@huhn - please take a look.

EDIT::: IT works just as good with many other anime I have, but in general, the image is crisper and better if I am using upscaling refinement to upscale smaller images. That way, the distortions are almost in existent.

On the other hand, I think that the tradeoff with a bit of distortions still results in a better general image than without.

Yes, it's useful. I find AdaptiveSharpen to look more natural with anti-bloating 75% or 100%.

I agree, madshi informed us that Crispen Edges does something very similar to AdaptiveSharpen+Ani-Bloating 100%.
Also, Crispen Edges takes third the performance of AS+AB 100% on my system.

I actually think that there is no best.

There is what you like for what materials you watch.

I would seriously think twice before watching a FHD TV show with these settings. It could really look over-sharpened, and might be un-natural. On the other hand, there are very few anime that do not feel so much better when using ET + ES + 150AB + AR. But there are anime that are already too sharp. And for them, you must adjust, or deactivate.

I run a laptop with i7 - 4710HQ CPU + GTX860M GPU. IT is pretty low power, and it is able to run freely.

There are four things that cause frame drops for me:

1. Using image doubling for FHD videos

2. Using NNEDI over 16 neurons.

3. Using both image enhancement and upscaling refinement.

4. using image downscaling 2D.

If I do not use any of these settings, I get no frame drops regardless of video. I can watch smooth videos (60fps) without problems.

I have an issue with changing channels whilst watching live TV within Kodi DSPlayer. If I switch from one HD channel to another, frames start being played out of order (so everything looks like it's jumping around all over the place). If I switch from an HD channel to an SD one, I get a grey and/or green screen and have to restart Kodi.

Here's my specs and software versions on the problematic machine:


Kodi with DSPlayer 16.1 RC2 (latest)
MadVR 0.90.17 (latest)
Fullscreen Exclusive Mode disabled
MediaPortal PVR Client
Windows 10
Intel Xeon X5650 @ 4 GHz
AMD R9 270 (2 GB)

I've also tried using both ffmpeg and TSReader within the MediaPortal PVR Client settings, as well as turning "fast channel switching" on and off. These settings make no difference. Here's a summary of my MadVR rendering settings:


Direct3D 9 renderer
Use separate device for presentation
Use separate device for DXVA processing
Delay playback start until render queue is full
Windowed mode (present 8 frames in advance)
Smooth motion enabled

I've uploaded log files (http://dragonq.noip.me/files/pc/video/madvr/MadVR%20Channel%20Change%20Issue.7z) from when I started to watch one HD channel, then switched to another HD channel, then stopped playback. Hopefully it helps to identify the issue!

crispen edges is not identical to FineSharp. Some of those options make no sense for crispen edges. Some may, but I don't really see the sense of exposing all that. Which of those do you consider important and why?

"ldmp" because it's set too high in madVR and it forbids the enhancement of very small details. When set too low, the noise is sharpened too, but a noise remover can be used to avoid this. Also, we need a noise remover in madVR.

And "xstr" so I can define it to 0, because it sharpens the edges only (like unsharpHQ) and it's not a good thing for a high definition look (but it's good for a 3D effect look).

Yes, either 75% or 100%.

b) Do you consider the anti-bloating and anti-ringing options useful for SuperRes? I think anti-bloating might not be beneficial here, but I'd like to hear your opinion. Do you see any benefit in the anti-ringing option? SuperRes already didn't ring that much, so I wonder if the separate anti-ringing post processing option is worthwhile in your opinion or not?
I like the anti-bloating but don't see much either way in the anti-ringing.

c) Do you consider the "anti-bloating" filter useful for SSIM downscaling? If so, which strength settings do you like?
I don't really prefer them but it looks different enough to be useful. But I don't really care about downscaling anyway.

d) Which of the two anti-ringing options do you prefer for downscaling? (Edit: FYI, these options do *not* affect SSIM downscaling)
Again, not of much interest to me but in general and including here I'd take the option that's more different, so the strict (soft).

i have an hdtv that the resolution is 1366x768, but the tv has a 1080p mode(i believe this is for bluray players) on this mode the desktop turns a lot blurred because i believe the tv downscale the image to fit the screen but the resolution showed in madvr is 1080p...
i want some opinion... should i use this mode? the blu ray players use this mode on 1080p content...
is there any benefit using madvr to display 1080p and letting the tv downscale to fit? is strange because the tv osd shows 1080p24 but in manualsays that the maximum resolution is 1366x768p

I've been having occasional black screens for quite some time (going back through many versions of madVR). This is usually when I start to play, although I've had 2 in the past during playback. I can't say for sure that it is madVR, however. I'm using ZP, LAV, xySub, NO Reclock. I am using NNEDI3 for chroma, I may try to change that and see what happens.

