Is overlay mode messing up with the 3dlut?
To expand on this a little:
madVR takes over for the GPU's calibration hardware when in Overlay mode. With my 980 Ti madVR actually did a better job applying the 1D Luts (less banding) than the GPU's hardware.
I did a lot of testing with 3DLUTs a while ago and Overlay was the highest quality option, but not by much. The one functional difference is that in Overlay mode madVR clips WtW instead of displaying it as best it can with out of gamut values. This was obvious to me when using test patterns because Overlay mode would clip WtW to white while the other modes would display it as an odd yellow (in my 3DLUT blue was maxed out at 100% white but red and green could go higher).

Good day!
As far as I understood madVR keeps it's settings in Registry (HKCU).
Is there any possibility to keep the settings in a file?
I wanna have same settings for all users of my HTPC.

Install madVR into a location with write permission (not Program Files). It will install a settings.bin in the installation folder.

Hmm I have the MadVr folder inside the MPC-HC folder, which is inside Program Files (x86)... So what is the problem?

Program Files (x86) is a Root directory that is write protected along with any directories that reside beneath it. Unless their R/W rights have been specifically changed, new directories will adopt the R/W permission of the parent (Root) directory.
Your best solution might be to install madVR in a User directory.

R/W rights in that folder should not be a problem if you have admin rights on the machine. Or else MadVr would not be allowed to write any settings, isn't that what you guys are saying?

Being logged on as an Administrator does not mean that applications can access that folder. Applications run with limited rights by default since Vista. Applications that need full rights, such as installers, can request elevation, which triggers a UAC dialog.

A Windows Update could have reset permissions on the folder. Administrator accounts DO NOT have write permission to the Program Files folders by default.
Easiest way to avoid this is to give madVR its own folder at the root of the C: drive. The only file it ever writes is settings.bin.

Just to be clear there is no need to have madVR be able to write to its directory if you don't mind it saving settings to the registry. Everything works fine but you do not get a settings.bin file.

guys, which pixel mode ist recommendet for madvr with amd card?
1. UHD, 60hz, RGB 4:4:4, 8 bit
or
2. UHD, 60hz, YCbCr 4:2:0, 10 bit
I have a LG 55E6 4K OLED tv, which has a 10 bit Panel. Would like to use the 10bit mode in madvr...
Likely #1. Computers don't natively work in YCbCr so you're adding an extra conversion back to YCbCr done by the video card driver and it may not be a high quality conversion. You could use some gradient ramps and try both to check to be sure.

ok, thanks. Hopefully amd will fix the crimson driver. currently I cant do 4:4:4 RGB with 4K 60hz with my rx480

I'm getting green pixelation at the top left corner of the video with Jinc chroma occasionally. Doesn't happen with other scalers.

Install madVR into a location with write permission (not Program Files). It will install a settings.bin in the installation folder.
What I did is:
1. Changed access rights to "full access" for "Users".
2. Opened madVR settings by running madHcCtrl.exe.
3. settings.bin was created in madVR directory - seems OK.
4. Deleted madVR key from Registry.
5. But after running madHcCtrl.exe that Registry key was recreated again!
Seems that Registry key is created anyway.
Does that still mean that all settings will be same for all users anyway?
-----------------------------------------------------
Got one more very important issue.
Sorry for a silly question in advance.
MPC-HC settings include some settings for LAV filter like color formats for output - see the attachment.
Since madVR internally uses 16bit for color I decided to output 16bit color from the player :D.
If I select only RGB48 then doesn't that mean that only 16bit color will be used?
I have Nvidia GTX960 card.
In Nvidia Control Panel "12bit" color output is selected.
TV is Panasonic PR65VT60 plasma (10bit panel).
So, just in case I decided to permit only RGB48 output in MPC-HC.
In case of 1080p videos everything runs smooth.
But in case of 2160p videos (some test clips) no drops too, but it runs very slow (0..2 frames in a queue).
If not only RGB48 is selected (i.e RGB24, RGB32 are selected too) then 2160p videos run smooth.
So I wonder why these stuttering occurred.

done change these settings.
you are just lowering picture quality by doing that.
changing this just mean lavfilter has to convert everything to RGB 48 so it has to chroma upscale using the CPU which is slow and not the best algorithm.
plasma is a technology that is pretty bad in term of bit deep. just saying.

