I found a problem that I've been having since like 0.54 actually:
Note: This happens with or without the glitch hack activated
Play video in windowed mode, pause video, lock screen with Windows Key + L, unlock Windows and replay video....dropped frames with no fix. If I go into exclusive mode by double-clicking it's smooth again.

One thing I noticed is that you must specify more than one mode, ie, 1080p23, 1080p59, ....
My display normally stays on 1080p59, so I thought I could put 1080p23 and madVR would switch to that when needed, and just not do anything with other rates (almost everything else I watch needs 1080p59). But until I added the second mode, it would not switch.
I think that's not true. Perhaps that was the bug in 0.57?
It's the same for me with 0.58. Anybody else notice this, or is just me?
@madshi:
You asked for feedback on the "glitch hack". For me, there is no difference as far as I can tell - not in FSE or windowed mode. Everything is fine either way.

madVR v0.58 released
http://madshi.net/madVR.zip
* fixed: 23p/59i movie did not activate 59p display mode
* removed v0.57 win7 specific presentation path again, didn't work so well
* added glitch hack as a new render option (Vista/Win7 only)
Would be great if everybody could test the "glitch hack" and give FEEDBACK on whether it's better/worse/equal for you. FWIW, when you activate the glitch hack, madVR always does a "flush & wait" after the last render step now, even if you tell it not to, because otherwise there would be nasty artifacts.
With the glitch hack deactivated, v0.58 should behave more or less similar to v0.56 (with added display mode changing functionality, of course).
EDIT: The glitch hack also affects windowed mode, btw. (but again only in Vista / Windows 7)
There is no difference for me with or without the hack providing I set the third or forth flush setting to flush (with or without wait) when not using the hack. If I do not do that then the glitch counter keeps incrementing through playback.

With 0.58 (maybe from 0.57 or a little bit earlier version), the 1920x1080p24 FILM content's playback with 0.5x zoom mode (use madVR Pixel Shader scaler) is no longer smooth on my Ion (9300M) system. A lot of randomly dropped or delayed frames pop up in the statistics. For 1280x720p24 / p25 contents, the playback is just fine.
In my memory, it was ok on old madVR versions for the 1080p24 contents.
Thus I am curious if the lastest madVR makes the GPU even more stressful?
CPU: C2D P8600 (2.4GHz 3MB L2)
Chipset: nVidia Ion 9300M
RAM: 8GB (4GB DDR3-1333 * 2, Dual-ch mode)
Screen: 1400x1050 @72Hz
Video: H.264 1920x1080 23.976 fps --> resized to 960x540 Window mode
Aero: ON
Player: MPC-HC
Decoder: CoreAVC + CUDA
[Updated at 4/23/2011]
It works fine once the glitch hack is turned on.
This option seems useful for the GPU which computation power is just enough.

I can confirm this (playing 1080p23.976 source @ 60Hz)
UPDATE:
1/ I have to set 3rd & 4th flush setting to flush with or without the hack to prevent glitch counter's increment
2/ For 3rd & 4th flush setting:
* Choosing flush only on both: 4 - 6 glitches at the beginning, then the increment stop.
* Choosing flush & wait: 0 glitch.

Using 5770 in windowed mode and Aero off, i get smooth playback except tearing at the bottom. Is this normal with ATI cards? I had a chance to use a GTX260 and that gave me no tearing once I turned on vsync in the Nvidia control panel. This happens with madVR and EVR.

Yes, Aero off on Win7 = tearing in videos and in streaming web clips as well. Vsync 3D settings don't seem to affect web streaming videos or video clips on PC, on ATI cards. If you want no-tearing with MadVR + Aero off on ATI, my experience is you need to use Full Screen Exclusive mode. (D3D fullscreen option for EVR-CP and MPC-HC)
I just use Aero on myself to not get tearing when watching streaming online video clips (youtube for instance), and FSE with MadVR.

Ok so I just tested 0.58, here are some results (Win7, ATI 5670):
- Refresh rate switch works for me BUT;
- The first time I tested, I went windowed mode after fullscreen (MPC-HC is set to go straight into fullscreen), after a refresh rate change, and started getting lots of dropped frames in the statistics. Going back to FSE would be smooth, but then back to windowed mode would start the dropped frames again
- The next few times, I couldn't reproduce this behaviour with the stats BUT with the Reclock tearing test, I could see that it was dropping frames in windowed mode
So to recap:
Refresh rate change, then going from FSE to windowed = lots of drops (whether or not it shows in the stats)
If there is no refresh rate change, I get smooth video in windowed mode
The other problem that I've been having for some time (not just v0.58) but no one else has mentioned:
- Quitting MPC-HC while in FSE - the player disappears (window closes) but the process lives on & the audio keeps playing (it doesn't loop - just keeps continuing). I have to kill the process. My FSE settings are: 8 buffered, don't flush for everything
I'll try see if the glitch hack changes anything.

