true, in MADVR it very easy, just not so easy setting customs on the card itself with all the losses with various driver versions after rebooting, very annoying. I never had to do that though with my 1050, I could just set it in MADVR and I got 1-2 hours, maybe one drop per movie which is very good. I only gave up the 1060 and my 1050 as 3D was a total sh!t show.

If your not a gamer and dont need vast amounts of shader processing power in MADVR there is zero reason at all to get an NVIDIA card and quite a few reasons not to :)

Strange thing I have found is the TV plays a big part, something I was not aware of, I can create one in the NCP no problem since I got a Phillips 4K TV.

https://imgur.com/a/Sugg1Tu

Found this as well when setting up with my Sony HW40ES projector. Some displays are more flexible than others.

Madshi says so in his tutorial page :

Unfortunately there's a catch to this whole concept: While finetuning the pixel clock is something that virtually any display will accept without hesitation, using different "back porches" is a gray area. Some displays will accept slighly modified back porches, others might not. In my experience there's a good chance it will work for most displays, but there's no guarantee. It's also somewhat of a "trial and error" approach, because it's hard to predict which combinations of back porches the display might like or dislike. So it's quite possible that you'll try some modes which don't work (the display will likely simply go black or report a non-supported mode).

never heard of anyone getting 6-8 hours on an NVIDIA card, thats impressive, unheard of even, you wont get that with 3D though mate.

Was never a fan of 3D, hence my choice of display. Big fan of projectors however, but, we moved recently.....now, if only I can convince the wife to move again to a place with a basement.....

I get similar drop/repeat times with a resolution tuned by madVR too, hardly unheard of.

But I have never tried turning 3D, none of my displays support 3D anymore anyway.

This is what I got from Cyberlink about the 3D... it's lost , so if we want to watch 3D we need to go back to 425.

Thank you for contacting CyberLink Technical Support.

We understand that you want to know how to watch 3D movies with PowerDVD 17. We are more than willing to assist you.

With reference to your query, please be advised that the GPU manufacturer NVIDIA has removed the 3D playback feature (NVIDIA 3D Vision) from their GPU products, effective on the new driver version 430.39.

It will revoke the 3D video/image playback function and compatibility completely on the GPU hardware, and disable CyberLink PowerDVD for playing 3D videos/images with 3D effects accordingly.

The software player (PowerDVD) cannot reversely operate the 3D video playback function via the GPU hardware because the 3D playback function has been removed directly on hardware/hardware driver level.

To continue using the 3D playback feature on user's NVIDIA GPU platform, please reinstall the GPU driver to previous version 425.31 or earlier versions from NVIDIA driver page.

Please feel free to contact us back for further clarification or assistance related to CyberLink Products. Use the link below to get back to us.

EDIT : I just though about an idea , with windows 1903 we could just make Windows Sandbox and just have the 425 driver. is the Windows Sandbox will be like Fresh windows ? Or the driver will be installed, cause then we just need to install 425 and PowerDVD ... hmmm it will be still work to do.

Hotripper, sorry about the description. The I5 is 6th generation and yes, the problem is that sttuters but sound is ok. Thanks

I dont know if this will work for you but it is the best solution to the stuttering I was experiencing. I believe there is an issue with the 2070 as I have no issues when I put the 970 back in.

Try to set LAV to DXVA2 copyback. Set exclusive mode to 1 screen presented in advanced. Assuming you have FSE enabled and Display matching on. I noticed the stuttering was also happening with EVR not just Madvr. So for EVR I use CUVID and it gives very smooth playback and almost indistinguishable to madvr picture with non-hdr content. However just because this works for me doesnt mean it will for you. Let me know how it goes.

Hi All.

Is anyone else but me getting banding in HDR (passthrough) in Nvidia driver 430.39? tested in both DX11 and DXVA FSE and non-FSE.

Should add, Full-Full-Full and tested in both 8bit and 12bit.
I haven't noticed any banding with the new driver, or any driver, really. That's with 8-bit, of course. Some content will have banding, regardless, and for that I use madVR's debanding on low/low. Pretty much a "set it and forget it". I use DX11/windowed FS.

BTW, what's the (430.39 quadro mod) mentioned in your sig?

Can anyone with a vizio tv help me out. I want to buy a vizio tv but I read that 480p and 720p upscaling are very bad with those tvs. I was wondering if I let madvr do the upscaling from 480p and 720p to 4k will it look good or will vizio bad internal scaler kick in and 480p and 720p will look bad no matter what madvr does. Can someone comment on their experience with vizio 480p and 720p upscaling.

Yeah, but really never seen banding so pronounced before as with this driver in HDR (tried both Geforce and Guadro variants - both the same on my rig).

anyways, I'm not adding to the debate of Geforce VS Quadro drivers...but, all I will say is Quadro are deigned for bit perfect color pallets.

