I am not able to get HDR output to work either in Win 10 Creators update using my GTX 1060. I even tried reverting to the pre-Creator's update driver (378.92) as the Creators Update supporting driver broke HDR output in games for some people, but this also didn't work.

Things I've tried in all possible combinations:

Setting color output settings to 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 10 and 12 bit in Nvidia driver settings.

Setting color output settings to system managed in Nvidia drivers (new option for Creator's update drivers).

Manually triggering HDR mode in Windows display settings before playing video.

Both Nvidia and Win 10 HDR metadata transmission methods in madVR.

In the cases where HDR was not manually turned on, madVR output was identical in windowed and FSE modes (and both were wrong, looking washed out with the overall picture too bright, the highlights dulled and with the color saturation low). In the cases where HDR was manually turned on, the windowed output was still wrong and the FSE output looked the same as the output when HDR was turned off.

As of now, the only "correct" (as in close to the output of my TV's internal media player and madVR in process HDR to SDR mode) HDR output I've seen is by setting the Nvidia drivers to system managed color, turning on HDR manually, and playing the files in the Windows 10 Movies and TV app. This combination of settings is also the only time I've seen my receiver report that it is being sent the BT.2020 color space.

Interestingly, the output from the Movies and TV app when HDR is turned off is the inverse of madVR's ouput with the overall picture dark with the highlights blown out and with the colors super-saturated.

To get madVR to passthrough HDR data successfully on Windows 10 1703 I did the following:

Update to madVR 0.91.9, LAV filters to 0.69.0.43, NVIDIA drivers to 381.89

Picture quality looks exactly the same as when using the TV's internal player.
Also, both NVIDIA's private API and Windows 10 API produced the same results but I only tested with one video file.
I used DDU to do a clean install of the display drivers.
Windows 10 1703 was a clean install not an update from 1607.

Can madVR take advantage of high refresh rate panels like 72Hz, 120Hz, 144Hz, 240Hz, et cetera? Would I be able to get smoother motion with a 240Hz panel with 24/30 Hz mixed content (Anime) without enabling the Smooth Motion setting?

Is there a point or any benefit in using high refresh rate monitiors/panels with purely madVR?

On another note, do high refresh rate panels help with the viewing experience of 24/30 sources like Hollywood films?

Enabling Smooth Motion is exactly what you'd want to do with a high refresh rate panel, either that or running as close to the frame rate as possible which you can already do with lower rate panels.
Yes the benefit is smoother pans at the expense of a small amount of image sharpness, but perhaps Smooth Motion at 100+Hz is almost as good sharpness wise, perhaps someone can weigh in here.

the potential problem with smooth motion is "totally" gone on a screen with 120 Hz+ and that's about it.

they are usually very very bad screen with terrible CR, 6 bit TN panels and terrible colors. these are gaming screens nothing else.

if you want proper image quality get something else.

Just to be 1000% sure: 8bit works fine with AMD? I just ordered my 580 and will go nuclear if madvr doesn't work properly :P

have fun with your core meltdown because NGU is going to be very slow with polaris.

i never had any problem with AMD DXVA copyback. not with my 6770, r9 270 and even my RX 480 worked properly with DXVA copyback.

I'm upgrading from HD7850 and it indeed works very well, although a bit too slow for high NNEDI or Very High NGU. If 580 can run NGU high I think I'll survive.

i'm not 100% sure but a 7850 has about the same NGU performance as a polaris card.

if i'm not mistaken my R9 270 was faster than my RX 480 in NGU and only there.

but NGU high is pretty easy for GPUs so maybe...

The problem(black screen) is the combination of RX4x0,Madvr,dxva2(native) and 10 bit HEVC.With this combination and evr cp everything's fine,so it seems that the problem points Madvr.With 8bit you'll be fine.RX580 is a rebrand with higher core clocks,so I guess you will have it too.
If you have dxva2(copy-back) why bother with dxva2(native) though(?)I am the unlucky one like pruttolle that experiences stutters with copyback,others with same gpu don't.

Huhn is right about polaris being slow.
In some occasions(in others I have some dropped frames) I can run NGU(sharp) high with my RX470.I guess you will be able to run NGU high with an RX580.

Ran NGU sharp for the first time on some a 720 movie and was quite impressed with how it looked. Couldn't run Very High on my 960 but High was a go with about 20ms render time.

Sounds like someone needs to have a word with an AMD dev and get them to optimize a bit for madVR if it's that bad, I don't see a good reason to choose them over Nvidia when it comes to using it (Once you've optimized the 24Hz mode that is) I believe AMD still has the better timings here.

