Correct me if I'm wrong, but I seem to get the impression that LAV's D3D11 decoding option may be compatible with any GPU that supports D3D11?
No, to use hardware decoding your hardware needs to be able to decode the video. LAV falls back to software decoding if your hardware does not support the format.

Hi all,
I've enjoyed madvr now for years, and learnt ALOT from the great people on this forum, but, alas, as I really don't see MadVR getting updated, and the fact that technology has moved on over the last few years, and the general issues with using a HTPC, I took the plunge a few weeks ago and went for a hardware solution. I looked at all the main players, and narrowed it down to Dune, Zappiti, and Ziddo, and ended up choosing the Zidoo Z1000 Pro, and I have to say, I could not be happier (https://www.avforums.com/reviews/zidoo-z1000-pro-android-tv-box-review.18745), and yes, the picture quality really does rival (read beat) the mighty Oppo 203!
I too found it difficult to look at anything other than a HTPC using MadVR, but, sadly, MadVr has stayed static, whilst the rest of the tech world has moved on.
I'll check back from time to time, as, like all of us, MadVR became a bit of an obsession.

Agreed, there will NEVER be a perfect solution, so, there are always comprises - mine is, is the picture good, does it just work, whats the interface like?.....and, is it wife friendly?
Like I said, happy viewing (for the 1st time in years, the wife and I just watched a film, no having to tweak, no if only...the picture quality, well, like watching a movie, and it looked great).

I`m using a dual display configuration.
1 - default: Asus VG259QM
2 - extended: Panasonic TX-P55ST60
madVR can switch a modes for default display only, but for extended display it can`t.
Yes, extended display is completely broken, it uses the settings from the main display, even LUT. Since my main monitor cannot switch refresh rates, madVR uses default 60Hz all the time. I changed the LUT of the main display (fortunately, I don't use it for film watching) and for now I manually switch refresh rates on extended display using nvidia driver. It's PITA but it works.

Madvr is the ONLY good solution on the market. Everything else is plain impractical.

From what I’ve read it seems MPV is getting closer to being a good substitute, apart from HDR —> SDR tonemapping. It’s already possible to load filters which is equally good or better at chroma upscaling than MadVRs NGU. It also seems MPV supports icc profiles and use it to generate a LUT on the fly. Probably not quite as good as our pre-rendered 3D-LUTs, but closer to that than nothing.
I just searched all of this since I’m planning to buy a new laptop, and was wondering about other solutions. I’m still landing on mpc-hc + MadVR though.

After upgrading to Windows 11, mpc-be can no longer enter into Fullscreen Exclusive Mode (8-bit or 10-bit) with Madvr V0.92.17. It is always fullscreen windowed. Previously it was working on Windows 10. Anyone else having the same issue? Thanks.

Also, I read that madvr V0.92.17 is having issue on Windows 11 getting HDR to display properly. Does it resolve if I use OS HDR instead? Some say no saying the color still looks incorrect but I am not sure as I cannot compare it with the OS HDR picture on Windows 10.

It's not better than nothing, it's most likely WORSE than nothing.
Madvr gives you END TO END, calibration goes through its renderer, You can be 100% confident that the measurements correlate with output. It also dithers, ensuring smooth corrections, which "effectively,sorta,kinda, magics" 8bit panels into 10bit panels..
ANY other method is just winging it. In the case of the interaction between our clandestine free softwares, gpu drivers, windows random updates, gamma ramps, bit depth discrepancies, It's a total nightmare.
There was a windows update not long ago that completely broke windows gamma ramp for months.
Color tweaking outside of Madvr, you're better off using the TV's internal rgb gamma correction, because at least you can count on its consistency when interacting with the software set to default. :D

Make sure to turn off D3D11 if you want to use Overlay.

What causes 1 repeat frame with 2 dropped frames on 60.000fps content on 59.9xHz displays? Doesn't seem to be madVR specific since I'm seeing 2 dropped frames here in there in Chrome playing Youtube. My U3014 is pretty consistent doing 1 repeat + 2 drops at 59.97Hz, while my VG248 intersperses the proper 1 frame drop with 1 repeat + 2 drops at 59.94.
GTX 1070, software decoding, latest drivers. (was doing it on my previous 366 drivers too)
I set a custom refresh of 60.001 to get around it, but is this something wrong on Nvidia's end?