With the glitch hack, I still experience the behaviour 2 posts ago.
BUT I did notice that with the hack in place (or maybe its just the flush & wait (Sleep) setting), switching between windowed and exclusive modes is a lot faster, so I might just leave it enabled, even though presentation time goes from 0.03 ms to 0.8 ms :)

Not really seeing any big differences between glitch hack enabled/disabled.
The only thing that has any real effect on playback for me is that I need the "present only one frame at a time" option enabled when refresh rate is greater than the framerate (25p@50Hz, 30p@60Hz) and the option has to be disabled when the refresh rate matches the framerate. (24p@24Hz, 25p downclocked to 24Hz) Once that is done I get smooth playback.
Oh, and flushing after copy to backbuffer must be disabled since the new rendering path was implemented.
Is there anyone else using MadVR with a 500-series Nvidia card here? It seems (most?) people running older cards don't have any problems.

One small question... resetting stats is CTRL+R, right? Quite annoying, since this is also MPC-HC's default for reset rate. Sometimes when I press the combination, it restarts the movie. :/
So for now I've changed MPC-HC's default "Reset Rate" combination to avoid the collision.
Is it possible that you'll change your reset stats to CTRL+ALT+R? Would make it like EVR-CP and EVR-Sync.Well, it seems that PEBKAC. :) I pressed CTRL+E sometimes (light was off, in my defense). Anyway, I still think CTRL+ALT+R would make it more compatible w/ the other renderers' key bindings.

Frame rate change working really well. I am very impressed how smooth 23p can be with madvr! I am particularly sensitive to low frame rates/flicker & judder, but it is lovely an smooth even with pans. I did see someone say that the last refresh rate is kept on exit - why is this again?
A tip: i am using an ati/amd card, and if you set the output in Windows to duplicate displays (ie. mirror the output to tv and amp, via hdmi and dvi) the frame rate change has trouble - presumably cos some refresh rates arn't supported by the amp in my case. if you extend the desktop rather than duplicate - it all works fine.

* The queue (playing 1080p23.976 @ 60Hz):
1/ With 3rd flush setting = flush & wait: render queue: 2-3, back buffer queue: 0-2, preset queue: 0-1
2/ With 3rd flush setting = no flush: render queue: 7-8, back buffer queue: 7-8, preset queue: 7-8

I use a NVidia GeForce GTX 280 with latest drivers and a custom (forced) resolution of 1920x1200@48.034Hz for playing 24p content, with the help of ReClock.
With my configuration, using the new exclusive rendering path, there are presentation glitches, even with the "Windows 7/Vista hack" enabled. Each time a presentation glitch occurs, this results in a slight discontinuity during playback, i.e. a dropped/duplicated frame (confirmed with ReClock's tearing test bar). There is one discontinuity every two-five seconds or so, however the presentation glitches counter sometimes increase by more than one each time this happens.
If I increase the "how many video frames shall be pre-presented in advance" option, it does not increase the frequency of discontinuities ; however, they become more obvious. For example if I select 16 then ReClock's tearing bar behavior becomes very strange, as it seems to "slow down" for a dozen frames or so each times a discontinuity occurs.
Most of the time it seems to be duplicating frames, since the bar doesn't jump ; it just pauses. However there seems to be frame drops sometimes (I suppose it has to make up the time for duplicated frames at some point).
The old rendering path is working perfectly fine.
Anything I can do to help pinpoint the cause?

The automatic resolution changer behaves strangely.
I have to add both "1080p23, 1080p24" and it sets 23.976Hz but nothing happens if I add only one of them (either 23 or 24).

The automatic resolution changer doesn't seem to work for me.
I added the 1080p23 to my list (nothing else) and the madVR (0.58) GUI says it's "valid". I can change the resolution to 1920x1080@23Hz (actually 23.976Hz) manually from CCC. But when I open a file which is called 1080p23.m2ts (it's a 1080p 23.976fps video from a BD), nothing happens, my display remains in 1920x1200@60Hz (~59.95Hz according to every softwares).
(Yes, I enabled the exclusive mode and it really switches to exclusive mode for full screen playback...)
May be it's because I use DisplayPort instead of HDMI...?Nah, doesn't work for me as well, and I use HDMI. 1080p23 is (of course) available for my second monitor (hdtv).

