I am not sure if this is MPC-HC or madVR issue and as such I am asking in both threads.
MPC-HC keep trying to use network connection for video files when madVR is used as external filter. Why? Local Network in madVR tray is disabled. I don't use any MPC-HC plugins that require local or public network use. MPC-HC requests network access only when I launch video files to rendered with madVR, but never when I launch audio files, regardless of renderer. If I launch video files when madVR is not default preferred external renderer, then there are no attempts to use local network.
My PC is highly isolated and doesn't even have local network sharing capabilities, only WAN access over VPN. On top of that I disable private and public network use of MPC-HC executable with basic Windows firewall, but such blocking causes a delay when I launch MPC-HC because MPC-HC attempts to use network when madVR is the set primary external video renderer. If I just disconnect PC from LAN, then there is no delay.
Is there a way to fully disable network functionality of MPC-HC and madVR through their options? Again, network access requests only happen if I tr yto launch video files in MPC-HC when madVR is the default prefered renderer.
I am also observing attempts to connect to the internet every time a video is played. MPC-HC tries to connect, but only when madVR is selected as video renderer.
Not local network discovery but internet connections.
There is an old thread here (https://github.com/clsid2/mpc-hc/issues/385), with similar symptoms observed.
I find that highly unusual and not wanted. What setting or otherwise is making these connections and how can i turn it off?

Hi, anyone still using amd 5000 series GPU running up to date windows 10 / MADVR who can still get 3D MVC to work, cant get 3D to trigger for the life of me, all the usual prerequisites are in place, movie starts, TV goes into 3D mode but movie plays in 2d, cant work it out.

seems to be an issue with full screen mode, using MPC-HC, if I double click on the movie to come out of full screen mode 3D MVC triggers, but dies again when I go back into full screen mode, any ideas anyone? - windows 10 22h2

so after playing around with driver versions, MADVR versions, LAV filers etc etc nothing work but I played one video and accidentally triggered my on screen keyboard which came up over the top of the movie, bizarrely this fixes it, if I leave OSK on the screen and drag it down to the bottow so I can only see a small corner of it the movie plays fine, this is utterly bizarre, unless someone knows something I dont about 22H2 issues?

further investigations reveal that MADVR is part of the problem as 3D works correctly with potplayer without using the MADVR renderer, i'm guessing not many people use 3D MVC anymore sadly so I may be stuck with this issue, i'd try win 11 if anyone can confirm its working for them

Right click the toolbar disable lan access?
It was already disabled (it reads "Enable LAN access").
And this is not it as when i enable it, madhcctrl.exe is making the broadcast connections to LAN. And mpc-hc64.exe is still trying to make connections even then to internet.
madVR bug reports call home.
How can i disable them if they are the culprit? And why would they be triggered for every video played?

It says on the first post in this thread:
"firewall complaints:
madVR tries to automatically find other PCs in your local network which are also running madVR. If any such PCs are found, you can remotely switch audio and subtitle tracks, jump to specific chapters, etc etc. For this network functionality to work, madVR tries to access the local network, obviously. So if your firewall complains, you know why. If you don't ever plan to use madVR's network functionality, you can safely tell your firewall to block any and all madVR network accesses. Please rest assured, though, that madVR does not upload your private data to a server or anything of that sort. So allowing madVR to access the LAN should not result in any privacy or security problems."

I accept that explanation for the local network.
As i elaborated above, that is done by madhcctrl.exe, and indeed it tries to send udp packets to LAN brodcast address, and i dont mind that at all. LAN meaning 192.168.0.255 or the likes (there is a packet for one internet IP, but lets ignore that for now). That is intranet IP, not internet IP. And this behavior can be turned on/off by right clicking tray icon and disabling LAN access. Then madhcctrl.exe does not send anything anywhere, as is expected.
But what i am trying to convey is that mpc-hc64.exe tries to connect to internet IPs, port 80 at the same time. Even when i disable "LAN access" in madVR, mpc-hc64.exe still tries to connect to the internet (not intranet) for every new video file i play. That is what i am trying to disable (as well).
For comparison if i select internal filter in MPC-HC (lets say default "Enahnced Video Renderer (custom presenter)"), MPC-HC does not try to connect anywhere, as expected.

my win 11 system is perfectly dry. so could be the madVR version.

1e100.net is a Google-owned domain name. Curious. Seems to be used for captive portal detection to see if there is internet present.
On Win 10 for me, I don't have any activity on resource monitor or connections to this with HC and madvr .92.17 in use.

u can use DNSLookupView to see what is making the connection,
i tried myself (windows10) and it did not connect anywhere nor did it receive anything.
only windows tried to hijack MPCHC to look for updates which did not connect. (i update my windows manually each month)

otherwise there was no single connection made.
edit:
tried with madvr and with mpc video renderer.
without madvr teh Player did no connection at all
with madvr it did. (but only listening) i think im also blocking it via firewall so it might be diff. for you.

