I would say that everything j82k has noted about the LGs has been correct, as I've measured/noticed most of these issues. Unfortunately there is no catch all solution to these problems. PC mode is required for any type of gaming in SDR, general Windows usage, and since the graphics cards operate in RGB 4:4:4 internally (thus madVR), there is reason to use RGB 4:4:4. Movies are not exempt here either if using an HTPC. Game mode in SDR is not worth testing as it provides no calibration options for white point or color, is forced into a wide color space, and do not support 4:4:4. While I can always see the slight banding in SDR on patterns, I rarely if ever see it in games or movies that isn't there in the source. HDMI mode smooths over the gradients, but doesn't really always get rid of the banding either. But then you also get losses from 4:4:4 to 4:2:2. HDMI mode aside from Game also has very bad input lag which can cause audio delays.

When watch movies you use game or desktop modes with 4:4:4 chroma, because 4:4:4 chroma. And reported about bad picture (banding). I miss something?

I was just trying to make others aware of these issues.
Also I've never said that I use game mode. The only time I mentioned it was in relation to figuring out if these issues could be related to modes that offer the lowest possible input lag.
And then you jump in, making some false statements, even telling me which modes/picture presets I should use...
I don't even use my TV for windows tasks, this is just about video content played via madVR.

I haven't really watched HDR movies with 12-bit output so not sure how visible this is in content but when checking the 25% saturation HDR color ramps from this pattern package, they look worse with nvidia 12-bit/madVR 10-bit compared to 8-bit. That is in standard HDMI mode.

Yes, i understood you care about setup for yourself. And yes, here i'm wrong :( I'm some confused, because you talking about bad settings and issues, making some tests and different modes comparisons in custom scenarios, but ignore some starting points from user manual.

Maybe it is different for me as my LG OLED is from 2016, but I use Home Theater mode for windows & UHD player. If I put him on PC mode everything looks overly white
I have no problems with HT mode , HDR , MadVR, everything works fine and looks great
Of course Game Mode for Xbox / PS4....

While I don't want to get much further into this, my statements were dependent on whether the user cares about accuracy in white point, color, etc. with regards to the source and what you expect/can deal with negatives of each option. This also implies you are only using ISF (Cinema/Technicolor for HDR, Game Mode HDR for games) with the expected configuration/calibration. I can't speak to what looks good to someone else as I don't know their settings and sometimes these might not matter much depending on content. However, Game Mode for SDR is absolutely garbage for the reasons listed, but it does have the low input lag needed. I would suggest you try getting PC Mode configured properly for at least games instead (setting your game system/PC to RGB 4:4:4 Full and matching TV settings would get you started).
PC Mode ISF in SDR should look almost exactly the same (not counting 4:4:4 vs 4:2:2, banding, input lag and 23 Hz judder) as HT in ISF using the exact same settings. This means white point, brightness, and contrast should not be any different, so I would make sure Full/Limited is set correctly relative to the GPU settings.
Edit: Sorry, I wrongly assumed you had a 2016 LG B6, I did not even notice the actual TV you have. Anything I said might not actually apply to you at all as I don't know anything about that range of models.

I know I previously said all configurations would lead to increased color banding in pc-mode.
But YCbCr444 might actually be ok to use in pc-mode on the LG C8. :)
At least it seems that way from a few comparison measurements I did and also by looking at the 16-bit gradient pattern. Only tested SDR 8-bit so far.
I know fullRGB should theoretically provide the best results but what can you do when the TV messes it up...

Measurement has been done with the ISF Dark preset, all picture enhancements disabled, oled-light 25 (100nits), 20% pattern intensity as the errors are more visible in the lower luminance range.
The magenta sweep looks very bad in any configuration but with fullRGB PC-mode it's atrocious. :eek:

If YCbCr444 doesn't produce banding, correct me if I'm off base here, doesn't that signify that the TV *might* be processing everything internally in that format and that receiving RGB and converting it is maybe what's causing the banding? Or am I just being dense here...