Hey all - got a new Projector, and been having a heck of a time with getting the black levels right for HDR.
The projector (JVC RS2000) Does a great job with frame adapt tone mapping, so I have madvr passthrough the HDR.
Secnario 1: Using my black level BT.2020 Video, if I hover over the menu at the bottom and the video turns to 8 bit windowed, the black levels seem more distinguishable and brighter. Letting the video go back to 10 bit windowed, they get noticeably darker. This holds true throughout all the various tests I have done. Is there a way to get that 8bit vibrance in the 10bit window?
Scenario 2: I tried setting my HTPC to RGB 12Bit, Full Full Full through the chain. Doing this added a grayish haze to the black levels (interestingly like if you send a Limited signal over HDMI to a PC screen - you get the washed out blacks). If I set the PJ to Limited in this config, the haze goes away - but back to the darker blacks.
I have tried all sorts of combinations (setting the color output from RGB to Ycbr444 and even 422). All have this very dark black level.
I even dived into the Nvidia advanced video settings to see if adjusting the video output there helped (not really - in fact one of the choices absolutely crushed the blacks so I couldn't see any bars at all in my video).
I am hoping there is a setting or combination that I have missed somewhere!!

that's lavfilter not madVR. if you tell lavfilter to use the CPU is will use that.
the d3d11 option Asmodian talked about is in madVR the option in lavfilter has just the same name because it is the same API.
overlay rendering is part of D3D9 if D3D11 in madVR is active it will not use it. the d3d11 >decode< in lavfilter does not matter here that's just what decoder is used and how the data reaches madVR.

Care to say why you picked this and not an Nvidia Shield? Their new upscaling appears to be quite good, while I don't think this one does anything special in that regard (but I might be wrong...).

I owned almost every major Oppo Player since the BDP-83 which was a really great machine PQ wise cause of the Anchor Bay chipset. All models after that except the 103 Darbee (which I have never owned, I decided to combine a Darbee box with a Panny player) were downright awful. The reasons I bought the players were for SACD/DVD-Audio, easy codefree hardware mod and ISO playback, but never for their PQ.
The Qdeo models were only usable with HDMI2 output where Qdeo was circumvented cause Qdeo made the picture soft and flat. I compared at that time a BDP-93 against a Panny 320 and the difference PQ wise was huge between the two in favor of the Panny.
The 203 was an PQ-wise OK player but never matched my Panny 824. How people believed Oppo would be able to squeeze out something extraordinary from a low-cost Mediatek chipset always puzzled me. Since Oppo went to Mediatek as the main chipset with the BDP-93 they had trouble with chroma upsampling especially in 4:4:4 (known general issue of Mediatek chipsets for ages). The early firmware versions of the 203 had severe aliasing issues caused by the 4:4:4 upsampling especially visible in intense red. This was halfway fixed in the 3rd or 4th firmware update. I had a chat with an Oppo engineer who was responding that the Mediatek chipset SDK is limited and doesn't allow further improvements to completely fix the chroma issues of the chipset.

the sync using a custom refreshrate could be improved but that's some work. you could try SM at 60 for an alternative.
i don't understand NGU sharp for chroma NGU sharp is good with high quality sharp images which chroma rarely is but is not like it's damaging the image.

The problem with the projector's onboard tonemapping is that you have no idea what it's Supposed to look like, because projectors flat out can't output HDR.
So, there's really nothing you can do about it, Just watch a movie, if the contrast (as is ) is acceptable to you, then you're good to go.
If you want some semblance of CONTROL, then you need a color probe, and use madvr's hdr to sdr tonemapping. This is the only way to have reliable metrics.
Eyeballing those charts is pointless. Especially when tonemapping is being done by the machine.

I am projecting onto a 180" screen from over 20 feet away - so I guess it figures that I would have to have the settings cranked to achieve that.

Is it that the shadow detail is better or that the black level is different?
Helping with the black level doesn't sound right, bit depth shouldn't change the black level at all. What is that projector doing?! :eek:
The important thing is what looks best, and devices do weird things when theoretically they shouldn't. Without in-depth knowledge about what happens in the projector we cannot know what should be best theoretically, so trust your eyes. :)

When raising the brightness control to adjust shadow detail you are killing your native contrast if you raise the black floor. As long as you check the black floor, it’s not necessarily a problem for contrast, but it means that your levels are wrong somewhere in the chain, so you are most likely hurting the highlights as well and the contrast setting should be adjusted too. When the levels are properly set up, you shouldn’t need such a large adjustment for brightness/contrast in the PJ. A better way to adjust shadow detail would be to use the gamma controls or calibration.
You shouldn’t use 10 or 12bits with the 4K JVCs. Their internal processing is limited to 422 in 4K, which means that they are doing a double conversion behind madvr’s back that hurts chroma (assuming you are sending 444 to make the most of madVR chroma up scaling). With older models you don’t have a choice due to the magenta bug in 8bits.
Also there are lots of issues with levels in 12 bits with the nVidia drivers, especially the SDR and HDR levels don’t match, which probably causes the levels issues you are experiencing. Full Full Full is bad and doesn’t work with the JVCs for video content, at least not for both SDR and HDR at the same time.
The correct settings for using a JVC (any 4K model, I have an rs2000) is RGB full 8bits (no video processing of any kind in the drivers) on the GPU driver, madVR set to full (8 bits) and the PJ set to standard/limited. This doesn’t give you the right levels for the desktop, but it gives you correct levels for both SDR and HDR content, as long as you have a driver version that works for the OS version you are using because madVR is buggy and doesn’t output tone mapped HDR correctly. I gave up on that front as madshi doesn’t have the time to fix this, so I use a different source with Envy, but with HDR passthrough you should have less issues with recent drivers up to windows 10.
The 10bits of HDR10 are used, it’s important to have them on the input side, but they become 16bits during processing with madVR which has excellent dithering. There is no visible difference from a sitting distance between outputting 12bits, 10bits or 8bits with madVR if properly setup (you need to adjust the bits output setting both in the nVidia driver and in madVR). There is a minuscule amount of noise near black when dithering to 8bits vs 10/12 if you have your nose on the screen, but it’s far less of an issue than the double chroma processing and the levels issues when using 12bits (especially for gaming, for which you need to select extended levels on the JVC to get full/full and get the correct levels with desktop content when madVR isn’t used).