Hi, hope I'm not mixing up by posting in different threads. I just considered switching from MPC-HC's default renderer to MadVR, noticed this thread. I hear it's good. So I'm guessing this thread is better for asking about switching to and settings for MadVR, rather than the player's thread?
So, I guess I should switch to MadVR for higher quality video? And it will keep all my MPC settings like custom subtitle defaults and stuff like that? Anything I should know about switching to MadVR, any settings I need to check etc? Just using it for usual video files, old movies, anime, via Windows 10.
Also a shorter question, what's the best resizer/upscaling option, and how did it come to be known as the best? As far as most authentic looking.
I see Lanczos is the default in MadVR included with latest k-lite codec pack in MPC-HC. I've been using bilinear in default renderer all these years. Just looking at MadVR setting snow, the green and red bars showing different strengths of each setting is a nice touch, lot of info to look into.
edit:
Been looking at a lot of old posts and guides etc, doing some homework. Still a lot of info to take in for sure. For my purposes I'm thinking since I haven't minded bilinear and the less fancy stuff so far, and I don't even have a 4K TV yet, I might as well stick to a less fancy/less sharpness focused one. So I wonder what the downside of some of these less popular choices are, for scaling? Would just about any of them be an upgrade compared to Bilinear? Say Bicubic 60, even SoftCubic60, Jinc, etc?
When I see the settings bars show a lower addition of ringing, I figure since I'm already used to the aliasing of bilinear maybe that's a better fit for my taste. Not sure if the filter for ringing has any downsides, but I guess a less processed image is even better for me. Within reason and with pleasing quality of course, subject to taste.
Is there any reason not to pick some of these? Or pretty much, what would be a good pick for older sources, 480 anime, etc? I've read some posts on it, many from years ago, not sure if there are downsides I'd miss. I saw a post from 10 years ago saying Mitchell-Netravali chroma upscaling is great and goes with anything. Is that still the case for example? How about Bicubic60 chroma upscaling? Any of the options lower on ringing etc. And can you really mix and match any chroma upscaling with any image upscaling?
Also, I notice with my testing with ctrl + J stats, it always says "chroma > DXVA", no matter which chroma upscaling I pick. It does say the different image upscaling though under "image". Is it supposed to always say DXVA for chroma, and it'll still be using the different chroma upscaling I'm picking?
I also get the 1 frame repeat every 41.77 seconds thing, I've read some old posts about that. My refresh rate is 60hz, playing a 23.976 fps file. I assume that's fine? I also read somebody suggest on another site that this repeated frame every 41 seconds would still happen in the default MPC video renderer too, so that's always been a thing for me and I didn't notice I guess?
I'll say the only annoying thing in my tinkering is I do seem to get a decent amount of presentation glitches. But it usually settles down after I start a file or if I haven't seeked in it for a bit. I wonder if similar stuff happened in the default renderer with bilinear etc, and ignorance is bliss? Though I do also get a few dropped frames, where as I had 0 on the default renderer. But it's mostly when starting the video, then once in a while. I guess it might be worth it for the higher quality, since I don't even notice the dropped frames. On a recent HP gaming desktop.
Anyways, it is wild to me that this has all been around for over 10 years, and I'm just getting around to trying to figure it out.

It would be nice if there was an internal way (with HEX Editor maybe?) to disable madVR LAN access because when firewall blocks it, there is a delay. In other words:
MPC-HC + madVR + unplugged Ethernet cable = content playbacks begins promptly
MPC-HC + madVR + plugged Ethernet cable + firewall blocking madVR = content playback starts after a short delay
I am running into another issue of having to pause playback when turning off my OLED display every 4 hours to perform pixel refresh and after turning my display back on again, playback does not resume. I just get a black screen and have to exit MPC-HC to restart playback again...
Now that VLC supports NVidia's Super Resolution, does madVR plan on doing the same or is development of it pretty much dead?

You can prevent local lan access by disabling the tray icon.
You can press Ctrl+E to quickly reload a file in MPC-HC.
madVR development is dead right now.
Super Resolution is pretty crap anyway. But if you are stubborn, it is available in MPC-HC through MPC Video Renderer.

Does MadVR accept auto select profile rules related to MaxCLL and MaxFALL? Example: I would like a set profile triggered when MaxCLL/MaxFALL= 4000/1000. If so, can someone write me a command for this example? Thanks in advance.

