the display refreshrate is relative to the CPU clock it's meaningless only useful for math.

why would you waist your time to maybe reach 43 mins when you could get none.

try your luck with letting madVR calculating the best value for your screen and current audio clock because your audio clock does not seem to agree with your targeted 23.967023.

Unfortunately I only have precision of +/-0.002hz regardless of what I set my timing parameters to.

I have already tried custom timings by adjusting it manually using the calculator I linked to, which can provide values that combine to a resulting refresh rate to perfect accuracy. It's basically the same as MadVR's automatic optimization except I did it manually. But it always snaps to nearest 0.002hz according to Ctrl+J and so I cannot get a good result.

When doing manual tuning, the Ctrl+J reported refresh rate is useful because it's the only way I know what I'm actually getting. Otherwise all I would see is frame repeat turning into frame drop and I wouldn't know why.

But I will try MadVR's optimization tool to see if it can come up with anything better. I seriously doubt it though -- I've already spent hours trying all kinds of combinations of pixel clocks, porches etc. according to that calculator. But the actual result is always something that is either +/-0.002hz which is not enough precision.

No more eg. 50i when connected to older TV?

As expected, all of MadVR's suggested optimized modes don't improve my situation as something in my system is snapping refresh rate to a 0.002hz margin so they all just result in the same 23.977hz.

i.e:
Set 23.97548hz = 23.97520hz actual; 1 drop every 32 mins
Set 23.97550hz = 23.97700hz actual; 1 repeat every 12 mins

My strategy was to go up in increments of 0.00025hz until I found the snapping/rounding point and then backed it off until I'm right on the edge. The best I could get was 1 dropped frame per 32 minutes. This means I am off by around 0.0005hz.

Unfortunately I cannot get the precision any more than that, so I'm not sure what to do other than trying different driver versions or changing the OS.

Disappointing because Madshi obviously knows exactly the problem and made this fantastic optimization tool but it's all for naught if the system cannot do these small 0.0005hz adjustments. Neither of my systems can do this, so I'm not sure what it takes. I'm starting to think that anyone who got a good timing mode were just lucky that it happens to be within the rounding range of their system.

Hey guys,

This whole thread is a monster and I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction. After selling an organ (I joke) I purchased a Nvidia RTX 3090 (will probably arrive to me next week). I am going to use it for gaming as well. However, is there a guide to what the best/max settings for each area inside madVR I can set to with this graphic card? I want to be able to (hopefully) use the highest settings in each category. Use reasonably some image enhancement on top of this but more importantly tone map HDR as well So, is there a guide to what the best recommended settings for those are with a RTX 3090 card? I mostly watch movies (60% of them are 1080p 23.976 movies with the remaining being 2160p 23.976 movies). Occasionally, there might be a 25hz movie now and then.

Also on a side note (since I haven't used an nvdia card in a long time) is the whole 23.976 hz issue resolved that the card can play 23.976 properly like the Intel cards can?

Anyone else with AMD 23.3.1 not working AMD HDR with LG OLED CX? It takes like 3 sec to get into HDR mode and it stays 8bit, compared to OS HDR which is 10bit. Using potplayer windows 11 + Madvr + Lavfilter 0.76

EDIT : Nevermind restarting windows fixed that.


EDIT : something weird, if I open Chrome, it happens again, sign off sign on windows fix it until I open chrome again....... that's weird. I tried Radeon Super Resolutionoff and VRR Off for chrome

EDIT : Seems like disabling RSR for chrome only and then restarting fixes the issue. Could be maybe AMD Overlay somehow running, I forgot I had it on, but it still working fine with it on.

EDIT : it still randomly create a new identification almost every time I open madvr with a movie. weird.

EDIT : I disabled the Windows VRR Generic settings, it seems it fixed the issue with the 8bit sticking. I will check about the madvr identification

That is not an AMD specific bug. It has been reported several times already since first Windows 11 release. Either bug in windows or madvr. Completely resetting your madvr settings might solve it.

EDIT: the madvr identification stopped making new ones but AMD HDR 10bit stop working randomly for some reason

EDIT : Still can't fix it, it's randomly stop working, I did madvr reinstall. I see that Potplayer HDR own DXVA works fine.. it's something with Madvr

I'm using a 1070 and it supports 23.976hz and I'd be shocked if it didn't. But as you might have read the closest I can get is 23.9752hz or 23.9770hz which leaves me with 1 frame skip every 32min and 12min respectively. So during a 2 hour movie I would expect to see probably 3 skips. I don't think it's an NVidia issue as I also have an R9 380 and cannot get more precise adjustments with that either. Wish MadVR could just play the video at the monitor's refresh rate and let the audio decoder sync to that -- a skipped audio frame may be less noticeable. Is this how Bluray players do it? Of course we can do a similar thing with ReClock, but that is 32 bit only and may have other issues. It can also take 25fps and dechipmunk it to 24fps which is neat. If the author would make a 64-bit version I'd probably use it.

