No, that's absolutely NOT true. The option is the dynamic range. Madshi suggests that should be set to limited 16-whatever it is due to BTB and WTW. The pixel format should be RGB full 0-255.

Maybe somebody can confirm if madVR gamma processing ( Im using the 2.0 setting, not 2.2 ), does process the whole image or only the picture without the the black belts in 2.35 aspect ratio movies? Im just starting to setup my Panasonic VT30 plasma and I like how madVR is uncovering further details in the picture. VT30 is calibrated to 2.2. Setting madVR gamma to 2.2 and VT30s gamma processing to 2.0 makes the picture more detailed, but the black belts get more grey, which is probably not ok.

It was actually from highdefjunkies.com forum for the Sharp Elite thread. The poster has taken a closer look and quickly cleared the air. We're all on the same page so I don't think there will be any misinformation this time unless people take excerpts without reading followups (guess that happens a lot too).
Anyways... I guess this just means I'll have to rely on MadVR to provide the proper colorspace since the incredibly expensive Elite doesn't appear to accept RGB 0-255... hard to believe.

That's a shame. But madVR does awesome colorspace conversions, so, if that's what you need, it'll do it nicely.

I am using LAV filters + madVR + ReClock. I get 0 dropped frames, 0 delayed frames and no presentation glitches. madVR OSD reports 1 frame repeat/drop every 1.05 days or so. Even though the stats look so perfect, I feel the playback is not very smooth, especially when I play 23.976 fps and 25 fps videos. I have two displays: a monitor and an HDTV. Both have a native refresh rate of 60 Hz. I have forced a custom resolution of 72 Hz on my monitor and 48 Hz on my TV, for 23.976 fps videos and also for 25 fps videos (by speeding them down using ReClock). I don't understand why I am not getting supersmooth playback.
Is there anything which I need to adjust in the 3D settings of nvidia control panel? I have a GTX 260, by the way. I have set antialiasing and anisotropic filtering to application-controlled, antialiasing transparency Off, max pre-rendered frames to default 3 (though 0 looks better to me in games), and texture filtering to high quality.
There is one thing which I have noticed. ReClock and madVR OSD report a display refresh rate, for all custom resolutions in both the displays, which is not very exact. For example, when I run my monitor at 60 Hz native refresh rate, it is reported as 60.019 Hz. Likewise, 72 Hz is reported as 72.023 Hz. I wonder if there is a way to make them more accurate (upto two decimal places).
I have one specific issue with VC1 files and some m2ts files. Without ReClock, they run perfect with no frame drops (though CPU usage is high). With ReClock, there are a lot of dropped frames and the video is just not watchable.
I am new to this forum and it's really a long thread. I am slowly catching up. :)

Deinterlacing Issue with Non-Square Pixel Material on Intel IGP3000? I was testing using LAV Video and madVR over a range of test files using a i7-2600K with HD3000 IGP to see how it would go. It went really well for most content (including up to AVC 1080/50i material). I did find an issue however with lots of dropped frames but only if the source material had non-square pixels (eg 1440x1080, or Anamorphic 720x576i). At first I thought it was only MPEG-2 but it is also DV-AVI. So a 4:3 720x576i is fine, but a 16:9 720x576i is not.
Queues look like this:
Decoder 26-28/28
Upload 12-15/24
Deinterlace 1-5/24
Render 1-3/24
Backbuffer 0-2/8
Things I tried:
* If I check "perform deinterlacing in seperate thread" then the Deinterlace queue goes to 21-24/24, but Render 1-3/24, and Backbuffer 0-1/8
* Exclusive mode makes no difference
* If I deinterlace in LAV Video (eg YADIF) then the issue goes away
* If I use a different GPU (eg nVidia 550Ti) then the issue goes away
If I change the default of Luma Upscaling from Lanczos to something like SoftCubic then the Intel IGP HD3000 has no issues and the queues are fine. Looks like the extra work on non-square pixels is just too much for this IGP with Lanczos

Just curious, I know the Video settings in ATI's CCC have an effect when madVR is deinterlacing, but is this still the case if madVR doesn't receive the interlace flag from the decoder?

Yes, but thats blu-ray content, where the original picture indeed already contains the black bars. madVR processes the whole image, and in that case the black bars will also be part of the processing chain.
A MKV 960x408 for instance, is a different story. Assuming you have a 1920x1080 display, i think this is what happens with that particular MKV: I think madVR resizes the the MKV to 1920x816, and applies the 1920x816 image to a 1920x1080 canvas and then adds subtitles.
So the answer to the question would then be that madVR 'does it's thing' before the 2,35 black bars are there.

Afaik madVR does color processing before the black bars are added. Or was it EVR? Damn, now I don't remember. Best test it yourself with a silly .3dlut that changes everything to red.