I have RX 470 and madVR works great. Im scaling to 1080p. In most scenarios except for high FPS content i can run NGU Sharp (very high) <SSim2D100 without dropping frames and even have some headroom left. For me NGU Sharp (very high) = NNEDI3 128 performance wise. NGU Sharp (high) is around 15% faster than NNEDI3 64. If i remember correctly i only could do 64 neurons NNEDI3 in same situations with my 7870 on the most madVR optimized driver 13.12.

I ran a few quick tests using the latest build, here is what I see (note I have an HD Integral, so I can monitor the HDMI stream data as well as via the TV Info).

If the monitor is set to HDR (windows slider setting), then both modes (Nvidia or DX11) display HDR, but then everything is displayed using HDR, so not sure if they are doing anything. If HDR is disabled, then everything plays back a non-HDR no matter the option (Nvidia or DX11).
If you set a custom color mode using Nvidia (which makes sense as I can match the TV's calibration), then HDR can not be enabled in Windows (via the slider) and both options (Nvidia and DX11), do not display HDR.


What I'd like is to be able to turn on HDR, but only have HDR data sent if the Video is HDR otherwise to not send it, but I do not see how to do that in Windows currently, so with HDR on it is right for 1% and wrong for 99% which is not. I've set it for the 99% (HDR slider off, Nvidia set to 4:4:4 limited) since so little has content includes HDR.

I'm running a 7700K with a GTX 1080 TI, latest Nvidia Drivers.

Is there something I'm missing with the settings?, or is it just that Windows HDR is half baked (I'm thinking it is the second one).

I've been using Kodi DSPlayer 16.1 with MadVR (currently v0.91.7) for a long time with no problems. Recently I've started experiencing video/audio stutters about two or three times per hour of playback. The best way I can describe it is like a skipping vinyl record, and the audio stutter makes a machine-gun like effect. It's very brief, lasting 1-2 seconds each time, but really jarring, and often the video/audio are out of sync afterwards and I have to stop playback and restart.

The MadVR playback stats don't recognize these stutters as frame repeats or presentation glitches - it seems like as far as MadVR is concerned, playback is working fine, which makes me wonder if something else in my system is causing the problem.

This problem started spontaneously several months ago - I didn't make any changes to my system or upgrade any of the software.

Also, I'm running Windows 10.

you need an HDR screen with HDR 10 support, a GPU that supports HDR and if you are using an AVR in between it has to support it too.

You need a monitor that reports an EDID that supports HDR as well, confirmed that using the HD Integral to change the EDID of the TV.

I am hesitant to try out for myself since I don't want any updates to start causing any issues (I'm on an earlier build). I'm a JVC owner and want to be sure that it's safe to update before I do. I need to strip the HDR metadata in order to get the max out of the projector, and this was a (for me) welcome side-effect of the HDR implementation before.

I am curious to know why your don't want the metadata on your JVC projector?

I also got a JVC(RS-420) and I feel like I do want the metadata to be sent to the projector.

Hello,
I have created .3dlut in displayCal for my display (NEC PA302W), using i1 Display 2 calibrator.
And recently I noticed some bad artifacts in video when this 3dlut is used in madVR.
Here is a screenshot (the saturated color patches can be seen, especially in the left part of the image).

The video is ok when i disable calibration LUT.
It seems that something is wrong with calibration or its usage.
What can be done to fix this?

I'm attempting to play 3D @ 60fps to an LG OLED in PC mode using LAV, MPC-BE and MadVR in order to bypass as much processing in the LG as possible and have greater control. However this is proving more difficult than I imagined, not least of which is both MPC-BE and MadVR have settings for the 3D output format which may be conflicting. I wasn't sure which forum is most appropriate since I don't know which software component is most contributing to the issues. I'm using an i7 2600 and GTX 1050 with 4k60p RGB Full Range output.

As a preliminary question, I have come across comments that MadVR only works with MPC-BE x86 and not x64: is this still true, or doesn't it have an impact on speed anyway?

If I set 3D output in both MPC-BE and MadVR to line interleaved, I get a 1920x1080 window on the desktop that is 3D when I put on the passive glasses. Statistics say it is a 1920x1080 video, yet line interleaved should be generating a 1920x2160 window IMO, which means there is scaling happening before the window is output. Rendering is ~ 30ms with all scaling Bicubic75 and no other processing. When in fullscreen windowed mode, it seems to be correct 3D, but rendering increases to ~60ms and there are many dropped frames.

