After you have installed it make sure you do not delete the directoy where you ran the bat file as this becomes the installed directory. I have heard of people deleting the directory after thinking the install bat moves filles somewhere else.

I just installed it last night and had the same problem. I needed to run as Administrator for install and it worked correctly.

how do I have to setup coreavc to work best with madvr? so far Ive limited the output format to YV12 and set deinterlacing to none (weave). since I still use both, coreavc for decoding of the video and ffdshow for sharpening, in case of deinterlacing, which codec should be used then? should I use coreavc (bob, hardware?)? or rather ffdshow (yadif)? and if coreavc, is it recommended to tick agressive deinterlacing?

whats left now are the settings input levels, output levels and input colourspace. so far all three are set to autodetect. I use those four 3dlut files for HD/SD PC and video levels, do I need to change anything here?

In CoreAVC, set both input and output to TV since you are outputting with YV12.

In CoreAVC, set both input and output to TV since you are outputting with YV12.

Why?.....

namaiki
26th August 2010, 17:35
Because CoreAVC shouldn't be touching levels conversion. Also, it doesn't matter what you set for colourspace as madVR will be handling that too.

Thunderbolt8
26th August 2010, 17:58
but why then TV and not PC, since coreavc shouldnt be touching it anyway?

namaiki
26th August 2010, 18:01
AFAIK, it doesn't matter if you pick both PC or both TV in CoreAVC, you will get the same image.

Thunderbolt8
26th August 2010, 18:04
so both autodetect should work as well?

namaiki
26th August 2010, 18:12
No, because autodetect can equal either TV or PC, so you will not know if it is TV|TV, TV|PC, PC|PC or PC|TV.

2 useful tricks in mVR I use are to:
-use 2 different LUT's(SPMTE-C/EBU) and switch them on the fly by changing the levels...hence loading different LUT's
-set the .ini read only, input 0-255 and enable the TV>PC conversion on top when the picture's too bright(sloppy encodes).

No, because autodetect can equal either TV or PC, so you will not know if it is TV|TV, TV|PC, PC|PC or PC|TV.
should I tick a specific colourspace then as well? or is auto here ok?

Thanks everyone, I got it to work finally. Pretty sure the "install into a different directory" trick is what fixed it... though i'm still not sure WHY that would fix it. Funky registry settings hanging around?

It doesn't matter about colourspace as madVR will be converting to RGB, so the option in CoreAVC shouldn't actually do anything.

I always get the black screen first time I try with 027. It seems to only happen once and hangs the player, I need task manager to end process, then every time after that its fine until I reboot the machine then it will happen again. This situation is very simular to what happened originally with many nvidia card owners with madVR not working at all due to some slow scan line reporting issue I think madshi said it was.

I also get the random dropped frames with 027 what were not happening at all before and have gone back to previous version.

Yes freeze mpc-hc , happens with 0.27, with my win7 x64, 32bit mpc-hc too. Got to close once with process monitor.
retry same video file, works.

Some more info on the black screen issue I have.

I watched a video yesturday and had the OSD stats of madVR active when I closed the media player.

Today after PC restart I watched a video and I did not suffer the black screen as I always do with 027 the first time a video is launched after pc reboot. The video started fine and the OSD stats were showing. Now here is the kicker, I turned off the stats and then went to watch another video and guess what, I got the black screen problem. I had to use task manager to close player and launch video file again to get it working.

It seems having the OSD stats active stop the black screen issue somehow.

This night I watched a few episodes of a TV show and I experienced the same "black screen" problem that Razoola is talking about.
The bad thing is that in my case it's not only the first time after PC restart but 2 out of 4 episodes hang the player
:(
I'm not 100% sure what's the cause because for the last week I was very busy and I haven't used v0.27 a lot and when I used it I usually had the OSD on. The other possibility is that the video card driver change I did last night (from 10.4 to 10.7a) could have caused it ... I'm not exactly sure of anything and I'll do more tests tomorrow but just wanted to share my experience from this night.

