Now I need your FEEDBACK, once again:
1) Do you like the new "NGU Standard" and "NGU Soft" variants? Personally, I like "NGU Standard" a lot. But I think "NGU Soft" is too soft to be useful, and I'd like to remove it again. But since I spent a lot of time creating it, I thought I'd let you test it, at least.
2) Does "NGU Standard" work better for (non-aliased) low quality content now? Or do we still have to use NGU AA for that? Ideally I hope that we can now use "NGU Sharp" for high quality soures, "NGU Standard" for low quality (but aliasing free) sources, and "NGU AntiAlias" only for aliased sources. Is that reasonable? Or is "NGU AA" still the best option for any low quality sources, aliasing free or not?
3) I want to remove the "Soften Edges" option, because "NGU Standard" was made to replace it. Any objections?
4) With all the changes in this build, I feel that "double twice" is no longer needed. "direct quadrupling" should now always be identical or superior in quality and much faster. So I would like to remove "double twice". Any objections?
1) I like both NGU Standard and NGU Soft. But I have no problem if you remove NGU Soft.
2) NGU AA looks better to me than NGU Standard for low quality content.

I think my eyes have started to like NGU variants too much. Now I don’t feel the need for NNEDI3 anymore. For all the content where NNEDI3 looked the best previously, either of NGU AA or NGU Standard gives a better picture there. Very happy with the upscaling results.

You're probably right. But what about quality?
Pure decoding does not change the video in any way, it always outputs perfect bit-exact YUV 4:2:0 images (in NV12 format, or P010 for 10-bit), so the quality is always pristine. This can be easily verified by comparing the pixel output from the decoder with a software decoder.
Thats the beauty of modern codecs like H.264 and HEVC - their specification calls for exact decoding, so any output can always be verified (older codecs like mpeg2 allowed for small differences in decoding, so there is no "exact" baseline).
If you use DXVA2 for video processing, thats another matter, but LAV Video does not do that, and madVR only does it if you select the DXVA2 scaling modes - but it likely compensates for the matrix in other ways.

I'm not completely sure how the flickering looks like, and where it comes from. Nobody else seems to have this problem. Can you describe how it looks like in more detail? Or maybe you can shoot a short video with your smartphone and upload it somewhere? (Helps only if the flickering can be seen on the video, of course).
It's very difficult to record this. What i see are horizontal lines, they're semi transparent and very flebile, like when i had the wrong frash rate for my monitor.

Well, in HDR passthrough mode madVR should not do anything to the pixels (except convert them from YCbCr 4:2:0 to RGB), so the green push is likely to come either from the source itself, or from the projector handling it incorrectly. You could try disabling the "calibration controls" or to set "this display is already calibrated to BT.2020" or "DCI" or "BT.709", but I think in HDR passthrough mode these settings are ignored, anyway. I'm not 100% sure right now, though.
Yea, I agree that it is probably my projector that got is BT.2020 color mode really setup for DCI since this is the format for UHD movie. I am now trying to figure out what is the real difference between BT.2020 and DCI-P3 so I can try and ajust a custom color mode.
I will also try to play with the "calibration controls" to see if it help.

That's currently not possible.
It's very difficult to record this. What i see are horizontal lines, they're semi transparent and very flebile, like when i had the wrong frash rate for my monitor.
This sounds to me like tearing. Tearing means that e.g. the top half of the screen shows video frame X, and the bottom half of the screen shows video frame "X+1". So basically one half of the screen is already showing the next video frame. You won't even notice this problem when there's no motion on screen. But if there's motion, you'll see that the top half has a different motion position than the bottom half, which will appear as a somewhat flickering line in the middle of the screen. The tearing line doesn't have to be in the middle of the screen, it can be anyhwere.
Does that sound like what you're seeing? If so, please double check your GPU settings. There's a setting for VSync somewhere. Do you have it turned off? It should be set to "application controlled". GSync/FreeSync should also be turned off. If that still doesn't help, try activating Overlay mode (it's not supported by AMD GPUs, though), or try using fullscreen exclusive mode.

I have just tested it and I am amazed by the result.
I don't even need to comment, this is a 720p image upscaled to 4K with the best settings I could find for madVR :

No, it will be a completely different algo. For images like this, try Bilateral in madVR.

Could it be the GPU driver which disables the ICC profile in fullscreen mode? I'm not sure. Did this happen before the win10 update?
I think that it happened after the win10 update.I have a monitor and a TV connected.It happens only for the monitor,TV works fine.
Which "open window"? Is that window an "on top" window? The settings dialog should be "on top" all other windows, unless the other windows are "on top", too. That's a specific window style.
Look what happens here (http://imgur.com/a/XOIko).Notice the blue line on the bottom.I just clicked on the upscaling algo and it opened behind the window,not in front to choose.It seems that if I click on OK after clicking edit settings problem gets solved though.

