everything has bugs now, its the new normal and its annoying. it's because everything is too technical nowdays, there are all these complex systems and subsystems that need to be all talking to eachother in just the right way and its too hard to make sure it all jives together and doesnt do anything wrong. i had to change my worldview because of it, now i just look at everything that works for me as a bonus, otherwise id just be mad at how things have deteriorated. i am still mad when obvious bugs make it to release tho, where you can tell they didn't even bother testing basic use case scenarios, but the solution is still to stop caring so much about pc's and screens and focus more on just enjoying what you have.

good evening,
what is currently the best nvidia driver to use for madVR ?
with ms constantly forcing updates on win10, i now have bad stuttering and freezes in MPC-HC 64 bit using madVR in the last few weeks (since latest ms updates)
madVR v0.92.17
pc = win10 pro 64 bit (with whatever updates ms forces us to install),
i5 cpu with nvidia 3060 12 gb (driver dated 05/09/24 )

Somewhere around 22.10.2024 the MS update cribs hit me too and I will have a hard time rolling back those 233 force-updated OS files that came over me,
accompanied by an incurred nVidia Graphic vs. Intel Graphics (plus maybe worse Intel "System") driver incompatibility,
leading to countless DXGKRNL and other bluescreens since then.
A same-spec system starting with vanilla 22H2 (manually updated ~ Summer 2024 until end of september 2024) where I forbade any internet access is still fine.
You may want to go back there if you can, avoid the last MS Win10 22H2 October 2024 stampede.
OS version last good: 10.0.19045; the hit one: 10.0.19045
HAL: the last good: 10.0.19041.3570: the hit one: 10.0.19041.5072
nVidia: In my repos I find 561.09 as last good, 565.90 came in at my doomsday.
Mind you, this is for notebook.

Well, this is what sysinfo tells me.
The version numbers Build vs. HAL do differ within the same system if that is what make you wonder.
I was mentioning that to help with anyone's comparisons tracing any faults.
Digging into MS Win10 update history:
HAL updates are pushed more frequently than I thought, the build version number stays much longer.

When setting the crop flags for a video in MKVToolNix then playing the video in PotPlayer, it displays a thick vertical green line down the center with faint blue lines on either side. This only happens with MadVR (changing the video renderer to default makes the line go away) and only when setting the top crop parameter to something other than 0 (left, right, and bottom don't cause this). I've tested on two different videos with the same exact results. This is with the latest non-beta version of MadVR (0.92.17), PotPlayer v1.7.18958, Win10 x64 Version 22H2 (OS Build 19045.4894), Nvidia 1070 with fairly updated drivers.

Hey huhn, I'm trying out Windows 11 + madvr v113 + mpchc + lav. On AMD it seems HDR will only trigger if I turn on Exclusive Fullscreen. Is that a bug or does it only work this way?
On windows 10 1809, it will trigger and hold hdr. even in non fullscreen exclusive.
There's also a pause now for the picture to come in when video files are initially opened..

Sorry for bothering you all with a dumb question, but I changed my JVC PJ and now I have two level of calibration: SDR (Rec. 709) and HDR (BT. 2020); I created the relative profiles in madVR with a rule and works fine!
Is there a way to make the PJ automatically switch between the two calibrated profile by a madVR instruction?

HDR should work in windowed mode too, at least for me it does on win11 and 6900xt.
I noticed the pause/black screen before playback a few months ago, not sure why it happens or how to get rid of it.

Thanks, I already tried that but MPC-BE crashes after few second of watching the video, so I though I was missing something.
Even without it, the PJ recognizes that the color space received is bt 2020, but just remains on the SDR memory bank.

Ok, I sorted out and now it works: the only problem is that it doesn't switch back!
I mean, once it goes on the BT. 2020 memory bank it remains there even if the playback stops; it switches to the Rec. 709 memory bank playing SDR contents, but when they stops it goes back to BT. 2020.
Windows desktop and Kodi menus are SDR...

