The overall dark setting doesn't really play well with typical encode settings. HDR probably wouldn't really help either, since HDR grading is usually very careful to not do it too dark, since todays TVs screw that up easily. A properly encoded 10-bit SDR video might be nice (to resolve low-light banding), but thats not something anyone does.
Of course a properly graded HDR source woule be nice as well, madVR can map that to our displays just fine. But as said above, TV built-in tonemapping might screw that up easily, so they might be careful to use such dark HDR grading.

That episode really requires a proper UHD release. We should see one this summer and we can revisit it then. For streaming it was brutal. I did not run it through madvr though.
I ran an amazon version through madvr. It was still really bad. I may be out of the loop, where would a summer UHD release come from? Last I did any research, only season 1 has come out with UHD thus far.

If they gave us 20mbit, probably wouldn't have this problem, But I'm guessing they clamped it to account for simultaneous peak bandwidth from millions of viewers.

Yeah 7Mbps doesn't cut it. I read about the issues before playback and took a look, enabled deband on and it was watchable for me but honestly you cannot really fix a sky with three color bands xD
Really disliking how streaming sites aren't offering high quality. They could easily double their bit rate without any significant issues for consumers IMO.
Someone really needs to push this so the rest follow otherwise we'll get this quality for another 5-10 years..

Its not about helping consumers. :p Bandwidth is expensive.
Amazon used to have really high quality encodes, best of all streaming sites, but sometimes in the last 18 months or so they cut it down, so now its just middle of the pack.
Unfortunately one service pushing quality does nothing, since they don't compete on quality. Most content is only available at one service, as such content is the driving factor, not quality.
Can hope they make a high-quality Blu-ray release from this. Perhaps UHD right away, if we're lucky.

Just wanted to report in that the new Nvidia driver does not fix stuttering issues with Turing cards (specifically 1660), but may lessen frequency. Was able to watch 2-3 movies since throwing my 1660 back into my system with new drivers (drivers cleaned between swaps). When watching GoT (not even 4k) last night, stutters came back about halfway through. Switched over to the Plex player and finished watching the episode.
Power management set to adaptive in control panel.
Putting my 1060 back into the system. I'd advise against anyone buying a Turing card with the expectation of using it with MadVR/MPC.
I have not read all your posts, but have you tried my workaround?
Set LAV to DXVA2 copy-back
Set Madvr to present 1 frame in advance for Exclusive Mode
It's the only thing that works for me every time.

I really avoid exclusive mode. I'll give it a shot before pulling this card out though. Thanks for the advice. Kinda infuriating that these fancy new cards are having issues with relatively simple video playback. And it is even more infuriating that the issue pops up seemingly randomly.

Tell me about it.
So far I have counted at least 4 others here with stuttering on turing, as more adopt the card more will arise. Which will, since 10series is all pretty much wiped out except second hand or ridiculous prices

streaming is getting worse not better IMHO, companies use better logarithms to reduce bandwidth rather than increase quality, its depressing as bluray will be gone in the not too distant future so they'll be no uncompressed outlets and if they start pumping out stuff in 8k they'll never bother to fix the 4k and 1080p streams, they'll just remain sh!te as the average user doesnt care.
Thank god for MADVR which makes it just about watchable, its completely unwatchable otherwise.

To everyone having stuttering problems, especially those with RTX or GTX 16xx GPUs:
Try adding your player's exe file to the "Media Player Classic" or "Windows Media Player" profile with NvidiaProfileInspector (https://github.com/Orbmu2k/nvidiaProfileInspector/releases). This makes sure that the player knows that a video player is running.

