No, I get this problem on my 2080 ti even if I match the resolution (for no upscaling). The rendering times are very very low but the problem persists.
The only way to avoid stuttering is to enable FSE.
This was not a problem on my 1080 which was the exact same vendor and model (asus strix).
Try using something other than NGU for chroma and image upscaling.

Stuttering with cubic chroma and xbr scaling as well.

Adaptive is perfectly adequate, unless you want to heat your room.

Adaptive is perfectly adequate, unless you want to heat your room.
Not in every case tho, adaptive makes rendering spikes in the avg stats and max stats.
ryrynz
13th November 2018, 20:48
Who cares about the stats really? They're a means to an end. As long as it falls under frame time for every frame and the noise/heat is acceptable to you then you're fine, how hard the card is operating at isn't that obvious from the stats alone.
Adaptive is perfectly adequate as Nev said, Prefer maximum performance is clock speed and power consumption overkill as Adaptive does a really good job of sorting the right clock speeds for the job.
If you're pushing ~90% of your frame time you may run into frame drops though.

I encountered a weird problem: when using MadVR (with any player) + dual screen, everytime I minimize/restore the player on main screen, the playback will stutter for a bit. It doesn't happen on 2nd mon, or if I only connect one monitor.
does anyone have clue how to fix it? The OS is Win764.
Thanks in advance.

I think it's something madshi was going to look at sometime in the future, not much you could do other than try changing the power mode for your graphics adapter and perhaps increase/decrease the GPU buffer.
Try playing with a few options and see what helps if anything, do defaults still do this?

Yes power management mode is set to adaptive. I have tried all the usual solutions and nothing fixes the stuttering besides FSE. A couple of other users have mentioned the same issue on their new 2080 ti cards as well. Is there anyone who can get stutter free playback on their 2080 ti without FSE? If so please share your settings and I will try them at my end too.

Probably those Windows notification settings.. Disable Focus Assist, disable Automatic rules and all 'notifications & actions' options.

Boys gotta play, nice to know. The good reason is knowing if they've finally delivered an update worthy of replacing 385.28 :P

I have no problems with the new driver for HDR. However, 3D is broken and only for one player:
PowerDVD is fine.
MPCHC is fine.
MPCBE reduces the player to the upper left corner of the display.
This is not the first time I've seen big differences between MPC HC/BE.
All players are nightlies or latest version as of today fwiw.
HD Audio driver is still junk regarding auto switching stereo to 7.1 in Windows Audio properties and vice versa which does affect playback of certain audios but more importantly, desktop usage vs video mode. I replaced the driver with the last working version in the install package and am finding it routine with every update. Hoping one day they will fix this audio driver problem along with adding an RGB 10bit mode which is why I keep upgrading the driver and testing. My advice is roll back to the previous driver and fix the audio (if you care) or live with the new 3D problem that MPCBE may or may not deal with and fix the audio in this latest driver (I'm going to) or install 385.28 and fuggetaboutit.
ryrynz
15th November 2018, 02:15
Build 4166 may fix that perhaps, check nightlies in a few hours, also BE has differed quite a bit from HC for some time now so differences aren't unexpected.

@all, I have two questions.
- Is there a way to expand the UI at least vertically ?
- I am currently looking into my profiles to maybe find some optimizations especially for UHD and I was wondering about the rendering modes !!
Is flush-flush&wait (loop)-don't flush-don't flush still the recommended setting for UHD ? Unfortunately there are too many combinations possible so I thought I better ask.
Thx
ryrynz
15th November 2018, 11:07
You mean the madVR settings window? That can't be changed.
Flush and wait (loop) looks to place slightly more burden on the GPU, hence the slightly lower render times. Defaults should be best.
Optimizations would be things like the trade quality for performance options or lowering the buffers.

Years ago on Win7 I had a little tool installed that made all windows sizeable but I unfortunately don' t remember the name - found others but they don't work so well.
When I set "after copy to backbuffer" to "flush" render times drop here on my system by ca. 2 ms !! However, I am worried that this creates other problems in the overall performance.
Guess I have to do some night sessions to further test this. Madshi is currently not active here, right ?

I am using FSE after a long time and I noticed that it shows "composition rate" at 60hz even though I have a 24p video playing at 24hz refresh rate. Should composition rate really matter in FSE? Is there some setting I am missing somewhere please?

I'm wondering about the same myself.

