But if I turn off deinterlacing in madVR, I do get an interlaced signal out (I see combing), but my TV thinks it's progressive. I've tried setting the "display mode" in madVR to 1080i50, but still my TV reads it as "1080p". Which also begs the question when might adding interlaced options to "display modes" of a TV/display be useful...
madVR is still transforming this to RGB and by doing this the interlaced image can't be deinterlaced anymore because the chroma channel is ruined.
interlaced output works by taking an progressive image and turn this into an interlaced image in the GPU. so you are not winning anything from this.
if you want to send an interlaced image disable display modes and set your screen to an interlaced mode if available.

Well, imagine an out of gamut highly saturated greenish color. It might have RGB values [50, 320, 40]. Now if you do nothing, 320 will at some point be clipped by someone to 255, so the color will mutate to [50, 255, 40]. This is a different hue than the original color, which is not good. A better method would be to either darken the color (divide all 3 components by 320/255). But we don't really want to darken colors, either. So we could try to desaturate the color. But in which color space? E.g. YCbCr or even XYZ or xyY are not hue linear. So desaturating colors in those color spaces will still change hue slightly (but not as much as naive clipping). So the "Preserve hue" option allows you to switch between different methods. Of course the "high quality" setting is the best, but also the slowest.
- measure each frame's peak luminance
This measures each frame's peak luminance, and then uses these measurements to optimize the tone mapping curves to each frame in the video. Without those measurements there's currently only one global metadata per video available. But not all scenes in a movie are identical! In some scenes you have much higher peak luminance pixels than in other scenes. So one global peak number for the whole movie is not optimal. At some point we might get dynamic metadata to allow peak luminance metadata per scene. But it's not available yet, so these measurements are something I came up with to optimize quality right now as much as possible.
- Restore details in compressed highlights.
When doing tone mapping, you're compressing highlight image areas into a smaller data range. Doing that is necessary, but results in lost details. So the "Restore details" option tries to restore the detail that was lost due to tone mapping. It does so by selectively sharpen the image (only where it's needed). This option is rather subtle, but in some scenes there's a visible difference. (Upscaling is not involved.)

So I updated my driver and it switches to stereoscopic resolution when I play mvc mkv file. But I'm not getting 3d. Its like it's switching to 3d and playing the 2d file and then when I exit, it stays in 3d resolution and I need to manually go to display panel and turn off 3d to get back to normal 1080p resolution.

If it occurs again, please describe in more detail how the video lags. I'm not fully sure what you mean. But if the problem is already gone, as is well, of course.
Hello, the issue has not reappeared so far after resetting, I think it might have been something because I had been using the same settings file since at least 0.85.5
But for the sake of explanation, the FSE lag I was experiencing is hard to describe - it was not smooth, like camera panning judder except it was happening in every single scene. The motions were not smooth, felt off, slightly delayed but not enough to have any audio syncing issues.

yes there is one additional way i know.
by using bilinear chroma scaling and DXVA image scaling dxva is used for chroma scaling if image scaling is needed else it is using your normal chroma scaler
i never heard a positve word about dxva chroma scaling and quality depends on the used hardware and/or driver.

Yes, Windows 8.1 is currently more stable for video playback.

Windows 10 is working nice on my PC, but if Madvr performes much better under Windows 8.1 I would very much like to know, and why, if you can spare the time explaining this to me. Thanx :)

If I remember right, I read AMD drivers sometimes cause the render queue to drop. Does anyone know if this has been fixed in certain driver versions?
I'm having frame drops from time to time, I dunno if they are a render queue issue or an SVP issue. It certainly is exacerbated with SVP but I dunno if that is the case because SVP takes too long for some frames or if the GPU just has more to do so I see the issue.

this doesn't sound like an AMD driver problem too me. r9 270 was working very well in the past. and yes of cause SVP could cause to high GPU usage from time to time so madVR has to drop frames.
but this is still a guess within the given information.

Without SVP the queues sometimes empty themselves for no apparent reason, render time is about 6 ms. I do not get dropped frames in that instance.
With SVP the queues empty approximately just as often with the difference that I do get dropped frames.
If I enlarge the GPU queue size, the frame drops with SVP seize to happen (enlarging the present queue on the other hand gives me dropped frames). It seems I need about 16 frames in advance in my render queue. I'm on Catalyst 15.7.1 with an r9 290.

Haven't had a single issue with 10 and madVR. Stick with 10.

Do you need this old driver for SVP, or why are you still using it?
I'm not using SVP and latest Crimson 16.6.1 works very well for me in madVR (with software decoding). GPU is R9 390.