I have the same problem for quite some time too. They are several black screen flashes during a movie. Changing the queue sizes doesn't fix the problem unfortunately. I've tried with the "present several frames in advance" setting ON and OFF too.

I can try to play with other settings if you have a possible solution.

That is a bad mode for madVR, madVR does a much better job downscaling than the TV. Always use the real native resolution with madVR.

Hi Neo-XP, can you try not using D3D11 for presentation. I was having issues with black screens too and using D3D9 for presentation solved the problem. What I did was resetting the values to default and then I put my settings again without touching default queues and frames presented in advance and not activating D3D11. Hope it helps.

As usual thank you Warner for clarifying this... The skipped frame seems to only be ever so often, I notice it more on the start of a movie logo that might be turning. The same ones don't skip on my old Kodi PC, so obviously its a setting that's not right on my new JRiver Madvr PC.

Can you tell me where I find that present cue in JRiver please, Ive never seen it? Mind you there are so many settings on JRiver its a bit overwhelming! I do have their Red October VideoClock ticked on. Im bitstreaming.
This is my build.
CPU: Intel Skylake Core i7 6700 3.4Ghz
Motherboard: Asus H170M-PLUS Intel H170
Memory: 16GB 2133MHz DDR4
Video: Asus STRIX GTX 970 DirectCU II Overclocked 4GB GDDR5

The present queue is part of the rendering stats (Cntrl + J). This will keep track of dropped frames and presentation glitches.

Having dropped frames at the beginning a movie can happen when playing 23.976 content with Kodi DSPlayer. But I think this is a defect of the player. It might be an issue with JRiver Media Center, as well.

"delay playback start until render queue is full" You don't have to turn this off. In fact, this may cause more dropped frames. But its worth a try.

This happens right after video transcoding a video is finished and I'm still watching video in Kodi via dsplayer. I don't know if other players are affected as well

I need to exit to FSE to bring back the picture then exit the player then play it again

No I think image doubling algorithms are more likely the cause of the ringing. ATM I'm getting around the ringing issue by using the softest kernel, NEDI.
I would agree that sometimes for 720p@1080p NEDI does the magic together with beefing up SSIM 2D's sharpness and SR@2(which doesn't ring AFAICS) :cool:

There are so many options everywhere that it takes more than a few days to get a good opinion of winning combos, many of them just boiling down to a videophool loophole with hardly discernible changes and you ending up scrutinizing PQ more than watching the darn movie hah, much like ppl who listen to top mastered music they don't even like just because SQ is great(color me guilty on that one, coz this thriller SACD yeehee ^^)

What is seen in test images seems exaggerated when watching real content. I have no problem seeing the difference between Lanczos, Jinc and super-xbr when watching actual content. But switching between them on a still frame, it can be hard to notice much of any change.

I would recommend spending an entire week watching content with settings that look good. Changing them, and then watching content for another week. With your eyes acclimatized to a certain look, you are more likely to notice the difference between different settings. This has been more fruitful than quickly switching back and forth between different algorithms to develop a preference.

Ive noticed if I set debanding to anything higher than low I get a lot of dropped frames. With both set to low I get 16 dropped frames after 9mins, is that ok?
Im now using 12 frames in advance and there are no skipped frames that are visible with the settings like this.
Remember Im playing my BDs at 60Hz due to my long sync issues I have with mixed content 50/60/24 on my RS600 projector.

Is this a plasma or an LCD? If LCD, I would use the native resolution of 1366x768... If it is a plasma, then your native resolution is more than likely 1024x768... As stated by another above, you should always use the native resolution of your TV. That is the actual dimensions of the physical pixels. In my case, I have a 42" Plasma that is "720p", but the actual pixel dimensions is 1024x768 (rectangular pixels).

I need your help explaining something. It has to do with the changes within MadVr with the new builds in regards to how they perform, with the same settings, going from an Windows 7 environment to Windows 10.