Hi All,
I am experiencing "presentation glitches" every second since updating my windows 11 to 24H2.
I have madvr matching the display framerate and video framerate. (23,975xxx or something)
I am running a 13900k with 4090RTX with MPC-HC with MADVR 0.9.17 with measure 207 update.
In NV Control panel I set MPC-HC profile to prefer maximum performance and Vsync ON.
All was running fine until after the update to win11 24H2.
Since the update I see all stats being stable when starting a video and going to fullscreen.
After a few seconds I see the "presentation glitch"-counter report one every second and letting the playback be stuttery.
It also seems the refreshrate shifts back to 23hz iso the normal 23,97x it normally has.
Furthermore I tried MPC-Video renderer as a substitute but there it starts rendering fine in fullscreen but after 10 mins the "present timer" increases to 40-50ms and introduces stutter.
The second I roll back to Win11 23H2 ALL ISSUES ARE GONE! and playback is stable as Always.
Does anyone have a (temporary) solution for this and is there any hope this will be fixed by either MSFT, NVIDIA or MADVR?
Setting the disable desktop redering setting in MadVR didn't help, Setting the "disable fullscreen optimization cpompatibility setting in .exe properties didn't help, and disabling Vsyc in NV Control panel didn't help.
Disabling HAGS also doesnt provide consistent results, it does seem a bit more stable but also is not able to play a full 1,5hr movie without stutters.
And disabing HAGS will be a miserable bother as I play alot of games with FG on (which requires HAGS).

Im thinking of getting a new GPU. I use the Samsung Q90R 4K TV 2019. I want to use very high settings with Processing and Upscaling in MadVR. Very high setting on every front. I was thinking of getting the RTX 4070 Super or should I wait for the RTX 5070 Ti? What RTX GPU should I get? Does MadVR want high VRAM?
Asmodian
17th December 2024, 18:12
There is very high on every front and then there is 8K doubling to 16K with NGU very high with all pre and post processing enabled.
How reasonable are you being with "very high setting on every front". A 4070 Super would be a great card for madVR, very high on everything that is even slightly reasonable, overkill even. It won't do very high on absolutly everything at once though (but that would be worse quality even if it could).
With today's GPU memory sizes, no madVR does not use significant VRAM.

I'm with 4070 ti, and on very high upscaling to 4k, it does really well around ~ 12 ms. Even with some additional settings: dithering, smooth motion and etc. The difference between high and very high can be seen, not by everyone, but I can see it.

Your player should have a setting to change for this

Although I have yet to use this change on SDR subs since I did it, so I am not sure if it is too dark now for SDR....

Depends on how much of a nitpick you are, for me, both generally work, but nowhere as smooth as streaming apps on the TV.
It also happens that either of the two doesn't play a file properly or at all, but it's quite rare.

You don't need to have your subtitles at #FFFFFF/RGB 255 255 255 pure white. Change it in the player settings to a tonality that is comfortable for you (more gray).

I got an OLED and I watch a lot of 4:3 with black borders down the sides and I am worried about burn in over the next 5 years of watching 4:3 stuff.
Is it possible with madvr to do something with the borders like colour them grey instead of black?
Is there an alternative media player that has options for this?
Currently using MPC-HC and it has loadable shaders so I was thinking maybe a third party shader could be used to do that, maybe even something fancy like drawing a fake frosted glass reflection down the sides like the megabezel shader for retroarch

I really wouldn't worry about that at all, I have the first gen 4K LG Oled from 2015 and I use it anything from 4 to 8 hours a day and it's still in perfect condition with no issues at all with burnin, I can't speak for the brightness as it must have lost some but to me it seems like very little as it's still very bright (Was only about 450 nits to start with) as I watch most of my content in dim or no light anyway. I've only kept it this long because it's absolutely incredible with 3D MVC rips.

Hi All,
I am experiencing "presentation glitches" every second since updating my windows 11 to 24H2.
Could it be due to this (https://www.ghacks.net/2024/12/19/microsoft-confirms-auto-hdr-bug-in-windows-11-and-blocks-updates-as-a-consequence/) issue?