Its probably just a really shitty processing chip, or its being configured rather wrong in PC RGB mode.
TVs usually shouldn't have a reason to use YCbCr internally, since the panel is in RGB, and LUT adjustments etc should be done in RGB as well.
But then, manufacturers like to save a few bucks even on a $2000 TV, and you get shit like 4:2:2 subsampling in movie mode. You can't subsample RGB like that, so it has to use YCbCr internally at some point (and even worse, subsampled). Probably just for silly reasons, like the video processor being just bad like that.
I wonder if review sites like rtings.com test 4:4:4 in non-PC mode, or at least check for banding issues in PC mode, I should check one of their latest reviews for such info (Edit: apparently not quite as detailed).

They got 1 corrected table, and slaps it on all modes, (which) causes the corruption in RGB, as that is the wrong table.
OR
They enable the table for YCbCr and Disable it for Native RGB. __ As in the panel itself is RGB but its response is not entirely linear, thereby exhibiting its raw behavior in RGB mode.
__ This second case is much more likely than the first.
__ That PC mode is likely the raw, uncorrected color response of the oled panel .

There is no current way to test this. I would assume Dolby Vision would be more subtle compared to any of the dynamic tone mapping solutions for HDR10, but they are both frame-based. The results would be dictated more by the tone mapping algorithm used because frame-based metadata is merely a guide for tone mapping.
Dolby Vision is an independent, second layer, so it could be any bit depth. The extra two bits can lessen banding of the specular highlights when dithered down to 10-bits by providing a better source. That is one notable advantage.

I gotta retract my statement about 23/24 Hz in pc-mode causing 3:2 pulldown judder on the LG C8.
They must have fixed this at one point via firmware update without mentioning it in the update notes.
I used rtings pulldown-judder test and it seems to have proper 5:5 cadence in pc-mode now even without the greyed out real cinema option. I did that same test last year and there would always be judder when outputting 23/24 Hz in pc-mode.

Are you sure you are still in PC Mode when you tested ybcr444? I know that for some configurations (resolution, frequency, format), the LG will throw you out of PC Mode, defaulting to the HDMI processing without actually telling you. 1080p 23Hz I know does this on my B7. You can tell by making sure none of the greyed out options like real cinema return. I haven't actually tried your config since that will still limit me to the limited color range, but may be worth it if it reduces banding while keeping 4:4:4.

I haven't yet got the latest firmware update but for my C8 in PC mode, Real Cinema is greyed out at all refresh rates and it definitely seems to do 3:2 pulldown at 23p. Haven't done a formal test but I did look at end credits which were very choppy vs smooth out of PC mode with Real Cinema enabled.
I thought ycbcr from a PC was considered a poor option? I'm not sure I'd want to use PC mode just for 4:4:4 chroma anyway but then I only use my HTPC for movie playback.

Just use the components (madVR, LAV Filters, a PCF.xml, your choice of any player(s), and an applicable .bat(s) if any) seamlessly with Kodi v.18.2 or any other version now or in the future. I simply install new Kodi builds/versions and leave the rest of the setup in place. Takes about 1 minute to upgrade from 17.1 to 18.2 for instance. I do nightlies everyday. Same with updating any of the other components should you desire to.

Yes I just double checked.
In pc-mode fullRGB looks terrible, limited RGB is better and ycbcr444 has the least amount of banding, similar to non-pc mode I'd say. Of course using the correct chain in each mode.
This doesn't really make sense but it is what it is. Maybe it's just a bug. LG doesn't seem to care much about pc-mode. Their oleds also were using the wrong color gamut when using HDR in pc-mode and that bug lasted from my 2016 C6 and was still present on the C8 when I got it but it got fixed at one point....
I've never seen the TV automatically switch between hdmi modes, how would a pc even be able to control that?