A friend of mine has an old Windows 7 machine, Core2Quad QX9770 @ 4000 and a GTX 980 @ 1520 MHz (nvidia 359.09 driver I believe) and a 1080p DLP projector. He uses the old MadVr 0.87.13 build with these settings :

- Deinterlacing : OFF
- artifact removal : low/low
- image enhancements : None
- chroma upscaling : NNEDI3 128
- image downscaling : Catmul-Rom, AR, LL
- image doubling : Allways, NNEDI3 64 on everything
- image upscaling : Jinc AR
- D3D9 Window mode
- dithering : Error Diffusion 1
- smooth motion off (Reclock)
- trade settings : all OFF

This works on all the content he views with zero frame skipping. Now, if I use the same MadVr settings (and version of MadVr) on my system I get dropped frames! I have a Windows 10 x64 PRO system with Intel Skylake 6600K @ 4500 and GTX 980Ti @ 1300 (tested with 355.98 and 364.51 drivers) and my 1080p Panasonic VT30. Why is that? Is Windows 10 that broken? nVidia drivers? I do have a more powerful system than he...so this makes no sense to me.

What seems to work so far with my system is the newest MadVr 0.90.17 with these settings :

- Deinterlacing : OFF
- artifact removal : medium/high
- image enhancements : None
- chroma upscaling : NNEDI3 256
- image downscaling : SSIM 2D100%, AR relaxed, LL
- image doubling : Allways, NNEDI3 64 on ONLY double and quad LUMA
- image upscaling : Jinc AR
- upscaling refinement : CE1, ED1, LS 0.65, AR
- D3D11 Fullscreen exclusive mode
- dithering : Error Diffusion 2
- smooth motion off (Reclock)
- trade settings : all OFF

This is the highest settings that work with 480p, 720p and 1080p content (I do not use profiles in MadVr yet). So what is stopping me? Do I expect too much out of my GTX 980Ti for MadVr? Since I just bought a Win10 lisence, and don't have a lisence for Win8.1, I can't go back. And Windows 7 updates for Intel Skylake will be gone by 2018...(Uhhh Microsoft!!).

Any help is highly appreciateted! :)

Please.. stop using NNEDI3 at such high values for chroma, It's such a waste of resources.
You won't even notice any difference between 16/32 neurons and 256.
Anyway super-xbr is a much better chroma scaler.

On the main topic of feedback:

Antibloat filter - very good! Personally i find 50% setting best for me.

Makes picture "foggy-ish" with superres+antibloat enabled, not sure why would anyone use it there.
I think most difference makes superxbr+antibloat in doubling.

Basically with my settings 720p anime became BR level on 1440p monitor - magic.
It's a bit more complicated with films, still looks better.

I also switched to Crispen edges 3.0 in IE, i find it much more usable now. I do not use settings that have antibloat in IE, something conflicts and makes picture weird.
Sorry can't explain better, 100% colorblind(meaning only black,white and billions of grey - seriously) so take all that with a grain of salt.

Please.. stop using NNEDI3 at such high values for chroma, It's such a waste of resources.
You won't even notice any difference between 16/32 neurons and 256.
Anyway super-xbr is a much better chroma scaler.

It isn't Chroma Upscaling settings that kills my performance, it is the image doubling settings in combination with downscaling. Like when MadVr upscales 720p video up to 1440p, then down again to 1080p - with NNEDI3.

Okay, but I simply didn't just go for the highest settings strait away. I like NNEDI3 more than super-xbr, so I want to use that.

What setting of super-xbr compares to NNEDI4 64 i terms of overall IQ in your opinion?

What setting of super-xbr compares to NNEDI4 64 i terms of overall IQ in your opinion?I don't think you can really compare them directly. Super-XBR tends to leave lines somewhat thicker and is fairly predictable - as a result some consider it best for things like anime and for chroma upscaling.

NNEDI3 can usually pull out a bit more detail and has a more subtle look, but it can also create an artificial (brushed) look, especially on things like landscapes. These errors tend to be more pronounced on the lower settings of NNEDI3. SuperRes tends to reduce the drawbacks of both approaches (though I personally feel that a strength of more than 2 sharpens too much).

If you really want to optimize your settings, you should spend some time looking at various types of content to see what kind of look you like best. NNEDI3 is very performance hungry at the higher settings, which is fine if you have room to spare, but I don't think it's worth bumping it up as high as it can go at the expense of other things (like the upscaling refinement filters).