I think the guide would work better if there were step by step instructions (using an example) with screenshots. Too many assumptions on the user's understanding are made in the 'guide'.I would be glad to help you and others. Please do write on the guide's thread. I'm more than willing to put work there to make it better.
Just one thing, though, the guide *does* offer step by step instructions (using an example) with screenshots. Are you talking about this: http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=173571 ?

done change these settings.
you are just lowering picture quality by doing that.
Could you be more specific - what do you mean by "don't change"?
By default all checkboxes are ON except RGB48.
For getting "10bit output with madVR" it was proposed to set RGB48=ON (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=172128).
So, what do you mean:
- do not set RGB48=ON;
- do not change default settings at all;
- smth else?
changing this just mean lavfilter has to convert everything to RGB 48 so it has to chroma upscale using the CPU which is slow and not the best algorithm.
I believed that chroma upscaling is done by madVR.

You don't need to enable RGB48 to get 10bit output. The default settings are already optimal. RGB48 is only needed for those 16-bit test patterns from that topic, not for normal video playback.
Clammerz

I believed that chroma upscaling is done by madVR.
Only when it is not done by the decoder. Unticking the options in LAVfilter that you have forces the decoder to upscale the chroma. It has to, because it needs to convert to RGB.
madVR can only upscale chroma if the decoder gives it unscaled chroma.
Let LAVfilter pass any format to madVR.

Check if some expensive settings don't work anymore that worked with older drivers.
There was definitely such an issue with one of the 16.5 Crimson drivers, SuperRes got slowed down and I had to use a setting with less passes. Luckily, it got fixed with the next driver.

Yes performance is restored on the current version 16.9.1. I can use 'reduce ringing artifacts' and SuperRes again.

i have no clue what general issues with driver are here in this thread but fine...
usually an AMD card with more GFLOPs was faster in madVR.
the limited data we have showed that'S not the case.
the RX 480 should be better for the money because the 4GB version is very cheap and enough for madVR.
the 1060 3GB is a possibility too.
the current AMD drivers are pretty much broken anyway.
aufkrawall
10th September 2016, 15:10
Additionally, the 480 can be very power hungry and there are probably less good custom cooling designs than for the 1060.
On top of that, clock behavior of my R9 390 when using its video decoder was really terrible. It mostly ran with full clocks (H.264 1080p 30fps...). From what I read, AMD did not really improve their clock behavior with Polaris.
As a sidenote: With my 1070 I can play 4k 60fps VP9 video in Edge with DXVA, both CPU & GPU are in powersaving mode (not the lowest possible, though, but with low power consumption)...

but shouldn't be the composition rate at 23,976?
Edit:
found something strange: If I choose D3D11, 10 bit, I get a composition rate of 24hz. If I change to D3D11, 8 bit, composition rate is 23,976.
Madshi, is that a normal behavior or a bug?

Hello,
Does anyone know how to disable the intel display power management on an intel skylake desktop cpu?
I am having some issues with my HD 530 and madVR and i noticed with gpuz that the issues arrise from the power savings of the igpu.
It will go to 100% gpu usage at 350mhz and then increase state to 900mhz and the usage will drop. So the issue is that the states do not switch properly sometimes and as a result i am getting screen flashes. Once it goes to a higher state then everything is smooth.

They are already set at Max Performance. And the igpu sub menu as well.

I also just now saw that Intel is crushing black on full rgb as a result everything is looking dark and shadow details are lost. I got Lav Output (Untouched) ----> MadVR (Full RGB) ---> Intel Input Range (Full RGB) ----> Intel Quantization (Full RGB) ----> TV HDMI (Full RGB). Black clipping .mp4 test file is blinking till 18, so 17 is black as is 16 as a result everything looks darker. Same settings on AMD are giving me a blinking 17 so it is working there.
I wonder if this is a known issue.

TV can do this just by aging.

I desided to try out the x64 version of MadVr + Smooth motion + 60 Hz to see if this could be as smooth or better than the x86 version + Reclock + 24 Hz on my TV and HTPC. Well it is not. Reclock + 24 Hz for my 23.976 fps content is way more smooth. So I guess I'm stuck with the x86 version then. Any others here who agree?

Question about MVC files : I can't get MPC-HC (neither MPC-BE) + madvr play MVC files in stereo throug my GTX 960 to my Benq projector. I switched to Windows 10 just for its native capability to output MVC 3D through HDMI.
Stereoscopic works flawlessly, but I couln't not make MPCHC+Madvr work. I'm using two display, one with no 3D capability, and one with 3D activated in windows display settings panel.
Any idea how what's wrong? How to know whether madvr is responsible?