Yes that was actually the configuration I used in non-pc mode recently and the first one I tested in pc-mode. It was better than a full full full chain but still worse than ycbcr444.
Maybe they fixed the 3:2 pulldown problem when outputting 24Hz in pc-mode with 04.10.31.
I'm absoluteley sure that last year when I tested this it couldn't do proper 5:5 cadence in pc-mode.
edit: I still have the measurements, here is a gif of "limited 8bit - full RGB 8bit - limited vs ycbcr444" in pc-mode. The better one being ycbcr444.

I've been using Kodi for more than 14 years, I've gone through every Windows solution, including external players, it's not as if I do not know about them.
In any case, I've posted a $500 bounty (https://forum.kodi.tv/showthread.php?tid=223175&pid=2836488#pid2836488) on DSPlayer thread on Kodi.tv, for a perfectly working Kodi DSPlayer 18.2. If anybody wishes to join in the effort to attract a developer, feel free. I know it's not a lot of money but maybe, just maybe, merging changes from 18.2 to the current DSPlayer 17.6 will not be too hard. As I have no way of knowing, I couldn't think of anything else to do.

A little confused about the Madvr Envy. At first, I thought, $200-300.
So in another thread, madshi said it's gonna cost -alot more- than an hd fury. Because internally, paraphrasing Madshi, the envy device MAY HAVE multiple components which each by themselves cost more than an hdfury device.
OK, let's say, low estimate of $600.. That's the price of an rtx 2080.
Is such a device going to have as much processing power as a mass market 2080 ?
Even coding super tight to hardware metal, Wouldn't it still make more sense to go HTPC w/ 2080, because the htpc-gpu will be much easier to expand and update ?

You can always use a HTPC - for me the attraction is ease of use. I can use a Shield and plug it into the Envy and it'll just work. No freakin driver issues, worrying about passthrough working, windows updates etc. Just look at this thread when I mentioned the HDR passthrough was broken in recent Nvidia drivers. 3D lut will also attract projector users and those not wanting for fork out for software licenses for the 2019 auto-cal OLEDs
It'll also work with things like Netflix. I think I consume more than 50% of my HDR material on Netflix now which MadVR can't touch. You can get the 1080p Web-DL's sure, but not the 4k stuff.

I currently am in a 1080p configuration. GTX660, 1080p plasma screen.
This year is most likely the year I'll switch to 4K OLED. I would need to change video card. Now, with a regular "HTPC approach" I would need to buy, say, at least a GTX 1060. And probably, to get the best out of madVR I might decide to fork out more money for a RTX2060.
If madVR Envy does what I hope it does, I might decide to buy a GTX 1030, for simple decoding purposes, and then offload all the video processing to Envy. Kodi does allow now for whitelisting resolutions and I could output unscaled and let madVR Envy handle everything.
madVR quality, Kodi updated builds, problem solved.

It depends really, I listened to all the advice and got a used perfect condition 1070 8GB for £205 from Ebay and the difference is amazing.
Maybe if people have lots of money, but we are talking about people spending £7k+ on projectors, so I am in a different league against that outlay for watching movies.

I didn't get the impression that professionals are the target customers. I think it'll be for consumers who have multi-thousand dollar home theater installations who wouldn't mind dropping another thousand or two on a madVR-quality rendering device. HTPCs clash with the room decor. ;)

Disc Player Hardware, they're unmoddable, a bit more unpredictable, and won't ever have the accuracy of madvr even with envy in the loop.
The Envy is not-Not-useful, it certainly is useful for various scenarios, but if we're after BEST QUALITY + ease of Improvements, we simply can't cut the PC out of the loop.
(And if that's the case), how does cost/ benefit ratio work out with another $600 device ontop of an ~$800 PC.

This is of course all in the perspective of a Playback consumer device.
It seems more likely from Madshi's language that Envy may be a pro-tool, which would plug into other pro-tools which have been calibrated to reference.