The black screen issue with MPC happens regularly now everytime I have the first launch of MPC after a switch on or reboot. Kill MPC and afterwards it seems to work fine. This happens with Catalyst 10.7 and 10.8 (win 64 home).

I guess for me the question is whats missing at the first load of MPC and whats left after MPC is killed such that the next load of MPC is fine.

It happens when I open mpc-hc first time & check 3dlut option. I think the problem is the pop-up message "Your computer doesnt have 3dlut, do u want to install it ? " (or something like that) didnt get a chance to appear on top of mpc-hc

Bah! I can't get madVR to be recognized by MPC-HC either. I've tried running the install batch file with administrator rights and with UAC disabled. I've tried multiple installation directories, including the one for MPC-HC itself. It's definitely registered in the registry and the filter is available in GraphEdit. Oh well...

Did you try something like C:\Users\<User Name>\madVR ?

Biggiesized, have you tried uninstalling and re-installing, making sure not to move the folder where you unzipped all the files after running install.bat? Also make sure to use MPC-HC 32-bit, though your Windows can be 64-bit. Check the external filters list in MPC-HC to see if madVR is showing up there.

Will there be a x64 version of madVR?

namaiki
30th August 2010, 07:11
Not for a while, if ever. Anything you want to do can be accomplished with a 32-bit media player on a x64 version of Windows anyways.

Madshi, when I switch between exclusive mode and windowed mode and then back to exclusive mode again when MPC loads the next file in the folder automatically after reaching the end of the currently playing file, MPC drops back to windowed mode for a second shows a previous frame then goes back to fullscreen. MPC will sometimes crash as it transitions to the next file which I haven't reproduced with other renderers. While producing the log I did have MPC hang at the end of playback, hopefully it can help you find the problems.

Whoops! I've been using MPC-HC x64 all along! I didn't know madVR and MPC-HC x64 were incompatible.

Same issue here with .27...first time I run it after a reboot I get a blank screen and it freezes up. I have to use task manager to close it. I'm usuing MPC-HC.

Thanks,

Here is the madVR log about 12 second playback from beginning. Hope this can give you some clues.
I attached the 2 log files so you could have a look.
Thanks guys, your logs were helpful, it was the same issue for both of you. Should be fixed in the next build.

When you pause during playback, minimize the player window and bring it back to front, why do frames get dropped as reported by the OSD?
I don't really know, but it's not important, or is it? I mean, playback goes back to smooth quickly, or does it not?

Log file of me playing the non-mod16 sample I posted earlier (http://www.multiupload.com/75QNFST5AN):
http://www.multiupload.com/C8MP19K1B5

Start playback, go to fullscreen, go back to normal (with shifted chroma), stop playback, close player.
Looking at the log, there are some weird things going on. Shortly after switching back to windowed mode playback is stopped and the connection to madVR is broken and reestablished. Not sure why MPC HC or the decoder is doing that. Furthermore the decoder behaves differently after the reconnection than it did before. But I can't see anything wrong in the way madVR behaves.

madVR 0.27

2 frame drop every approx 27 seconds, almost no frame delays. Noticible jerkyness during each 2 frame drops. This is in all fullscreen modes.

madVR 0.26

1 frame drop every approx 27 seconds, about 1/3 of the time accompanied by 1 frame delay
Thanks, that's helpful!

OK some more info, I get the same frame drops every 27 seconds with evr-cp. Its graph however shows red and green lines moving away from each other very slowly, and each 27 seconds, the graph jerks, a frame drops and both green and red lines in the graph come back together.

With evr-cp + reclock in the chain and with reclocks vsync enabled, and evr-cp's vsync disabled, the green and red lines in evr-cp flatten out and the dropped frames stop. I get 0 dropped frames over a 10 min period at least.

With madVR 0.27 + reclock in the chain and with reclocks vsync enabled I still get the frame drops.