It is a display bug as far as I am aware. You would get lots of frame drops and the likes if it was really at 60. I think there was a fix but I was too lazy to try and find it once I got FSE working again, I don't use it inside KODI anyway.

i've had that issue myself with my AMD card, where the composition rate didnt match and i was getting frame drop which is very odd for an AMD card, i tried what I thought was everything to resolve, even a system restore but I couldnt fix it. I finally managed to get it sorted by completely removing MADVR and installing it in a new location. i tried this first by moving location and using settings.bin but this didnt work.
its easy to test though, just run the uninstall MADVR but leave the folder intact, reinstall it in a new location from scratch, if it doesnt work go back to the old location and you've only lost a few minutes.
This is more likely a driver issue though but its doing exactly the same thing that happened to me.

This might be a bit of a silly question to the more experienced of you users, but it makes me nervous - so here goes it:
Using Windows 7 Home Premium, is it possible to make any changes in Windows (excluding madVR's own settings, MPC-HC's settings, LAV Filter's settings, graphics card settings and changing the Windows Theme), that will affect how madVR displays the picture and how the picture looks on the TV, using madVR? :confused:
:thanks:

aero and color management should do that.

FSE should ignore the desktop composition but this is a hard topic because there is no FSE on win10 so hard to say there.
overlay rendering is ignoring the composition rate and i'm unsure of windowed d3d11 10 bit which is a special mode on it's own.

Yeah, I never touch that. This PC is completely dedicated to madVR and I never make any changes (at least not on purpose) - all I do is open the Windows Explorer, transfer the file, close the Explorer, mark the file, click Enter, play the file, program ends, move the file to the Recycling Bin and emptying it.

Do you guys overclock your GPU’s? I have a VAIO with an old AMD Radeon 5470 that I use to watch stuff on in bed. I wanted to use super-xbr for chroma and upscale using Jinc but was falling short a few ms on some videos so I would have to fallback chroma to Jinc also. So I decided to do a slight overclock to squeeze that little bit more performance. I’m in happy day’s now lol but don’t usually overclock. Temps are the same though and all looks good. Guess I’m paranoid of damaging something lol. It’s old but a lovely laptop. People mention there cards and settings but never mention if they’ve done anything to there cards or not so I guess I was just curious.

All I do is push the "power control" to +20% on my factory OC'd R9 270X... without this I would have to dial NGU back a notch... the card starts to throttle to quickly without the power control pushed to +20%

I overclock a lot, on a 2080 Ti now, but ideally I de-volt for madVR. I don't need the full power for my ideal settings so running lower volts/clocks saves power/heat. I have never had issues damaging a video card by overclocking but madVR is one of the most intensive things you can run, if running close to 100% GPU usage, so make sure cooling is sufficient.
100% usage can use very different amounts of power with different loads, madVR is not Furmark but it takes more power than most games.

Kinda silly not to overclock the memory at the least. If you don't need the extra performance to unlock a particular option then just leave things as they are unless you're gaming also.
Asmodian
18th November 2018, 09:38
True, madVR really likes a memory overclock too.

True, madVR really likes a memory overclock too.
Why is that?
Asmodian
18th November 2018, 20:07
It gets a lot of rendering performance with a memory overclock, some workloads get faster with a memory overclock and some don't. madVR gets a lot faster with memory speed, at least on Maxwell, Pascal, and Turing.
Edit: I think it is the improved latency that is the benefit, not bandwidth, because it has a similar effect on GPU's with vastly different amounts of memory bandwidth.

I noticed I could use higher madVR settings when I overclocked my nVidia. I was using EVGA Precision and my card is EVGA fwiw. Problem is, the overclock settings do not survive a reboot and I got sick of re-overclocking constantly. Took a while to figure out why high madVR settings worked one day but not the next too. What the heck were they thinking when designing that software? What do you guys use to overclock nVidia that survives a reboot? TIA.

MSI Afterburner has an option to load the overclock on reboot, works fine for me. I would be surprised if the EVGA thing didn't also have that option somewhere.
Asmodian
18th November 2018, 23:37
MSI Afterburner works on EVGA cards too, and I know it has a little button that applies the overclock after a reboot. I am almost certain EVGA Precision also has this option but I like Afterburner a lot more.
Edit: I had forgotten to hit post and agree with nevcairiel. ;)

Installed MSI AB and overclocked GPU and memory. Survives a reboot. Thanks guys. Upped some madVR settings. So far, so good. I'll be perfectly honest. For me, it always takes time to make sure upped settings work for a wide range of titles. Right now I've only upped 2160p and checked one of my larger RIPs - The Hunger Games. I went from Scaling chroma AA med to NGU Sharp high and played for 10mins. Didn't miss a beat and rendering time is within spec. I know the jump is drastic but I had it at AA med to quite down CPU fan, not because it struggled to decode. Now CPU fan is quiet with higher setting. I guess clocking the GPU up takes some pressure off the CPU? I'll know in time if I exceeded my settings when used with other RIPs. Hope not. Anyway, pretty happy. Thanks for the reco.