In the meantime I found Outer Lighting (https://www.svp-team.com/wiki/Manual:Outer_lighting) and Frosty Borders (https://forum.videohelp.com/threads/393762-ImageBorders-FrostyBorders-Scripts) which are compatible with MPC-HC.
I will probably use FrostyBorders cause I already use avisynth to IVTC my 4:3 stuff in realtime so all i would have to do is add 1 line of avisynth code to all my scripts

Can confirm Hardware Accelerated GPU Scheduling, or HAGS, causes playback issues, at least on W11 24H2 when using an RTX 2080 and i7 9700k. It caused judder (manifested as presentation glitches in the OSD) no matter what other settings I tried in madvr, mpc and windows. It's quite annoying for anyone who uses their PC for gaming as well since toggling requires restart. Also i noticed a decrease in rendering performance in the OSD with HAGS turned off, an average of about 5-10%. Is there any chance this will be patched one day or is the dev completely focused on madvr envy nowadays?

Why is madVR always enabling HDR (if we play a 4K video with it) when reinstalled, and when you want to find the option to disable it, is nowhere to be found? I deleted the K-Lite codec pack, so MPC-HC was gone. Reinstalled, and now I am facing this problem.
https://www.reddit.com/r/htpc/comments/joz9kr/mpchcmadvr_automatically_activates_hdr_on_my/
Found this thread, but the option is nowhere to be found (note: my LCD is the Acer XV280K-B).
If there's someone in charge of madVR here, please modify this thing so HDR is permanently disabled if such 4K videos are played, unless we explicitly tell madVR to do it. HDR was disabled in Windows 11, and still whenever such videos are played, my entire screen (from this 4K monitor) turns into gray. The sad thing is that I was able to disable this in the past, but forgot how to do it. Perhaps this monitor does not add a profile (?) in madVR, so that option mentioned by reddit isn't here. Another reason to force users to manually enable this and not force by default.
P.S. madVR was uninstalled, then reinstalled, too, and MPC-HC was brought back from here: https://www.videohelp.com/software/Media-Player-Classic-Home-Cinema
Update:
After playing a few videos, oddly this appeared:
https://i.postimg.cc/WskQtcsQ/HDR.jpg
LET MADVR DECIDE was what caused this issue.

No, it did not suddenly appear, those options have been there forever.
To fix the device duplication and HDR detection issues you need to use a newer beta version of Madvr. That has slightly better compatibility with Windows 11.

found a strange issue with 24 playback in madvr (not 23,976). If I play a 720p 24p video it plays fine and I get no frame slips, it correctly shows its upscalled to 2160p but if I play a 1080p video or higher it wont upscale to 2160p and my TV changes to 1080p mode and I get a frame drop every 40 seconds.
I tracked this down to my modes which I had set as:
2160p23, 2160p24, 2160p25, 2160p50, 2160p60, 1080p23
I had 1080p23 on there as ages ago I wasnt able to trigger 3D MVC mode without it, If I remove it the problem goes away, I could understand if I had 1080p24 In my modes I can see how that would cause it but not 1080p23 this should not cause this problem but it does.
As it turns out I dont need 1080p23 anymore as 3D works ok now So I have removed it permanently, its just a really odd MADVR bug Or is this somehow expected behaviour?
Here is 1080P version of the video

Is there some kind of incompatibility between DV and D3D11 processing, as using it resorts to shaders with Chroma scaling when I've relegated this to D3D in the options? HLG/PQ sticks with DirectX. Also, with the same video OSD shows brightness jumping from 1000 to a whopping 4000 nits when choosing DV over HLG/PQ, which sounds quite insane.

That isn't what is happening though, I did not have both 2160p24 and 1080p24 Modes added, I only had 2160p24 and 1080p23, So by that measure it should have upscaled the 1080p video to 2160P and played it correctly as 2160p24, Not only did it not upscale it, it played it at 1080p23 and dropped frames.

yes 1080p23 and 1080p24 is not big enough of a difference for madVR to consider that.
in general you shouldn't add anything that is not the native resolution.