I reckon "best" settings is going to be pretty subjective. Personally I'm satisfied with Lanczos or Cubic for scaling. For chroma I like Bilateral as it seems to produce smoother chroma edges, although slightly less sharp.

For enhancements I like LumaSharpen as my go-to sharpener. For animation, AdaptiveSharpen looks better to my eyes. The de-bloating filter seems to negate the effect of the sharpener too much so I don't use it. The de-ringing filter seems ok though. I only use these rarely if the source is wooly old SD content or some odd exceptions like Star Trek TNG Bluray or Samurai Champloo Bluray. The great thing is MadVR can apply it per-folder by tagging the folder name with eg. [profile=lumasharpen] and then making an image enhancements profile in MadVR called lumasharpen.

Also if you are going to add sharpening, preview it in full screen mode as I find it results in a different sharpening amount due to the unpredictable way MadVR applies the sharpening pre/post resize depending on the window size. In full screen you can right click for the menu > Filters > MadVR and adjust and preview while paused on a scene.

Impossible to comment on other stuff without knowing your monitor specs. But still, you might need to "eyeball" it -- my TV is something like 130nits peak white and for the HDR tone mapping I have it set to 200nits to look subjectively "good".

Ideally you'd want the display to support all of these modes:

23.976
24.000
25.000
29.970
30.000
50.000
59.940
60.000

But each one of these may need manual tuning to minimise the frame skips (+/- 0.001hz = +/- 1 frame skip every 16 minutes) so it can take a very long time to get them all tuned. Ctrl+J tells the story.

Again, wish MadVR had an option to avoid this by playing the video at the refresh rate and let the audio decoder sync to video. eg. LAV audio filter has "auto A/V sync" setting which I presume does that? Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, I'd like to know how this works.

But, I was curious to try out madVR's tone mapping and now that I'm getting a RTX3090 for gaming, I was hoping to use it to tone map. Also, I figured since this card is capable of so much, I was curious what the max settings I could push MadVR to. Granted, I can spend the time trying out each setting. However, was hoping maybe if someone else already owns a 3090 and has pushed madVR with that card, I could start with similar settings to begin with.

What are you trying to achieve with your JVC NX7? Are you not satisfied with its tone mapping of HDR?

If not, I guess you could disable the JVC's "frame adapt HDR" feature and have MadVR do the tone mapping instead by selecting "tone map HDR using pixel shaders" and "output video in HDR format" and then adjust the 4 parameters to your liking. It seems you'll need to untick "compromise on tone & gamut mapping accuracy" in rendering settings to unlock the "color tweaks for fire & explosions" and "highlight recovery strength" options.

On the other hand if you are happy with the JVC's tone mapping then it seems you'd want to choose "passthrough HDR to display" and "send HDR metadata to display".

this option exists for debug only don't ever change it.
you can not use the video as the master clock is technically not a good idea.
to use the video as master clock you need to change the audio which is utterly impossible with bit streaming.

there is reclock and SM for a reason.

you hope he releases a version of madVR that works properly with win 11 or you just stick to win 10.

i don't likie to be the guy say new window bad. i mean you have 8 identifications i'm at 244 and i reported this bug many many month ago nothing changed in that regard. hdr output was broken too also reported like 6 month ago.

madVR and win 11 are not meant for each other for now it's just the case.

Interesting, it did not occur to me that smooth motion could be used to solve this issue.

I did a test playing 23.976fps scrolling movie credits with monitor @ 23.800hz so I could see how smooth motion handles 1 frame drop every 5 seconds.

The algorithm doesn't seem designed for this kind of application as the motion blurring is active 4/5ths of the time and only becomes clearer for the remaining 5th. I was hoping it would be the other way around so that it only needs to blur for 1/5th of the time.

I don't think my audio clock is an issue since my target monitor hz for no frame drops is 23.9756hz , so the audio clock would only be off by 0.0004hz ?

The reason I gave up on NVCP is because I saw it only lets me specify to the nearest 0.001hz which isn't enough precision. But actually that setting is misleading because you can still control more decimal places by setting other values like total pixels & porch.

So I can let MadVR do its optimisation process and then copy its recommended timing into NVCP custom resolution. For the refresh rate I just enter the first 3 decimal places without rounding.

