If posterization is caused due to a LUT, it should appear even if the LUT is checked on a different system. So, you can still try the Gamma 2.2 LUT and evaluate the same scenes where you saw posterization previously. You can also toggle the DCI-P3 LUT that you used then to compare.

As your projector setup is in a different state as it was when you did the profiling, your comments about the other LUT (HDR to SDR one) are not helpful. It doesn't make sense when you report images looking super flat with a LUT when your projector is in a different configuration. For what it's worth, that LUT can also be evaluated on a flat panel display with high peak nits, if the aim is to check for posterization.

I used CRU with these timings as that is how it finally worked with my JVC

These timings are great. I get 23.97618 Hz, which is supposed to repeat a frame every ~24 hours, so pretty much perfect.

Did you come up with these timings on your own, or did you find them somewhere?

Upload images somewhere else, they won't be approved here shortly, since you have a 1080Ti madVR would be best if the TV and madVR were configured right.

*looks like approval times have gotten better

Just used the internal image hosting option, nothing else

Ok, what does "configured right" mean?
More specific, please :)

I was just asking from a HDR standpoint, everything else in madVR is configured right (using an UHD very high quality preset at the moment)

Thanks

I'm going to uninstall madVr and start from scratch since no one has any suggestions for a madVr setting problem other than asking for screenshots https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1910630#post1910630
Maybe reinstalling will get it working... maybe not and it's just broken because other things have advanced no longer compatible with some aspects of madVr? With no one willing to test that madVr setting, reinstalling is all I know to try.

I can't seem to find instructions how to completely uninstall madVr along with residual registry settings though? Would someone be kind enough to tell me how or direct me to a verified link where someone else shows how and has been used reliably by someone from here?
TIA.

Hi, from some time I have one problem with MadVR, when I'm watching something in fullscreen mode and the next movie starts, until I exit fullscreen I have black screen (after that I can normally enter the full screen again), but the movie is still playing and I hear the sound for a min or two, than it freezes completely.
I tried every setting that I thought would be the cause, but nothing works. Any idea what would be the cause of this?

Below are the details of what I'm using:
PotPlayer 64bit - latest stable version
MadVR - latest
LAVfilters
XYsubfilter

Cant test atm but did you activate RCA for chroma too? Not sure this is „free“?
Anyway: RCA is called „denoise“ in madVR stats?

RCA is Deblock, and it is not entirely free when combined with NGU, but it is a lot cheaper.

RRN is Denoise.

So @brazen1 is using denoise and wondering why RCA isnt free?
I am a little bit confused ... ;)

I took them from here:

I see.
RRN = Denoise.
RCA = Deblock.

Assigned them assbackwards when mapping.

What settings do you use to deinterlace interlaced videos (576i,1080i) coming from tv recordings?

huhn

Lav filter with Dxva copy back?

that doesn't affect it and make other deinterlacer possible but DXVA2 copyback is not a deinterlacer.

this is true

So what combination do you use to deinterlace?

huhn
9th May 2020, 04:00
well not d3d11 native "it" blocks some features and with "it" i mean madVR by not implementing it. it's possible to deinterlace with d3d11 just not with madVR.

is done auto automatically.
with DXVA2 native you have only access to DXVA2 deinterlace with copyback or software you can use software deint as an example from lav filter or even use IVTC from madVR.
with CUVID or quicksync you can use hardware deint from nvidia or intel which should be the same deint as madVR uses.

By default I select D3D11 with madvr, it is possible to create a profile that select DXVA copy back only for interlaced videos?

no just disable everything that's not HEVC or VP9 or disable 1080p and lower so software is used in this case.

How to play 4:4:4 videos without chroma reduction to 4:2:0? madVr osd shows "h264, 10 bit 4:4:4 -> NV12, 8 bit, 4:2:0". I tried changing video decoders between ffmpeg and lav but the output is the same.

this should work by default.
if you are using mpc-hc go to play -> filters -> "copy filter list to..."

and post that here there are a lot of other filter that can change this.

sorry i don't even know what GPU you are using and if you even changed deint settings in madVR.

madVR uses DXVA2 deint if it is bad like with AMD you will get a bad result.

try yadif in lavfilter as an alternitive.