Read my edited post again and try adding "1080p23, 1080p24". (Sorry, I just found the solution right after I posted the original text, so I decided to edit...)
For me that mode changing does work (after disabling that feature in mpc).
I have added:
1920x1200p60, 1920x1200p59, 1920x1200p50, 1920x1200p48, 1920x1200p47
But I do not have all those resolutions added in the nvidia control center (it does not allow me to add 60 and 59 or 48 and 47), does it matter?

NOTE: This is for people who are confused with the intention of the automatic refresh rate changer, not the problems that are occurring in functionality.
I think the purpose of the automatic mode changer is a bit unclear.
Here's basically what it does:
1) Resolution(p)FrameRate [in mode changer field]
2) madVR will match whatever FrameRate is defined in the mode changer field to the CLOSEST UPPER LIMIT of the VALID refresh rates that the DISPLAY supports.
Example:
madVR mode changer field: 1080p24, 720p23
Valid refresh rates for display: 24Hz, 60Hz
Default refresh rate: 60Hz
Scenario 1:
Video Fed: 1080p24
Output by madVR: Refresh rate of display set to 24Hz (perfect frame rate and refresh rate sync)
Scenario 2:
Video Fed: 1080p23 (1080p, 23.976fps)
Output by madVR: Refresh rate of display set to 24Hz (madVR syncs to closest refresh rate, imperfect sync however better than 60Hz)
Scenario 3:
Video Fed: 720p25
Output by madVR: Refresh rate of display set to 60Hz (madVR syncs to upper limit refresh rate (24Hz is too low in this case), imperfect sync)

I was confused about the automatic mode changer so i didn't touch it...
Thanks for that explanation, but what do you mean by "your Display supports"? My display has no problem with all those refresh rates, working fine when setting them up in nvidia control panel, but do I need to do that to make madVR mode switching work?

My setup:
Win 7 x64, Ati HD 5770, CCC 11.2
MPC-HC, Re-Clock, ffdshow, madVR 0.58
I tried various flush settings with or without the glitch hack, media fps always match screen refresh rate, i always get:
- 0 dropped
- 0 delayed
- 0 glitches
I never had problems with any version, even with 0.57.
I've noticed that with the glitch hack on i don't get strange artifacs that happen above and to the left of the screen when switching from dark to light frames.
From a withe scene to a black scene i get something like this without the glitch hack.

Just back from holiday and I have gone from .49 straight to .58. What fun!! I'm using MC16 and MPC-HC for testing with FSE mode on a secondary HDTV. For MPC-HC, whether I use reclock or not, I get perfect playback when setting monitor refresh to 23.976 and playback of 23.976fps material (SD or HD). When using Reclock, I set the refresh to 24Hz, same perfect playback.
I've tried fiddling with the "glitch hack" path and it seems that on some movies, with glitch hack turned off, on rare occasions, I can see a slight judder on panning scenes. But it does not always happen and there is nothing reflected in the stats (queues full, 0 dropped/glitches).
In MC16 (see my post on the beta thread), the results are not quite as solid without using Reclock (using the jRiver Audio Renderer). With monitor refresh matching movie fps, I still get a noticeable dropped frame every couple of minutes. With more changes coming on both fronts, probably best to wait for more testing before forming any hard conclusions at this point.
I current have the presentation/back buffers at 8, using flush|flush wait|no|no.

@madshi
thank you for your great work. With your version 0.58 it is the first time i've always smooth playback. And I'm using madvr since the first versions.
Responsible is the possibility of automatic refresh rate changing.
What I'm missing is the possibility to change the refresh rate automatically back to the former settings too.
For example my TV normally works on 60 hz. After watching 24p material, the refresh rate "stucks" on 24 hz until I am watching material with another refresh rate or I'm switching the refresh rate manually -(.
Im using Potplayer with madvr on win7 x32 with a NV 240 GT.

I've ran into a new issue with madVR . It seems to have been from upgrading my ATI Crossfire drivers to 11.4 although I'm not 100% on this, its just the only change I can think of.
I can no longer run 1080p video at an acceptable standard, anything up to 720p runs fine in windowed mode, but when entering full screen exclusive it suffers the same as 1080p stuff. Basically its just stuttering constantly.
Its reporting hundreds of dropped frames and numerous presentation glitches. I've tried changing to all scaling algorithms, but no difference, as well as testing all sorts of combinations (including the glitch hack).
I could also see that when playing video that is skipping, the numbers for all the queue values are constantly changing, where as on videos that play smoothly, they sit at the same value. Whether that's relevant, I don't know.
Also worth noting that this occurs in both MPC-HC and Zoom Player.
Sorry for my poor explanation, I'm not so up on the technical side.