Alternatively use the calculator linked previously to manually calculate what the timing parameters need to be.

well that is all explained in the guide nvidia sometime (not farm from generally) doesn't like it when other software tries to create a custom refreshrate.

yes on 120 is close to perfect.
the avg response time of VA LCDs is worse then the blurred image is shown anyway.

on 60 HZ i can easily spot the "blurred" frames and notice it at 120 not so sure...

It can't be that bad -- NVidia and AMD have custom res tool in their official driver. If it was risky and 99.999% of users won't even use it, they wouldn't include it.

Actually I got 3 hard system freezes when testing custom resolutions, but that turned out to be cause I left MPC-HC with MadVR window open to monitor the actual hz during tuning. After closing the MPC window it stopped freezing.

This update fix it, no need to use the old MadVR, the new version works just as before and have more settings.

Have MadVR installed and Replace the MadVR files with these file from the zip and you won't have HDR or identification issues anymore.

It can't be that bad -- NVidia and AMD have custom res tool in their official driver. If it was risky and 99.999% of users won't even use it, they wouldn't include it.

Actually I got 3 hard system freezes when testing custom resolutions, but that turned out to be cause I left MPC-HC with MadVR window open to monitor the actual hz during tuning. After closing the MPC window it stopped freezing.

What's the best way to improve the seeking? With MadVR 0.92.7 I had the seeking very fast for 1 second forward or back, now if I move forward or back it sometimes freezes the image and seek or randomly work like it should. I tried all the Sync and Rendering buffer and anything in the madvr menus. nothing actually fix it. it's very annoying because I like to seek parts in the movies 1 sec every time... with the Potplayer D3D11 render it works perfectly, just with some jitter after the seeking, but it works every time I seek 1 sec image is moving. My 6900xt utilization is not even 65-75% usage so it can't be GPU processing, though the rendering goes through the roof when seeking more time 220ms or so, it wasn't like that..

i'm not sure if it is even possible anymore to see the hardware decoder usage on AMD anymore.

the "decoder block" is called UVD you can still see it in GPU-Z but just the frequency.

try your luck with letting madVR calculating the best value for your screen and current audio clock because your audio clock does not seem to agree with your targeted 23.967023.

No. Only if your TV is LG C9 with actual HDMI VIC that supports 1.001 multiplier. VRR with mpv should be able to do it too though on x2 fps.

i just say that the shown first number in the madVR OSD is relative to the CPU. even if the CPU has nothing to do with GPU audio sync the first line is about CPU and GPU clocks not audio.
what has accuracy to do with that and java script and an webpage to do with any of that? seriously what do you even have a slight clue what you are talking about.

and it's a good thing they disagree so intel should stop selling CPU because the CPU agree with the GPU and even the audio because they share the same clock generator...

Why dah? The NVCP custom res tool reports an incorrect third decimal place value for the refresh rate, and gives the user the impression that it is adjusting the pixel clock to match the user-specified refresh rate, pixel count, porch & sync width.

It was only after using CRU as a calculator to plug in all the values from NVCP that I could logically deduce NVCP is altering the pixel clock in such a way that isn't compatible with the user-specified refresh rate, and then confirming this in Ctrl+J.

So it turns out neither CRU or MadVR can apply my target refresh rate for 0 frame skips, but for whatever reason NVCP can.

So I can let MadVR do its optimisation process and then copy its recommended timing into NVCP custom resolution. For the refresh rate I just enter the first 3 decimal places without rounding.

Alternatively use the calculator linked previously to manually calculate what the timing parameters need to be.


Well the above only ended up working for 1080p23.

For 1080p59 I couldn't get NVCP to give me an actual refresh rate that I wanted -- same problem with it snapping/rounding to nearest 0.002hz which isn't enough precison. In the end, nudging the NVCP value by 0.001hz did the trick and I got a good mode with 1 repeat every 16 hours or so. But I feel like I only got it on a fluke and the whole thing is super dodgy and doesn't really work properly. The whole process took 2 hours and I was about to give up.

Plus there are so may other horrid little bugs with NVCP's custom resolutions that make it very difficult to use. I am sure the average user would get blown up by all the bugs and wouldn't have a clue what mode they are in or what they created.

For example the modes you see in NVCP are not the modes seen by the system and MadVR, which are the ones in Windows's screen resolution GUI. NVCP calls 59hz 60hz and 23hz 24hz in custom resolutions and deletes the 60 & 24 from the main modes so you can't even switch back to them which you need to do since you can't be in the same mode you're adjusting. If you open a custom mode for editing, the refresh rate is all wrong and if you saved it you would destroy it. Also custom modes blank out the colour format option without telling you what it is (I need YCbCr as my TV sucks at RGB) but just so happens to always use the last selected one from main modes. What a nightmare, so glad my .000 modes don't need tuning.

