This is normal, the game destroys the Direct3D device when it changes the resolution so madVR fails.

You cannot do anything like this with madVR running, e.g. sleeping the computer has a similar result.

Actually sleeping the computer (or at least, having the monitors turned off and therefore video as well) doesn't result in that. If there isn't buggy code for the architecture in the driver related to this when you wake it up again you simply have to double-click back to windowed mode and then again back to full screen to reset it. I believe this also works for full screen windowed mode, but I doi t for full screen exclusive mode.

With my R9-280X it worked, when I first got the RX480 it didn't (possibly requiring a cold restart of the computer), but now with 16.12.1 it works again.

I do not find a good setup to see old remastered movies 2k to 4k. They are very noisy. Can somebody help me?

I'm using the latest version of madvr with this configuration:

luma: very high
chroma: let madvr decide
upscaling/downscaling: let madvr decide.

Without any upscaling refinement

I would appreciate any help.

Hi,

When looking at HDR (10 bits, HEVC) video on MadVr(Jriver), I get a black screen.
My display is full 4k / HDR / HDCP 2.2 compliant and my graphic card too (Nvidia GTX1070).

Is there any recommanded settings or user guide (MadVr/Nvidia control pannel) for watching a HDR video on my HTPC ?

I tried it. It looks a little better. But the render time is high. 40ms. Is a remux file of 30 gb with bit rate 41.6mb/s. I use gtx 1080 g1 oc.

No, I never use over NNEDI3 64 for chroma upscaling, and that is for SD where the performance hit is almost non-existent as any improvement is unnoticable. NNEDI3 32 would be my max for HD, especially remastered content.

I meant NNEDI3 128 for luma doubling to 4K, but of course that depends on which GPU you have. NNEDI3 128 runs at about the same speed as NGU veryHigh for me so I hoped you could run it as well. I can run NNEDI3 256 for 1080p24 -> 2160 so I might be overestimating what is possible. :o

Fired up the 30th anniversary of Transformers the Movie tonight (It looks amazing) and I'm quite happy with super-xbr 150 AR
being used for chroma upscaling for this type of content.

There's a number of scenes like this and they all show similar benefit. NGU doesn't do too good here, thinning lines and being softer than super-xbr 150 AR (even NGU very high SR4!)
Where as super-xbr 150 is keeping the same line thickness but giving it some nice line darkening. Can post more scenes if anyone would like to see them.

Plasma tvs for example has much higher motion resolution than lcds or oleds and so they will show a sharper image.

You are not maximizing madvrs upscaling algorithms on an LCD or OLED lol
300 lines is sub DVD resolution in motion.
Plasma tvs can show all 1080 lines from Blu Ray content

Super-xbr 150 is the sharpest between all these options but I find that Jinc is still a great performer when you consider that it doesn't need much resources. NGU low could be a great deal too.

Yes, be careful with Bilateral, it can give you the best, but also the worst results depending on the situation.

Super-xbr is much more polyvalent, with values of 100-150.
I use NGU-Med at the moment (or NGU-High on new versions), because it is overall sharper and cleaner... and it is cold now where I live :)

But in this scene, I find NGU high a lot better than Super-xbr 150, even NGU low is better. The pearls are more defined with NGU.

In the screens by Neo-XP I actually think BilateralSharp looks best. Compare the red on the neck. All other algorithms seem to bleed the red into the surrounding skin colour. I'd be interested in how reconstruction soft performed in that image.

Look again...the reds are bleeding together in Bilateral and there is no separation between the bright and dark red beads.

Yes they are. But the red on the neck bleeds into the skin colour (the red part slightly to the left between the two black parts). It is a very noticeable artefact imho.

Titan x Pascal Is more powerfull. Significantly more render output processors 96 vs 64 and more cuda cores 3,072 vs 2,560...

Gtx 1080 + madvr with new movies, like guardians of the galaxy, NGU It does very well. The colors and details look great on my tv oled 4k tv...

Image upscaling luma + chroma NGU very high
Crop black bars
Upscaling refinement enhance detail 1.5
Others option let madvr decide
Render time 26 ms

madshi, can you please make a small change in switching the debanding on/off by keyboard? I've requested this around a year ago and you've answered that you will take a look at it but it might take some time. So I'm just meekly reminding about it and begging you to implement this during your current work on making the UI a bit more streamlined:

I usually use either a high debanding or no debanding during several files in a series. If I'd switch through GUI, it's all plain and simple - the radiobutton is always at "high" position and I can just toggle only the checkbox. Obviously I want to speed up things by using keyboard shortcuts, but the different story begins here. For example, I start from debanding at "high" but off and want to turn it on. So I press Ctlr-Alt-Shift-A twice (OSD shows off->high) and then hit F2 to save. Everything goes as expected. Afterwards, I want to switch it back off and repeat the same sequence, OSD showing high->off. But now it turns out that not only the checkbox was toggled - the radiobutton was also set to "low" value, so next time I'd need to press Ctlr-Alt-Shift-A four times, going all the way through off->low->medium->high. I humbly ask you to change this behaviour so that the radiobutton won't get reset from its initial value if the final result of keypresses is "off" at the moment of releasing all keys in the shortcut combination. It's not that I'm too bothered with two extra keypresses - I just want to get used to the same keypress sequence for toggling debanding on and off and pay no attention to its initial state or OSD.

Jesus Christ. By that reasoning we shouldn't be using screenshots at all.. Nothing matters because everyone's display is different. What a load of tripe!

The results are consistent across everyone's display regardless of whether you see a difference or not! The better the display and the better optimised it is the more obvious the changes will be.