I think you'll need to check your monitor's actual refresh rate measured in realtime, such as with MadVR's Ctrl+J screen. From what you wrote it sounds like when you set it to 60.001 you're actually getting something closer to 59.94 than when setting it to 59.94 -- unless that Miku video really is .00?
The video is 60.000 and setting a custom refresh of 60.001 fixes the issue. I get no drops in Chrome or MPC-HC. The default "60Hz" (59.97), though, has a noticeable stutter every 35 seconds, both in Chrome and MPC-HC with madVR when it syncs the 59.97 refresh to the 60fps video, and madVR is reporting it as 1 dupe + 2 drops, though it will occasionally have a sync with the proper 1 frame drop.
Setting my other monitor to "59Hz" (59.94 actual, so someone knew what they were doing), shows the same issue, though it will more often have the proper 1 frame drop sync.
Unless this is some necessary behavior for some reason, it would appear to be a bug. Don't know if it is on Windows' or Nvidia's side.
If an AMD user could set their display to something between 59.94 and 59.99 and check to see if they're getting 2 frame drop syncs in Chrome, or madVR showing 1 repeat + 2 drops, that would help.

The default "60Hz" (59.97), though, has a noticeable stutter every 35 seconds, both in Chrome and MPC-HC with madVR when it syncs the 59.97 refresh to the 60fps video, and madVR is reporting it as 1 dupe + 2 drops, though it will occasionally have a sync with the proper 1 frame drop.
Setting my other monitor to "59Hz" (59.94 actual, so someone knew what they were doing), shows the same issue, though it will more often have the proper 1 frame drop sync.
Unless this is some necessary behavior for some reason, it would appear to be a bug. Don't know if it is on Windows' or Nvidia's side.
If an AMD user could set their display to something between 59.94 and 59.99 and check to see if they're getting 2 frame drop syncs in Chrome, or madVR showing 1 repeat + 2 drops, that would help.
Did you turn on G-sync in the NVidia driver? Please enable it.

You shouldn’t use 10 or 12bits with the 4K JVCs.
Also there are lots of issues with levels in 12 bits with the nVidia drivers, especially the SDR and HDR levels don’t match
The correct settings for using a JVC (any 4K model, I have an rs2000) is RGB full 8bits (no video processing of any kind in the drivers) on the GPU driver, madVR set to full (8 bits) and the PJ set to standard/limited.

But I just wanted to say that, with so many hardware / software combinations, updates from JVC, Windows, etc.. The ONLY WAY to know for sure is using a color probe and TESTING all the setting combinations.

When I get back to that PJ I will experiment with 8bit again. I don't recall it being bad.
Also, just a quick informational questions for tone mapping.
Since the Projector is going a decent job with tone mapping HDR content, if I switch back to MadVR HDR to SDR tone mapping - am I not losing out on the BT.2020 colors and depth? Since MadVR output will be bt.709? The projector is tone mapping in the BT.2020 color space - and if that looks good and bright, then isn't it the ideal choice?

I wasn't trying to suggest that MadVR was limited to bt 709 - however, when it is outputting in SDR, the display is at BT.709 color space (right?).
When HDR is sent to the display - the display switches to BT.2020 color space.
This is where I am confused. If MadVR is outputting to a display that is in BT.709 SDR mode, is there not something that is 'lost' in the colors VS having the display in BT.2020 HDR mode?
E.g. if the auto tone mapping on the PJ is 'bright' enough to be able to watch - is that preferable since it is using the full BT.2020 color landscape?

there is nothing from stopping any device been SDR and bt 2020 at the same time. bt 2020 is a pretty old spec BTW.
if your device is in BT 709 (or "high" constrast mode on PJ even in HDR) it is limited to bt709 and can only show BT 709 colors.