I'm very happy with Netflix HDR/Dolby Vision. They consistently have the best HDR I've ever seen. Sabrina, for example, looked phenomenal. Their creators really know how to use HDR well. The bitrate could be higher, but what I care about is content I can enjoy in the best quality. MadVR Envy will enable this on my x9000. I have no way of watching Netflix HDR on my projector in good quality currently. If there was no Widevine it'd be easy!
Other benefit a 3D LUT on every source.
My experience has been different to yours with HTPC - now I'm setup it's working fine and I know to keep my drivers rolled back, disable windows update etc. but it was a long learning curve of around 2 weeks of tinkering. It was pretty frustrating.

I may be missing the point here, but the only way I can get HDR on Netflix is to either use the TV App, or use Windows 10 HDR which obviously trashes the desktop.
So how is an Envy going to fix that ?

Use any of the dedicated players out there. I have an apple TV, Shield and I think my Panasonic UHD supports Netflix HDR. HDR on Windows with Netflix is poor, no proper metadata

In that case you can use something like an apple tv 4k. You set atv to hd60p so your home screen looks normal(sdr). But you can also enable range matching, so that when you start hdr content on the netflix app it would simply switch to 24p hdr.
Now envy can simply do is thing on the output. Eg. Tone map the hdr to sdr etc.

That's the confusing issue atm, as a Pro-tool, the envy works fine, since source agnostic might be a must.
As a entertainment consumer device , The price/ performance favors HTPC.
For consumers HTPC has a large upperhand because it does things other than movies. So if you got $600 extra, you can get Envy for movies, or 2080gtx for Movies and Games.
Maybe madshi will make an Envy-Lite, or Mad-Lut, Lutbox for $200.. :D

Unfortunately, the future doesn't favor HTPCs, as streaming services are losting features on them and are generally terrible UX on a 10ft PC (they are designed for mouse usage most of the time), nevermind that you basically cannot run them through madVR anyway.
And even if you're sailing the high seas, 4K HDR content is not always available, since thats using the highest protections they have.
If you watch a lot of Netflix, Amazon Prime etc, then a $50 FireTV is just so much nicer.
And any other form of content is slowly receding.
So basically, a HTPC may be nicer in some aspects, but its all irrelevant if the content isn't even available, and a HTPC also does no good if you can't use madVR in the first place.

And any other form of content is slowly receding.
So basically, a HTPC may be nicer in some aspects, but its all irrelevant if the content isn't even available, and a HTPC also does no good if you can't use madVR in the first place.
You wouldn't do it this way, but, we can put a 2080gtx Inside a $200 , (old sandybridge/ivy bridge/haswell boxes), totaling $800, and it will work just as well as any high end HTPC with regard to madvr.
Netflix is a valid case if tone mapping is that important to the user.
But overall, someone who watches alot of netflix is less commonly the target for a High-End video device, since netflix has low bitrate, ontop of poor quality control on the encoding side.
Could Envy improve whatever comes out of that, SURE, but benefits are iffy.
4K hdr bluray is not going away anytime soon. They've invested massive infrastructure in this.

I am watching Netflix on Xbox One X since it gives me HDR and Atmos. I was using the shield before which I would still use if Netflix would run with Atmos. Netflix HDR and Atmos on PC app is a mess especcially with a JVC and pink bug.
So being able to have whatever source being processed by a madvr box would be great :)

Hi everyone.
Can I ask, have there been any bugs regarding just turning on 'automatically detect hard coded black bars' causing video freezes for a second or two, and then rushing to catch up. With audio continuing to play in sync. Repeats randomly every 3-10 minutes of viewing whilst 'automatically detect hard coded black bars' is checked.
Zoomplayer Max (latest beta), latest madvr. Win7x64. GTX670.
Might be just isolated to me and my really old computer. But I've managed to track what ever 'it' is down to just turning on 'automatically detect hard coded black bars', having some or all of those options on or off doesn't appear to cause the bug. Just 'automatically detect hard coded black bars' being check with no options selected.
