My HD4000 is not sufficient for the best settings in MadVR (Jinc3 + AR) for all content. There are a few versions of it though with slightly different clock speeds and mine is the slowest, IIRC.
I think I'll change to Evr for the moment, maybe if I get a new monitor I will switch back to Madvr

You could just use MadVR with the "High" settings from Niyawa's chart (http://i.imgur.com/HLv1qmj.png) couldn't you? Surely that is better than EVR?

How can we determine the most appropriate flush settings for exclusive and windowed mode for our hardware? My system has an i7 3770k and GTX 670 2GB, if anything can be concluded from that.
You don't need to worry about any of it do you? I know with a GTX Titan I can just leave everything at the defaults.

I don't know about your mb and bios, but my Asus includes Intel settings for enhanced iGPU performance. Make sure you're using the latest bios, or at least one that specifically has Ivy Bridge support.

because vsync interval is 1/refresh rate, and with frc, refresh rate=frame rate?

Default flush settings should be fine for most people, only rare cases you actually need to worry about those.
What is "present" for anyway? You said that "rendering" is the real one, so what would "present" be for? Also, is anyone aware of the rare cases when you need to change the flush settings?

madvr is not a media player, it is a video scaler/renderer, it is used with media players such as mpc-hc, mpc-be, and pot player

In MPC-HC Options, under Output select madVR as your DirectShow video renderer. Once a video is loaded, you can use the MPC-HC right-click Filters choice to set madVR options.
There's lots of good information in this thread about what settings to use based on your hardware's capabilities.

Did a quick search in here but heard from the MPC-HC devs that there is a know problem with flashing subtitles with MadVR using MPC-HC built in subtitle renderer when capturing video in MPC-HC.
Has this been reported to be fixed? Or can I do anything to help?
Tested in MPC-HC, the subtitles in question are DVB-T and DVB-T2 broadcasted ones in the UK.

Guys, I've got a problem that I hope someone here will be able to help me solve.
Yesterday I upgraded my video card from GTX 460 SE to GTX 660 with the hope that I'll be able to use Jinc 3taps for all my content.
As expected the new card can handle it but not in the lower power states. That would have been just fine with me if only there was a way to force the card in one of the the two higher states (P0/P2). Sadly Nvidia Inspector and Multi-monitor power saver can only set a top/max limit not a low/minimal one.
So my question is what do you use to control your Kepler's card power states?
Without this I get constant frame drops every minute or so when the card changes states.

Any idea why I can play most 720p mkvfiles but with 1080p I just get a black screen and audio plays for a while then stops? I have an AMD 6650M and I've tried lots of different drivers but no luck. It used to work but I can't remember when it started because I mostly play 720p. Could have been when I upgraded to Win8 I suppose...
Using MPC-HC Lite b7069, LAV 0.56.2 with no hw-accel., MadVR 0.86.1 on Win8 Pro x64.
Any ideas what to try? Settings etc?

Have just tried the smooth motion, love it ! My display runs at 50Hz or 60Hz, I can select either. My movie is 23.976fps. Now I can playback without any judder and use my DTS audio.
Previously I was using reclock, which has worked flawlessly for me.
So, question 1 : I know the answer to this is "it's subjective, try it and see what I think is best", but ..... purely technically speaking, will smooth motion produce a less sharp image than original. Reason I ask is I am wondering if there is any reason why reclock would be (technically speaking) a much better option (for the video content at least)
Question 2 : Why is a higher refresh rate screen "better" when using smooth motion, is it because blur images can be more equally spaced or is it because you will need less of them.
Question 3 : If my screen is native 1280x720 and my movie is 1280 x 720 (or 1280 x 528 for example), does madvr not do any upscaling. If so, do the different algorithms have no effect.

The color information of most video (a bluray for example) is 1/2 the resolution of the black and white information. So the Y channel is 1920x1080 and the U and V channels are 960x540. This means the U and V needs to be resized to match the Y so the chroma resize options are used even when watching 1080p on a native 1080p display but the "Image" resize options are not.

Describing 4:2:0 chroma as half resolution (implying half width & height) isn't wrong, only a different way of referring to it.
If using this definition, you'd refer to 4:2:2 chroma as half horizontal resolution.
Video resolution is often talked about in relationship of width & height, rather than total pixels.

let me preface by saying that this is just a guess -
rendering time is too high. choose faster scaling.
also, backbuffer queue is low I think. overclocking vram may help there?

HD is always described as 4-5 times the resolution of SD, not 2.5 times.
Marketing prefers using big numbers. As far resizing and video/image properties are concerned, thinking in total pixels is almost useless for anything but considerations of pixel processing performance.

960x1080 is half horizontal resolution in comparison to 1920x1080. Vertical resolution is unchanged, so the difference in horizontal pixels is the only detail which matters.
If someone says half horizontal resolution of 1920x1080, you would know without a doubt they mean 960x1080.
If someone said half total pixels of 1920x1080, you would have no clue what resolution they are referring to, it could be 5x207360 for all you knew.

