Set the hardware device to "Automatic (Native)" not the RTX 2070.

I follow your indication and the only option that activate hardware decoding was CUVID (look at the attached image).
In this way massive dropped frames are vanished.
Now it's ok.

My question is: the only kind of hardware accelleration supported by those nvidia cards is Cuvid?

No, something is wrong with your setup, you should be able to use any DXVA mode successfully.
Do you have multiple displays or multiple GPUs, and is the one you're using to display video configured as the main (first) one?

cant say ive noticed any, under what conditions / material ?

I got the Martian on 4K HDR, I could especially see the Banding on the Mars Red Sky in the intro sequences of the movie. This is through DXVA native on the 580.

This is on the latest adrenaline driver with 09217 madvr.


I agree it could very well be my Particular TV Computer/ Cable, software, etc,


I'm just at wits end with this, and I know my kitchen computer w/ 1060 does 4KHDR just fine, So.. My patience has been exceeded.. :(

I'm not Super duper sure if the cpu can do 4K 60.. with the 64bit mpchc Avx + 8 thread hw , it SHOULD..

DXVA definitely can do it though, so gotta select DXVA native in Lavfilter hardware acceleration.

i know that for nvidia the chroma is misplaced by half a sub pixel with DXVA native and deinterlancing.

not sure what AMD is currently doing wrong but bilinear chroma is not the hit anyway. bending is clearly a possibility. beware that bending could come from d3d11 full screen or d3d11 fullscreen window too so check those. nvidia broke d3d11 fullscreen window a long while ago which is now fixed.

just use DXVA copyback which should do until 8k which hopefully never takes foot.

How does dxva copyback improve upon dxva's problems. As in, how does it work..

also does dxva native while using madvr's chroma have any issues ?

DXVA2 Copy-back copies the video data from the memory on the GPU to system memory after hardware decoding. This allows code that runs on the CPU to access the video data but takes PCIe bandwidth. The data is also copied back to the GPU for further processing by madVR, and then finally sent to the GPU driver for display. This is why you want at least PCIe 2.0 x16 or PCIe 3.0 x8. For 4K60 HDR you might need more?

To complicate this Nvidia, with all drivers as far as I know, has that odd half pixel chroma offset which madVR avoids in copy-back mode by handling all chroma scaling itself. With DXVA2 Native there is a blur or similar damage when coping the chroma to madVR (GPU to GPU memory copy), even when using non-dxva chroma scaling. D3D11 Native avoids this issue. Nvidia's DXVA2 deinterlacing still has chroma issues no matter what chroma scaling you use.

Everything seems to work well for me with the current 417.71 drivers on a RTX 2080 Ti, Win10 1809 17763.253. HDR requires 10-bit output but both D3D11 fullscreen windowed and exclusive work well, with the GPU outputting 8-bit RGB to my LG C7P. I can add a custom mode for 23.976 Hz and optimize it. :)

It is very important to me to know that my rtx 2070 can do other hardware decoding different of Cuvid!
Now I know that I've some problem.

Yes, my mobo (Asus H110M-K D3) has an onboard gpu.
Now I'm trying to find a way to turn off this graphic card.
Yesterday I've read the user manual but it seems there is no way to turn off it....

In the windows screen control panel I've set to use only the nvidia card but all remains the same... The only acceleration that works for me remains Cuvid...

What nVidia drivers are you using ?

Put it in D3D11 and native and Full Screen mode as well and post a screenshot, there is no reason this should not work.

The other GPU should not really matter, If you are plugged into the nVidia card with an HDMI cable then it should be fine, you should be able to disable it in the BIOS somewhere, you could probably do it in device manager as well I would imagine.

The Martian is supposed to have some banding in the sky. This is well known and is why this disc is often used to test debanding solutions on TVs.

It sounds like image doubling isn't active. There is no upscaling after doubling 1080p -> 1440p, only image downscaling.

Set activate doubling to "...only if any upscaling is needed."

mmmhhh I understand, I thought that "if any more scaling needs to be done" setting was a fallback of "activate doubling... only if scaling factor is 2.0x or bigger". So do I have to set this rule (2.0x or bigger) explicitly in the rules box? I don't want luma doubling for small upscales.

If you set it to 2.0x, image doubling wouldn't activate and would fallback to Jinc. If you want another upscaler, create a special profile for 1080p content.

isn't it the other way around the sky in the movie is know to produce banding with bad processing that doesn't mean only a Tv with debanding can show it without major banding.

AFAIK only sony has an extra option for debanding.

No, I'm pretty sure every TV shows some banding in certain portions of that movie, but some are far worse than others. Many TV manufacturers now include debanding and denoising filters in their TVs.

HDTV Test is the YouTube channel that uses The Martian most often. The denoising and debanding filters are often combined under the same setting. This year, LG is separating the two based on the feedback that denoising removes too much image detail. With very few exceptions, most calibrators advise to disable these filters.

I watch big-budget SDR Blu-rays on a ~4000:1 display and I keep madVR's debanding enabled at all times, otherwise I regularly get scenes where things very obviously look like crap. I don't know if that's just because of personal sensitivity, Blu-Ray production chains being screwed up, or if that's a fundamental format limitation because I'm watching a 8-bit undithered source on a >1000:1 display. (I strongly suspect it's the latter. Hopefully with 10-bit sources I will not have to keep that debander enabled any longer.)