In v0.90.20 display's peak luminance is set to 120 nits and it works like a charm.
In v0.90.21 The problem appear when the value is at 120 nits or 180 nits.
At 256 nits the images look good.
Another thing: if I set any value to display's peak luminance and then I disable the HDR processing, the display's value will not reset.

I played with the settings in Madvr, it appears to now be switching resolutions properly back and forth but the file playing still does not appear to be in 3d. Does anyone have a small test file I could try in case this one isn't working correctly?

Thanks for the new build. I will play with the new HDR related options by the weekend.
I have questions regarding the gamma used for HDR tone mapping. If I understand it correctly, SMPTE 2084 transfer function doesn’t specify any gamma. After madVR decodes the SMPTE 2084 content and compresses the highlights, it ends up with linear light content which it gamma corrects depending upon what gamma the user is targeting:
If the user has selected in madVR settings “this display is already calibrated to gamma: x.xx” then madVR will use the inverse of gamma x.xx after compressing the highlights to gamma correct the video. Suppose the user’s display is calibrated to gamma 2.4. In which step of the processing chain, does madVR gamma correct the video with gamma 2.4: before image scaling or after scaling?
If it is done before image scaling then if Linear Light setting is used for say downscaling, does madVR use gamma 2.4 (in the given case) for linear light processing? Or irrespective of the video gamma madVR always uses gamma 2.2 for linear light processing?
If it is done after image scaling, what gamma does madVR use for image scaling in gamma light? Does madVR gamma correct the video with gamma 2.2 first after compressing the highlights and then after image scaling, gamma correct it with 2.4 (in the given case)?
If the user is using a 3dlut, then what gamma does madVR use to gamma correct the video before 3dlut processing? Suppose the user is using a 3dlut to get an effective 2.4 gamma output on their display. Will madVR gamma correct the video with 2.4 gamma before 3dlut processing? What about the case of BT.1886 gamma? Also, I have the same questions here too as in point 1, regarding at what stage of the processing – before or after scaling, madVR gamma corrects the video with 2.4 gamma (in the given case).

If my monitor's brightness is 250 cd/m2.... then its max nits is 250, correct?
Also, there's an option that states it won't work with DXVA scaling... so i need to turn off DXVA copy-back?

Unfortunately thats not quite how it works. Just get some HDR material and test which looks best to you.

He doesn't have to, you can easily try it out (I've played with it yesterday). Just pick up different scenes and enable/disable those features (don't forget to hit apply) and you'll see what he means.

I'm having trouble getting framepacking 3d working with MadVR, I have tried both a 3d mounted iso and a 3d mkv mkc test file. I can confirm 3d is working fine with Cyberlink PDVD when I play a mounted bluray iso.
My System:
Windows 10 x64
MadVR 0.90.21
MPC-HC (x64) 1.7.10
LAV 0.68.1 (3d MVC enabled)
Test File:

MadVR Settings:
Display -> 3D format: Auto
Display -> Switch to refresh rate: 1080p23 1080p24 1080p50 1080p59 1080p60

When I playback the movie it just seems to work in 2d mode only. The display doesn't swich to 3d mode and it doesn't receive a framepacked signal. Even if I enable side by side format under settings in madvr still displays a normal picture.
I'd appreciate any help. What is the next step in diagnosing my problem?

make sure the internal filter from mpc-hc aren't used.
then check that the 3d decoder is used running a 3D -> play -> filter -lav video decoder(this should be the internal one) and then check under hardware acceleration active decoder.

MPC-HC Settings -> External Filter -> LAV Splitter & LAV Audio & LAV Video; are all set to preferred.
I played a 3d mkv file, I right clicked on the video during playback, Filters -> LAV Video -> Settings ->
Hardare decoding option: Copy Back / active decoder: dxvan2 / accelerator: HD7700

I got it working, I disabled all internal filters in MPC-HC.
It does seem to sudden stop playback (?Crash) frequently on my system.

For 3D playback you need to install the Intel Media SDK DLLs. This installer puts the required DLLs in the Windows system folder. That way it should also work with the internal LAV Filters of MPC-HC.

Use MCE keyboard as the device. This gives you access to any keyboard command.

This issue still exists. Seems to me that madVR calculates scaling factor = (window height) / (source height), which can activate image doubling even when the image is actually downscaled quite a lot as this example shows (http://imgur.com/a/8EBcV). With doubling set to activate when the scaling factor is 1.2 or bigger, it actually activates when the window height is increased from 839 pixels (first picture) to 840=1.2*700 (second picture) pixels regardless of the window width which in this case actually defines the scaling factor.