I have an intel nuc, i have not changed anything in madvr default deinterlace settings, because i want to use D3D11 in madvr.
If i use yadif in lavfilter it will be forced even if video is not interlaced?

not it will only be used on interlaced content.
but intel is supposed to have a good deint.
so plz make a screen of the OSD maybe i can see something wrong.

How to play 4:4:4 videos without chroma reduction to 4:2:0? madVr osd shows "h264, 10 bit 4:4:4 -> NV12, 8 bit, 4:2:0". I tried changing video decoders between ffmpeg and lav but the output is the same.

@failax
D3D11 rendering may perform worse on Intel GPU. There have been a few reports from people where it gives stuttering.
D3D11 decoding (in LAV) doesn't support deinterlacing in native mode. That has not yet been implemented in madVR.

@garson
Create a folder called "ShowRenderSteps" within the madvr folder. It may reduce performance a tiny bit, so only use it for testing.

Deselecting D3D11 for Sd and Mpg files and putting Yadif and aggressive mode I reached discrete results. Thanks

I've no problem with D3D11, sometimes with LAV audio filters, but after reinstalling MPC Be and filters it returns to normality.

this should work by default.
if you are using mpc-hc go to play -> filters -> "copy filter list to..."

and post that here there are a lot of other filter that can change this.

Thank you, it worked correctly with mpc-hc. I was trying potplayer previously. Disabling video transform filter in potplayer gives full 4:4:4 output. Avisynth(needed due to svp) in potplayer was causing chroma subsampling.

Hi friends,

I am running into a peculiar issue with my RTX 2080 on newest GeForce Game Ready driver as of today.

When I try to use MadVR's Custom Modes to create and measure a custom 23hz profile, I can see that MadVR "activates" it and litereally thinks it is using it. But in the Nvidia Control Panel, I can see it has changed the refresh rate to 24hz. From then on, if I ever try to change anything on the 23hz profile, I can press "Test mode" and I can see that even though 23hz is clicked and marked, MadVR activates 24hz mode, and hence, nothing is being applied to the 23hz mode. It's like my system won't accept 23hz and creates a 24hz instead. How ever, of course the default 23hz profile works fine. It just won't create a custom instead.

No matter what I do, the refresh rate created when I "edit" 23hz is in fact 24hz in the Nvidia Control Panel. I did a clean driver install just to be sure.

I'll paste in a photo here just so you can see what I mean with the two settings. :s
Here (https://i.imgur.com/JMhTNLy.png).

Any ideas? :)

I did a quick search on this but I couldn't really find anything about it - but of course I could have missed it. I also read the sparse documentation I could find on the whole Custom Mode feature - I'm sorry and I hope you can point me in the right direction.

I'd be happy to supply a video of the flow and the resulting issue if my description is not comprehensible with the attached photo. :|

EDIT: I guess I should metion I am on the latest stable of MadVR, available from the madvr website - I haven't dabbled in the betas.

The problems with 23Hz (23.976Hz) and 24Hz (24.000Hz) seem to be very frequent.
Often it is a problem of certain drivers and you canīt really do anything against it directly.
If your display device accepts other refresh rates like 50Hz or 60 Hz thereīs a good chance that it accepts 47 Hz (meaning 47.952Hz = 2 * 23.976Hz) as well.
This would be the workaround so you can avoid the conflicting 23/24Hz modes by using 24.000Hz and 47.952Hz.
MadVR handles multiples of the needed refresh rate correctly, so you can use values like 47.952 Hz or 48.000Hz or 72.000Hz or 71.928Hz...
It is only important that your display device accepts it.

Another possibility is to use CRU (EDID overrides), but sometimes this method doesnīt work.

Interesting stuff. I did just run CRU for the first time. As you can probably see from my image I have a DENON receiver in between the graphics output device and my display. In CRU the DENON shows up, and under "detailed resolutions" I added one for 23.976 and restarted the PC. Under my resolutions I now have a custom PC resolution set to 24hz again, but when I run a video stream in MadVR I clock in at 23.977, which is almost on the spot for the new resolution. :s So even if NVCP reports 24Hz, could it be that 23.976Hz is really being utilized? My findings certainly seem to confirm this. That is just so odd since the default 23Hz setting which should "target" 23.976Hz ends up at 23.980-something in MadVR's info. Hrm..