Different displays don't invalidate screen shots at all. Might as well tell madshi to stop taking screenshots based on the above nonsense.

DXVA scaling should be avoided. Try using Jinc for everything and report back.

Nothing you have ticked really changes much of anything, certainly nothing you'd notice unless your using debanding or DXVA even then it's questionable.
If you want full quality like I said only a few pages back, untick the lot that's what most here have done unless they have slow/dated hardware.

Thks, hablas espaņol? Disabling everything, the render time goes up by 3 or 4 ms (29 ms max total render time for 2k to 4k with NGU Very high), it's fine for me.
How do you use it? everything disabled too? My gtx 1080 g1 cries!

Quick questiin about dithering...

On 10-bit tv screens with full screen D3D11 exclusive mode is better without dithering? Or is it always better to use ordered dithering?

For that reason I ask. I read in a forum that with tv 10-bit panel + d3d11 in fullscreen exclusive mode disable it. What happens if I use it disabled? TV breaks or something?



If you disable dithering you are losing information like details and color transition... also dithering prevents banding that can happen even in 10bit

DXVA scaling should be avoided. Try using Jinc for everything and report back.

Thanks, unticking "use DXVA chroma upscaling when doing native DXVA decoding" did the trick!

OK after several days of testing picture quality from Blu Ray content on my KRP-500M i have come to the conclusion that NGU for chroma upscaling goes overboard with sharpness.
Picture is too messy with NGU and the resolution looks reduced.
Back to NNEDI3

i have allways thought that there was too much noise in the picture with madvr compared to regular broadcast but i couldnt figure out what setting it was until some days ago
it seems that i have missed two important settings with "Error Diffusion".
i have allways used Error Diffusion 2 with "use color noise" and "change dither for every frame" as both of them was ticked default.
unticked both of them and there goes the annoying noise that has been in the picture.
if its noise now its only there because the movie has it.

i must say that the picture is so good now with Blu Ray when i have found the right combination of settings that i must rewatch every movie :)

Final settings of what i think maximizes a 9G Kuro Plasma for 1080P Blu Ray content with madvr.

Chroma upscaling: NNEDI3 128
No SuperRes filter (leave it unticked)

"Image upscaling" is not active here with 1080P content on a 1080P display so it doesnt matter what settings you have there.

Rendering:
Smooth Motion Enable (Allways)

Dithering:
Error Diffusion- Option 2
Untick "use colored noise" and "change dither for every frame"

Thats it
THE cleanest/sharpest and most neutral picture i have ever seen on this tv.

Edit:
9G Kuros with Pure Drive and mostly the KRPs are sharp as hell from start so any other sharpening crap as image enhancements or upscaling refinement isnt needed.
Remember 1080 lines of native motion resolution ;)

NNEDI3 128 is OTT, 64 max. The difference isn't noticeable unless you've got hawk eye vision and eats all the power.

Disabling everything, the render time goes up by 3 or 4 ms (29 ms max total render time for 2k to 4k with NGU Very high), it's fine for me.
How do you use it? everything disabled too? My gtx 1080 g1 cries!

I run with everything disabled. If you use subtitles enabling "optimize subtitle quality for performance instead of quality" can have a noticeable impact on performance without a significant hit to subtitle quality, but that is the only one I could imagine using with a GTX 1080.

On 10-bit tv screens with full screen D3D11 exclusive mode is better without dithering? Or is it always better to use ordered dithering?

As CarlosCaco said you are simply losing information with dithering disabled. Ordered dithering, or even random if you want to eliminate the performance hit as much as possible, but never disabled. Disabled is only for testing.

About dithering: It was pretty clear to me.

I've been trying out various configuration alternatives. With these options I obtained the best results in the image quality. (Definition, noise, sharpness, etc.) Always in 2k to 4k upscaling. (NNEDI 256 neurons is far away for me).
Another question... What is the limit on the best render time? 30, 40 ms...?

Sort of. Use the Plex for Kodi addon and install Kodi DSPlayer. I'm not sure Plex for Kodi works with DSPlayer, though. DSPlayer needs SMB shares.

To avoid dropped frames and/or presentation glitches the sum of the average stats "deinterlace" (if present), "rendering", and "present" must be a bit below the frame time, Y, in the line "v-sync [X] ms, frame [Y] ms". For example, progressive 29.97 fps video has a new frame every 33.37 ms so "rendering"+"present" needs to be a few ms below 33.37 ms. However, 23.976 fps video only has a new frame every 41.71 ms so you can use more demanding settings with lower frame rate video. Exactly how far below the frame time is required for glitch free playback is dependent on the system but a few milliseconds is usually sufficient.

Correct, though some dropped frames, delayed frames, or presentation glitches on startup or after seeking are OK.

But in this scene, I find NGU high a lot better than Super-xbr 150, even NGU low is better. The pearls are more defined with NGU.

Defined isn't the word I'd use, more like over brightened or vibrant/dynamic. Personally I'm not a fan of what it does for chroma, it doesn't look that good to me in either animated or real world content.

madshi, can you allow 'chroma upscaling algorithm parameter' increase & decrease change super-xbr sharpness settings? madVR says there are no parameters.

yes. I saw it. I use ctrl+r to reset stats. 1 year ago I use madvr for the first time, but just now i getting a good idea how it works. Is amazong!
The only thing I can not do is that the old movies look good, without noise.

My TV (LG OLED EF9500) has an excellent player (LG Smartshare) but, very limited. (No internal sub ej) But the quality of reproduction is very good, especially in old movies.