Hi guys. Is it normal to not be able to uncheck Chroma doubling if Luma doubling is enabled? There are separate checkboxes, but if I enabled Luma Doubling, I am unable to disable Chroma Doubling. I'm juuuuuust barely able to use super sampling and would love to not double Chroma if it will save system resources.

What did you do to get it working.I have everything working and playing but no 3d actually coming out.
Play a 3d video, then right click -> filters -> lav video. and screenshot what the active decoder is. It should be "msdk mvc". The active decoder is written underneath the box that lets you choose your hardware accleration method in LAV while a video is actually playing. Before i properly disabled internal filters in mpc-hc it was listed as "dxvan2"

Hi madshi,
In windows 10 x64 using Potplayer x64 bit with nvidia 368.39 drivers madVR v0.90.21 I can play NNEDI3 in Chroma Upscaling Nvidia 970 GTX.
Using the same settings in windows Potplayer x64 Nvidia 368.39 MadVR 0.90.21 Nvidia 970M , the movies crashes when it start playing.
What could be the issue ?
2nd question , does Gsync cause issue if it stays enabled for Potplayer ? I didn't see any differences in performance enabled vs disabled , we still need to disable it ?
Where should I upload the log file so you can see.

HDR:
1. When I enable "measure frame luminance" the video freezes completely and not even Ctrl+J shows.
2. I don't think 120 and 180 should elevate the shadows, just treat them as all other modes. *No special recipe needed.
The "compress highlight" option is very useful (for me) also when disabled!
But that means that 120 and 180 should be treated as all other modes.
The "preserve Hue" is also very important because after compressing the highlights the color becomes more saturated than it should be in comparison to an HDR display.
So this option is a MUST and madVR does it very well.
But, I sometimes see some images where "preserve hue" is actually too abrupt in transition between the shades and looks worse than without it.
Usually the color is less saturated (sometimes completely white) with it enabled and the transition might be too steep from color to white...
I believe it is because the somewhat steep knee of the highlight compression algorithm. If the goal is not to compress below 100nit the knee must be sharp/steep.

Is this just for Intel HD Graphics only or is it needed for nvidia and amd users as well?It is a single DLL from the Intel Media SDK. It is a software decoder and works with both Intel and AMD processors. You do of course need a CPU that is fast enough to decode 1080p H.264 up to 60fps (2x24 or 2x30fps). No requirements regarding GPU, since it is a pure software decoder.

MadShi i have asked you before about this but i can't get it to work. You told me that your overlay seekbar could be placed in active movie area when a movie is 2.35:1 did i understand you correctly? and if so how can i make this happen? the subtitles gets moved into active movie area with "zoom control, detect hc black bars, crop black bars", but i can't find any info about the seekbar.

What do the double and triple expanded tags do exactly - simply change black and white levels or also something else? And are both the black and white level changed by a similar amount when using these tags?
As the expanded tags have no effect on my setup for whatever reason, I'm trying to work around it using blacklevel and whitelevel tags to correct washed out picture (washed out blacks) on some videos.
It seems using blacklevel -30% seems kind of right so should I also use whitelevel -30% to "simulate" the expanded tags? Or should whitelevel maybe be increased to compensate? I know very little about how these settings are supposed to work. :scared:

Thanks madshi with 0.90.21 finally worked, but sadly 930m is not strong enough to handle super resolution plus some sharpener on supersampling...
Btw do you have plans to work on some motion compensate sharpener? On some movie specially on very fast motion scenes the sharpen options produces some bad effect like some contrast flashes thas look like the figures have some tremors, this effect can look as stuttering but is not

MPC-HC Nightly 1.7.10.236 was made available on 06 June, try that? :). If you use the nightlies, might as well use the latest.
The freeze issue sounds like a driver problem, I would suggest just try using Super-XBR upscaling instead :), I believe it's a bit lighter on the GPU. You should balance the settings based on the content being played as well. Have you tried not using image doubling, and using:
Chroma upscaling:
super-xbr (sharpness: 150)
activate anti-ringing checked, activate SuperRes filter, strength 1
Image upscaling:
Jinc
activate anti-ringing filter, scale in sigmoidal light
(image downscaling have jinc, anti-ringing relaxed, scale in linear light, 25 percent anti-bloating)
Upscaling refinement:
SuperRes 1, linear light, anti-rining.
Under processing --> Image enhancements
thin edges (say, 2.5 strenth)
enhance detail (say, 1.5 strength)
AdaptiveSharpen at 1.0
anti-bloating at 25 percent
anti-ringing enabled.
I think you'll like that output. You can try playing around with the image enhancement stuff like different strength for enhance detail and thin edges. It isn't a solution to the issue of it crashing with NNEDI being used, but there are other options now that are much more GPU load friendly and produce excellent results, such as the settings I suggested.