To me it looks like reclock is detecting my video hardwares refresh rate slightly differently to madVR and evr-cp. Reclock detects "Video hardware" as "Refresh 24.000 Hz (DDR) vs "display 23.96190" in madVR. I really don't know. Can it be a video driver problem rather than madVR / evr-cp? I can't imagine both detecting the refresh rate incorrectly.

UPDATE 2:
I have removed my 3 custom resolutions, and recreated them in the nvidia control panel. Now madVR, evr-cp and reclock all detect my screen as 23.962hz, absoluty 0 frame drops. So I'm not sure if this is an issue that can be "fixed" on your end. The only thing issue I see is the difference between how reclock and madVR detected the rate of the screen before I did this recreation of the custom resolutions. Reclock was able to stop my frame drops (with evr-cp) as it detected the screen (I assume correctly at that time), as 24.000hz...
I'm not sure why Reclock detected a different refresh rate than madVR. madVR's refresh rate detection is usually spot on. I would trust madVR's numbers in this case. Especially if they stop fluctuating after a while. That's usually a pretty good sign that they're correct. Of course it's also possible that if ReClock detects a wrong refresh rate, that it will make things worse in terms of frame drops. But I don't really know what was going on. Having such a big difference between the refresh rate detected by madVR and ReClock is weird...

From your logs it's very clear that the frame drops every 27 seconds were caused by a mismatch between source frame rate and display refresh rate. And it's very clear: If your display has less refreshes per second than the movie delivers, then frames have to be dropped in regular intervals - or else audio would go out of sync. And btw, this is almost a proof that ReClock's 24.000 was wrong: If the display refresh rate was really 24.000 and the movie only 23.976, then the display had more refreshes per second than the movie. Which means that neither EVR nor madVR would have had to drop any frames at all - instead some movie frames would have shown for 2 vsync intervals (practically a "frame repeat"). Having regular frame drops usually means that the display refresh rate is too *low*.

Of course, if you let ReClock resample to match video and audio clocks, then there don't have to be any frame drops, as long as ReClock does its work correctly. IMHO it's the better solution to create a custom resolution which exactly delivers as many refreshes as the source has. Then you can turn ReClock's resampling off and still get no frame drops at all.

What I can say is that a "scheduled" (intentional) madVR v0.27 frame drop was often followed by a few accidental frame drops. That didn't happen in v0.26, but then v0.26 sometimes delayed frames too often instead of dropping them. The next build should hopefully combine the best of v0.26 and v0.27.

Using mpchc latest build (or any previous one) and setting it to start directly on fullscreen mode, the audio starts but the screen remains black and finally crashes after a few secondes.
That "remains black" problem should be fixed in the next build.

Intermittently when opening interlaced video (1080i50) I get constant frame drops in 0.27. Have to close and re-open MPC-HC several times before playback is smooth.
Is that a new problem with v0.27? If so, please recheck with v0.28, when it's out. Might be solved there.

if we got only a few (mb. ~20) dropped and delayed frames while watching a movie atm and we could definately say that this is not due hardware performance issues, would it be possible in the future to have no such dropped or delayed frames at all? is this possible from a technical point of view?
Yes, it should easily be possible, if your hardware is fast enough. The key is to create a good custom resolution. That's a topic I might look into soon.

when watchig a blu-ray via hardware BD player, if we could measure dropped and delayed frames here, do those (or something comparable) actually never occur here? is playback via stand-alone BD player always flawless in that aspect?
I would guess that it depends on the model. When I visited a demo for a new projector last year, I definitely saw dropped frames from the hardware BD player they were using. But I guess a good BD player will probably be flawless in this aspect.

Having trouble with video levels.

I can change the output of the video card to GB full, RGB limited, 422 AND 444...
What should the setting be so I don't clip black and white and can pass BTB and WTW. Also, what setting in madVR?

I thought I've tried all combos, but still cannot seem to get it quite right.
Use a calibration disc to make sure that brightness and contrast are set correctly on your projector. You should set your ATI card to RGB Full and madVR probably to video levels. But your projector has a video/PC levels switch, too (different name, though, IIRC). So you'll have to play with the settings to check which give you the right results. Also it's possible that there's a bug in the ATI drivers. For some people RGB limited and RGB full produce the same result, which of course is a bug.