If I ever said something like "three quarters" or 75% of 1920x1080, I would be talking about 1440x810 which maintains the original aspect ratio.
Open a 1920x1080 video clip in Adobe Premiere, set scale to 75%, and the result is 1440x810.
Open a 1920x1080 image in Adobe Photoshop and resize to 75% with default settings, and the result is 1440x810.
Open a 960x540 video your media player of choice and set zoom/size to 200% (Double), and the result is 1920x1080.
Open a 1920x1080 video your media player of choice and set zoom/size to 50% (Half), and the result is 960x540.
When you state resolution as a percentage of video or image dimensions, it's standard practice maintain aspect ratio with the percentage applied to both width and height, unless stated otherwise. This is also the reason why many applications don't use percentages at all, and require you specify pixels width and pixels height separately. The moral is to use the terminology which best suits your purpose. In most cases, using total pixels (megapixels) as a descriptive unit of measurement is the wrong tool for the job.

I don't use it, but there's an overclocking utility called NVIDIA Inspector that apparently can control Kepler power states using command lines in a batch file. If it works, you could have one batch file for use when running madVR, and another to return the card to normal operating mode. Maybe someone here has experience with this utility, or you could Google for more info.

nvcuvid through lav is supposed to force P0, otherwise nvidiainspector -forcepstate:0,2 for P2, -forcepstate:0,0 for P0.

I had a similar problem, turned out lowering the gpu queue fixed it. IGP didn't have enough dedicated VRAM.

960x540 is a quarter of 1920x1080, not half.
1/2 the resolution = 1/4 the number of pixels. Don't listen to marketing. :rolleyes:
The in both dimensions is implied, you would use horizontal or vertical before resolution if you meant in just a single dimension. This is so your readers don't have to do square roots.
1/2 the resolution doesn't mean 1920*0.70710678118654752440084436210485 x 1080*0.70710678118654752440084436210485

Strangely enough i actually got better performance with the trade quality for performance options turned off. Yours may be different tho, so use whatever you know works better.
Those are similar to my GTS 250 settings too, except I have all the anti-ringing filters enabled and linear light for Smooth Motion and downscaling. The GT 430 should be pretty similar in terms of MadVR capability.

I've had the same problem some times ago, lots of dropped/delayed frames even with lower settings. The problem was my graphic card that can't handle DXA2CB in LAV.
If you're using DXVA, try to disable it.
Right now, I've set 'Hadware Decoder to use' to 'None' but DXVA2 Native also works. I wonder if I should use DXVA2 Native with my current settings :confused:

I've had the same problem some times ago, lots of dropped/delayed frames even with lower settings. The problem was my graphic card that can't handle DXA2CB in LAV.
If you're using DXVA, try to disable it.
Right now, I've set 'Hadware Decoder to use' to 'None' but DXVA2 Native also works. I wonder if I should use DXVA2 Native with my current settings :confused:

You can't expect anyone to give any sort of concrete advice if you don't even tell what GPU you're using. All I can say is that your rendering time is pretty much on the edge, try lowering that by using less GPU intensive scaling algorithm and bigger backbuffers values.

I didn't knew that madvr was THAT gpu intensive.
anyway, changing the scaling algorithms ti bilinear gives me more delayed and dropped frames somehow :confused:
gonna stick with evr-cp on this machine for now :(

Well, madVR uses the GPU shaders for rendering so that's to be expected. Follow madshi's advice and keep using bilinear otherwise things will be worse. Your GPU has less shader speed than mine Intel 4500MHD so I'm the living proof of that. Also, try lowering the queue to lowest you can and see if that helps.

Ditto. On my laptop with a GeForce GTX 560M (using CUVID on MPC-HC via the renaming trick), with madVR set to Jinc3+AR for both upscalings, I sometimes get dropped frames in Windowed mode. As soon as I switch to FSE, dropped frames disappear.
NOT saying you'll be able to run Jinc3+AR, but if you get no dropped frames in FSE, then you can tweak the scaling until you hit the wall.
FWIW, I have to UNcheck "use a separate device for presentation" (as is noted somewhere in this thread).

Thanks, I'll give it a try. Although my 6650M is supposed to have 2GB of dedicated VRAM...
On boards like to use 'up to' which means shared system ram. 6650M doesn't have much info out there, I have seen up to 2GB listed on a few sites. My old desktop onboard HD4200 had 128MB of dedicated vram, but could use up to 2GB. 1080p24 uses about 220MB of vram with windows 7 with 4 gpus queue, with 8 gpu queue (default) it's using 260MB. Anyhow you can check it out with process explorer to see if it's ram or gpu load. Load issue has always been dropped frames for me, ram being no video.

- Why is Jinc 3 the "maximum" quality on Niyawa's chart (http://i.imgur.com/HLv1qmj.png)? Is increasing it to 4/8 taps not giving any viable advantage?
- Activating "smooth motion" makes screenshots in mpc-hc stop working. Do you have any idea why?

I think there is no improvement going to higher taps for Jinc but give it a try and see for yourself. Madshi has recommended not using more than 3 taps with Jinc several times in this thread.

This is a known issue but I don't know why.

It's basically what Asmodian said. Me and the members of this forum had a pretty good discussion about the chart and they mentioned that Jinc at 3 taps is more than good enough. The smooth motion and screenshots is a bug that I believe madshi is already aware of.
