Quick question. If I want to enable/disable madVR programmatically, I'm seeing this key in the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\MPC-HC\MPC-HC\Settings\DSVidRen
System Default has a value of 0 while madVR has a value of 12. Is this always the case, or could activating madVR require a value different than 12 for some users?

a split is used in this screen this should be the case. because this only used for nvidia and intel GPU. maybe your intel IGPU is used for madVR.
MPC-HC and SVP are definitely using the Radeon.

Is there a way to know which graphic card madVR is using, and whether it is using OpenCL?

I just ran a test: running MPC-HC in Performance and Economy mode without SVP.

In High Performance mode, rendering time is 14.7ms. In Economy mode, the same video renders in 9.6ms. It seems to further silently drop settings when running on the Intel.

I need to call out to any experts on madvr/4:4:4 display etc.

I can use 4:4:4 with 23.976 refresh rate in PC mode on my Samsung TV, but this is without any motion enhancements. And to be frank, pure 23.976 doesn't look very smooth (especially in panning/moving scenes).
I am too annoyed by it to be able to keep it this way. Something must be done...

However, if I disable the PC mode, then I can get all the options in the menu and configure the motion stuff (also better blacks), but no longer 4:4:4 (which also makes fonts on the desktop look strange).
According to people here this seems to basically make madvr "useless", when it is not displaying on a 4:4:4 display.

I would love some more info on what exactly goes on when you are using madvr on a non-4:4:4 display.

So if I were to remove madvr - what should be used instead? What are the options and are all options really crappy? :(

edit: I moved from a Sony TV which seems to have had the motion stuff enabled for PC mode. I did not expect this dilemma when moving to Samsung.

you are pretty lucky that pc mode at 23p works. it's pretty normal that samsung only supports pc mode at 60 HZ.

madVR does better scaling too and chroma scaling has to be done when you use a PC as source.
the chroma scaler lost a lot of it benefits it's still not useless.

if you get "better black" than I guess your RGB level setup is wrong.

when your TV doesn't support 4:4:4 or you can't use it. it will be scaled from 4:4:4 to 4:2:2 or lower and than again 4:4:4. this is not optimal at all.

if the position of madVR doesn't change in newer mpc-hc releases it should be 12 for all user.

try GPU-Z.
don't let this program run in the background it can case dropped frames in madVR. only use it to check GPU usage.

a spike in GPU/CPU usage thanks to SVP can cause dropped frames too. you should make sure you have some breathing room when using something like SVP.

In SVP, disabling OpenCL *and then going into Video Profiles | Reset to default* increased the performance and lowered all rendering times. This allows me to raise all madVR settings. I'll try it on the 1080p TV later.

Btw, I'm trying to set a profile condition with aspect ratio and it's not working

if (targetWidth <= 1366) && (srcHeight <= 300) && (srcAR = 4:3) "Laptop 288p"
else if (targetWidth <= 1366) && (srcHeight <= 300) "Laptop 288p W"

I have VCD videos and somehow the last track always ends up being 16:9 (1.45 pixel ratio) instead of 4:3 (1.09 pixel ratio) for all other tracks. When I configure this condition in madVR, it always selects the first profile in both cases. How can I get this condition to work?

I could also ask whether there's a way to fix the aspect ratio in the VCD file itself but that would be a conversation for another forum.

Yeah I've gathered that I'm "lucky" in that regards. :)

The "better blacks" are not because of RGB level range, it's calibrated and fine, but the point is that the overall blackness of the screen is better when the "Motion Plus -> LED Clear Motion" is enabled, and that is not available in PC mode.

You say it will be scaled from 4:4:4 to 4:2:2 and back to 4:4:4 which is "not optimal" - I would like more technical info on this if anyone has. Thanks.

Btw, I was wondering whether there was a way to re-encode videos with the rescaling quality produced by madVR combined with SVP. I just found a solution, in case anyone is interested!

This will be my solution to convert bogus 16:9 VCD files into 4:3 720p high-quality video.

1. In this case, configure MPC-HC to override pixel ratio to 4:3
2. Play the video with SVP + madVR with MPC-HC in window mode
3. Use Camtasia Studio to record the video output!
4. Slide the audio 1 tick to the right to resync audio/video
5. Encode

:)

With this setting, there are 3 hungry software running at once. One is CPU-hungry, one is GPU-hungry and one is HD-hungry. They run smoothly together.

