Just a quick query as I'm not sure if it has been brought up before. I'm wondering how madVR handles the 2:1 Univisium format being used more often by netflix (star trek discovery) etc? Can madVR pick it up in in its black bar detection etc?

Does madVR show "(DXVA11)" at the end of the 4th line in the Ctrl+J OSD when these freezes occur?
No, it didn't. I just tried it again and it stays on "D3D9 exclusive (new path)" when the freeze image issue happens.
What you see in this video I recorded a couple of days earlier is what I get every time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ljlp67uHH_0
And right now I literally have no clue anymore whether my gpu is able to handle HEVC or not.
For instance these messages by sneaker_ger and huhn they claim my card (GTX 650 Ti) isn't HEVC compatible:
I don't know what is causing it but I would recommend to simply deactivate hardware decoding for HEVC and move on. Neither i7-4770k nor GTX 650 Ti have ASIC for HEVC. Not worth the trouble.
no a 970 can't do it you need a 960/950 or newer card pascal card.
and of cause you need new hardware for new codecs how could a GPU old than a new codec have fixed function hardware decoder for it?
even 1030 has a fixed function hardware decoder so no need for high end hardware you just need new hard.
But then a guy named Chros said my card is able to decode HEVC just fine, maybe not with 10bit hevc or with 4k hevc files, but 8bit will do just fine.
And the video in question is 8bit so that means it should be able to run just fine, I guess.
Actually it is. :) But only with <=1080p, 8bit hevc! (So not with 4k hevc, neither with 10bit 1080p hevc.)
It's based on Kepler architecture, as my laptop card (see my signature, along with the driver version I use), and it works the same way for me as well.
Here is the mediainfo output of the video file. Just in case you want to take a look at it (again):
https://pastebin.com/p2M9X2QM
Even the video (Annabelle.2014.BluRay.1080p.H265-20-40) is just a lousy 300mb re-encode, it's not even a real 1080p encode.
But right now I'm still pretty stunned that the video file did play "freeze image" free using EVR and VMR9 and not with madVR. The only way is by unticking HEVC in LAV video.
So if you require any further information, I will be happy to provide it.

Do you mean the toggle "HDR and Advanced Color"? I've never heard yet of this toggle automatically enabling itself! Are you on some fast track Windows 10 beta build, maybe?
Yes, that toggle.
I'm not using any beta build.
I just updated to the latest nvidia drivers (387.92) (Also using latest madvr and LAV nightly).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XcVMMBUVTmE
It looks like it's using both, nvidia and windows hdr, at the same time. Sometimes it works, sometimes colours look washed out.
I've unistalled everything and installed it back again. Not sure what else to do.
Edit- Rolled back to the previous nvidia driver. It's now working. I still need to open and close the player a few times before it displays hdr colours correctly though. It' s a hit and miss for me.

TTempSmooth is a multi-frame algorithm, while RRN is a single-frame algorithm. Generally, multi-frame algorithms have an advantage for random noise (and grain) removal, because random noise and grain are (supposed to be) different in each frame while the actual image content stays more or less static (unless there's motion in the scene). If you want to compare RRN with other algorithms, please pick single-frame algorithms for comparison purposes. I do plan to look into multi-frame algorithms in the future, but it's not too easy. For best results you basically need some sort of motion compensation, or at least motion detection. And if that compensation or detection goes wrong, you can end up with pretty bad artifacts. For now I wanted to start with a single-frame noise reduction algorithm, because it's easier to implement and less dangerous in terms of adding weird artifacts.
I see your point and it was what I have suspected... I've never liked single-frame algo for denoising. If I compare to what I remember then your algo is the best I've seen in this category, definitely not bad but not to my taste.
Could you at least give the choice to select a lower strength?
But on the other hand, I'm still amazed of what you have achieved with your RCA :o Each time I've tested this type of algo, I've ended up using a very low strength that made little to no difference. Your algo is definitely different, I think I will use it on all my DVDs!

I never said it shouldn't work. I'm just saying it's not worth the bother. It works just fine with software decoding, doesn't it?

Hybrid decoding (like HEVC on Kepler cards) is generally best to stay away from. Its usually slow and often presents problems if the GPU is under high load (ie. with high madVR settings).

God bless you nevertheless madshi regarding Dolby Vision :)
Question though: is there a "faster" way to at least ehm show that Dolby Vision is running in the information overview?
Cause when I play a Dolby Vision TS file nothing indicates that this is even Dolby Vision. Then when I convert it via MKVToolNix Dolby Vision doesnt work anymore but the MPC info is more or less the same.
Is there a way to show if DV is active(even though not working via MPC)? :)

Here's a comparison on overly compressed SD MPEG2 cable source:
Off (https://s1.postimg.org/5h3u0wmbbj/Boyz_Nthe_Hood_off.png)
Reduce Compression Artifacts @ 3 (https://s1.postimg.org/5z6n3nxewv/Boyz_Nthe_Hood_RCA3.png)
Reduce Random Noise @ 1 (https://s1.postimg.org/6yzhuzwten/Boyz_Nthe_Hood_RRN1.png)
RCA has to be pushed a bit to get results on really bad source, but when watching the content in motion I prefer RRN at 1 even though it smothes a bit too much. I concur that a lower RRN setting would be best. :thanks:
Edit: after testing RRN @ 2 , I also find that 1 is stronger.