According to tips.txt there is not such a thing. The only random possibility I can think of is that maybe the latest beta version has some new undocumented profile properties like srcMaxFALL or something, but this is pure speculation.
Of course you can just tag the file or parent folder with [profile='my 1000nit profile'] but I presume you are trying to avoid such manual intervention.
I think you might be able to finagle something in a convoluted way by tagging your top level folder containing all your HDR files with something like [profile='run my custom command'] and then in MadVR set 'run my custom command' profile to 'command line to execute when this profile is activated' which points to a script (eg. Windows batch file, Autohotkey script etc.) which runs MediaInfo at the command line to get the MaxFALL and then renames the filename tag to eg. [profile='my 1000nit profile'] depending on what MediaInfo reported.
But, I think this would require reloading the media file so that MadVR will read the new tag since the file will already be opened by the time MadVR runs the custom command. I think Kodi allows running a custom command before opening the file, but then presumably Kodi will proceed to open the filename before it was renamed.
If I was tasked with solving the issue on my system, I would probably just write an Autohotkey script that I double click which would recurse through all files in a top level folder, getting MediaInfo and tagging any untagged files with the respective [profile='my 1000nit/4000nit profile']. It's still manual intervention, but I'd only have to do it once when adding new HDR videos to the library, and at that point I'm already manually intervening to push files around.
Another possibility is to use MadVR's keyboard shortcut to activate/deactivate the 1000/4000nit profile, if you can tell by eyeballing it which one looks correct. But again this is manual intervention which I'm guessing you are trying to avoid.

I really should write the little app I've been planning on writing.
I was just going to make an app that watches your media player for loading a new file, and leverages ffmpeg to query the file for various information and then allow defining actions to take based on the media file.
Actions could be like activating madVR profiles, or changing sound or video settings in your AVR or display. Main thing that spawned the idea for the program was going to be to detect the actual AR of the video and allow sending IP commands to projector to select a lens memory automatically.

i've been using tone map to SDR for a while and not outputting in HDR mode, I pop it on sometimes to see if anything has changed with MADVR versions and stuff, I'm having major issues with HDR now, looks like a windows issues though. When I output in HDR mode the picture and colour sat look fine but the brightness is way way down, about half that or less without windows HDR mode turned on. I though at first it might be the TV profile but I used the same one with my firestick and played a HDR movies and it looks fine.
I thought it might be an issue with the SDR/HDR slider in windows but changing that does nothing, when I put windows in HDR mode everything dims down and I cant work out why, tried all the usual things, different drivers etc, just cant understand whats going on with my PC at the moment, 3D is also broken in MADVR, rebuilding would be a massive pain though, anyone any suggestions (not a MADVR issue as such)

Couple that with the fact that MADSHI still using AVSforum, although not this thread.

Hi all, I have been using madVR for years, with various GFX cards, with the last one being an RTX 3080. I got my hands on a 4090 from MSI recently and notice from time to time, madVRs HDR pass through isn't working to my LG C1 (the HDR logo appears on the TV but the image is washed out).
If I restart the driver using the restart executable that comes with cru, it usually kicks in fine then. It seems quite random when it works / doesn't work though. I saw some other old threads on it but thought to ask here as I can't find anything that permanently resolves it or where the problem lies, madVR, nvidia drivers, the TV, some combination of them all. I tried setting madVR to use FSE but it didn't get around the issue. Only a reboot or driver restart fixes it. Any pointers would be much appreciated.

I tried both the latest beta and the latest official build, but I don't use the tonemapping logic in there, I send the metadata directly to the TV to let it handle it. Maybe using madVRs own tonemapping might be the way to go actually as a workaround. I'd love to get it working though with the simple tickbox to send the metadata to the TV and have it pick it up.

Indeed, i have a RTX 3060 and LG OLED G1 and used to have for years frequent TV HDR mode not switching off issue after video stop, resulting in washed out or saturated color. The issue happened depending on which nvidia driver i am using.
MadVR was in HDR passthrough mode as I thought it was the best choice for quality to let TV do the tone mapping (with same logic as using audio bitstreaming passthrough to let AV receiver decode Dolby tracks). Seems I was wrong, madvr beta hdr pixel shaders tone map is better.
Then, I tried madvr beta version 166 with hdr tone mapping mode using pixel shaders, et voilą : no more TV HDR mode switching on or off issue on video start and stop since. With the cherry on top : still works even if i installed the latest nvidia driver.
Here are my madvr beta 166 hdr tone mapping settings. I am no expert, I replicated the settings from other people posts.
Important settings to fit my LG OLED G1 are the peak luminance (780 nits) and check box 'output video in hdr format' enabled.