If I upload that on YouTube, some people might wonder how the heck I uploaded videos of HIGHER quality than the original files! And 30fps instead of 25fps.

I would just love to get NNEDI3 Frame Doubling to work before re-encoding videos in such a way.

Still, it would be great if there was a way of doing so with even higher settings that the computer can't render in real-time.

have a look at the Avisynth or VapourSynth forum. the nnedi3 functionm in madVR is from a avisynth plugin. and SVP it self is running with avisynth too.

Since I haven't found anyone who could simply explain the steps, I'm guessing this is a very complicated process that would be very time-consuming and require advanced study of AviSynth... and also considering none of the encoding software I've seen are offering these options.

This would be the job of someone who wants to write an encoding software that supports those features.

As far as the LED Clear Motion goes, it is a BFI and I do not get similar results by simply lowering brightness. Unfortunately.

So my ultimate question would probably be, if I stay in PC mode, then what can I do in order to get better motion?
I have never figured out madvr Smooth Motion. I believe I would need a higher refresh rate than 23,976 for that...

because nearly all TV convert any input back to 4:2:2 or 4:2:0.
there is no good reason to do this see sony TVs but that's reality.

You cannot stop at 4:2:2 because you cannot watch video in YUV, it is not a format one can display physically. The video needs to be converted to RGB (by physical reality equivalent to 4:4:4) for display because the display is made up of little Red, Green, and Blue sub-pixels. U and V sub-pixels don't make any sense and thinking about them makes me think of an M.C. Escher drawing. ;)

You have to live with the conversion to 4:2:2 or the "non-enhanced motion". Also write nasty letters to your TV manufacture so they might stop doing the processing in 4:2:2 in future models.

Sadly this is simply where the TV industry is at currently. Having a real 24p mode with 4:4:4 is a step in the right direction and already better than most TVs.

Here are the GPU-Z results when playing a 1080p .TP on 768p display.

I included madvR rendering stats, Radeon usage stats, Radeon tech info, and also Intel GPU usage stats just in case.

In this case I'm using SVP with OpenCL disabled since it works better that way. CPU runs at about 50%.

You can see there are tons of dropped frames while the CPU is used at 50% and the GPU is used at 57%.

madVR is using the Radeon and NNEDI3 still doesn't work.

i think that, madvr does a upscaling to 4:2:0 to 4:4:4, which is not the same quality as originial 4:4:4 chroma( for pc games 4:4:4 chroma is more important that games use native 4:4:4 chroma) )

its just a conversion to from 4:2:0 to 4:4:4...so if your tv is good at conversion processes like my pio, you will be good with video hdmi mode i guess.

and there are so many bugs trying to watch MKV movies. black flashes, video is continuing rendering subtitles when paused and sometimes the video freeze and audio continues, sometimes it just doesn't continue at all and freeze on the last paused image, and sometimes it just freeze randomly when fast forward or back forward. and sometimes just low performance the renderer is doing 1-7 intead 6-7, and it just dropping frames non stop.

Using Potplayer + MADVR + LavFilters CUVID

So many video bugs I can't watch a movie properly. to fix the video I need to reopen it stop it or switch to JINC and it fix the slow down instant.

With 7970 same settings I didn't have a single issue

there is no 4:2:2 RGB and that's not 16-235

RGB is always 4:4:4 if limited or not.
the YCbCr can be 4:4:4, 4:2:2 and with HDMI 2.0 even 4:2:0.
YCbCR is always excepted to be limited range 16-235 at least in the HDMI spec.

i see this 4:2:2 RGB Myst not the frist time i wonder where this wrong information is spread.

the 4:4:4 is about chroma size compared to luma size nothing else.

yes. just tried it with DXVA native and the rest of the decoder look like normal software decoder to madVR no reason not to work.

On the screens I can see you're playing interlaced content. Are you sure it's not SVP somehow interfering with deinterlacing?
Have you tried playing progressive content to see if the issue persists?

Whether you play MKV/MP4/AVI/whatever doesn't matter to madVR, what might matter is the video format: H264, MPEG2, etc., so tell us about that.

Have you tried switching to software decoding in LAVFilters' settings? I tried no Hardware Acceleration, no CUVID , it still happened with madvr NNEDI3
Have you tried resetting madVR to defaults, just to make be sure it's not config-related? I'm sure it's not that, I tried changing every possible setting. NNEDI3 and - Use Separate device for presentation have very very bad effects.

