50 minutes in which is tolerable for now. Better than dropping frames every minute or two as it was doing before.

A quick reply on 0.48: (2) fixed for me too. Had to gather some more data for the other.

Some ideas on 3D setting: from my experiences, some 3D settings do effect MPC-HC subtitle rendering. If I remember correctly, it's texture quality. When I was using 3870, choosing higher texture quality would introduce stuttering since GPU isn't fast enough to do that. I havn't try on my current setup though. Also, be careful of the morphological filtering, as it is post-processing and (I guess) it could actually try to do something to the video. I think it's like one of those denoise/sharpening stuff but applied to "game" mode.

Mark,I suspect the driver.Try 10.8 for your hd4850.

@Mark_A_W , I have to keep 4 files from 10.6 driver to be able to play 1080p contents , otherwise delay/drop frames like crazy .
Core2Duo 2.0GHz , ATI 4670 512MB
4 files :
atiumd6a.ca_
atiumd6a.dl_
atiumd64.dl_
atiumdag.dl_

I thought it did too, but apparently not. It may be something to do with 11.3 drivers, but unfortunately I've only recently started to mess with any of the settings when I noticed stuttering after tweaking settings for a game.

You guys were right - I rolled back to Catalyst 10.6, and yup, it just works now.

Interestingly, Hyperthreading no longer causes a problem, whereas with 11.2 it DEFINITELY caused a big problem.

madshi, you may want to put a warning in the first post.

It'd be nice to get ATi to fix whatever they broke

I actually try to suggest that there are probably some settings that cause it rather than the driver. Mine was fine in 11.2 and before those as well. Of course, if you have no interest in newer driver (which is fair game), stick with what works is a good idea. :)

I also just tested 10.6 to see if it solves the dropped frames I see when playing 1080p60 in window mode and it did indeed help. Too bad there was a bug fix in 10.12 (not madVR related) that I don't want to miss out on.

The ones that look best to you?

But if you want details, search this thread or google, except if someone wants to explain all options right now...

Would if be possible in madVR to have an option to enable the seekbar in regular windowed mode too? Ideally when you mouse down to the bottom 20% of the window it would show up.

Sooner or later I'll add some more OSD options (e.g. an option to disable the "exclusive"/"windowed" OSD messages). At that point in time I can also add an option to make the seekbar available in windowed mode. For now I'd rather skip that, other things to do. Feel free to bug me about it again some time later...

I do not know. I merely suggest that we should not concluded that it's intrinsic to driver version and not some kind of settings just yet.

could there possibly some subtitle problem with the current build of madvr and/or mpc-hc (3008)? for some strange reason, they dont show for mpeg2 hdtv remuxes, while the same subtitle file (.srt or .ass) plays when I use it alongside a blu-ray remux (avc). cant tell whether its a problem of the mpc renderer or direcvobsub, but no (re)enabling of either seems to help.

it was all fine, until I tried that first build when mpc-hc began to support such subs some days ago and i activated those -.-

edit: now I got the subs showing up after I deinstalled directvobsub. but no matter if srt or ass, they dont look the way they are supposed to look. all the usual look and styling is gone. they look like crap. how can I get their normal look back?

editē: after unticking default style, it looks better, more close to the original style. still not completely though. the positioning of the .ass subs are ignored (located at the bottom of the screen) and they are also slightly blurry compared to when it was working fine with directvobsub.

Does the same problem occur with EVR/VMR? If so, it's not a madVR problem and you need to ask in the MPC-HC thread.

Thunderbolt8
2nd April 2011, 20:31
noticed that madvr apparently doesnt get loaded in these cases. in case of 4 out of 5 mpeg2 hdtv remuxes, madvr doesnt load and all 4 have added subs inside the .mkv file, while the one which does play has none.
guess it might be a madvr problem :p

edit: alright, in case of haali and evr, in none of all cases the subs appeared. so it might be a mpc-hc problem, but cant tell for sure, because I dont know what to make out of that one case, when madvr loaded. problem seems to be that direcvobsub doesnt load up when using haali or evc

editē: it seems that directvobsub doesnt load up with haali at all, while it does at least for (avc) blu-ray remuxes with evr. Ill post that in the mpc-hc thread.

madVR only loads if it's fed with YV12. Your problem doesn't sound like a madVR problem to me, but rather like an MPC-HC misconfiguration or bug.