There is obviously unwanted scaling (ie I don't need a 3D window on the desktop if it reduces processing load) happening in windowed mode, but I'm not sure if it is also happening in a similar way for fullscreen windowed mode: that is, maybe the 1920x2160 decoded 3D interleaved frame is being scaled to 1920x1080 for display in the window, then being scaled back up to 3840x2160 for display in fullscreen windowed, losing detail in the process. Or have I got this wrong and the window is correctly processing the decoded frame separately for each situation? There should not be a huge scaling overhead in scaling a 1920x2160 interleaved frame to 3840x2160.

I'm also confused over having 3D output format settings in both MPC-BE and MadVR: what should I set each one to in order to get unmolested line interleaved 3D with the least processing overhead?

If anyone else has experience in doing the above for the best PQ and least processing load, I would appreciate some tips.

did you hanged the nvidia power setting? if not change them to adaptive.

64 bit is faster for software decoding and madVR works totally fine with 64 bit. ignore the 3D settings in mpc be for now or use mpc hc until 3D works as it should be.

my guess is that these mpc-be settings are for EVR and or the subtitle filter.

leave madVR at interleaved 3D for now
after you did all this make a screen of the OSD.

60 FPS scaling isn't easy for a 1050 so the load will be quite notable.

Actually, 1080p->4k @ 60fps with Bicubic scaling and smoothmotion has a render load of about 7ms on the GTX 1050. 3D seems to be a different matter, at least with my current configuration, although theoretically it should be less because 1920x2160->4k only needs scaling horizontally.

First thing I'd do is try using another player then rolling back drivers. A system restore point set before these issues occurred could be worth a shot.

Thanks. Do you mean rolling back graphics drivers? I'm on Intel HD 4400 graphics through my CPU, and I haven't been aware of a driver update in a very long time, unless it could have been an automatic update in the background. I'll check.

Trying a different player is a great idea. I'll try MPC-HC with MadVR, same settings, and see if I experience the same issue.

I've been having this issue for at least 6 months (been lazy about trying to solve it), so I'm not sure what system restore points are available but I can check. That would leave all my personal files in place but roll back the OS, drivers, installed programs, etc, correct?

Easier said than done: photo is the best I could do, with playback on pause.

Render times are around 18ms with MPC-BE x64 Bicubic75 for all scaling
Render times are around 45ms with MPC-BE x64 Bicubic75 for all scaling plus smoothmotion enabled.

I'm not certain, but the image looks a bit softer than I would expect, so I wonder if the process is throwing away lines and then scaling back up again for presentation because it does mention the image is 1920x1080 and it does present in a 1920x1080 window. However, it does sort of work.

I have to stop the LG OLED from orbiting the screen, otherwise the eye views swap after a time period. Also, because I'm driving the desktop effectively as 2D, the LG doesn't detect 3D and automatically switch into 3D mode with extra OLED Light, so I have to manually use a different preset to watch 3D. Apart from this, it works well because I can watch 3D and 2D just by putting 3D glasses on or removing them and the desktop doesn't change hugely.

When a JVC projector receives HDR metadata it gets locked into HDR mode. This doesn't actually do anything other than turning off the dynamic iris and defaulting to a JVC predefined HDR-gammacurve. The major selling point for a JVC is the black levels, hence we want the dynamic iris. Also, custom gamma curves give better results than JVC's own solution so it's nice to have a user mode properly setup for HDR that doesn't default to a worse JVC curve.

The current go-to solution to get the best result with UHD material is to buy an HDFury Linker for 200$ in order to strip the hdr metadata before the JVC receives it. With Madvr, we are basically getting this functionality without having to buy a separate device.

I am not sure that I understand your question. The Linker is needed in order for a UHD player to send HDR (tells the player that "yes this display is HDR capable", so the EDID to the player needs to say "HDR capable" etc.) but from the projector's point of view it doesn't get the HDR flag. Unfortunately there is no other way to accomplish this atm. One would hope JVC could allow the user to set up HDR in a custom mode with functioning dynamic iris. But this is sadly not possible.

I'm currently using Nvidia drivers 376.53, with MadVR v91.9 with a GTX750Ti outputting @ 1080p.
I'm about to upgrade to a GTX1060, so I was wondering which Nvidia drivers people are using.
Also, has anybody got any suggested MadVR settings for the GTX1060(3GB), that I can use as a baseline to start from?