I only tried 344.75 and 344.80, I can't go lower cause I'm gaming, and NNEDI3 is less important than games performance. and my friend has 760TI too, he doesn't have any of the issues, and he is using NNEDI3, I know, I set his settings.
Whether you play MKV/MP4/AVI/whatever doesn't matter to madVR, what might matter is the video format: H264, MPEG2, etc., so tell us about that. I tried all AVC1, MKV, WEB-DL 1080p, 720p Bluray, all the above had the same issue.
Debug OSD stats (CTRL+J) might help debug the issue.

Again, as I said, the only thing I change is 970 from 7970, I left the settings the same, and all broke lose. So I cancel the only settings related to AMD in madvr, like the ones that says AMD only.

It's nothing in my computer or the settings, they worked perfectly. it still does, but NNEDI3 just doesn't work at all, it messes everything possible.

the CTRL + J shows everything correct.

The problems that happen are those :

Randomly flashing green screen on the video that goes away in less than a sec.
Randomly flashing black square or corrupted subtitles, sometimes they repeat or stay too long and you need to back foward to resync. ( Everything still happens with or without subtitles shown ).
Fast forwarding / Back forwarding / mouse location timeframe / all can cause the video to green screen, video freeze but audio continue, total video freeze. to fix the freeze I need to stop/play or click on the movie again.

What happens is that the Renderer Queue drops to 1-12 / 12 and present queue stays at 0-1 / 3

For some reason I'm not sure yet, cause I overclocked at the time only the GPU clock that made the GPU drop to 405mhz and stay stuck.
BUT I'm sure it's not the issue here, cause NNEDI3 still not possible to use with NO OVERCLOCK , the same issue STILL HAPPENS, and maybe NNEDI3 is what causing to the 2D clock to stay, I still need to check.

I Played Crysis 3 , Company of Heroes 2, I tested Unigine 4-5 times, I watched 3D Bluray movies with PowerDVD14. there were no issue that drop the performance like the NNEDI3 does, in no way.
I checked with OCCT for GPU errors, nothing shown before or after the problems when using NNEDI3.

I don't have Bluescreen, Flash Hardware Acceleration works perfect, CUVID works too.

before 2 hrs I just finished to watch the movie I tried to see using JINC and it worked perfectly, no green flashes, no subtitles corruption, no freeze, everything worked. that without overclock I tried to use NNEDI3 just before, and it did all the problems , including the slow mo renderer 1-12 / 12

If you still want here is CTRL +J when using JINC
The presentation glitches and dropped frames are because the Pause and Play + Full screen + window mode changes

On the screens I can see you're playing interlaced content. Are you sure it's not SVP somehow interfering with deinterlacing?
Have you tried playing progressive content to see if the issue persists?
This issue only happens with interlaced 1080p videos.

With the previous graphic driver I was using before, I could resolve the issue by closing SVP. Since upgrading to the latest driver, however, closing SVP still doesn't allow me to watch those videos. madVR has to be deactivated.

NNEDI3 not working applies to any video, and happened with both driver versions.

and there are so many bugs trying to watch MKV movies. black flashes, video is continuing rendering subtitles when paused and sometimes the video freeze and audio continues, sometimes it just doesn't continue at all and freeze on the last paused image, and sometimes it just freeze randomly when fast forward or back forward. and sometimes just low performance the renderer is doing 1-7 intead 6-7, and it just dropping frames non stop.

Using Potplayer + MADVR + LavFilters CUVID

So many video bugs I can't watch a movie properly. to fix the video I need to reopen it stop it or switch to JINC and it fix the slow down instant.

With 7970 same settings I didn't have a single issue

I had similar things going on with my 970 at first.

In the Nvidia control panel > 3D Settings > Manage 3D settings, add Potplayer in the Program Settings tab and set the Power management mode to Prefer maximum performance.

Cause I don't have it anymore now, I'm not sure if it was the Overclock which made it, or something else.

Is it possible to use madVR as a video processing filter? I'm asking this because when using stereoscopic player (for 3D) madVR is listed as a video processing filter, but when I selected it it didn't work... I have the idea that it would not work, but since it was listed... I wanted to use it for YCbCr->RGB conversion and 3DLUT correction, because the native one crops BTB and WTW, so, for now, I have to use ffdshow for that.