For some reason madvr does not go to automatic exclusive mode anymore even if no GUI is shown. I have attached the logfile. Can you see anything in there ?
You have to enable the ZP option "overlay covers entire video area".

is it the same for you that sometimes it looks like single frames then and when are not properly deinterlaced? I seem to get this every few seconds when playing 29.97 stuff. already tried force wave or bob, but not really a difference. seems to be better with ffdshow and the ffmpeg deinterlacer or yadif.
so using ffdshow's deinterlacing filters and dscaler together, is this ok? do I have to disable the inverse telecine mode of dscaler then?
You can forget the DScaler's internal deinterlacing (leave it as auto)

Activate FFDshow's deinterlacing, Yadif preferably, when watching 29.97fps content.
NO. There is a key difference between movie content and video content. For movie content you have to use inverse telecine to get best results. Yadif is a video mode deinterlacer. Use IVTC for movies and Yadif (or something else) for video content. Do NOT use IVTC for video content. Do NOT use Yadif for movie content.

Hmmmm... I'm not sure: Is your post about the crash, only? Or is the "drop back to windowed mode" your main report? What should I look for in the log? For the drop back to windowed mode or for the crash? There are so many changes between windowed and exclusive mode in the log that it's hard to keep track which is which...

Thanks a bunch for 0.28! :)

Minor annoyance: If tray icon is disabled and you click on "Edit Settings" via Play|Filters|madVR Renderer in MPC-HC, then the settings dialog won't open. You can see that the window is being drawn but it disappears in a split-second.

hm how is video and movie content defined then, by the source they come from or by framerate? so is a blu-ray movie always movie, but a d-theater movie with 29.97fps as well?
as said, deinterlacing with yadif that d-theater 29.97fps movie gave me a picture with no traces of interlacing when I used yadif, but there were noticable traces when I used the internal dscaler stuff.

small problem: when I clink on madVR settings and then monitor -> 3dlut, I always get an error message (madHcCtrl.exe, an error occured in the application). I can ignore this and there doesnt seem to be a problem(?), but it happens everytime I click on that field. (winXP pro SP3 32-bit; Radeon 4770)

btw. is there no field any more to tick a 'use 3dlut file' box? how does it work now with such files?

and the "reset defaults" button for all those configurations is missing atm :D

madVR v0.28 released
:thanks: for the new build!
* fixed: new frame drop logic (v0.27) sometimes dropped more than necessary
so it's like in 0.26 now, or it's a new algorithm again?
* first draft of completely new settings dialog

* added video/audio/subtitle switching functionality to tray icon
subs? but mVR doesn't have a subs pin, does it? and HMS already does all this, what's the point to do it in mVR?
* removed timing model tweak option

so it's like the previous "normal" timings? Aero's gone?

Ouch. That DID work at some time, I explicitly tested it. Seems it got broken again later with some other changes I made.

IVTC is for content which was originally filmed in 24p progressive and which was converted from 24 to 60i for encoding (DVD, D-Theater) or for broadcasting. For such kind of content the DScaler IVTC mod should work perfectly.

Sport events, music concerts and TV shows are often native interlaced video content. For this kind of content you can't use IVTC.

The D-Theater intro scene (first 20 seconds or so) is video content and you will see combing when using the DScaler IVTC mod. But for the real movie, after the intro, the DScaler IVTC mod has worked perfectly for me so far. Maybe you downloaded the old DScaler version? Make sure you have the latest one.

Did you ask your Firewall to block madVR? The communication between madVR and the tray icon and the settings dialog is done through TCP/IP, so you have to allow madVR to use TCP/IP.