Hi guys, got a madVR HDR problem on my 85" HDR TV (Display 2) which I hope you could shed some light on please... Windows 10 with HDR off (letting madVR do the passthrough). Using the newest mVR Measure with an Nvidia 3080 with most recent drivers.
When I use the 85" HDR TV as the only display (Show only on 2) or it's the only one plugged into my graphics card via HDMI madVR's HDR "Let madVR decide" or "Passthrough HDR to display" works great using Zoom Player and/or PotPlayer. The TV display flashes when the vid starts going into HDR Mode and the colors are vibrant and great.
But when I extend the 85" HDR TV to be either the secondary display or the main display and then drag the media player over to it (Zoom or Pot) and then start to play the same HDR vid, the TV flashes going into HDR mode as before but instead of the colors being vibrant and great as HDR should they are greyish and bleak. I selected between mVR's "Let madVR decide" or "Passthrough HDR to display" and the greys are the same.
So ummm, same HDR TV display, same video, same mVR, same everything, the only difference is that I am extending the 85" HDR TV to be either the Primary Display or Display 2 instead of being the only Display used. Could this be a madVR bug not recognizing that that same display that you just showed beautiful colors on is now just extended and you can still show those great colors? I am at a loss.
The only way I can use the 85" TV with HDR right now in extend mode is to turn Windows10 HDR on. Any thoughts greatly appreciated :-)

Anyone using AMD Ryzen 4600g / 5600g or i3 12100 UHD or similar ?
Do you have any trouble setting up madvr ?
I am building a new PC and I have trouble picking the CPU :
1. i3 12100 (UHD 730) ~ 100 USD
2. Ryzen 5600g (Radeon Graphics 7) ~ 120 USD
Will it be safer for me to buy a entry level card like Nvidia GT1030 too ?
Like this
3. i3 12100F (no UHD) + GT1030 2G ~ 170 USD
my main usage :
1080p30 or 1080p60 SDR video
just try the igpu first if it isn't good enough for what you need you could easily add a real GPU.
you should also not just look at the price of the cpu amd boards are usually cheaper for am4.
the 5600g obliterates the 1030

If I want to add more sharpening, I prefer to just use ReShade with MPC player which works just fine, and then you can use CAS (contrast adaptive sharpening) on top of (after) the NGU output.

Yeah it's a 60 fps monitor. I did that because I'm trying to get a 24 fps movie to play at 24 fps in MadVR instead of 60. How do i do that?
if your device can't do it well you don't. and madVR is also not changing the frame rate of a movie you just get 3:2 judder because that's what happens when you play 24 at 60.
you should also not add anything beside the native resolution to the display modes.
madVR smooth motion is made for that but first what display are you even using 120 HZ is very common these days and some may do 48.

While not "ideal", what I do on my system is that I use the 1080p mode and then upscale using the monitor's panel setting. (My display is 2048x1152.)
So this is what my string looks like: 1080p23, 1080p24, 1080p25, 1080p29, 1080p30, 1080p50, 1080p59, 1080p60
I can get most of these at 1152 using the graphic drivers by setting custom resolutions, but NOT 23.976 at native (thanks Intel!). I might be able to do if I use CRU and spend a lot of time on it, but that's not a sure thing.
So, it was just easier for me to just use the 1080p23 that it already supports natively.. it says repeat time for 23.976 is on the order of days with this so..
If I add in 2048 resolutions into the string, madvr will just jump to it and use whichever is closest, e.g. 60 hz.. unfortunately it doesn't read from left to right, so it's not possible for example to have 1080p23 and then 2048x1152p24.
JordanKietsu: If you want 24.000 Hz, just define a custom resolution in your graphic drivers and it'll work.

if your device can't do it well you don't. and madVR is also not changing the frame rate of a movie you just get 3:2 judder because that's what happens when you play 24 at 60.
you should also not add anything beside the native resolution to the display modes.

It's a 4k 60hz monitor from LG. Other renderers play at the video's native fps so why can't madvr?

On a PC monitor I'd say you might as well run 120hz as its evenly divisible by 24, 30 & 60.
Of course 25 & 50 still looks a bit stuttery at 120hz if you watch PAL stuff (I do... mostly DVD's, so I've got 1080p50 in my MadVR strings).
Most TV's from the last 10 years support 24hz mode & usually the TV's video processor would just multiply it to 96hz, 120hz or 240hz internally to suit the panel technology so it's not really any different to just using 120hz in the first place.
The ideal would be a 300hz mode then you'd never have to change modes - BUT NO you still would need to occasionally change it cause of the annoying n/1.001 issue. (edit: and the bandwidth requirments of a 4k300 signal would be bonkers).
@JordanKietsu if you want 24 to play smooth at 41ms interval between rendered frames your display needs to support a mode that is evenly divisible by 24hz, like typically 24hz or 120hz then just put that mode in MadVRs display mode strings. MadVR can only set a display mode that the Windows API says is supported by your hardware, so if your display isn't changing away from 60hz when playing 24fps file then it probably failed to set the mode. Is there a 24hz or 120hz mode in your GPU control panel or Windows display modes list?