By the way, the first post seems to not be correct... it looks like some of the items are outside the [ code ] area...

some numbers look interesting the openCL copy numbers are a lot lower. but I would still say nothing has change at all. these test are not 100% stable.
don't take these numbers to serious I didn't even restarted the PC.

Interesting results. It is odd how every OpenCL is faster on 14.9, OpenCL copy quite a bit, but every Error Diffusion OpenCL is slower and only Error Diffusion DirectCompute interop is slightly faster. As you said all the Error Diffusion numbers should probably be thought of as the same.

The pure OpenCL test got faster while something else used by madVR's Error Diffusion got enough slower to have the result be about even?

If you do enter it in the bug tracker please include a way to reliably reproduce it. It is basically impossible for madshi to fix something if they cannot reproduce it. :)

Remember madVR is a free project done in madshi's "spare" time. If you want help you will need to put in the work on your side to figure out exactly what the problem is.

As a lot of people use a 970 with NNEDI3* (http://wiki.mikejung.biz/index.php?title=MadVR#How_to_Enhance_Video_Image_with_MPC-HC_and_MadVR_nnedi3_GTX_970) the information you provided so far is insufficient to start debugging. Remove as many variables as possible (e.g. try MPC-HC, no overclocking, etc.) to isolate the issue.

*no endorsement of this wiki implied, the settings do not make sense but NNEDI3 is working on a 970.

I'm using 344.80. I use MPC-BE instead of PotPlayer so I just adjust the power setting in the control panel for MPC-BE instead.

NNEDI3 works fine for me with MadVR +MPC-BE. I use it for luma doubling at 64 neurons.

I have an R9 290x and just installed Catalyst Omega 14.12 so I gave AMD Fluid Motion a go.:cool:

It did absolutely nothing. :rolleyes:

I used this file -> [Kuusou] Inou Battle wa Nichijou-kei no Naka de - 08 [C3418F73].mkv

Tested at a panning scene at 1:40. I did test other files, and still, nothing. However, I did not test any movies.

MPC-HC was set to EVR Custom Presenter. I think I got the settings correct. AMD demo mode can be turned on; it creates a red bar in the middle, so it's good as a sanity check. There must be some other problem elsewhere

Such a pity. I'm always looking forward to new, video smoothing features. Back to madVR.

EDIT: It might work with PowerDVD 14.

With my Windows 8.1; AMD FX-8350; R9 270X system... 13.12 still performs the best with madVR. I have my profiles setup to max out my GPU, for example, the 720p30 profile pushes the GPU to 90-91%... so if the driver package doesn't perform as well I will immediately see the dropped frames. I just tested the new Omega driver and it failed to match the 13.12 driver.

I don't know. I've never got any hiccups with any of the driver package. However, I'm more inclined towards the newer driver packages (14.9 and above, I think) since they fixed a monitor-sleeping bug and so monitors now sleep properly, with my card.

Though, my madVR only runs on a setting where I deemed that there are no noticeable difference to the eyes. I don't deal with NNEDI3 stuff since it doesn't work too well with ffdshow's aWarpSharp (it causes the lines to shimmer/look like they're moving). It's not like they run on every scaling feature maxed.

This is on Windows 7. I remembered getting all sort of hiccups on Windows 8 with Radeon HD 7850 though but I don't think that's madVR exclusive. It's one of the main reasons why I reverted back to Windows 7. I have not tried my R9 290x with Windows 8.

Don't bother waiting IMO, get the 750 TI it's boss. Overclock the memory too for a bit of a speed boost too barely changing the heat profile.

I can do 64 neurons with most stuff around 720 and 128 neurons under 480. And if I unlocked it's power constraints I could get a lot more, but I'm happy with how quiet it is and it's performance.
so I got this board (http://www.msi.com/product/vga/N750Ti-TF-2GD5OC.html), it can't do 64x NNEDI luma + J3 chroma + ED1 so I'm stuck with 32x(which is totally OK ^^), still it easily hits its power limit (http://www.imagebam.com/image/7ff291371234843) and has to constantly throttle down(what a failtastic idea to cap a 65W TDP GPU to 38W (http://cryptomining-blog.com/1014-how-to-increase-the-geforce-gtx-750-ti-power-target-limit/) :rolleyes:), no dropped frames though.