People have been reporting issues following Windows 10's Creators Update, but nothing affecting a specific Nvidia driver. So probably just get the latest one. Just make sure the power management mode in the 3D settings is set to Adaptive (either globally or as a profile for your media player of choice).

I don't think it is actually possible to use FullScreen exclusive mode after Creator's Update. Before the update, if you were moving your mouse when MPC-HC/madVR were in FSE, it would drop out of FSE (into non-exclusive borderless fullscreen mode) you would see this obvious "hard-refresh" for half a second on your display, then, when you would stop using your mouse and leave PC idle for 3-5 seconds, the same "hard-refresh" would happen and MPC-HC/madVR would be in FSE again. Well, the "hard-refresh" does not exist in Windows 10 after Creator's Update - I think due to its overlay thing, it does not allow anything to run in FSE mode... I know disabling Fullscreen optimization on MPC-HC.exe and madTPG.exe does nothing. I hope disabling Game Mode and restarting PC will fix it...

Microsoft just made the switch to exclusive mode more seamless if the display mode remains the same (ie. no refresh or resolutiuon change), but you still run in exclusive mode.
There is definitely still a brief flicker when it enters FSE, although much less pronounced and by default doesn't trap the mouse anymore.

The most relevant setting to turn off to prevent windows from interfering with fullscreen mode is "Show Game bar when I play full screen games" in the settings app.

On another note, "Game mode" is entirely unrelated to any of the graphics things. If anything, disable "Game bar" only, it is what controls the overlay, not Game mode.

Unfortunaly 3D output requires D3D11, and for some users, using D3D11 with Intel GPUs results in this "jumping". I've not yet found a way to fix it, probably because I can't reproduce it on my old HD4000 GPU. I have a new Kaby Lake PC sitting around here, maybe I'll be able to reproduce it with that, then maybe there's hope to fix this, but I can't say for sure right now. FWIW, this problem does seem to be limited to Intel GPUs.


meanwhile I had to realize, that also in 2D a similar phenomenon occurs, if Subtitles are displayed (I use the xysubfilter). Until the first Sub comes everything is alright, but once a Sub is displayed, the juddering starts.
In some Videos even pause/Play can provoke this;

Not always, but in some cases this can be stopped (in 2D at least) if one moves the mouse cursor down, so that the progressbar is displayed;

You cannot enable Game Mode for specific games without the Game Bar. Game Mode set to ON simply means "Allow the use of Game Mode" without enforcing it, but you have to use the Game Bar to actually select and activate Game Mode for whichever game. Launch any supported game, press Win + G to make Game Bar show up and there will be a "Enable Game Mode for This Game" box that you tick. That is what Microsoft says here - http://support.xbox.com/en-US/games/game-setup/use-game-mode-gaming-on-pc , although it says Game Mode may be activated for some games (the box already ticked), I never had that happen with my games.

What is weird is I think too few people are looking into the issue of Creator's Update causing dropped frames and glitches in madVR, even when Game Mode, Game Bar, and FullScreen Optimizations are disabled. I still can't use 23.970Hz without having severe frame drops and glitches, but I am fine at 24.000Hz. That only makes me lucky that 24.000Hz works, but for many others it does not.

You cannot enable Game Mode for specific games without the Game Bar.

So figure out what you want. Disable the Game bar or accept that it can interfer with any D3D application. Game mode is largely fluff anyway, so if you care about video playback then just disable the game bar. Or turn game mode on for the games you play and then disable the bar.

As I have CLEARLY stated - disabling any or all of the items related to Xbox Overlay, Game Bar, Game Dvr, Game Mode, FullScreen Optimizations has absolutely 0 effect on playback behavior that began to occur after Creator's Update.

Movies & TV app now refuses to play hevc 10-bit clips.

It's not just Monarch. I, too, am having some issues. My problems arise when seeking further in anime. Audio plays but the image freezes. This only occurs while in full screen (I don't use FSE). More info available on request, but I don't think I have anything new to contribute other than confirming that Creator's Update messed with my clean MadVR installation.

Same here - the Creator Update had no noticeable impact whatsoever on madVR operation on my system. Whatever these issues are, they are definitely not universal.

Might just unblock updates and give creator's a shot on my system, can always revert. Was going to hold off a few months but since it's not a given I'll have problems I might as well try it.

Easier said than done: photo is the best I could do, with playback on pause.

Render times are around 18ms with MPC-BE x64 Bicubic75 for all scaling
Render times are around 45ms with MPC-BE x64 Bicubic75 for all scaling plus smoothmotion enabled.