I've always been on Intel for graphic card for the longest time and all refresh rates work perfectly with no need for custom resolutions. But, now to push my MadVR settings further, I am finally switching back to NVDIA after almost 10 years. I'm still waiting for my RTX3090 to arrive. Are there any issues with this card playing 23.976 at 3840x2160p? Do I still need to come up with custom refresh rate for 23.976? If so, can someone share their exact settings and method for 3840x2160 23.976 custom refresh for madVR? Also, I'll be on windows 11 if that matters. Thanks for any help/advice.

EDIT: I do use bitstreaming through WASAPI to my receiver and If out of the box for the RTX3090, the drop is only seen in 1-2 hours, then I'm okay with that as I always pause the movie multiple times to head to the bathroom or grab something to eat :)

Your JVC projector almost certainly supports 23.976hz and probably defines that mode in its EDID so you will probably get a 23hz mode appearing in NVCP by default. Although NVCP may or may not incorrectly label it 24hz. If in doubt see Windows display settings as that seems to correctly differentiate between 23 and 24.

The other issue is that on ctrl+J you may get 1 dropped frame every x minutes and if that bothers you then one solution is to nudge the refresh rate slightly by like 0.0005hz via a custom res until the drops are minimised to your satisfaction.

Yeah I would be ok with 1-2 hours. Actually that's what my R9 380 gets without having to touch anything and I was using that without complaint. But then after swapping GPU for 1070 I got a drop every 12 minutes which I tried to ignore but it was too noticeable so I had to do something and here we are.

Do you use the Windows 11 New right click Context or the Classic Full context menus using the Registry? Because I have 2 windows installation which are almost identical, one I use the classic and the other one I use the new and on the new it works 100% of the times even with 0.92.7..

Could this bloody be related? they are almost 100% identical os, I used the same windows backup image to install windows 11 on the new windows with the classic registry. 100% of the other registries and apps are exactly the same.

Fuck sake, it stopped working even with the newest, why the hell it work on my other OS and not on this one.

Do you have PowerShell 7 installed?? I noticed that's the only difference I have on the two OS, one has installed 7.1.5 and the other have 7.2.2, so I uninstalled 7.1.5 and installed 7.2.2 and I see if that's fixed it.

EDIT: Make sure you set 10bit or higher on Bit Depth!!!! DON'T USE AUTO!!!! I sat like 1 hour just to understand it works fine with 10bit instead on Auto!!

I also disable everything on Display Modes, but it works the same with it enabled for me at least.

I can't understand why it works perfectly on my other windows 11 installation with same everything !! 100% of the times and it's set to AUTO! with 0.92.7!!!

I use Let Madvr decide. can't understand what the bloody different, same GPU Drivers and everything else.

Update me if it fixed your issue!! Works fine now on my Main OS 100% of the times. I'm finally DONE ( I think it's also related to GPU OVERCLOCK!) with my 6900xt if I go overboard with GPU Clock Frequency even if the game works and I try to play a video it would reset it back to 8bit after I exit the game! even when it worked fine right before it! or if you go too far it would crash and it would work 8bit no until you close explorer or sign off etc. Because that's what I didn't do on my other OS!!! Funny yes! :cool::cool::cool:

I also updated Anydesk from 7.0.4 to 7.0.7 and Teamviewer from 15.26 to 15.28.5. I even tried lower LavFilters 75 didn't change anything at the time when Bit Depth was Auto.

I was able to consistently reproduce this in Jriver MediaCenter and on MPC-HC running MadVR v0.92.17 and 113.

Upon closer inspection ... its not just subtitles but OSD too

My guess ... for 3D movies that have "with right eye first" ... MadVR swaps not just video frames for eyes ... but rendered overlays too (subtitles and OSD), which it should not as overlays will be brought "inside" the screen causing perception problems

I reckon smooth motion would be an ideal solution to the "1 frame drop every..." problem, if it could be modified to only blend for a few frames either side of the frame drop, and leave the rest of the frames untouched.

eg. if you're playing 23.976 video & have a frame drop every 10 minutes (14385 frames) then smooth motion could blend across, say, frames 14382 to 14388 and leave the rest alone.

If I'm imagining how SM algorithm works, perhaps this could be trivial to implement by something like complementing and rounding its internal blend coefficient.

Well the idea is to minimise the amount of frame blending and therefore minimise the amount of blur.

From what I can tell by looking at it, SM is just a simple weighted frame blending based on how "far" the current video frame is between refresh cycles.

Maybe SVP can do it better.
