Yea, that would be accurate, at least paired with my 3770k. I don't know if having a faster CPU would make any difference or not. I doubt it. If you want all the bells and whistles, though, a 1070 would be a better choice. Then again, at this point I'd not buy anything but a 20x0. I suspect in the future those tensor cores will prove useful.

Hi, I want to know if a gtx 1070 ti can do the fallowing in madvr. I find it much cheaper than a gtx 1080. Can someone please try these settings and let me know the rendering times for 1080p@25,1080p@60, 720p@25,720p@60, 480p@25, 480p@60.

Maybe, if you lowered chroma upscaling to low and got rid of SuperRes. SuperRes doesn't work well with NGU, anyways.

Not a chance if you want to use NGU very high image upscaling.

Question about 'Tone map HDR using pixel shaders'. Is this setting doing dynamic tone mapping, ala HDR10+?
And which value for peak nits should I use? I have a Sony X900F. Not sure which value should I put. Max nits 10% window? 100%? Real scene peak nits? sustained nits? also, should I use BT.2390?

HDR10+ doesn't do dynamic tone mapping it is providing dynamic meta data.
use the nit option that looks best to you.

If the 1070 is all you can afford, you will just have to adapt to what you have.
A lot of these settings are subjective at best, so you may not even need half of them to be as high.
madVR is changing all the time, so various settings HDR wise also affect what you can do with the equipment you have/will have.

One thing I've always admired about madshi's work is that madVR will improve rendering quality no matter what graphics hardware you have. I have a 9" tablet that runs Win 8.1 on an Atom chip, and at default settings madVR performs just fine.
A 1070 card upscaling to a 4K display will produce obvious PQ improvements with any level of NGU. The question then becomes, as always, is it worth spending the bucks on a new graphics card for the amount of improvement you're going to get beyond that. Only your eyes (and your wallet) can answer that one.

@madshi, is it possible to add (auto white balance algorithm) to madvr, i try many avisynth plugins and scripts for that but The result not good at all, and most tvs can do a lot better than avisynth in this case i don't know why، i also try many profissional video editor but The result are good in some and bad in other, i know that you are too busy but i wish if you think about this great Feature in madvr

White balance adjustment of content is a capture/production job, not a rendering job.
If you want to reproduce content with high fidelity you should calibrate your display, not use fake "auto white balance" processing.

Hi, please can someone check something for me, I dont know if this is something ive somehow missed before or i have a problem. Avengers infinity war, i'm seeing ghosted black vertical bars quite thick sometimes right from the start of the movie, they appear to me more pronounced when there is more popping out of the screen, is this normal,have I just missed this?
checked a few other 3D movies I have, nothing but I checked regnorock, that has then as well, sometimes thick sometimes very thin, sometimes not there at all.
Its like the movie isnt centered properly or something, i've check there is no zoom and my aspect ratio is correct, does this with all my players so not software issue I dont think.

this make sense, i always thinking why madvr did not have auto wb, now i understood that it best to let this job to the display in the first place to make true White balance

A small query,does system ram mode(single/dual) & frequency matters for madvr. I have a ryzen 1200+B350mobo(yet to open) & used 1050Ti but no ddr4 ram.I am planning on getting a single stick 4gb 2400mhz ram for now. This system is mainly used for watching 720p/1080p videos connected to a 1080p TV.

the ram speed shouldn't be important for madVR but 4Gb is asking for troubles this is a close call and depends a lot on how much your OS things it has to use.

4Gb might work fine if all you're doing is playing videos. You didn't say what OS you're using, but you'll want to look at the minimum requirements for the OS and how much RAM your video player uses. If you have an SSD, virtual memory won't be terribly slow if the OS needs to use it. Anti-virus programs can be major memory hogs, as can the Chrome browser if you keep a lot of tabs open, so factor in any other programs you'll be running on the machine.
You're going to want 8Gb eventually, but hopefully RAM prices will have come down by then.

That's my plan,waiting for prices to drop to get another 4gb ram later.This system I will build,I am planning on win 8.1 on a ssd & obviously nothing memory intensive will be running in the background while watching videos(except maybe utorrent). I am already used to running win 7 on 4gb ram with an ancient 2nd gen pentium dual core & I believe win 8.1 is a bit more memory efficient compared to win 7. Only reason I am upgrading system is because my processor regularly hits 90% usage while playing high bit rate 1080p 10bit h264 videos for which there is no hardware acceleration.