The problem seems to be chroma bleeding in madVR.
It is better with Bilateral Sharp, but still really not as good as SuperChromaRes :

Edit : Yes, big problem, the "Improve Chroma Reconstitution" option of MPDN works very well for red text on black background, but the result is very strange with a normal image :

Win10's 'Film & TV' player plays HDR content correctly. It is just a rubbish player for everything else and has no support for high definition audio codecs like TrueHD or DTS-HD. I also notice using MPC I get a hell of a lot more dropped frames on 4K content.
'Movies & TV' on creators update now gives me the 0xc00d6d6e error on attempts to play 10-bit 4K hevc clips, which were played fine before. I think MS has changed something very basically.

Hi,
When I use a 3d Lut file and activate the option "disable gpu gamma ramps" should I also activate the "rendering->general settings->enable windowed overlay" option too? I have an ICC calibration for the monitor too, but it is independent of the 3d Lut calibration for Madvr.
What does option "enable windowed overlay"? I always use it in "full screen exclusive mode".
I read the explanation of the options in madvr but it is not clear to me.

Exclusive mode disables Windowed Overlay, so does Direct3D 11.
Windowed Overlay is a special GPU driver mode, in a way like exclusive vs windowed. However, it uses alternative GPU display hardware that bypasses the GPU calibration hardware (skipping the windows profile) and most of the operating system.
Usually you shouldn't use the disable gpu gamma ramps option but there isn't a reason to want to use windowed overlay when you are using it. When using a 3DLUT with a calibration attached (linear or otherwise) madVR autoloads it and ignores the "disable gpu gamma ramps" option. When using Windowed Overlay madVR copies the values from the currently loaded calibration and applies them itself, depending on your GPU's calibration hardware this can offer much better quality or be basically the same.

I have 2 calibrations made with Calman 5. A 3d Lut for Madvr and an ICC profile for Windows. I need Madvr to ignore/disable the ICC profile when I watch a movie because they both have the same calibration. What should I do? Enable the option "disable GPU gamma ramps" and also "Windowed Overlay"?

The problem is that if I do not enable the "disable gpu gamma ramps" option, the Windows calibration profile continues, it is not disabled. When I enable the "disable gpu gamma ramps" option, the Windows profile is disabled.
I think it's because Calman's ICC Manager works differently.

if the 3D LUT was created with the GPU ramp off it will disable it automatically.

No, madVR loads what is attached to the 3DLUT and ignores that option. It only matters if nothing is attached to the 3DLUT.

Nope, it's not tearing (at least i think). I disabled VSync but problem persist. I've no GSync/FreeSync.
I'm on fullscreen exclusive mode, i'm on an MSI R9 270X.
It's more like a "video interference" like when you have a phone near the monitor, don't know how to explain.
I solved this in games, (during night this was more evident) by switching monitor to 60 to 75 Hertz. I had it in the black bars in the movies too. But this solved it. But problem persists in video portion of screen.

Hello,
first of all a big thanks to the creator of madvr for his work.
I am using MPC-HC and I have this problem which I can't solve and would like some help. I already searched for similar problems but, maybe I missed something, couldn't find anything substantial.
The thing is I watch videos in exclusive fullscreen, but on rare occasions when I try to exit fullscreen I get a black screen. Right clicking or alt-tabbing or anything else results in a black screen. I already posted on another forum and they told me to disable exclusive fullscreen which probably solves my problem (can't be 100% since it doesn't happen often) but I don't find this an acceptable solution since I get performance issues when doing that.
I wonder if anyone knows or can take a guess as to what causes the issue. I can't really trial&error the various configuration choices to see if it gets solved because that doesn't happen often and I can't be sure.

@Akim, I doubt there's very little that can be done. MPC, LAV and madVR are all coded particularly well and any potential gains would be fairly insignificant and not worth the development time.
I very much doubt you will ever see any improvements in the area of clock speeds and RAM during use, sorry. There's really nothing to correct, if memory consumption is that important then
use another player+filter and renderer combination.

My HD7850 have died yesterday. Until then, it was keeping frequencies without falling to 2D profile. Try to use another driver version, disable DXVA etc.