I had the same issue with a 9500GT and an X300M and tried reclock as well. Have you tried lowering the queues and backbuffer?
My short 2 week experience with madvr is the auto queue doesn't work at all on the X300M, black screen and 100% cpu usage, freezes the computer for a few seconds. Setting it to 4 allows SD to be played with Lanczos3 but HD has many frame drops with all resizers.
With the 9500GT autoset queues of 12/8 allows SD but there's a lot of drops with HD. After setting queues to 4/4, HD plays with 0 frame drops/delays according to madvr but occasionally there was what appeared to be frame drops with SD and HD. Adjusting the back buffers to 1 fixed this problem. This is with Lanczos8.
It would be nice if in a later version the queues could be set lower in hopes that HD plays on an X300M with MadVR. Also more lanczos taps options would be nice, like 6 and would there be any advantage to more than 8 taps?

Yes, auto queue doesn't work for me either. Nor do lowering the queues and backbuffer help. I have played with the settings and found that these work best for me:
fullscreen exclusive mode [ticked]
use a separate device for presentation [ticked]
use D3D11 for presentation [unticked]
CPU queue size: 24
GPU queue size: 12
windowed mode settings: 8 backbuffers, flush, flush, flush, flush
exclusive mode settings: here I use Nevcairiel's settings -> present several frames in advance [ticked], 12, don't flush, flush, flush, flush & wait (sleep), run presentation in a separate thread [unticked].. in my setup, I have to tick the last two options for glitch free playback
However, even after trying many different combinations of settings, I can't get rid of those issues which I mentioned.
Also more lanczos taps options would be nice, like 6 and would there be any advantage to more than 8 taps?
I use SoftCubic 100 for chroma and Lanczos 4 taps for luma up/downsampling. When you go beyond 4 taps in Lanczos, there is a little increase in sharpness at the expense of too much increase in ringing. So there are more disadvantages than advantages with Lanczos 4+ taps.

I was just testing sending an RGB32 signal from ffdShow (instead of YV12 or NV12) and for some reason only the top half of the screen is rendered. What could be causing this?
I did all of the pertinent testing I could think of. It works fine using EVR as the Renderer, so it is most likely an issue with Madvr.
The only scenario that works correctly is when I am playing 1080P source material (i.e. something that does not need to be resized on my 1080P TV.) However, everything else, from MPEG2(DVD) to XVid, even to h264 720 HD material all have the bottom half of the screen chopped-off when feeding it an RGB signal.
I tried multiple configuration options in madVR, such as trying D3D11, rendering in a seperate thread, windowed/exclusive mode etc, but no matter what, it only displays the top half of the screen. Furthermore the PIN-info looks correct and the OSD claims it is correctly re-sizing it, the image itself is just missing the bottom.

Try the "clean-up video timings database" button in Reclock's advanced settings.
Also, info on your hardware/software/OS/drivers is always good to provide.
EDIT: if the above doesn't fix it, since you said CPU is high, maybe ReClock is maxing it out when doing resampling? Check ReClock's CPU usage and if possible lower the output sample rate and/or interpolation quality.

I know this is kind of off topic however I find it very odd that your refresh rate is set to 23.976Hz and the video is running at 29.970Hz. Unless it is flagged content or something.
EDIT: Never mind it is flagged content. I can see that based on the DVD resolution now.
How did you force madVR to change the refresh rate to 23.976Hz even though the source filter only claims 29.970fps (even though we know it is actually 23.976fps)?

I tried your suggestion. You guessed it right. CPU is the bottleneck in my system. When I changed the interpolation quality in ReClock from "best sync" to "fast sync", the video playback became perfect. :thanks:

Who knows if it's the problem but in the screenshot that isn't working properly notice how the OSD says that it's Full range as reported by ffdshow and in the working screenshot it says limited range.
Only thing that becomes immediately apparent to me.. not much info given and it's just a stab in the dark :p

I have the same kind of question. I mean, I understood (but I'm maybe wrong) that Madvr "analyse" the real framerate received by it and can so overwrite the framerate announced by the source filter or something like that, a functionality near of the FTC of the evr custom renderer of MPC. But currently I'm not sure because no information about the "real" framerate expected by Madvr when a IVTC filter is used is displayed.
Madshi, can you just tell us what is exactly the behavior of Madvr in such case?

How about an additional tick box, which enables or disables the auto refresh rate feature while keeping the refresh rates filled in. ATM, the only possibility to temporarily disable the autorefresh is to remove the rates from the text field and to fill them in again later. Sometimes I would like to have a quick overview over a couple of video clips with different frame rates, and in this situation the small pause / black frame between the videos caused by the auto refresh rate adjustment is a little bit annoying.

