One possibility results from making changes to refresh rate timings amongst others using CRU. If that is the case then just delete all but the active identification as it won't allow you to delete the active one anyway.

Now that was some pinpoint answer!

Yep, I use a custom resolution made in CRU. Thanks for the tip mate!

Not sure if there's some kind of spyware in here but my player has never tried to connect online until MadVR is enabled. If I disable it as the output, it stops trying to connect. What+why is madvr trying to talk online?

madVR can be controlled remotely from the local area network, feel free to block it if you want to.

You can also disable it by right-clicking on the system tray icon and selecting Disable LAN Access. Run madHcCtrl.exe to launch the system tray icon.

I haven't tried, but at 1000RPM they're really inaudible. From a quick google a couple of apps might be able to tweak the fan curve of this card https://forums.guru3d.com/threads/rtx-3070-fe-0rpm-custom-fan-curve-bug.435287/

But if you don't game it's really a waste of money. There are lower tier cards that have come out recently that have HDMI 2.1 like the 3060 or AMD 6700XT that are less expensive and also most of them should have good coolers. And they're just as hard to get as a 3070FE as well.
Hi Andy,
Thanks for confirming that those fans are inaudible at 1000rpm. That's definitely good news. The need to investigate how to tweak the fan curve will not arise if I can't hear anything.

While I'm not a gamer at present, there is a possibility that my grandchildren might nudge me in that direction (for their own benefit, of course). I also have some past experience of video editing and 3D CAD work that I might like to exploit with a new machine. I have therefore now gone ahead and ordered a zippy new PC with an RTX 3070. My habit has been to buy highly-specced workstations and then keep them for quite a long time, so I doubt if this investment will go to waste.

Your help on this topic has been much appreciated :)

So I could change madvr settings using an ipad while watching a movie? That would be sweet but how? :D

I use iRule but you can use many other solutions that work with any iOS or Android phone/tablet.

I was more hoping for having complete madvr gui acessible not just shortcuts.

Add a dummy display to your madVR PC:
https://www.amyuni.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3030

Open the madVR settings screen on the dummy display and then remote into it from phone/tablet with TeamViewer or similar remote software.

There, madVR GUI on your phone/tablet.

^ Not sure why I wasn't doing something like that already during initial adjusting of madVR? It sure would have made things easier. There are a lot of commands I access by remote but far less than what is offered. I think I'm going to try that next time I have a rare occasion changing something in madVR. Thanks for the suggestion.

Not really the direct access I was thinking of when I read from Asmodian that there is a way to remote control madvr but in the end it would bring the same result so thanks for the hint :)

I'm surprised that you found a 3070, but bear in mind that the model I'm talking about is a specific one called 3070 FE (Founders Edition) by Nvidia themselves. If I'm understanding you correctly you ordered a fully built PC with a 3070, which may come with a different model of the 3070 by another brand, thus a different cooler. In any case it should be a good cooler since the card is high-ish end, but I only have the experience with my 3070 FE.

pretty much every cards beats a FE version so he should get at least the same performance and for a high chance more performance at a lower volume.

Anyone know what may be causing lots of very small orange dots to appear in videos?

Has anyone had this start occurring on their systems recently where it didn't occur before?

I thought it might be noise but I've tried changing dithering and noise settings in the dithering options in MadVR, but that didn't stop or significantly change it. I see it occurring in and around multiple colors on screen, but perhaps most heavily near light browns (skins), red objects, and orange objects. I tried to take a screen shot, but the issue doesn't display in screen shots. I have an optimus system, but since the last major Windows 10 update (20H2) I've been unable to use the Nvidia GPU (GTX 680M), its software, nor Optimus for anything, and am stuck using the Intel HD Graphics 4000 for everything (including watching any videos).

If anyone has any settings you want me to check or test let me know.

Yeah, if you have a Windows PC you can simply launch madVR tray on that PC and remotely connect to your other madVR instance on the other PC.

When you enable LAN access on madVR you will see all running instances of madVR in your home network in each madVR tray tool list.

To control madVR like you said from a phone or tablet would requite an app.

I tried to make a madVR control app before, but I found out that the madVR command API only affects the madVR settings on disk, and not the live, running instance of madVR. Meaning you needed to close and re-open madVR to see any changes that you made to the madVR config via remote control. So ultimately I gave up on that idea.

The other way you can control some madVR options is to set up hotkeys in the madVR hotkeys screen and you can use some remote control app on your phone or tablet that lets you simulate hotkeys on your PC.

I think OEMs might tend to skimp on the cooler design, and may have worse coolers, even Asus has a blower 3070 available which are not ideal if you're looking for silence and can spare the case space. Also not all of them have semi-passive coolers.

I guess if it's bad one can always try to get a 3rd party cooler which I actually did, but haven't installed cause I found I didn't really need to, plus I found out the 3070FE is a PITA to do cause it has proprietary fan leads.

I specified the MSI NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 8GB GAMING X TRIO, as this was rated as the quietest 3070 at https://premiumbuilds.com/graphics-cards/best-rtx-3070-aftermarket-cards/.