Interesting. I thought dithering was not used when encoding to a lossy format such as H.264 because it would kill the compression efficiency? Maybe I just had bad luck with the Blu-Rays I've been watching.

the lossy encoding will do dmg to it but with typical BD bitrates you can encode it. adding noise is even or was even used to trick and stop the encoder from blocking banding but not sure if this was done in professional cases.

madVR has no nearest neighbor upscaling right. I thought that for some 720p technical/tutorial videos (screen captures) quality stands better than bloating it with antialiasing filters.

If you do need bigger original pixels for some reason you can enable Nearest Neighbor by setting keyboard shortcuts for it. There is a "set to Nearest Neighbor" option for chroma upscaling, image upscaling, and image downscaling.

weve all been there mate, its really easy to get caught up in all of this hoping to find PQ nirvana.

The RX 580 is a good card for the money right now and drivers are stable and reliable for 8bit/10bit HDR/3D and 23,976 playback - stick with it a while.

I would disagree, NGU works quite well for that content.

If you do need bigger original pixels for some reason you can enable Nearest Neighbor by setting keyboard shortcuts for it. There is a "set to Nearest Neighbor" option for chroma upscaling, image upscaling, and image downscaling.

Thank you, that will work. NGU at 40cm of a 27" monitor looks like warped plastic, no offense to NGU I use for movies and everything else but for tutorials or such specially 720p (multiple of 1440p) works nice, crisp untouched video.

I've deactivated the integrated GPU onto my mobo but the problem persists.

What nVidia drivers are you using ?

Put it in D3D11 and native and Full Screen mode as well and post a screenshot, there is no reason this should not work.

I've discovered what is my problem.
I've performed my yesterday tests with MPC-HC (last version) using external LAV filters just installed (0.73.1).
And with this chain I was only able to activate hardware accelleration with CUVID.

Tonight I've set MPC-HC to use it's internal LAV filters (ver. 0.70.2.1 -git) and now I've hardware decoding with CUVID, DXVA and DXVA copy-back.

After that I've installed Kodi DSPlayer (latest version).

That's interesting, I'm mostly using DXVA2 Native with my GTX 1060 and haven't noticed that so far. On which scenes can I see such damages clearly? So, should I definitely change to D3D11 Native ? PotPlayer doesn't like D3D11 Native much.

the usual chroma test image should do.

or you just press control+shift+altf12 until it shows Cr or Cb after that you can press control+shift+alt+t to toggle deinterlancing the image should get very soft and should move a around a bit.

for the fairest comparison make sure both use the same chroma scaler.

Hey guys, I will do a rebuild of my two pc's. one for gaming and one for htpc use wirh an lg c8 oled tv. therefore I got a rx vega 56 and a gtx 1070. what card would you guys prefer for htpc use? are there any know driver problems with the latest nvidia drivers in terms of 23,976 and custom resolution, hdr switching or any other known issues?

Nvidia drivers will vary per release. Some do have issues with custom resolutions and HDR switching, but others don't. 12-bit custom resolutions simply do not work with madVR, but may work with the Custom Resolution Utility (CRU).

I don't know of anyone who uses the RX Vega 56 with madVR. You should try both and report back on the performance of the Vega 56.

Update to latest version MPC-HC 1.8.4. That includes newest LAV Filters and also properly supports D3D11 with internal codecs.

Hey guys, I will do a rebuild of my two pc's. one for gaming and one for htpc use wirh an lg c8 oled tv. therefore I got a rx vega 56 and a gtx 1070. what card would you guys prefer for htpc use? are there any know driver problems with the latest nvidia drivers in terms of 23,976 and custom resolution, hdr switching or any other known issues?

This would actually be a great opportunity for you to test AMD 10-bit output with your OLED. 12-bit output with Nvidia shows some nasty banding, which is why 8-bit output is recommended for both LG 7 and 8 series. I'd be very interested to see if 10-bit shows that same banding.

Is the banding only with LG and Nvidia, or 12bit in general..

AMD using dxva2 native has massive banding for me, copy back fixes the banding. (RX 580)

Nvidia drivers will vary per release. Some do have issues with custom resolutions and HDR switching, but others don't. 12-bit custom resolutions simply do not work with madVR, but may work with the Custom Resolution Utility (CRU).

I don't know of anyone who uses the RX Vega 56 with madVR. You should try both and report back on the performance of the Vega 56.

the usual chroma test image should do.

or you just press control+shift+altf12 until it shows Cr or Cb after that you can press control+shift+alt+t to toggle deinterlancing the image should get very soft and should move a around a bit.

for the fairest comparison make sure both use the same chroma scaler.

SO, if the CPU of the pc can't handle h265 decode, we should use dxva Copyback and dx11 ?

I've never had the chance to test with an AMD GPU, but I'm assuming the issue is with the display and 12-bit input in general.

Considering a used 1070 or 1080 right now.

Is the additional power much greater than a 1060, (FOR MADVR, I don't play games.)

I already own a 1060 for the kitchen pc.

1060 priced ~$160 used
1070 ~$250
1080 ~$400


What extra performance setting (MADVR) can be reached by the 1070/ 1080..

Up to about 100W depending on how you push it. I use a 460W with no issues on an overlocked 1080 with Ryzen 1700/16GB.

Hahaha.. No I mean't MADVR performance.. Cranking up settings .. :D

What can a 1070/1080 crank up that a 1060 could not.

HDR and luma/chroma NGU, you get a quieter card for content that doesn't need a lot of work.
I use a Full HD screen so it's all NGU up and SSIM2D down for me. I barely bother with additional sharpening.
Basically just ratcheting up the settings a notch over what you already got.. My 1080 was a nice upgrade over my 1060 6GB.. and I only use it for madVR at this stage.