Should be negligable CPU difference between those two.
Also NGU sharp isn't exactly an upgrade for chroma, compare first.

I created a custom 2160p 23.976 refresh rate for my gtx 1080 using the madvr optimizer. It works great in MPC-HC. However when I use this refresh rate with Kodi 18 or PowerDVD (I use these programs for some of my BD isos for full menu access) this refresh rate is noticeably stuttering every few seconds. Any idea why that would be happening?

Sorry, figured that myself, so I deleted that post. The wrong device was selected as my TV. Previously it wouldn't show me the right device in the device list, but now it did show it for the first time. The refresh rate change feature now works for me.
--------
However, I have another question. I have thousands of both dropped and repeated frames and presentation glitches (the amount of those varies depending on the video), but I don't see any actual problems at all. Render times are OK. The refresh rate matches video. Should I worry about that?
There are no presentation glitches in the exclusive mode, but I don't like it, so I guess it's fine that I have thousands of presentation glitches if it doesn't affect my perception of the material in any way?
As for dropped/repeated frames, there is equal amount of them when I watch a 1920x1080 29.970 fps interlaced video. Also not affecting performance in any way.

I have a problem with activating HDR via DisplayPort. This is with a LG 34BK95U - 5120x2160 which requires DP 1.4 to get the full width. HDMI (which limits it to 3840 width) works fine.
Basically, it seems that madVR does not recognize that HDR is supported via DP, and thus always does the HDR-to-SDR conversion. (And I have checked that HDR can be activated otherwise via DP.)
This is a heads up to anyone else who has or is thinking of getting this monitor (note that the LG 34WK95U is exactly the same).
I'll be generating a bug report after I gather some more data.
EDIT: I should mention that I have a Nvidia card. AMD could be totally different.

Hi madshi,
We can call IMadVRSettings::SettingsGetBinary in order to get the field value "displaymodesdata" (type : binary) but there isn't any SettingsSetBinary method to set it.
Could you add it in a near future ?
Set methods :
STDMETHOD_(BOOL, SettingsSetString )(LPCWSTR path, LPCWSTR value) = 0;
STDMETHOD_(BOOL, SettingsSetInteger)(LPCWSTR path, int value) = 0;
STDMETHOD_(BOOL, SettingsSetBoolean)(LPCWSTR path, BOOL value) = 0;
Get methods :
STDMETHOD_(BOOL, SettingsGetString )(LPCWSTR path, LPCWSTR value, int* bufLenInChars) = 0;
STDMETHOD_(BOOL, SettingsGetInteger)(LPCWSTR path, int* value) = 0;
STDMETHOD_(BOOL, SettingsGetBoolean)(LPCWSTR path, BOOL* value) = 0;
STDMETHOD_(BOOL, SettingsGetBinary )(LPCWSTR path, LPVOID* value, int* bufLenInBytes) = 0;
Thanks a lot

Hi how can i set a manual renderer device for madvr? why is it automatically using the GPU to which the monitor player is located on.
I have a FHD TV connected to hdmi to a gt 430 because my main GPU rx580 has some issues running my monitor and my TV so i use a gt430 for TV, but when i use potplayer and move it to the TV madvr renderer is using gt 430 for rendering and it drops lots of frames since gt 430 is too weak gpu.
How can i set my main gpu RX 580 to render even when the player in located on a TV/monitor connected to a different GPU(gt430)?
I tried setting LAV video decoder to RX 580 instead of automatic but madvr still renders on gt430 :(
Please madvr developer create an option to allow us GPU selection, dont render automatically on the gpu the screen is connected on thats just please no, dont do that.
nevcairiel

Rendering on any other GPU then the one connected to the screen would be extremely bad for performance, and extremely niche of a feature. Don't hold your breath.
huhn
22nd November 2018, 09:25
you can already use a different GPU to render the on your screen. it's a default feature of windows 10.
you go to settings-> display-> graphics settings -> browse ->add your player
now you go to options and select high performance which should be your AMD card.
in my very limited experiences this works great with intel as the renderer and nvidia as the presentation GPU and totally terrible with nvidia as the renderer and intel as the presentation GPU.
you may run into vsync issues like tearing, PCIe bandwidth limitations, sync issues A/V and "stuff"...
and you may need to change the registry and disable the IGPU if present completely.

what is your end device and is a AVR in between?
What would it matter , if there was an AVR in between. My Marantz SR6010 has a 4:4:4 UHD bypass, would there still be a sgnal or quality loss to be expected ?