HMS already does all this, what's the point to do it in mVR?
There are several points:

(1) If you don't see the need, then feel free to not use it.
(2) HMS does not support every container format. Not all splitters allow switching subtitles etc via tray icon menu.
(3) Maybe you missed the fact that the whole logic works over LAN? Can HMS do that? ;)

so it's like the previous "normal" timings? Aero's gone?
Yes, Aero and "high refresh rate" are gone, "normal" is always used.

2) ok, will do!

Thanks for the new version.

Black screen freeze looks to be fixed here but have no time to see if frame dropping issues are solved here presently. Is there any reason why you removed the high refresh rate timing model?

Personally I'm not to keen on the new menu system used for settings, I don't think its very user friendly though I understand its a first draft. This goes for any program that uses this kind of system. I more like how the settings were before and then simply adding more pages via tabs across the top to break it down into different sections. I can live with it though.

Found a minor issue with the tray icon. If you use the edit settings option and then close the player before closing the settings window the tray icon will not vanish when its set to do so. Then if you close the settings window the tray icon still does not vanish, you need to physically choose the exit option in the tray icon settings.

yeah, I don't see the point to make it work over LAN....we're in the era of wifi

Not sure how "wifi" in your area works, but on this planet all wifi solutions actually are a local area network (LAN).

I think a LAN-controlled madVR is a brilliant idea. It allows anyone to build madVR "controllers" on almost any device, including the iPhone.

By the way, you may not know this, but a lot of software both on Windows, Mac and Linux "abuses" local and remote TCP/IP to remote-control software, including Firefox (ever notice how Firefox asks to access 127.0.0.1 on startup?), ZoomPlayer (it listens for remote commands over a local port, which is actually a bridge for many remote controls) and many Virus scanners. Instead of building a proprietary, machine-bound, static-linked API they just listen on TCP/IP sockets. Simple technology, but it just works, no need to install ring-0 device drivers.

Is there any reason why you removed the high refresh rate timing model?
I had asked (a few weeks ago) who needs it and got only very few replies. The main reason why I removed it is that I want the settings to be as simple as possible. Fewer options means better usability. Besides, the final exclusive mode rendering path will do something completely different to the current timing models, anyway.

Personally I'm not to keen on the new menu system used for settings, I don't think its very user friendly though I understand its a first draft. This goes for any program that uses this kind of system. I more like how the settings were before and then simply adding more pages via tabs across the top to break it down into different sections.
What do you mean with "menu system" exactly? And which part of it do you find not user friendly and why?

I think a LAN-controlled madVR is a brilliant idea. It allows anyone to build madVR "controllers" on almost any device, including the iPhone.
Enabling "anyone" to build madVR controllers would be easily possible by publishing the "madHcNet.dll" interface and allowing anyone to distribute that dll with their software. That would work only for win32 applications, though. For other OSs it would be a lot more complicated. E.g. for iPhone support someone would have to replicate the exact same network "protocols" madVR is using.

I assumed madshi was adding lan for this reason but I decided to keep my mouth shut when he said it was a secret. Now that someone else has mentioned it I figured this was the reason for it, mobile devices (iphone) as a movie player remote controls.
Mobile devices are not the main purpose of the network stuff. That said, you guys have a point, mobile remote control would make sense. But the main purpose of madHcNet.dll is still something different (not available yet).

Love the new version (no more black screens!)
Also thanks for all your effort so far.

I have one small problem, though.

When I watch a file and MPC HC closes I usually delete the file.

Now with the new version (0.28) you CAN delete the file.
But you CANNOT delete the folder it's in.

Unlocker states that madHcCtrl.exe has locked it:

http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/8347/unlocker.th.jpg (http://img706.imageshack.us/i/unlocker.jpg/)

So madHcCtrl.exe is not exiting when MPC HC exits.

I only allow 127.0.0.1 lookup for IE, as it acts eratically if I don't...but I don't allow global localhost lookup on my box due to security threats(IP spoof).

I never use wifi either for the same security reasons, but having more thoughts about it I indeed agree that it might come in handy to use mVR remotely from an handheld device...they do it for utorrent, so why not. But these devices hardly ever run windows, so it'd require a SDK I presume.