Have any solutions (other than disabling FSE/Direct3D 11 mode or using 24.000Hz refresh rate) presented themselves for fixing Creator's Update issues?
EDIT: It appears that Creator's Update issue can be resolved by disabling fullscreen optimizations for the .EXE files used to play-back whichever content. Simply navigate to .EXE settings -> Compatibility tab and check "Disable Fullscreen Optimizations". I assume this has to be done for the player .EXE itself (like MPC-HC.EXE) and all madVR .EXE files..? I am going to test this now...

Yeah... That is my question, but I just tried and per-app method did NOT work - still getting crazy frames drops every 30 seconds at 23.970Hz refresh rate...
I just wish I knew what exactly Game Mode does and not just vague explanations MS and other people are giving. My system is optimized and tweaked to sh*ts and I may very much not even need Game Mode, but I can't know for sure until I know exactly what it does and how it affects things.

Game Mode is independent of the Game bar (if you turned it on, it'll stay on even if the bar is off). Additionally, the bar also causes issues in a variety of games, so there is that.

you have to turn it in manually for each game, only way to do so is through game bar.
On a different issue im having madvr no longer works, could be something i did or just the creators update, but i reinstalled plenty of times first time i ever encountered this:

But i think windows for me has been acting funny overall. Might just reinstall everything.
edit: PC is the problem not madvr, but madvr exposed the problem to me.

That is exactly it - my GPU for some reason downclocks massively sometimes when running Hi10P full screen since the creators update - any idea how to prevent this? Clocking in at 2 GHz when windowed and then dropped to 600Mhz full screen. This only seems to happen with HI10P

It can reduce aliasing a bit but may look slightly worse if the source has lots of ringing. I'd enable it.

Madvr mpc-hc lav-filters are very good and stable, but Madvr makes this bundle resource-intensive with soft decoding
Evr renderer is all good but does not support subtitles and crash when rewinding since I use ReClock and soft decoding

3D "jumping" and MPC-BE freezing after stopping playback...
Hi, I have set up a small media PC with a Kaby Lake Intel i5 7200U and HD Graphics 620 in Win10x64...
to ensure whether the Setup works, I have basically used the madVr Defaults (like Cubic scaling), just to make sure it works in principal with MPC-BE...
after some trouble with MPC-BE due to lacking Admin rights (not able to wright its ini-file), 2D full HD works (on a FHD Screen; mkv-files);
but 3D does not. the TV is switched to 3D but the movie is constantly "jumping" back a few Frames "every second", so the Picture is very jerky; I have defined a hot-key for closing MPC-BE; if i use this, MPC-BE freezes (does not happen with 2D material); the only way to come out of this is to shut down the Computer;

There is no 10 bit setting in the nvidia control panel, only 8 & 12. Can madvr output 12 bit or there is some other limitation or setting I have missed? This is windows 10 and mpc-hc.

If your monitor/TV/etc supports 12bit the Nvidia driver won't show 10bit.

h264, 8 bit, 4:2:0 -> NV12, 8 bit, 4:2:0
primaries BT709
gtx 980ti card is set to 12 bit 4:4:4
projector seeing 12 bit YUV. Who is dithering what?

there is a lot happening there but madVR is sending 10 bit RGB to the GPU driver.

I am using a HDMI extender between my HTPC and Projector that is capable of 2160p but max 30 Hz.
Therefore I would like to send 1080p 50/60 fps content in 1080p resolution to my prjector instead of upscaling to 2160p.
Resolution of windows is set to 3840x2160@30Hz
the display properties in madvr to:
2160p23, 2160p24, 2160p25, 2160p29, 2160p30, 1080p50, 1080p60
It works, Madvr sends 1080p @ 50/60 fps content in 1080p 50/60 Hz to my projector, HOWEVER I do see only a quarter of what should be displayed. Seems like the image is still upscaled to 2160p and only a quarter of it is displayed on the projector.
Can you make a screenshot of the OSD (Ctrl+J) when this problem occurs? It could be a bug in the media players, asking for this weird "zoom" config. It could be a weird bug in madVR. It could be a bug in the GPU drivers. Or in the OS. It's really hard to say. A screenshot of the OSD might help figuring a few things.
Actually I am never able to make a screenshot when CTRL-J is enabled, since the screenshot will always be a black screen. But anyway, I made a picture ;-)
So the display is in 1080P50 and if I understand correctly from the CTRL-J information, madvr is still upscaling to 4K while it should not. Am I correct?
As you can see only about a quarter of the image is displayed on the display because of the unwanted upscaling from 1080P to 4K.

abload the screen somewhere else. a screen uploaded using the forum can take a while.
it is clearly stated "Attachments Pending Approval" i wonder why user usually don't notice this.

Of course I notice this, but I have no idea if that will take a minute or a week...