Looking for where to try "reduce compression artifacts" or "reduce random noise", I have 0.92.6 installed (I have profiles 7 to be exact), but can not find these options on any screen. I hate to delete profiles, as it takes so much time to recreate them from scratch.
I've attached some screenshots, but I'm not finding them.
Thanks,

If I use madvr and enable "delay playback until renderer is full" the taskbar indicator (is it called that way?) displays pause and yellow color progress of file. Is that something that can be fixed? In MPC-BE or madvr?
Tested with 0.92.4. Currently I‘m not in Germany, so I can‘t test 0.92.5 and 0.92.6 with my equipment.

Black bar detection does not use known aspect ratios, it simply removes black borders.
That said, madVR does know about that aspect ratio and even labels it as univisium in its OSD.

Have you had a chance to compare the new Adaptive Sharpen to the old one? Would like your feedback on that, if you find some time to compare.
Always liked Adaptive Sharpen and I just took your word it was nicer than the old version. It's stronger isn't it? I did find myself reducing the level to 0.2/0.3 when running with NGU Sharp. I also like sharpen edges and enhance detail enabled together.. When I was tinkering I realized I now had to decide whether I use NGU Sharp and lower sharpening levels or NGU standard and higher levels. Then whether edge sharpening and enhancing details were worth keeping enabled with an improved Adaptive Sharpen and how they compared to it. I'm tempted to look at all this over the next few days with various content.

Sounds great! Maybe you could post 2-3 "before vs after" screenshots which showcase the improvement you're seeing?
Here are a couple of screen shots. These are up-scaled from 480p to 4k, with the "reduce random noise /process chroma channels, too" both ticked and set to strength 1. It looks real good from my viewing distance of around six feet (188.66 cm) from a 55 inch (139.7 cm) OLED 4k TV. :D

I think than the best I can do is chroma upscaling= ngu soft medium and image upscalling NGU Sharp medium without entering in frame drops , or what you saying is do even less on chroma , if that so, which scaler you choose.

Amazing new algorithms there, even if I will not use them, because I have to enable them manually every time and they are not useful for all videos.
A little bug : RRN at 1 is stronger than RRN at 2.
@madshi Do you plan to improve the RRA and RDH algos ?
I am still using aviSynth with FineDehalo because RRA + RDH is not good with NGU (Source / MadVR RRA + RDH / FineDehalo) :
https://s1.postimg.org/5nt0kcgwln/Source.png (https://postimg.org/image/5nt0kcgwln/) https://s1.postimg.org/1fdtaioy2z/Mad_VR_RRA_RDH.png (https://postimg.org/image/1fdtaioy2z/) https://s1.postimg.org/2472ujbeij/Fine_Dehalo.png (https://postimg.org/image/2472ujbeij/)
FineDehalo works very well with NGU, but madVR RRA + RDH creates undesired artifacts around the edges.
Anyway, keep up the good work :thanks:

Looks like the new AS sharpens more edges, I'd say the new version's sharpness of 0.7-0.8 matches the old 1.0, some areas are much sharper others not so much.
This new AS sharpens the edges of shadowing and lots of inner details which the old one didn't, as it focused more on just the stronger lines which made it very nice for anime.
Comparing new AS 0.7 to old 1.0 I'm finding is that I'm not getting the line sharpness I did (would have to boost to 1.0 to achieve this) but minor shadowing edges are quite visually oversharpened.
I'll look at it on some standard content but you'd probably hate me saying this but..

I'm trying to add a custom resolution in 95.6 using the custon resolution but it is impossible (nvidia). I start my making sure the display is in a different refreshrate than I want to change. I then choose the edit option, then I hit the test option which changes the refreshrate and then brings up window with countdown timer asking if I want to save the setting. At this point I choose yes. I then get an error saying you 'cant modify the active mode' and it then reverts back to the previous mode and the custom resolution is not saved.
Is there a workaround for this?
update, I have gone back to 095.4 to get around this issue. After adding the custom resolution I also noticed there is no way to set the bitdepth. This means the added resolution may be 8bit only, is this a known issue?

Why madvr doesn't switch to the automatic 1080p25p from 4K ?
I set it
1080p23, 1080p24, 1080p25, 2160p23, 2160p24, 2160p25, 2160p30, 2160p60
But it even go to 4K60 Hz instead staying 4K59 Hz which what I use default for everything.
What's making specifically in this movie to cause it to go from 4K 59 Hz to 4K 60 Hz instead 1080p25p ?
Using madvr 0.92.6 + Potplayer x64 + LavFilter 0.70.2.79
EDIT : If I delete all the 2160p it goes to 1080p25p correctly. but why it happens only with this movie that I need to delete all the 2160 ones ?

for 25 hz madVR has to assume it is interlanced. so something wrong with 2160p50?
adding 1080p23 and 2160p23 makes 1080p23 obsolete BTW.

