Hello Doom9 Forum
I need your help. Can you clever people anwser this question:
I want to buy a new monitor. In the near future i want to start photography and start searching.
Monitors like the Eizo CS2420 ColorEdge got great Picture Quality but is it fast enough for madvr?
Any other displays you can recommend? :scared:
Thank you all.
@madvr: I really love Madvr. Fantastic job.
CS is their consumer line IPS monitor, it's no much better than any other prosumer IPS monitor.
For MOVIES specifically, high precision internal color mapping comes SECOND to Contrast-Ratio.
In that space, IPS performs poorly.
OLED is the -current- king of movie monitors, but it will soon be obsolete giving way to LMCL (dual layer lcd).
For all current purchases, if you're not swinging @ the price of OLED or (Existing LMCL, Eizo CG3145, $40,000, Panasonic Megacon, rumored $150,000+)
Then VA-Panels are the best go to, ~$500-600. Any higher, you might as well get OLED.
But, because the very first consumer LMCL is coming out quarter 3 This year, (street price < Oled) You might want to hold out to see how that goes.
That said, Regardless of what monitor you choose, You HAVE to buy a Colorimeter. Madvr's GREATEST FEATURE is not upscaling, or HDR tonemapping, though we agree the tonemapping is top kek, Madvr's greatest feature is 3DLUT color correction. Without which, Everything that comes out of the PC is Blind, and Trash.
There are only 2 budget friendly colorimeters on the market right now, i1display pro, and colormunki display. Either one will work.

professional devices can be to slow for proper motion displaying.
the device in his question has at least 15 ms gtg response times on paper can nearly for sure not do 23p naively so yes i would avoid this one for madVR.
The current best Motion-Handling monitor is the Viewsonic XG270 IPS.
It has a native 240hz ips panel, but its' best motion performance is actually in the 100-120hz range. (to prevent overshoot).
Is this good for movies though, definitely not, since it's IPS. :(

Every frame takes slightly different amount of time to upscale. 2 video files even if the same resolution, if they're different bitrate, it could take shorter or longer.

Us LG OLED owners don't need to use madvr's 3dlut capability since it can be directly uploaded to the tv. ;)

Buh due to ABL, It's still meh. :D

madVR 113 seems to either have improved render times or its measurements. Previously, when playing 23.976 movies, dropped frames occur if render times raise more than 35-36ms, now they can reach 40-41ms without dropped frames. Hence lots of headroom for upscaling enhancements. Anyone notices that too ?
if you want a screen with 100% DCI P3 support
My SDR display reaches about 95% DCI-P3 in paper, is there any benefit to set madVR calibration to that instead of BT709 and is there any way to check or just by eyes ?

Fairly common knowledge. I do wonder why people pose a question that takes them seconds to answer themselves with almost zero effort or knowledge required, then proceed to question the validity of their own hypothesis even after someone else suggests their question is in fact a valid one.

Regarding to SDR, ABL is not a problem until ~140 nits (depending on the set), ASBL can be turned off in In-Start service menu, ANSD can be real though, more info (https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?p=1871836#post1871836).
So with sdr, that's not an issue.

I turned something off in my service menu within week of owning my 2015 OLED but I cant remember what it was now, the issue I had was that bright web pages would dim the whole screen when moving from page to page, it was really distracting, not sure that was possible with later models though but I dont get it anymore, not sure if this was ABL or ASBL

Please note that the measured average rendering times in the OSD will not change. However, you should now be able to get nearer to the theoretically max possible rendering times without getting frame drops. This change could potentially introduce new bugs. Hopefully not, but we'll have to wait and see...

looks like it hit smoothmotion. it's supposed to be buggy right now.
kinda funny it been so may years where i question the shader steps that take about 0.3 ms with every hardware available and Shiandow later confirm that doing everything in it's own shader cost performance.

Hi I’ve noticed watching movies from my hdd connected by usb 3.0 directly to my tv plays all movies a lot smoother than madvr. Madvr I’ve tried smooth motion on and off changed the display modes with different settings (23,24,60p) and also blank. Ive also played with custom resolution utility and got the exact match 23.976 and also tried double of that. Still the movies don’t look as smooth as direct through hdd. My card is gtx1080 with i7 7700k. Dropped frames show 20-30 mins and all settings are well within rendering of 20-25mms. I know my pc with madvr should outperform my tv (Samsung Q9fn)

Maybe you have some motion interpolation on when using the internal player. On my TV, settings are different for every input type so I have to disable TruMotion on each one individually

I was just about to type about the input settings and see you addressed this ;). The motion settings are the same on the inputs I’ve also tried playing with different combinations. I’m happy with tv being able to play movies smooth on its own saves power with pc not being used. But I paid good money for my tv and know madvr can do better. I must be doing something wrong

Hi, could be a number of things, plus jitter could also mean different things too, you might not be properly refresh rate matching or over taxing your CPU or GPU with MADVR / PLAYER / decoding - start by adding your kit list to your signiture like mine so we can see what you're dealing with. Then when playing a movie press CONTROL+J and take a screen shot of the readout, when you post it dont upload the image, using a URL link.
Damn, pal, you could've at least mention my name in your reply. I don't really know what to add, I've just installed fresh OS on fresh drive, and I didn't do anything special with my system, so everything should work well, like it used to, so I figured it's something with the renderer. Here're the ctrl+j results: https://fastpic.ru/view/111/2020/0205/_c37132cd9e93df32874c46eebb7eeeff.png.html.