Instructions on how to install included in the zip (no need to do anything other than follow the instructions, as it's a modded .inf)

if you send UHD then you avoid the scaler in the TV.
personal advise don't get a vizio.

Thanks. It's such a shame that vizio has never fix this issue with their tv's. They offer great bang for your buck.

just to make sure.
you can send any source resolution to the TV at UHD.

Hope it helps.

I'm on 1920x1080, thanks though. Anyone else on this resolution with an Nvidia card on newer drivers that have some settings I can try?
I'll keep trying the various options that madVR offers.

No luck unfortunately with both madVR and CRU. I noted some of the recommended settings madVR gave me (various back porch changes to the main 23Hz mode) which I used CRU to try a few of but I still get one frame repeat every 12 mins or so regardless of what I change. This custom 23hz mode is showing in the detailed settings window and I reboot afterwards so I expect that's all I need to do to get this working, but it doesn't appear to be changing anything. Anyone with some serious experience with CRU/Nvidia able to give a hand, maybe in private? Either I get this working or it's back to 385.28 and avoid Windows 1903 as a result.

I wish you hadn't mentioned anything about the 720 and sd on a vizio. I went in to test those and they don't look as pronounced as 1080 or 4k, but now I'm getting stuttering again on 4k after doing it. don't do this to me!!!!!

Is there anyone who took a blu-ray player named oppo203 cracked version 60? My question is which has better video quality between MadVR NGU sharp(high) exclusive mode and oppo203?
I'm gonna buy an oppo203 cracked version 60 if the oppo203 makes me see better video quality than MadVR NGU sharp(high) exclusive mode does.
Thanks in advance for your reply if you would like to reply to my question.

End of the day it's your judgment to make what you prefer the look of, from a technical standpoint no other video processing equipment AFAIA offers the same processing capabilities.

So that means it's better than oppo203 to use madvr in order to get better video quality? By the way, what does the AFAIA mean?

There isn't any DVD/Blu-ray player on the market that can compare with what madVR does, it's just a question of what you feel is good enough.

Hello everyone,

I currently have an i5 4670k and a 1080 ti.

I want to get the best possible image quality with MPC-HC + Madvr both for native 2160p videos and also for 1080p to 2160p upscale. I will watch them on a quite large 4k Samsung TV. Which CPU would You recommend for this purpose ?

Budget is not an issue, but I don't want to throw away my hard earned money either. Do I really need an i7 8700 ? Or can I get the same best results also with an i7 7700 ?

I have no experience with overclocking, so I prefer a non-K intel cpu.

Last but not the least, please let me know if my gpu 1080 ti is not enough for the same purpose.

Thanks in advance for the replies.

You honestly don't need to change anything to get the "best" image quality. A 1080Ti offers plenty of performance for your required task. To make the most of it you will need profiles, start with Asmodians Max Quality settings profile found at the bottom of this post here (https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1709814#post1709814) and edit to suit the slightly lower performance of the 1080Ti.

Don't buy anything.

Your i5 is fine and CPU is (mostly) irrelevant for HTPC-related video decoding/processing as most of the work is done by the GPU. I use a cheap i3 6100k in my HTPC (which is 1/3 less powerful than your current CPU) with a GTX 1070 and everything runs smoothly.

Your current setup is more than enough to achieve great PQ.

Hey guys, I'm running into an issue attempting to output 10-bit from MadVR, despite having native display bitdepth set to 10-bit or higher. As you can see in the screenshot below, I have my nvidia driver set to 12-bit as well. I'm aware that setting everything to 8-bit w/ dithering might be the optimal choice, but I decided to do some experimenting. Is there some way I can determine why MadVR is outputting at 8-bit, and not 10-bit as I have it set? Thanks!

@ TechnoPeasant test FSE fullscreen exclusive mode .

How did you set the LAV filter?

Have you tried rebooting Windows ?

I know it seems stupid but i run into this issue quite often (madvr unable to switch to "D3D11 exclusive (10 bits)" and sticking to "D3D11 fullscreen windowed (8 bits)") even with FSE enabled, and a reboot always fixes it...

Hijacking the topic to ask...

What's your OS? Win8 only supports FSE, FSW only available in Win10.

Fullscreen windowed is not working for me in Windows10 latest update.

ONLY fullscreen exclusive gives me HDR logo on my LGOLED TV.

What version is your "latest update"? What driver version and what GPU are you using? To get HDR logo in OSD of your TV, you are using passthrough.

Hi all

Finally open for myself a possibility to watch 4K by downscale the image to 1080p (i have 1080p tv).

But i faced with troubles that my CPU (i5-4670) is loaded full on 99% and that's whu sometome it could be lagging on video.

So i tried to make that MADvr more use of my graphic card GPU (770 gtx 2 gb).

I'm using MADvr with MPC-BE player. 1080 always running well but with 4k i faced with lagging first time. Maybe chroma upscaling and image downscale must be choosed diferently for MADvr ?