These are helpful (I already had them, though), but the real problem is not *my* interest in DV. The real problem is that I can't do anything, as long as no splitter/decoder transports the DV information to me. So you're barking up the wrong tree here. You don't need to convince *me*. You need to convince a splitter/decoder dev. If you find one who's interested in implementing DV, I might look into it, too. But without an interested splitter/decoder dev, there's literally nothing I can do.
Let me try barking up that same tree from a different angle. :D
-> I would like to use madTPG with CalMAN to calibrate the DolbyVision mode on my TV (LG C8).
This shouldn't need any decoder/splitter support other than some collaboration with Spectracal.
Given the ridiculous price of the external signal generator boxes (which support both CalMAN and DolbyVision), I guess some us would even be willing put up a modest donation.
By the way, I personally prefer HDR10 for several different reasons, especially for videogames (since DV12 always uses 4:2:0 chroma sub-sampling, at least in it's current implementations while even HDMI 2.0 can handle 4:2:2 in 2160p60, let alone HDMI 2.1 which is on the corner). But I can't force the built-in Netflix app to ignore DV and fall back to HDR10 (while the Windows version which is limited to HDR10 has it's own unrelated issues) and most of the HDR capable games I played (or plan to play) looked much better with DolbyVision simply because the HDR10 mode is clearly implemented inproperly from a picture quality perspective (near-black shades look very similar in SDR and DV12 but look obviously too bright in HDR10 -> and no, this not a display issue, it's the game... try it for yourself with Mass Effect Andromeda. This doesn't happen with movies, only EA Frostbite games.)
Edit: Although... https://www.avsforum.com/forum/139-display-calibration/2962814-2018-lg-oled-calibration-user-settings-no-price-talk-76.html#post57995516
Hey, I just realized we probably don't even really need a DolbyVision capable signal generator to calibrate the DV picture modes of the 2018 LG TVs. Isn't it only required to validate the results?
I am not sure since I never saw the full DV process but if it's anything like the HDR10 calibration then it's all about calibrating the panel to D65 with gamma 2.2 while most of the HDR-related processing is temporarily deactivated. I guess we could even simply copy-paste the 1DLUT between HDR10 and DV modes. And I guess the DV related "parameter upload" is also based on the native gamut measurements, so there is nothing we really need from a DV signal generator.
Or is it already suppose to work now with madTPG (picking HDR10 mode but selecting the DV workflow) and I just overlooked it?

Same here. I'm currently testing with frames set to 1. Seeking on the file succcks now though. Only been able to test ~ 15 min of viewing, but it's okay thus far. Still debating putting my 1060 back in though.
Can any experts here speak to the advantages/disadvantages of using DXVA copy back and setting advance frames to 1?
el Filou
30th April 2019, 21:35
DXVA copy back has no practical disadvantages as long as your decode queue still fills up (older/slower systems can't keep up with it especially in UHD). It uses a bit more power and system resources as the decoded frames have to be transfered back to system RAM but it's negligible compared to the power needed for rendering.
Presenting only 1 frame in advance increases the possibility of having dropped frames. It all depends if your system and GPU is highly stressed or not.
tp4tissue
30th April 2019, 22:30
@ katodevin, put the 1060 into another computer, and use that to watch movies until 20xx gets more fixed.
w/ gpu decode, should only require ~dual core sandy bridge era
The only difference between 2060 and 1060 for now, would be 2060 can do slightly higher chroma ngu for 4KHDR, WHICH makes very little difference in the end result

Hmmm, I dont have issue seeking nor with dropped/repeated frames.
What specs are you running? I am running at 4500mhz (500 OC). 16GB of ram. Stock clocks on the GPU for video watching 2000mhz/15000vram(7500) for gaming. Preemptively speaking yes I have tried running stock everything to fix stutter, didnt make a difference, even tried underclocking.
Just to be clear Set frames in advance to 1 in Madvr not Nvidia CP, you can Nvidia CP and it will work but the audio will be 300ms off and require a -300 offset. And to be honest I have not tried D3D11, it could be fine too, I just say DXVA2CB just because it worked Ill try next time I watch something.

