View Full Version : madVR - high quality video renderer (GPU assisted)

Hi guys,
I've a 21:9 projection screen and I normally use madVR with Jriver.
I own a NVIDIA card that is capable to create 21:9 custom resolutions (like 1920x820 pixels).
This is perfect for me because I can see the 3D graphic Cover Flow of Jriver (theater view) perfectly inside my 21:9 projection screen.
The problem is that madvr do not accept those resolution (820p23) under display modes ... madVR says "invalid".
Yes, I know that madVR in the display modes section has an option to "restore original display mode ..." but ... This function do not work under Jriver.
The function work well with MPC-HC but not under Jriver ... infact If I stop the reproduction of the Jriver's media player I can see the Jriver layout but the resolution remains the same called by madVR!
If I close Jriver the resolution switch and turn back to the one selected in the Nvidia controll panel.
many thanks for any feedback.

Weren't there some quality presets for madVR available? Seem to remember sth. like that. Would it be possible to add preset selection from within madVR, to make things a bit easier to those daunted by all the settings?

Anyone else here having issues forcing the madvr deinterlacer into FILM mode? Even when using the keyboard shortcut it says Video.
Also I'm having loads of dropped frames with madvr deinterlacer and smooth motion (either can be on or off) when not in exclusive mode. When I go into exclusive mode I get no dropped frames anymore. Is this normal behaviour?
Using 64bit version.

Presets might not suite everyone, like everyone has his own dithering options preference.
most important items are in the scaling algorithms settings and the dithering section under rendering.

of cause you have to use 1920x820p23 or something like that.

doesn't work with anything other than 8 bit sources and doesn't work with DXVA native.

The video I'm trying it with is 8bit and I have DXVA native on.

turning smooth motion off gives the same result with dropping frames
same with turning deint off and smooth motion on.

sorry it should mean it doesn't work with native DXVA. disable it and try again.
i will fix my post too.
sorry
about the screen what OS and hardware are you using? your present times are terrible.
this is maybe a windows 7 PC without aero. reactivated aero if this is the case.

i7-3770k with a GTX680.
W7 with no aero yeah. I don't have any issues with dropped frames tho with 720P/1080P content. Only with 1080i with deint/smooth motion on in non-exclusive mode.
-edit-
Enabling copy back mode seems to make it possible to force madvr into film mode.

try it with aero, widnows 7 overlay mode or stick with fullscreen exclusive mode.
i personally think windows 7 overlay mode is the best mode anyway so this is a very good work around.
i can't add something else to this, this is a bug with windows 7.
aero is a very important part of windwos 7 without you don't have a proper v-sync.

Hmm ok, weird. Anyways enabling aero seems to have fixed it in windowed mode. Hopefully Win 10 will be better when it comes to this I guess...

Also do you happen to know if dxva copy back is a huge load on the GPU or CPU compared to dxva native?
Also what is different with windows 7 overlay mode?
-edit-
Enable windowed overlay changes the way that windowed mode is rendered, and will generally give you better performance. The downside to windowed overlay is that you cannot take screenshots of it with the “Print Screen” key on your keyboard, and any transparent aspects of Media Center's UI which overlays the video might look a bit strange. Other than that, it's mostly a “free” performance increase for people running Windows 7/8.

it's already fixed in windows 8 you simple can't disable aero anymore and it's not as buggy as widnows 7 aero.

nothing worth talking about. i personally doesn't sue DXVA at all

Presets could cover the most fundamental settings, they won't prevent anyone using advanced, custom settings bypassing the presets.

Hmm, but I game alot, does Aero affect them too? I thought some games were just buggy (I game alot in borderless windowed mode)

of cause it affects windowed and boarderless games they run without v-sync.
just disable most of aero effects just leave the desktop composition on.

It affects non-fullscreen games that will have forced v-sync, less available VRAM and a bit less GPU horsepower. Proper fullscreen ("exclusive") games are not affected at all by aero being on or off (but if you alt tab it can bug out or crash Aero now and then). If you use fullscreen exclusive or overlay you don't need Aero anyway and both those modes are far better than regular windowed.

thank you so much!
You right. 1920x820p23 is valid and works but ... a little problem accours ....
The 16:9 frame of the movie is inscrived inside the new 21:9 resolution! I've black bars on left and right side of the image.
My intent is instead to have a pixel perfect match with cropped pixls on top and bottom.
Do you know some work around?