With ATI, you can setup a profile for the refresh rate, then run the profile from a batch file. There are a few free tools that you can call from the cmdline in a batch file. Some players support it, for example, jrMediaCenter supports a command line call to modify monitor settings that can be called in a batch file. There are numerous ways.

They are hard to capture, they only appear when paning. It's like the picture splits in the top, I've seen it before but don't remember how to remove it.

How have you tested and concluded it's madVR? Have you tried other decoders? It could also be a certain combination of filters or settings.

besides what nev said about the guy not using the auto refresh rate option, you can actually do this manually by adding a "23p" to the name of the file (of course you have to have auto refresh rate enabled and set a 23/24p resolution as well).

LOL, by no means was I trying to talk about this with those screenshots, but since I have been having trouble with .79 and de-interlacing, I have been tinkering with refresh rates a lot in the past few weeks.
Short answer: The followup responses were correct...since most of my DVD's are actually 23.976 at the source (and only report 29.970fps because of 3:2 pull-down) so far I found it best just to set "1080p23, 1080p24" under display-modes in Madvr. (Or I just leave it blank.) I just use ReClock and manually change my monitor from to 59/60hz if I actually need to (which is rare.)
Longer answer: Notice for that screen-shot, I am directly playing the VOB file in MPC, rather than opening it up as a DVD. I normally do not do this because it will incorrectly report any DVD as 29.970, regardless of the source file's "true" refresh rate. On the other hand, opening it up as a DVD will read the info based on the IFO file and correctly report 23.970 up through the chain. (However, this is counter-intuitive to me since MediaInfo reports 29.970 in the IFO file and 23.976 in the .VOB (even if the VOB is reporting 2:3 "pull-up" being performed to make the encode)...but that is a question for another board at another time. ;) )
Anyway, back on-topic: golagoda - Good eye on seeing that difference in ranges. However, I am pretty positive that is irrelevant. That has to do with color-spaces (0-255=="full" and 16-235=="limited".) When using RGB mode, one explicitly sets the output colorspace in ffdShow or whatever filter is doing the conversion (which is 0-255 in my case.) However, YV12/NV12 and other "raw" FOURCC's do not report nor set this, thus the OSD is showing a "best guess." Unfortunately that "guess" is wrong, but it is no big deal since I explicitly set my display to 0-255 in madVR.
...On second thought that is not "back on-topic" at all. :devil:
I apologize for that (and the long-winded response.) Thanks everyone for your responses and your help. But for now I think I will stick to NV12/YV10, which is the de-facto standard in most situations anyway (especially when we start seeing more 10-bit encodes and I can start using P010 ;).)
The only reason I was even attempted this in the first place is that after hours of testing, I am pretty sure that my .79/de-interlace frame-drop problems are the result of my GPU's limited RAM (256MB) and processing power, and from what I understand, the RGB format pushes even more processing away from the GPU and back to the CPU...it was a shot in the dark anyway and probably will not solve my problem.
In any case, if it is a bug in Madvr itself, I figured it would not hurt to report it.

Got my new Denon AVR-1912 Receiver today and encountered a new problem... Before i used the HDMI passthrough of the receiver to get my signal to the TV my configuration was like this: ATI CCC set to 4:4:4 Full RGB output, lav video set to untouched levels, madvr set to 0-255 output and for my TV the same, RGB 0-255. When I took a look on a black clipping test video with this configuration i could see the flashing fields from like 16 to 25(which is the maximum of this test pattern). But now with the new a/v receiver i can't see clipping even on 25 with the same configuration... When i set madvr now to 16-235, the flashing fields get visible again from about 15 to 25... Does that mean the receiver cant output FULL RGB?

Don't set madVR to 16-235. Set the dynamic range in CCC to Limited 16-235 and see if that fixes your issue.

My Marantz SR5006 can only pass through 0-255 yCbCr, not 0-255 RGB.
Since many of the same components are in Denon and Marantz products (same owner) there might be a relation here.

Also more lanczos taps options would be nice, like 6 and would there be any advantage to more than 8 taps?With more taps, aliasing goes down, but ringing increases by a huge amount.
When scaling 1080p content to 4K though, pretty much all of the upsampling algorithms suck, which I think shows that there's probably a lot more that can be done for DVD to 1080p right now.
Lanczos8 gave the best results (ringing aside) if I remember correctly though, so more taps would probably be a good thing if something could be done about ringing. (it would be nice if something could be done about aliasing when using linear light scaling too)
They are hard to capture, they only appear when paning. It's like the picture splits in the top, I've seen it before but don't remember how to remove it.Sounds like screen tearing. Do you have v-sync forced off in your driver settings? Are you not using full-screen exclusive mode?