resetting stats is CTRL+R, right? Quite annoying, since this is also MPC-HC's default for reset rate. Sometimes when I press the combination, it restarts the movie. :/
So for now I've changed MPC-HC's default "Reset Rate" combination to avoid the collision.
Is it possible that you'll change your reset stats to CTRL+ALT+R? Would make it like EVR-CP and EVR-Sync.
I plan to make the keyboard shortcuts adjustable sooner or later. Until then I'll rather just leave them as they are.
Hadn't found how to enable old path in 0.58, tested it in 0.50. Yes, old exclusive mode is better than new for 25fps on 60Hz. Judder with old is regular while with new it's jerky.
Ok, thx.
Bug report:
I'm getting 100% CPU usage and GUI freeze (audio continues) running v0.58, playing any type of content by going from a player window on monitor #1 to fullscreen on monitor #2.
This is with the default settings, Win7 32bit, NVIDIA 450GT.
Tested with Zoom Player, with the "Advanced Options / System - Fullscreen to Monitor" set to "2" and pressing Alt+Enter several times in a row.
Here's the log, I hope it captured ok as I had to kill the task:

Thanks, that log helps. Will see if I can fix this.

That's a simple bug. madVR simply doesn't do nothing when only one mode is listed. Will be fixed in the next build.
New log file (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QE7O9V40)with CRTL-J active
According to the log madVR doesn't go fullscreen because of this:
madVR window [madVR] "madVR" {1280,0,3200,1080}
covered by explorer.exe window [Shell_TrayWnd] {-2,1022,1282,1052}
The tray window (which I think is the window where all the tray icons and the clock etc are in) seems to overlap the madVR rendering window. Please double check your dual monitor setup. It seems that your primary and secondary monitors overlap ever so slightly?
Play video in windowed mode, pause video, lock screen with Windows Key + L, unlock Windows and replay video....dropped frames with no fix. If I go into exclusive mode by double-clicking it's smooth again.
I'll put that on my to do list, but not with very high priority right now.
Here is a fresh log from my 120Hz madvr failure issue.
Thanks. I'll need a log from you with this special madVR build:
http://madshi.net/madVR120Hz.zip

Going back to FSE would be smooth, but then back to windowed mode would start the dropped frames again
I guess you're using Aero? Please check whether the "composition rate" shown in the madVR OSD (Ctrl + J) is correct in windowed mode, when you get stuttering.
The other problem that I've been having for some time (not just v0.58) but no one else has mentioned:
- Quitting MPC-HC while in FSE - the player disappears (window closes) but the process lives on & the audio keeps playing (it doesn't loop - just keeps continuing). I have to kill the process.
Yeah, I have that problem, too. It appears to be a bug in MPC-HC.
I think I'm seeing a bug with the autochanger with DVDs I'm always seeing 25fps and autochanger setting refresh to 50hz.
VOBs played directly are fine and the autochanger does what it's suppose to.
Using MPC-HT with qdvd.dll from this thread to play DVD.
What does the madVR OSD (Ctr+J) say about the movie frame rate? If I understand you correctly, it shows 25fps although the DVD is something else? What is the DVD? NTSC? The problem is in the splitter then. madVR switches refresh rates based on the frame rate reported by the splitter. If the splitter reports a wrong movie frame rate then there's nothing madVR can do about it.
Windowed mode is being screwy and the glitch hack isn't helping...
It's generally screwy? In all madVR versions? Or just in newer ones? A few more details would be helpful.
I use a NVidia GeForce GTX 280 with latest drivers and a custom (forced) resolution of 1920x1200@48.034Hz for playing 24p content, with the help of ReClock.