A quick question on madVR in regards to battery life, I remember a mention that madVR sets the timer resolution to 1ms, and doesn't restore it when madVR exits. Is this still a problem? Is it standard behavior for a renderer? And would it be possible to use a 16ms resolution as a performance/quality option to improve battery life? With a full dxva native chain, madVR could be used on battery-restricted devices, but with a 1ms resolution, battery will likely be hit hard (Chrome was found to use significantly more battery until they stopped using 1ms when a device wasn't plugged in, might be behavior madVR can follow).
thank you so much!

IMHO watching a 16:9 material on a 21:9 screen will always have black bars on the left and the right side, the other solution is to crop the content, but I think it is not a good idea :)

it is reset back to the default as far as i know.
but in the end this is nothing compared to the power madVR takes.
not sure if madVR is a good choice if you care about battery life.
edit: do you have a way to measure power consumption? maybe it doesn't matter and madVR takes the same as EVR. but i'm pretty sure 1 ms is needed for video presentation and EVR is using it too.

it's not totally correct.
movie materials are mainly shooted in 2.35:1 (21:9) format.
so if a system is arranged mainly for home cinema a 21:9 screen is ok.
so if you watch a 2.35:1 film it is very important to have 1:1 pixel perfect matching.
in this case you'll see the active frame perfectly squared in the 21:9 projection screen without any black bar.
I used this configuration for years with kodi.
now that I have mooved to madvr I'm trying to obtain the same result and versatility.
thank you all for any help

if i'm not mistaken all it is a planned feature to remove black boarders.
don't forget all 21/9 movies on a BD are still drawn on a 16/9 frame.
can you make a screen from the OSD you should get a latterbox with such a file.

It is the playback software that is responsible to do that. Madvr only scale to whatever the player tell it to. I remember some players will let you stretch the movie base on one side of the movie or show the movie at 100% size. Dig around the video frame/ video scale options.
On my phone now so can't really check which player can do that.

I know Zoom Player has the option to crop the black bars. Madshi could implement it in madVR but that really seems like a player feature to me.

For this to work with Blu-ray (since they are all 16:9 with some border or not) you will need to zoom into the frame with your media player. And it's not a one size fits all solution either, since some movies are only released in full screen (first Avengers) and some movies move in and out of full screen (Interstellar). Your choice of a 21:9 target is not very ideal and I think you will only regret the choice in the long run.

In MPC-HC you can either select View->Video Frame->Touch Window From Outside or View->Video Frame->Normal Size to get what you want. Other players have similar settings.

There's a changelog within the madvr.zip, so you probably have it wherever you've installed madvr.
There is no official changelog-only link, as far as I know.

Do you know some work around? The reason this happens is because the black bars are encoded in the video. You have to remove them by cropping them. You can do this with ffdshow, for example.
Install ffdshow, add ffdshow raw video filter in External Filters in MPC, then in the properties of this filter select Crop. Play with numbers to crop the correct amount of lines from the top and bottom of the picture.

Like you suggest I've
With MadVr was not possible to activate any tearing test (MPC + Reclock).
MadVr= tearing!
EVR= perfect!
With MadVr was not possible to activate any VSync function (tearing test too) in MPC HC.
Only reclock's tearing test was avaliable.
acta.
I'm having the same issue, i.e., can't activate the tearing test with Control + T in MPC if using madvr, am I doing something wrong?

None of the MPC-HC's "Renderer settings" work with madVR. That's just how it is.
Do you also experience tearing as in the post you've quoted or just the test is not working for you?
Anyway, I fail to understand how a 5+ years old post is relevant here.

Can anyone advice me wich should be best config for:
AMD 8350 octa
AMD 7970 3GHz
8GB RAM
1080p@24/60 screen
I used to use NNedi double luma 32 neurons, catmul rom for image downscalling, and I can't remember the rest.
Very apreciated any advice! (i'm not usually lacy to ask this kind of help, but I'm really short in time this days)

^ as baii says, your media player must do that. E.g. in MPC-HC you could use "touch window from outside", which should do the trick.

The problem was fixed. But it wasn't really a big problem because the moment when you closed the media player, the timer resolution was restored, anyway.

Using Bicubic should work fine for image upscaling. For chroma you can also use Bicubic, if your GPU can handle that, or Bilinear otherwise. I think playback should work just fine with madVR for Blu-Ray, too. No need to use EVR for that.