I'm not certain, but the image looks a bit softer than I would expect, so I wonder if the process is throwing away lines and then scaling back up again for presentation because it does mention the image is 1920x1080 and it does present in a 1920x1080 window. However, it does sort of work.

I have to stop the LG OLED from orbiting the screen, otherwise the eye views swap after a time period. Also, because I'm driving the desktop effectively as 2D, the LG doesn't detect 3D and automatically switch into 3D mode with extra OLED Light, so I have to manually use a different preset to watch 3D. Apart from this, it works well because I can watch 3D and 2D just by putting 3D glasses on or removing them and the desktop doesn't change hugely.

The Creators update definitely did some weird stuff on my laptop. It took a while for my GTX 1060 to even be supported by the new GeForce drivers (some sort of incompatibility with ASUS systems apparently), and now whenever I close the lid on my laptop the madVR image freezes. Resizing the window gets it moving again but it's a slideshow - I have to reopen MPC-HC to fix the problem. I don't have Game Mode or the Game Bar turned on so it isn't that, but I haven't tried going back to the pre-Creators Update drivers yet (378.92).

Edit: The problem also isn't consistently reproducible, unfortunately, so doing any tests is difficult.

Edit2: Hmm, I wonder if the latest cumulative update (https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/4016240) may have helped with that: "Addressed issue where running Win32 Direct3D applications or games in full-screen exclusive mode causes the system to become unresponsive when resuming from Connected Standby." Not quite what I was talking about, but maybe related anyway.

With more experimentation, I can get an OU 3D presentation that looks significantly sharper than line interleaved and an SBS 3D presentation that is between the two for sharpness with rendering times of around 20ms.

I can understand the SBS being less sharp because the individual 1920x1080 eye views must be scaled to 1920x2160 and stacked SBS for fullscreen presentation by the GPU, then in the LG they are unstacked and each scaled to 3840x1080 before being interleaved. This means 1080->2160, then 2160->1080 scaling which is redundant, whereas OU only requires a single scale of 1920->3840.

I suspect there is a bug in the line interleaved process where scaling is happening when it shouldn't: whether that is in the decoder, player or renderer I'm not sure.

without on image i can't tell you. the approval of attachment can take a while easily days and more.

but i can tell you that you will run out of Vram when scaling to UHD. 2Gb is not save for UHD usages.

FSE mode just creates a huge number of dropped frames for me, as well as the odd stutter during play back. With it turned off my videos play without a hitch. It's a really buggy feature all round IMO, best left untouched.

On another note, I now get random occassions when I open a video in PotPlayer, and it's a black screen, but the audio plays. Close, reopen, close, reopon, then the video plays (sometimes). With MadVR turned off it I don't get the same issue.

I can't pin point why it's doing it. Have uninstalled MadVR, PotPlayer and all the LavFilters, reinstalled PotPlayer and MadVR at its basic and it still happens.

I've got a feeling its this new Creators update from Windows 10. It's a seriously crap update, the start button has got all kind of bugs on it too. Maybe it's messed with my graphics drivers?

They definitely did something to their graphics system because even new NVidia drivers now have the "Default Settings" (as in Windows 10 CU Defaults) and "NVidia Settings".

I get no stutters or micro-sttuters or out-of-sync video. What I do get are dropped frames + presentation glitches when playing 23.976p content using 23.970Hz refresh rate, something that never happened before. ReClock reports that everything is in sync, but madVR says there are dropped frames and glitches.

Luckily FOR ME, using 24.000Hz refresh rate (that my TV also supports) allows for issue-free playback of 23.976p content - no dropped frames or presentation glitches. The same goes for my 120Hz monitor - no dropped frames or presentation glitches when 120Hz is used. I have not checked if 59/60Hz has an issue yet.

Nobody knows what exactly causes Creator's Update issues like mine and yours and how to fix it. It probobly IS their new Game Mode / Optimization / FS Optimizations / Xbox Overlay system, but disabling and forcibly removing it did not resolve the issue.

I mean it could be that ReClock is incorrect and madVR is correct when displaying statistics data/info. I could be that madVR shows dropped frames, in reality there aren't any and its all smooth because I stated, I have no experience any jerkiness or weird motion when there is a dropped frame every 3 seconds... I don't know, but I do wish madshi would figure this out for the sake of madVR working on the latest OS with the latest update and those who are having similar problems. I was just lucky to "fix" mine if you could call it a "fix"...

On the other hand I did notice slight improvement in game FPS (benchmark-tested) and reduced driver latencies (LatencyMon) after the update.