The wisdom of this choice will be revealed when my new PC is delivered on 23 April. I doubt if I will be disappointed, as it will be replacing a machine that is rather long in the tooth (rather like me) :)

Looks great, it acually will probably have more headroom than mine before it turns on the fans, if it's semi-passive.

What version of madVR (that doesn't expire) let me choose an HDR measurement file? I tried with madVRhdrMeasure113 and 128 but they don't seem to show the folder selection icon (https://i.imgur.com/TzxdSqh.jpg).

Also is there a way to load madVR profiles per title? Maybe copying settings.bin to the movie folder or something like that?

Edit: looks like beta 85 (https://www.avsforum.com/threads/madvr-tool-madmeasurehdr-optimizer-measurements-dynamic-clipping-target-nits.3040072/post-59521352) broke the measurement file support.

In the newer test builds, the measurements folder config is under configuration => files & folders
I never got them to work starting from some build around 90-something. Anyway, the live method in v113 and newer is better than the measurement files.

You can select profiles depending on what's in the file name using the condition filename="whatever" but you'd have to create a different profile for every one of your movies.
If your problem is adapting the tone mapping settings to different types of movies (maybe depending on the mastering data?), I'd do something like renaming the movies this way: "movie title [hdr_profile1].mkv" and then use filename="*[hdr_profile1]*" to map them to just a few different profiles.

Thanks for the help. I used v113 before and it was ok, now in v130 it triggers HDR mode on my display so I will test with the measurement files, I fail to see how a live algo can predict peak brightness so far ahead if not relying on a measurement file.

The per movie profile was only to adjust the gamma, some 3D movies have brightness pumped it up to compensate for the glasses.

Use profiles if you want to edit settings per movie.

Make like a "3D gamma" profile and then in the profile selection rules have something like; if the file name contains X, then select profile "3D gamma". Then come up with some special word for X to add to your movie filenames that you want to be gamma adjusted.

I'm using the following code to distribute gamma and calibration settings for each type. Everything works without adding tags to the file name. Maybe it will help:
if (3D) "3D"
else if (HDR) "HDR"
else "SDR"

And for the HDR profile (sometimes I turn off the detection of black bars, since the rendering time is reduced on 16:9 movies) with some files, I use the keyboard shortcuts programmed on the remote (mostly numbers) ;)

Yes, it's actually 3D to 2D titles to leverage the open matte of some 3D releases. I already set it up and it works, but the gamma only goes up to 2.60, it would need to be 2.84 to mimic the 2D release... for the time being I lower brightness to -15. Better than nothing.

Perhaps a silly question, but how can I not get dropped frames in madVR OSD if I get sometimes max stats of 34 ms for rendering for a 60p AV1 8K HDR video? I watched carefully but I don't see dropped frames, stutters or anything like that.

el Filou

The important is the present step. As long as the render queue is filled high enough to feed the present queue, you can have one frame (or even many) that takes more time to render and it won't have an impact on presentation as the queue is there to hide the variations in render times.

I think OEMs might tend to skimp on the cooler design, and may have worse coolers, even Asus has a blower 3070 available which are not ideal if you're looking for silence and can spare the case space. Also not all of them have semi-passive coolers.

blower are for racks and massively better there then other cooler.

but except for the blower cards i have not seen a single GPU test where the FE edition isn't stomped into the ground by board partner cards including temps, clock rate and noise.

Need some help figuring something out:

Had been using a 980 Ti for a few years, outputing 24hz to a panasonic plasma. Never had any issues. Upgraded to a 3080, and now i get weird stuttering, but only if im at 24hz and trying to play sdr content. If i play a UHD remux, I dont get the stutters. The weird part is that im not showing any dropped frames, even though that's exactly what it feels like is happening. messed with every setting i could think of with the same results. Anyone have any ideas?

So there's no way to play this file using madVR and MPC-HC without the image looking all green?

https://pastebin.com/7Tk6DXne

My config is still old... monitor: W2452V, video card Radeon R7 265, Windows 10-64 bit, Core i7 4770... and yet this is the first time I try playing a 4K video and it doesn't show correctly.

What about this Dolby Vision support? I only found this thread about this issue:

Profile 5 Dolby Vision is non-backward compatible which means the player itself has to decode it, and madVR doesn't. Dolby Vision is proprietary and there is no indication of when or if unlicensed playback will be possible.

Does anyone have madVRhdrMeasure84 (http://madshi.net/madVRhdrMeasure84.zip)? I want to test the profiles I measured with HDRDynamicOptimizer but they don't seem to work on v113, or v86 which are the oldest I have. Couldn't find a link in Internet Archive either.

How much "old stuff" are you dealing with? If there's not a lot of it and you have a fast CPU, the best thing to do would be to run the stuff through Handbrake using the Decomb filter to make it progressive. I've found Decomb to be an excellent de-interlacing algorithm.