Anyway, it seems like CRU does something anyway, even if it's still saying 24. I dunno man - I appreciate the help and I think I'm just gonna live with the false number in Windows/Nvidia. Cause I can't explain it.

Can someone please help me setup custom resolution modes for madvr please as Ive had no luck from the tutorial here. http://madvr.com/crt/CustomResTutorial.html
I have the Nvidia 1080Ti card and use JRiver.

The tutorial looks different to my images below. They have an APPLY button, mine is Test Mode.
All Ive tried at this stage is 23hz but when I click test mode, it starts to load, click yes, then a box jumps up with "you cant modify the active mode"

Can someone please help me, what am I doing wrong? (see pix)
Thank you in advance....
(sorry cant load the pix here)

Hi, you gotta go into your AMD or Nvidia panel and change your Hz to 24, 25, 29, 30, 50 or 60 in order to click "Yes" in the window you mention. If your monitor or projector is already set to 23Hz, you cannot edit the mode as it is "active". So change to another Hz setting, then click "Test mode" on 23Hz and then you can hit "Yes".

Yes, this is what I see as well. Nvidia calls it 24Hz but it really is my custom 23.9xx refresh rate.

Then test mode?

I set the card to 50hz, ran some 23hz material and tried everything on the list under test, it wouldnt allow any to pass. Why is this?

I as well have a question about 23.976Hz and 24Hz. I use latest MPC-HC x64 (1.9.2), latest Madvr (0.92.17), running on Windows 10 x64 and nVidia GT1030. My Samsung TV support 23,24,25,29Hz etc. 23Hz should be 23.976Hz, 24 is 24.I see that in MadVR in Display Modes (Custom Modes).
I noticed that 24fps movie is being run as 23.976 so 1 dropped frame every 43 seconds.
Last night I accidentally changed mode from FSE to windowed and it worked fine, 24fps movie was run as 24 not 23.976 as in FSE.

Does someone know why in FSE madvr can't switch correctly to 24Hz? Perhaps bug in madvr?

:thanks:

I recently bought an X-Rite i1Display Studio thinking it would be life changing as a few say you need one to get the best out of everything.

It has changed my life, it has ruined it. :)

I was quite ignorant (still am) as usual and after reading a few things I have come to the conclusion that you cant really use DisplayCal to calibrate your TV, you have to use HCFR, then I read dont do that, just create a 3DLut for MadVR.

Everything I seem to do makes MadVR worse, when I use the Lut everything is washed out ?

Is there an up to date guide for HCFR and DisplayCal, as Im starting to feel like I have wasted my money here.

what gamma setting are you using under display cal?

there is no general answer to calibration it depends heavily on your end device.

is it stable and has a mode where it is relative linear then 3D LUT calibration even with 5000 patches do work perfectly.

does it have an "unbeatable" active back light then creating a 3D LUT is hell and more patches make it worse or your reading are generally not useful.

for the reason you got washed out results could bt 1886. could be bad readings could be bad settings who knows was the verification after the 3d lut fine?

Hi there.

What is the difference from the calibration tab vs the HDR tab when it comes to 3D luts?

Is the calibration tab for SDR content and HDR for HDR?

If I’m calibrated using 709, how does it affect the convert/process hdr from the HDR tab?

I’m getting some posterization in shadows, fade in and out.

that's the best source you can use.
but sorry with these information i can't really help you my first guess would be your readings are just bad and i don't know why but such guess are really bad.

on a Tv you are sadly not guarantied to get a good result you have fix fix some settings first. like a preset like movie professional has to be selected first to make sure the TV doesn't do his stuff.

feel free to post your verification here. and a screen with control+shift+alt+3 so we cna at least get an idea what is happening.

HCFR is mainly to nail down the TV's internal settings if you have access to 11point gamma .

If you only have access to a 2 point gamma like on some projectors/ older tvs, then Displaycal is just as easy to use.

Now, what huhn is saying is, For TVs, you need to be in the right mode such that it 1, does not use any dynamic contrast, 2 does not auto dim backlight, 3 using the NATIVE tv Gamut.

HCFR makes some of these aspects easier to identify. Why does it matter? The less complicated a correction the LUT has to make, the better the result.

But in either case, post your reading, and we can take a look at it. Even though I'm 95% sure it's cuz you selected bt1886, bt1886 is shit.