[QUOTE=tp4tissue;1873144]BEFORE Madvr graced us with 3Dlut support, the only way to get calibrated was to buy $500 lut-boxes.
You've convinced me , 2 weeks ago , I've bought the X-rite i1Display Pro :)

Planning to go for bigger OLED as well later this year (B965") , With the calibration , planning to start this weekend and also wanna dive into the MadVR Measurement thing, as well. (Have the latest beta and also a special version for ISO/BD folders, hopefully it also works on disc-burned MKV's)
Already amazed what MadVR does to 1080P and UHD files so far , took me quite a while to learn things from this thread and on AVR MadVR threads how to configure optimally. Had great help from Asmodian , Warner306, Huhn and ryryzn, very grateful for the great contributions on this thread. MadVR is pretty complicated , but great fun as well !

What I find weird is that I don't have many of the reported problems about studdering , banding and such and I am on WIN Insiders Fast Ring , plus I never do the DDUcleaner ... any other folks with a RTX2070 with similar behavior and chroma on NGU AA High, Image downscaling on SD 2 50%, image upscaling on NGU sharp > doubling High?
I think my settings are pretty high, no ? it renders usually at 25ms
I did OC my GPU with MSI afterburner, but no VOLT or MEM OC,need to redo this

One of my first thoughts was that older quad core cpus in combination with the newer rtx cards on madvr are not playing nice together, stutter. For example in games the cpu relays to the gpu and if the cpu cant do it fast enough you will get a bottleneck. I was thinking this because changing prerendered frames or frames presented in advance takes care of the stuttering for the most part for some people. There is a relationship there, although I do not know what it is.
Nvidia has pretty much locked overclocks. It is limited to power and thermals. The clocks are gonna do what they want no matter what you do in afterburner. You will get the fastest clocks at 50-59c then 60-69c and will get worse from there. Pretty ridiculous that it will throttle around 60c. I think Gamers Nexus has a pretty good explanation if you care to search it out. Basically keep it under 60c and the mem can go up to +1000 offset or so.
Since you guys are talking about CPUs... I have no issues with my stock-clocked 1st generation Core i7-920/X58 chipset combo (ca. 2008) :D Goes to show how very little the CPU matters.

Do the PC monitors first, once you understand certain setting behaviors and develop a workflow, then tackle the Oled.
Oled is slightly more complicated due to ABL.

You don't have to get that one.
You can get the cheaper Colormunki-display version.
It's the same thing with lower-certification.
The Cmunki Disp is firmware limited to read slightly more slowly, But that Doesn't matter or affect the accuracy much.
Either one works.
For calibrating TVs, the cmunki disp works just fine.
If you're enthusiastic about calibration, you Might consider the i1Dp, over the long run, it might save you some time, NOT much, but some.
The i1dp went on sale for ~$140 last black friday, and the lowest Cmunki-Disp on sale I've seen is ~$100
the i1d3 is notable faster which pretty important for 3D LUT creation.

I barely use my HTPC any more (spending hundreds on a GPU for slightly better image quality vs a £120 box that does everything is hard to justify) but that last GoT episode looked like absolute garbage on my OLED TV. Banding all over the blacks (which are everywhere to begin with). So I might try playing the episode from my HTPC rather than my Minix box to see if looks any better using Kodi + madVR.
Banding all over the blacks (which are everywhere to begin with).

this is one area low and mid LCD trounce OLEDs, horribly compressed content, sort of. Because all the blacks are just a grey mush you dont see any of the problems on GOT, this has been almost unwatchable on my OLED, much better with MADVR but it looks fine on my sammy MU8000, albeit grays instead of blacks.
with the proliferation of OLEDs I'm hoping MADSHI gets some time to look at the near black streaming artefacts as these are all kinds of horrific, much worse than a bit of banding in the sky or a slight loss of detail on a HDR image, this is by far the biggest problem PQ wise for all OLED owners and this is unlikely to get better, we really need some work in this area.

Did you try both passthrough HDR to display and tone map HDR using pixel shaders with output video in HDR format checked?
Those are your two best options for HDR with an LG OLED display. There is no magic.
If you are talking about chroma upscaling or dithering, try NGU Anti-Alias or NGU Sharp combined with Error Diffusion option 1 or 2.
That should give you the "best quality" HDR.
Also, set the GPU to RGB rather YCbCr. That will actually lower image quality on a PC.