I tried chroma: NGU anti alias high quality
image downscale: cubic bcubic150

And found it made the best perfomance, but after an hour of watching film i see some lagging anyway. Can someone please advice a solution to make MADvr to use more GPU instead of CPU?

Want to watch 4k on my 1080 now =)

your GPU doesn't have a HEVC decoder so you can't even decode the video when the bit rate is to high.

Why would that be ?

Heh, so, rebooting worked for some reason. However, I did find out that when madVR is running, if I open the Nvidia control panel and change the bit depth, that's when madVR gets confused and changes to 8-bit. That said, I rebooted again and changed to 23Hz, changed to 12-bit, and applied. Left it at 23hz, started the vid and all was well, 10-bit.

I'm using the "last known good driver" from the 3xx series, and the settings between refresh rates aren't sticking. 🤷🏻*♂️

So the solution is only to buy a new graphic card?

Maybe there are some workarounds?

Hotripper and others, thanks for the input. Yesterday I rolled back the latest nvidia driver to the onre before and seems like this was the problem, now I can run anything without issues at all ... I have to stop to "upgrade to latest" when everything works.

Update your card. You can't typically expect to deal with modern workloads with old hardware. I'd recommend a 1060 or above.

Maybe there are some workarounds?

Sure. Stop playing HEVC 4K video.

It works almost perfect! I just said maybe someone knows best settings in MADvr for that.

The problem is not madVRs workload on the GPU. It's the decoding process of the HEVC video that your CPU must decode (in software) because you don't have modern hardware. Update your GPU and you can fix this simply.

10 series is great upgrade provided you get a 1060 or above to replace your 770.

never heard of anyone getting 6-8 hours on an NVIDIA card, thats impressive, unheard of even, you wont get that with 3D though mate.???
I get no drops/repeats in both 23.976Hz and 50Hz. On a GTX 660.

I got there following the procedure I outlined here: https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=173571

The current tool available in madVR makes it easier to get the right numbers to input in CRU (in case madVR doesn't manage to do it itself).

Edit: should have read further, others pointed out this. Sorry.

The 4670 cpu i5 he has SHOULD be able to push through 4K on software decode.

My 5ghz 2500k on cpu decode uses only ~70-90% when running 4K full-bitstream Iso.

@ Koltos

Put pc into high performance mode, Lock cpu to highest clock. Turn your CPU fan to high, to ensure it's not Thermal or AVX throttling.

Check your motherboard for power-gating settings, and turn that stuff off, Things like, overcurrent protection, cpu spread spectrum, power saving, etc

Use the 64bit of mpc HC + madvr

Don't use mpcbe,

Put downscaling and chroma both to bilinear for now just for testing.

If this plays smoothly you can increase gpu settings after.

Also, if possible, Windows 7 is lighter, don't apply those meltdown/spectre fixes, they slow down cpu performance noticeably.

In this case because he's not running a new 4K TV, I would say squeaking by is Worth a shot.

When he does go the distance later, new tv, 300nits and above, an upgrade GPU is definitely recommended.

1070 is the bare minimum , prolly 1080ti is the go to, because we're pretty tired of dealing with 20xx and drivers.

Heck if his tv is VA-panel, 1080p and 300nits now, maybe a new gpu is worth it.

But if it's 1080p IPS, then meh.. squeak mode

madVR is using the GPU.

why do you want to push the CPU?
madVR is using the GPU.I know, I was just kind of taken back by how much a 4k TV pushes the GPU. If I could just offload a little onto the CPU then it would feel more even with maybe even a little more pushing in madVR. Also, I'm getting stutters again. I don't know what's going on. It's under load. I'm not pushing it to full max, but I'm still back to stutters again. I was thinking of maybe trying CRU, but I don't know.

Edit: I will say this about vizio, I just got a new vizio 43" 4k tv because it got the best reviews for movie watching across multiple sights, but this panel has the same problem as my last vizio in that there is something wrong with magenta. No matter what I do is too saturated when watching regular OTA TV. It looks like they have a disease. This is using an I1 Display Pro to calibrate. I got this exact same error with a 40" panel and I don't know how to fix it.

Thanks for hearing me. I also think that my CPU must handle with this 4k downscale.

But i tried different settings, billinear too and in some moments is 98% of using my CPU.

Advices about perfomance mode and cpu highest clock i haven't tried yet. Maybe it will help.

My win is 7.

And one note: Firstly my 4K video shuttering and lagging from the start, but when i put check in MADvr 'use chroma upscale separately if it saves perfomance' - video starting smooth. But after an hour or less some lags would happen anyway,

Would it ever be possible for madvr to do "black frame insertion"?
Many projectors years ago had this function but it was removed due to projectors not having the lumens required. Todays projectors since 3D have lots of lumens and I would love to see it return, but frame interpolation seems to be the order of the day. If madvr was capable of BFI it would be a fantastic feature for smooth playback without any judder.