Agreed, I don't either.. I spent quite some time inspecting the screen close up to find a difference and I could find none, but Leeperry swore he could see a difference)
I did a much closer inspection at the pixel level and although what I did see looked nicer.. but its impact for imperceivable change (on my screen) makes it not worth enabling.
So I recalibrated several times(Sammy 3500:1 AMVA 32"/W7SP1), rolling gamuts, gamma curves, DVI/HDMI and HDMI/HDMI cables, HDMI inputs, messing with retarded options in the nvidia drivers such as scaling and content type, forcing 0-255 using madshi's app, ensuring that I get the right figures using "dispcal -R" and what-not...but I can only very barely see a difference between ED1 and ordered dithering with this 750Ti, I should also say that I find the PQ highly underwhelming :o

I might have been willing to make do with the slight hum of the 1K rpm fans when idle as it'll never increase under load(even though it makes no sense to cool down the GPU to 27°C) but I far prefer the PQ I get with this board (http://www.kitguru.net/components/graphic-cards/zardon/vtx3d-vchamp-hd7790-and-hd7850-review/4/) or this one (www.msi.com/product/vga/R9-270-GAMING-2G.html)(even though my sample of the latter glitched on NNEDI3 chroma (http://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=1681693&postcount=26496) for some reason).

The built-in DVB-T tuner of the TV also looks heaps better on HD content than this 750Ti to my eyes, but not as good as mVR with ED1 LL off a GCN GPU though.

I know ppl on the HCFR forum have always been raving about the superior PQ of AMD and I'm not writing this post to start a church war or anything like that as the difference is far beyond placebo to my eyes, a wild guess towards the technical reason would be that there's always been a "black box" between what mVR sends to the graphic drivers and what's being actually sent to the display.

They apparently work in 12bit, apply the LUT if need be and then have to dither back and encode to lossy TMDS. It might very well be that I far prefer the dithering algorithm used by AMD because colorimetry was perfectly identical in both cases so there's gotta be something else.

GREG1292 went through a completely different experience (http://forum.doom9.org/showpost.php?p=1667313&postcount=22907):
compared 7 with a sapphire 7870xt to the gtx-770 and preferred the GTX-770. Guess I will be sticking with 7 and Nvidia.
So YMMV more than ever, I rest my case that dithering algorithms in mVR are highly dependent on the display but they might also respond differently depending on the GPU maker/drivers.

With my Windows 8.1; AMD FX-8350; R9 270X system... 13.12 still performs the best with madVR.
Figures, thanks for the confirmation as the 13.12 work like a treat and wasting my time rolling graphic drivers is something I really hate, especially when I am quite sure it will ultimately fail.

Leeperry I am still using the GTX770 and latest nvidia drivers and could not be happier with madVr
as it runs so smooth for me. I am using a Runco VX2000D extreme dlp and a Panamorph uh480 on
a 127" scope screen and the picture is stunning. No need to upgrade gpu as Nvidia does a good job
of enabling or unlocking features and the picture continues to improve. Just want to give a shout out

It doesn't do the same as SVP. SVP is motion interpolation. AMD, as well as madVR, are not doing that. They instead blend frames. SVP has much higher quality.

Although NNEDI3 isn't working on Radeon HD 7660M, I got to experiment with it through AviSynth. Here's what I found.

For 288p low-quality videos, that are generally poorly encoded with lots of encoding artifacts, quadrupling the frames with NNEDI3 makes the artifact noise too sharp.

After doing lots of tests with various filters, here's what gave the best results: doubling with EEDI3, then doubling again with NNEDI3, then downscaling.

The thing with EEDI3 is that its algorithm hasn't been developed like NNEDI3 and is MUCH slower, but applying it first on the small picture isn't too bad.

It might be good to see EEDI3 in madVR, especially if its code gets optimized to run as fast as NNEDI3.

And, it would be good to get NNEDI3 to work on a Radeon HD 7660M :)

the new AMD fluid motion stuff is a frame interpolation that makes frames up (with all of it's artifact of course).

madVR SM has a totally different aim. it is simply trying to display a given frame rate on a given refresh rate. it is not trying to come up with new frames and it doesn't create error like interpolations like SVP or this AMD stuff. technically all of them are interpolations but only AMD and SVP try to create things that's doesn't exist.