Also remember that performance depends strongly on the resolution of the source. Your GPU is very powerful, but even it has limits if you intend to use things like image doubling on HD and (worse) UHD content. You can set up profiles for different resolutions and frame rates to optimize your settings across the board.

I use 1 madrv feature like this almost every day: toggling the Source Level (CTRL+SHIFT+ALT+i).

I was talking chroma upscaling specifically here. Everyone has their own tastes, personally I find NNEDI3 64 neurons a great cost effective luma scaler for most content.
There's no easy recommendation, double, sharpen, downscale.. so many possible combinations, you can be at this for awhile.

Hi Betroz. Those settings are way overkill for any GPU on earth :P. You can try using super-xbr 100 AR (SR 1 if you want too) for Chroma upscaling and I will not go past 64 neurons for luma doubling. Also you can try super-xbr AB 25 for luma doubling which is quite similar to NNEDI 64 neurons (it looks good but not as good as NNEDI3) but I think with the savings you will have in chroma upscaling using super-xbr you will be fine. Which algorithms are you using for image upscaling and downscaling? Are you using upscaling refinements too?

I did a quick test now with some 480p and 720p content with these settings :

- Deinterlacing : OFF
- artifact removal : medium/high
- image enhancements : None
- chroma upscaling : Super-xbr 100 AR, SR1
- image downscaling : SSIM 2D100%, AR relaxed, LL
- image doubling : Allways, NNEDI3 128 double and quad LUMA
- image upscaling : Jinc AR
- upscaling refinement : CE1, ED1, LS 0.65, AR
- D3D11 Fullscreen exclusive mode
- dithering : Error Diffusion 2
- smooth motion off (Reclock)
- trade settings : all OFF

No dropped frames so far (only tested 23 fps content), so I saved a lot by going for super-xbr for Chroma Upscaling :) With rendering time under 30ms for 480p content i tested. I may be able to tweak the upscaling refinements a bit more too.

After upgrading to 90.17 (from 90.15, I believe) and without changing any settings, render queues are suddenly struggling to fill up with some of my profiles.

Any ideas which new features might have become more taxing to the system compared to 90.15? I'd really prefer not having to go through all the profiles one by one again and try to guess what's different. FWIW, I'm not using any "gimmicks" besides doubling other than super-res x1.

EDIT: The only thing I can think of causing this is the tweaked upscaling/downscaling anti-ringing filters = much more performance hungry than before.

I obviously use the same madVR settings for both rip types - the ones that stutter with SS and the ones that do not.

- Any ideas why the above happens?
- Does madVR waste resources on rendering the black bars?
- Why do films that run at 23-24Hz are called 23-24p content? I mean whybis there a "p" there? 1080p "p" stands for Pixels AFAIK, which makes sense, but 23-24p "p" is there because..?

It happens to me with new builds once in a while. Make sure to remove all previous madVR files, including the settings file. That solved it for me, but Resetting Settings is another thing you can do.

Hmm, maybe I'll try that. I always uninstall before upgrading but I leave my settings file intact. Any tips on how to handily back up and reimport the settings other than copy-pasting the profile rules text?

Warner can you take a look at this for me please...
Ive noticed if I set debanding to anything higher than low I get a lot of dropped frames. With both set to low I get 16 dropped frames after 9mins, is that ok?
Im now using 12 frames in advance and there are no skipped frames that are visible with the settings like this.
Remember Im playing my BDs at 60Hz due to my long sync issues I have with mixed content 50/60/24 on my RS600 projector.

Are you bitstreaming?

To completely eliminate dropped frames, you would have to use PCM output and use VideoClock in JRiver. Clock jitter exists on almost every system. Most people won't notice one frame drop every three minutes or so. But it sounds like you may have another issue as I don't know why changing debanding settings leads to more or less dropped frames. I am assuming your rendering times are no higher than 35 ms.

If it is debanding causing the problem, madshi may have to comment. It would help to see your rendering stats.

If the dropped frames only happen when the movie starts, it is probably an issue with JRiver or a problem with madVR you can't control. Like I said, Kodi DSPlayer drops a bunch of frames at the start of a 23.976 fps video. After that, it's fine so I don't care all that much. It's not that noticeable.