I have a Q9FN and can confirm that the files directly played with the TV are handled with motion interpolation and so motion looks very fluid or smooth, but I personally don't like that because it looks unnatural smooth to me, although they've done a good job in this TV.
-> Soap opera effect
My personal advice: Do not upgrade the firmware to 1290 and stay at 1270 for now.
Enable smooth motion on the HDMI port of your HTPC and it should look similar or probaly identical.

Hi,
I have a refresh rate problem, I've setup madvr to switch to 2560x1440p144 when viewing a movie and it works. So the only thing is that the refresh rate is variable and can't stay stable at 144hz. If I open madvr settings and move my mouse the screen stay perfectly at 144hz, once I close it and watch the movie the refresh rate vary.
How can I fix this ? Thanks

nvidia control panel -> 3d settings -> manage 3D settings -> under global setting you can disable it globally but you should use the program setting to disable it for the targeted software. if it is not listed you can add the program by yourself.

I've noticed the same on my Samsung (referring to different settings/different input).
Digital clean view?
Auto motion plus?
Film mode?
You should be able to achieve the same visual smoothness thru the TV settings. I've never used MadVR smooth motion.

OK finally could get the OLED65C9 at a decent price recently, and took the opportunity to upgrade some of my hardware for 4k HDR (see sig. for details). I have now set up madVR almost perfectly to my taste. I'd be content with leaving Windows HDR on all the time and letting madVR use that (in fact I'd prefer it since the OS elements remain in SDR while only the video is in HDR), but it seems Windows messes up black levels on SDR content so I'm relying on madVR to auto switch HDR instead.
This is more like a nitpick but when madVR switches to HDR mode and I get out of full screen, HDR is still enabled and everything else is out of whack. I thought that was normal behavior, but then I tried an AMD RX560 (14CU) and that one changed to SDR whenever I got out of full screen. I am not using FSE though that setting didn't do anything. Between the GTX 1650S and the RX560 all madVR settings were the same (freshly installed defaults but unchecked all the "trade performance" settings, plus I'm using a custom madVR refresh rate for 23.976, if that matters). It's probably a long shot but I wonder if there's anything I can do to trigger the AMD behavior (without switching to AMD which had bigger issues).
I'm on Windows 10-64 1909, NV drivers 442.19, MPC-HC 1.9.1 by CLSID w/ internal LAV Filters 0.74.1.31.

The beta for the HDR to SDR tone mapping. Although it's worth using even without that as with this beta it improves rendering speed. However I would avoid if you use Smooth Motion because it causes it to crash.
See changelog here:

Andy that's not normal. At least that's not my experience. When I close jriver mc it returns me to the res and refresh I started with and disables hdr cleanly for me. On a 2070 with latest driver and last fall's win 10 with all the latest updates. Something doesn't seem right there as it should work.

Ah I meant when still playing, but just getting out of full screen. When I actually close MPC-HC it does switch back. It's not a big deal, but I was wondering, since the AMD card does switch back to SDR when getting out of full screen. The settings in madVR to switch back refresh rate when getting out of full screen doesn't work either, I think HDR and refresh rate switching are handled independently.

That wouldn't be the expected behavior imo. Whether fullscreen or not I would expect the resolution, refresh rate, and HDR to stay until there video is stopped. The amd behavior you're describing sounds more like a bug than a feature. [emoji846]

Can someone take a look at my "Zoom" Profile?
if (srcWidth = 3840) and (srcHeight >= 1920) "Top"
else if (srcWidth = 1920) and (srcHeight >= 960) "Top"
else "Middle"
Top - Image moves to the top of the screen and subtitle to the bottom of the screen
Middle - image is not moved. Subtitle to the bottom of the screen
My problem is that sometimes the subtitle is retained at the bottom of the image and not the screen. As you could imagine, if you have black bars, the subtitle is not on the black bars but on the video image itself
Is there a way to ensure that the subtitle will always be on the bottom of the screen / black bar?

Yeah, I can see that point of view as well, I was just pleasantly surprised when the AMD card did what it did, and now I want that from Nvidia. Long shot or maybe impossible, I guess. MS should actually just fix the black levels of SDR (actually the whole desktop black levels are raised) content when in HDR mode.
SamuriHL
7th February 2020, 18:31
That would be nice, yea. I wouldn't hold out hope of that happening any time soon from MS, though. I also don't think madshi would entertain such an option at the moment given what's on his plate. He seems solely focused on HDR tone mapping and kicking the Envy out the door. One can hardly blame him for that priority!
Andy o
8th February 2020, 02:24
Oh yeah I wouldn't ask Madshi to do it, it's just a minor annoyance and probably not even related to madVR itself. Been out of the HTPC tweaking game for a few years now, but coming back and actually being able to use these new (for me) HDR features in madVR I can't say how much I appreciate the uniqueness of this software.

I don't know if I want to know if the test build will improve what I already have, after tweaking for weeks towards something I'm good with. I'm just passing through HDR, so I (think?) I don't need tone mapping?