I would close it before watching a movie if you want to minimize dropped frames, even on an SSD and a multi-core CPU.

Hi everyone. Just wanted to say thank you very much to madshi for madVR. I'm currently trying out the tone mapping for HDR content on my LG B7 OLED and it's fantastic. I have always used the Active HDR mode of this TV to improve HDR10 and madVR gives me a similar experience, but better.
Compared to Active HDR madVR is better at preserving details in bright spots of movies. For example in the clouds at the beginning of Sicario some small details are lost with Active HDR but stay visible with madVR, even with highlight recovery set to none (but even better when activated). The overall image looks very much the same apart from that at target peak nits of 600 to 700.
Even more important, madVR doesn't suffer from brightness pumping like Active HDR. When white subtitles appear on the screen Active HDR reduced the overall brightness of the display noticably. I hated it. Solved with madVR.
Most of the time Active HDR and madVR tone mapping look very much the same, and better than standard HDR10. They seem to agree a lot on how the picture is supposed to look like, which is a good sign I think.
One thing I noticed: There is a big brightness difference between target peak nits 500 and 501. I don't know why, but there seems to be a magical threshold. 501 is the brightest setting, 500 is much darker, comparable to setting it to 800-900 but with more need for highlight recovery. I don't know if this has to do with the TV or madVR. It's not important anyway, just interesting.

Actually not downloading but seeding at ~4-5MB/s(a 50mbps connection),will it still be an issue with a ssd & ryzen 1200.

I imagine then that PGS subtitles on HDR movies would already be somewhat dimmed by the authoring facility...if they know what they're (should be) doing, that is....

I use the old utorrent version without ads.As far as I can see in task manager it is the cpu usage which is of main concern(~10-15%) which can make a difference when playing a file requires 75-85% cpu usage.
i'm pretty confident to say that an I/O operation an HDD can do is nothing for an SSD.
I agree & for extra safety I can always copy the video files to ssd first to play them from there separate from hdd from which seeding takes place.

You need to have both 64 and 32 bits LAV filters installed.

I got it to work twice now. but the conditions for that seem to be somewhat random. once a measurement file was created, another time even with the percentage display running. but most of the time no file is created at all.
perhaps the issue is related to optimus stuff or maybe LAVfilters.

The more madVR can utilize the GPU, the less important the CPU should be... but a fast CPU will be important for decoding complex and high-res videos.

a CPU is not very important for madVR.
it doesn't scale with the CPU either you have the CPU power that is needed or you don't.

I don't know if this is fundamental / bad thread scheduling from Windows or if madVR uses more CPU than it used to (maybe another function started taking way longer to complete since Windows 10 r1803, or maybe the Spectre mitigations are causing a bottleneck), but it's something to keep in mind. That's on an AMD Ryzen running at 3.75GHz.

Is using a dvi-d cable makes some sort of additional processing, cause in nvidia control panel I can only choose "desktop color depth 32-bit", the other options are not available etc. "output color depth", "output color format" and "output dynamic range".

madshi recommends using D3D11 native decoding because it's the most efficient for the tool (32-bit). If you use anything else and the RAM usage of the tool is >1.49GB, it will crash.

Ideally when doing timing sensitive work like video playback you want to avoid all unnecessary background tasks especially I/O dependent.

I've actually had an SSD pretty much hang my system while a process was verifying the integrity of a million files. I/O is definitely a big issue for responsiveness. CPU usage I would expect to have a more fine-grained effect, especially if you aren't fully loading all the cores. Either way I'm more inclined to blame Windows than madVR ;)

If I use passthrough HDR to display (instead of tone map HDR using pixel shaders), madVR is still going to use the measurement file or I have to choose 'tone map hdr using pixel shaders' ?

I followed the guide, the measurement file gets created, but it doesn't show any changes in measured frame and scene in MadVR OSD when i play the movie. Tried both 32 bit and 64 bit MPC-HC/LAV. What am I missing?

I hope madshi creates a 64-bit build of that tool, because 64-bit processing can be considerably faster and less prone to memory issues. In fact, who doesn't run 64-bit these days, and with such a standalone tool there is no compatibility to consider, so personally I would go exclusively 64-bit.