The new nvidia driver 387.92 totally broke HDR for me as well.
It will automatically turn on the windows 10 "HDR and advanced color" setting when playing a HDR video, causing both of my screens to flicker for like 10 seconds and then show a messed up HDR picture.
Reverted back to 385.69 where it's working nicely.

EDIT: I believe that the step that is missing is this:
When you hit "Yes" (to save) it should change the active mode back to the original and THEN save the custom mode.

Madshi, maybe you could add a heuristic "quality" value? That could be used as a parameter in the preset selection script. Would be very useful particularly for the various processing algos.
I was thinking a value from 1 (very low) to 5 (very high). This value could be determined based the video format (FourCC) and the bits per pixel. The latter value is not known directly yet. Perhaps LAV Filters could export the bitrate (if known). Otherwise a rough estimate could be made using file size and duration.

Yes same issue for me with this drivers.. it blinks twice and the colour is messed
and it doesn't revert back to non hdr mode.
maybe it's good for games like BF1 ? and not good for movies, if anyone can check
So now not just HDR in games might messed up if they didn't fix it, also HDR movies, and the 3D wizard still if anyone checked ?? I mean wtf nvidia are doing, just adding more bugs.
But at least to fix the Colour issue with HDR you can enable HDR before and enter the movie, or just Enter Full Screen or Full Windowed mode and it will fix it.

Interesting, I didn't expect "RRN" to handle blocking better than "RCA"! So is there anything RCA does better than RRN for your use case?
No, I definitely prefer RCA because a) RRN is texture detail killer; b) RCA better removes mosquito noise.

That certainly sounds to me like a reasonable thing to do. I can think of problems that would occur if it were not done this way.
In madVR 92.3, this situation was handled properly and everything worked fine. In 92.4, the Nvidia user interface was changed (generally for the better) and (in 92.6 at least) this part of it is no longer done properly.
So, I want to emphasize that this a madVR problem, not an Nvidia one.

Indeed. I wouldn't mind if Madshi would drop the idea of the changed (better?) interface and go back to the 0.92.3 interface.

I agree, set both to 1 for a look and the image was very flat. Neither were nicer than the original. An issue I see is the quality of the source file. Is the filter applied before or after everything else? The nature of the functions it should be applied before. If it were much weaker at low settings it would be more usable. In Windows task manager I noticed it uses a couple of percent more GPU than disabled. The GPU used seems to be more? than applying NGU. Post is meant as feedback and discussion, the sound of criticism was unintentional :).

If you still think you need different luma vs chroma strengths, you can now use the file tags (e.g. "deblock=4 deblockChroma=8"). The settings dialog doesn't support this atm, though.
I retested those LP videos using the new build, and I think it looks best with "deblock=3 deblockChroma=5". So not a huge difference, but I think the chroma can take a bit more punishment before you start to lose any important details (at least on these videos). The deblocking filter definitely helps these videos a lot!
In general I think I'd like it if I could enable chroma deblocking without enabling luma deblocking at all, for videos where the luma channel is fine but the chroma channels need some help. Or do you think that would just be a waste of cycles for something imperceptible? I'd like to think that some deblocking might help the chroma upscaler do a better job.

Can somone please explain to me what happens in a situation where windows (win7) only allows one to set 12bit HDMI output in its drivers control panel (nvidia) , madVR only have a setting of 10bit or greater and D3D11 10bit?
I have a 2016 LG E6 OLED and denon x2300w. I have nvidia control panel set to 12bit, madVR set to 10 bit or greater and using D3D11 exclusive mode (madVR reports it is 10bit). While a video is playing with these settings I can go into the AVR and get a report of the resolution, it is reported that it is received a 12bit 4k resolution while madVR reports D3D11 10bit. So you see there is a discrepency between 10bit and 12bit.
My question then, in this setup, what part of My pc is handling the 10bit to 12bit conversion? Is it MadVR or the graphics card? From my understanding the E6 can handle both 10bit and 12bit resolutions but win7 gives no option for 10bit and I can see the output remains 12bit while madVR reports 10bit. Does madVR require a 12bit setting in the device settings also?

@ Madshi. MPC-BE and 92_6.
When clicking stop during playback MPC-BE restarts playback from beginning !! When using EVR-CP playback stops as it should. I had the buggy v92_5 installed. Maybe that's some sideeffect ?

To use 12 Bit I think you need Quadro card ? or 12 bit is just for Dolby Vision because HDR is 10 bit .
It is still confusing for me also, MadVR only support 10 bit anyway, you can't choose more in the Bit depth .
Btw , what is the default CPU Queue size, GPU queue size is 8 as I remember. do I need it to be CPU half more than GPU Queue or 12 ?