If you don't use D3D11 for decoding in LAV, you can deinterlace in madVR.

yes nvidia deint which is a realtime frame adaptive deinterlancer.
"IVTC"/"decomb" is a basic feature of this algorithm.

if the file is telecine not interlaced IVTC in madVR would be even better.

this here is a contender or best deinterlacer: http://avisynth.nl/index.php/QTGMC
obviously not lossless except if you are fine with 100GB+ files.

Also, make sure it's interlaced and not telecine'd media.

you will notice this by every Xth fame having a duplicate if you go frame by frame.

Plenty of IVTC filters in avisynth for example.

as for deinterlacing I usually go for options that double the play speed, keep full resolution and update the odd scanlines on odd frames and the even scanlines on even frames.

Madvr/mpc-hc unable to go to fullscreen exclusive mode when Direct3D 11 is used for presentation. Direct3D9 seems to still work fine.

Nvidia driver version where I noticed it:
465.89
Version I used before 460.79.

"(says source filter)" would tend to indicate that it gets that information from upstream.
What does playing with EVR do?
Would you have any IVTC enabled in the decoder by any chance? I just watched some motorsport video from YouTube encoded with 1:1:1:1:2 cadence, sometimes you see some weird stuff.

No IVTC, but I think you helped me track down the issue and I think it might be a bug?

EVR's media info showed this:
Frame rate mode : Constant
Frame rate : 59.940 (60000/1001) FPS
Original frame rate : 25.000 FPS

What I'm unsure of is what that Original Frame rate means. My guess is interpolation was used to go from 25-60. EVR has no problem playing it back at 60fps, and it certainly looks a lot smoother than 24/25fps content.

Whatever the cause, it seems like madVR shouldn't be keying off that original frame rate value though.

How do you know there isn't any IVTC?

madVR keys off whatever the source filter tells it. In this case the source filter says the video is 25 fps.

Are you using hardware decoding? Perhaps the GPU is doing IVTC?

Okay, I think I might understand a little more now, but I'm certainly not an expert on this stuff. Upstream in this case is the LAV Video Decoder then.

Yes, LAV is using my GTX 1660 for decoding. Is there any way to tell if IVTC is happening? It makes sense that that's what would be going on given the 25fps original source. Why would hardware vs. software matter? If IVTC is going on, can it be disabled?

Honestly it looks better in VLC and MPC-HC with EVR because of the 60fps.

Asmodian

Try switching to software decoding in LAV, GPU hardware automatically does whatever it thinks it should.

You can tell if the hardware is doing IVTC if it returns fewer frames than you sent it. ;)

Is it an mkv? If it is then maybe you can try to edit it with MKVToolNix to change or remove the "original framerate" tag with the header editor.
It could be a transcode where the original was 25 and it was reencoded to 60, with interpolation or with pulldown. What kind of source is it (film, TV, computer gaming, animation)?
If you frame skip in MPC by pausing then pressing Ctrl+right arrow, are some frames repeated or blurred?

huhn

you could change/add to the name FPS=60. that may work.
the frame rate can be stored at different parts of a file and a splitter/decoder has to choice one.

I have a two-monitor setup, main monitor 240hz (BenQ XL2540) second monitor 60hz (Dell S2721QS) (or - in Windows advanced display settings, actually 59.997)

When I play content on the second monitor, ctrl-J correctly shows 60hz, then after a few seconds the video hitches and it switches to 240hz (causing hundreds of presentation glitches per second ofc.)
It's the same duration before this happens every time.
If I swap the player between monitors, it will correctly take each monitor's refresh rate.
But then if it's left on the 60hz monitor it will have this problem after a few seconds.

Is it potentially related to the fact that the 60hz monitor has no "standard mode" according to MadVR?

^ 60hz monitor

I screwed around with every automatic display rate switching setting in MadVR and MPC-HC to no avail.
Trying to set up custom modes on the 60hz monitor did nothing - most of the modes worked during the test, but remained permanently in "OS isn't aware of this mode yet!" after reboots.

FWIW my 60hz monitor is in flipped portrait mode

Any ideas? Kind of want to lobotomize myself after messing with this for an hour.

windows has major problems with two refreshrates (they are working on that for some time now).

you should try windows 7 overlay rendering if you have an nvidia GPU this doesn't care about about the refreshrate of the desktop and totally avoids these issues where a composition rate mismatch can happen.

Ha. I disabled hardware decoding in LAV. Still getting 25fps in MadVR. Here's the crazy thing. I noticed I was getting massively dropped frames for no reason, and then I did the math. MadVR is reporting 35 dropped frames every second... or 60fps minus the 25 it is showing. The video seems extra stuttery in comparison to normal 24fps content which typically looks pretty good. Weird stuff.

It's an MP4 unfortunately. Source is web video. It's by an American content creator though so why the "original" would have ever been 25fps makes absolutely no sense.

I stepped through it in MPC, there appear to be 60 true frames per second, nothing blurred or repeated. So either it was interpolated rather well, or that "Original Frame Rate" value of 25 is just completely bogus.