The new rendering path appears to still have some problems if the display refresh rate is higher than the movie framerate. I still have a couple of ideas on how to fix this. Please try the next madVR build again, once it's out (maybe later today or tomorrow).
Yes, it does matter. You should only list modes that really exist. madVR can not create non-existing modes, madVR can only switch to modes that do exist. So if you list non-existing modes, madVR may try to switch to them, which will result in a mode switching failure. The practical effect will be that madVR will either not switch at all, or maybe Windows will switch to a "random" other mode instead.
This is for people who are confused with the intention of the automatic refresh rate changer, not the problems that are occurring in functionality.
I think the purpose of the automatic mode changer is a bit unclear.
Here's basically what it does:
1) Resolution(p)FrameRate [in mode changer field]
2) madVR will match whatever FrameRate is defined in the mode changer field to the CLOSEST UPPER LIMIT of the VALID refresh rates that the DISPLAY supports.
madVR does not simply use the "closest upper limit". The algorithm used by madVR has many steps and tries to intelligently find the best display mode match for any movie. Just to name an example: For a 24.000fps movie, madVR would prefer a display refresh rate of 60.000Hz over 50.000Hz.
Thanks for that explanation, but what do you mean by "your Display supports"? My display has no problem with all those refresh rates, working fine when setting them up in nvidia control panel, but do I need to do that to make madVR mode switching work?
Just tell madVR all the modes which (1) are available in the NVidia control panel *and* (2) which you think make sense to be used for movie playback. Leave the rest to madVR, it will automatically pick the best mode for any movie you play.
Preferably always use the native resolution of your display. Don't bother listing modes with non-native resolution - unless you have to use non-native resolution to get a specific refresh rate working. E.g. if your display does not support 1080p60 but does support 720p60 then it may make sense to tell madVR that 720p60 is a supported mode. Then at least you can playback 60p content fluidly, although with downscaled resolution.
I've noticed that with the glitch hack on i don't get strange artifacs that happen above and to the left of the screen when switching from dark to light frames.
From a withe scene to a black scene i get something like this without the glitch hack.
Never heard about such a problem before. But good to know that the glitch hack fixes it, although I don't know why... :)
Movie must be playing all the time.
Go to exclusive mode. Move the mouse afterwards.
Now, without moving the mouse, go to windowed mode and back to exclusive. The seek bar appears and doesn't go away until you move the mouse again.
Doesn't happen for me. Would look to fix this, but first I must be able to reproduce it.
Any plans to support MPC-HC x64?
:search:
thank you for your great work. With your version 0.58 it is the first time i've always smooth playback.
:)
Yeah, has been requested before. Might add it as an option to a future version.
Please double check that anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering etc are all set to "application decides" (or however that option is named exactly). Do not force anti-aliasing or anisotropic filtering, that doesn't improve image quality for madVR one bit, but it may lower performance quite a bit.

Note: Since the glitch hack appears to bring improvements to some people, while not making things worse for anybody else, I'll force it on in the next build and remove the option. If anybody opposes to this, now's the time to let me know... :)

This happens to me all the time and is reproducable for me. I double click a file to open it and it begins to play in windowed mode. I then tell the media player to go full screen which triggers FSE, and the seek bar is there and stays there until I move the mouse. If I open the media player first and then open the file through the media player's interface, the seek bar doesn't appear when going full screen as normal. (until you hover over the bottom of the screen)

Yep, I have this problem too. Had it pretty much ever since FSE was introduced, been used to moving the mouse (as i watch only on a monitor, so it's never been a big deal) to fix it. It only gets stuck on for me when i first load up the video then goto fullscreen. If i load up the video, goto fullscreen, goto windowed (moving the mouse or not) then back again, it's actually not there at all then.

Doesn't happen for me. Where is your mouse cursor located when you tell the media player to go full screen? Is the mouse cursor under the video window? Try moving the mouse cursor above to the top of the screen before going fullscreen. Does that "fix" the problem? Not saying you should have to do that. Just trying to figure out where the problem is coming from...

It appears to be random. It doesn't seem to matter if the mouse is over the video, or if the mouse is used to set to to fullscreen as compared to alt+enter. Sometimes it sticks, sometimes it doesn't show up at all.
EDIT: Although now after i tested several more times, it barely did it... (I couldn't get it to do it once when the mouse was above actually, like you suggested, and it only did it once in a good 12+ tries on various videos since, and only when it wasn't above, hmm. And it doesn't seem to be if the mouse moves much or not b4 going to fullscreen, it just simply wouldn't stick when i'd put the mouse above the video, if i put it off to the side, it might.)

Ok, I'll see if I can fix it without being able to reproduce it.

Thanks for all the effort, madshi
I have a 25p movie, and have to use ReClock to speed it down to 24 fps. The problem is that since madVR detects from the source filter, it still switches my display to 50p (I have set auto switch for this). I doubt there's a way to get the movie fps from ReClock (which would be ideal), so if that's not possible, maybe a quick way to disable auto-switching (on the madVR system tray menu maybe)? Cause right now I have to open madVR settings, go to the auto change section, and then delete all modes manually. After that I have to put them in manually again.

@Andy, I had asked James months ago to communicate Reclock's FPS changes to madVR somehow, but he was quite unwilling. The proper solution is for all you Reclock users who want to use automatic display mode / refresh rate changing to bug James about this. I don't really feel like adding a bunch of extra features to work around Reclock being so non-communicative. It would be much cleaner and better for everyone if Reclock would open up a little bit and allow other filters to inform themselves about what Reclock is doing exactly.
