Does madVR not use the normal 3DLUT calibrations when HDR video is playing? It looks like they have no affect? I was trying to get a LUT to calibrate just BT2020, since I have a JVC projector. I tried HDR 3DLUT, but that seemed to completely changed my custom gamma curve.

it play better yes, but not so smoothly, maybe i have to ugrade cpu/motherboard and ram?
Please switch to fullscreen mode (ideally even fullscreen exclusive mode), turn the OSD (Ctrl+J) on, and then check during playback if the queues stay full all the time during playback, and whether the "dropped frames", "delayed frames" and "presentation glitches" counter keep increasing during playback. Or do they stay contant, once playback has been running for a couple of seconds?
FWIW, your display is running at 60.000Hz, while your movie has a framerate of 23.976fps. This can't be totally smooth. Maybe that's already what you're seeing? Try turning on "smooth motion" in madVR, does that help?
5) I'd like to add to my previous post that I was a little too much harsh with this new option. With low strengths it doesn't make sense to use it because it just misses some compression artifacts but with higher strengths it can be useful because it does help to retain some texture details that are otherwise blurred.
I'd suggest if you really want to remove the choice for this option to create low strength presets without it and high strength presets with it. If you think it's a good idea, let me know and I will do more.
Well, seems you had the same thought as I had. Now the big question is if the expert users in this forum can agree on the best setting for each strength?
Well, all I did was use the 32bit version...
Well, the last thing I can think of is to use external LAV. I managed to produce two hangs (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0ByfdfPvnoDuzWDUySEFpdUQ3aVk) (#14-15), which I added, but it was much harder now.
Thanks, now I get information for both MPC-HC and LAV, too! But only #15 is useful, #14 is not for some reason. Maybe you could add 2 more? According to the freeze report, the MPC-HC version you're using is "1.7.13.0", and LAV is "0.70.2.1". I'm not completely sure right now if this is the complete version information? Do MPC-HC or LAV show more complex/complete version information somewhere? I'll have to look into MPC-HC and LAV source code to fully understand what they were doing at the time of the freeze.
FWIW, I can't promise that any of this will help, but at least I'm going to try to figure out what's going on. Maybe I'll be able to, maybe not. Fingers crossed!
You said you were looking to remove the standard RCA version, so hence this is switching to the "not reduced texture detail" option as the default.
Ah, I understand now. Have you seen Neo-XP's and ABDO's posts, though? They don't seem to like the new option. So I'm not really sure what to do now.
Maybe the three of you and Werewolfy and everyone else (thank you guys) can find a way to agree on whether the "don't reduce texture detail" option should be enabled or disabled for every specific strength setting? As a reminder, the option will *definitely* go away. But I'm willing to make this option on/off for any specific strength setting, if you guys can agree on that somehow. I'll not work on different quality levels or adding finer strength steps before this is sorted out.
Using those strengths is more destructive than anything, trying to remove all block shapes when your entire frame is comprised of blocks I think is a bit foolish.
To each their own. With extremely blocked images like that, I prefer smoothing over blocky, but I'll keep that decision in the hands of Vapour/AviSynth guys. I want to give them at least the option to go crazy on deblocking settings, if they feel the need to do so for a couple extra bad frames.
Sorry, i did not catch the ambiguity. Just compared v0.92.7 to v0.92.4, old and previous are the same AS in v0.92.4 .
I find the new AS clearly better for movies and videos but worse for anime content of various quality. For that i wish the previous AS finds its way back. So how much better depends on the contenet.
Have you tried "linear light" on vs off for the new AS? I think with "linear light" off it's not so much different to the previous AS for Anime content? If you don't like the slightly stronger grain sharpening, you could add "reduce compression artifacts" strength 2, which would probably clean up the grain in Anime content? Please understand that I don't want a million different algorithm variants. That would only confuse the normal user. Furthermore, maintaining a lot of different algorithm versions is extra work for me.
I'm having some serious horizontal tearing on the top of the screen (tv) but only if I choose a refresh rate over 60hz (72hz for example) is there any way to fix this? I have aero enabled (windows 7), maybe is my tv the one causing the problem?
Could be the GPU or the TV, it's hard to say. Have you tried FSE mode? If the tearing also occurs in FSE mode, even after a reboot, that would point to the TV being at fault, but it's still no definite proof.
can MadVR be "forced" into thinking that a video is HDR (and apply the transfer function conversion accordingly)?
Not at the moment, unfortunately.
I have to route the video image through avisynth(plus) before I can project it on the screen. This is nicely working for SDR/Rec.709 but not for HDR.
Also, I am afraid avisynth(plus) can NOT pass the HDR MetaData to MadVR, so, detecting HDR based on MetaData seems to be impossible.
I believe FFMS2000 (https://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?t=174469) is able to transport HDR metadata, but of course ffdshow raw doesn't support it.
If there would be a way to "switch on" HDR->SDR conversion, it would save my life (I mean my projector's life :-)
I guess adding that wouldn't be too hard. I'll see what I can do...
You know what would be great? For Madvr to support audio rendering and some enthusiast start developing it by making it optimized for all the different audios out there. Im frustrated by having to change audio decoders and settings because the different audios are becoming worst every day.
Almost wanted to say "never going to happen", but you know, never say never. But still, it seems very unlikely right now that I would ever do that.

Depends on the HDR mode you've chosen. I don't have enough information to answer your question. Which setting have you chosen in the madVR "hdr" tab, with which sub-settings? If you have chosen "let madVR decide", does madVR actually switch your JVC into HDR mode, and is that what you want?

Is there a disadvantage to not using MadVR filters with 1:1 Ripped UHD content?
Would I really see much of a difference on already top quality content? At the moment I only use MadVR to pass through HDR.

reduce compression artifacts:
so we need to come to a decision whether to have "don't reduce texture detail" enabled or disabled. *however*, i'm willing to compromise by turning "don't reduce texture detail" on or off, depending on the selected strength. So e.g. We could have it off for strength 1-3, and have it on for strengths 4-12, or something like that.
What do you guys think?
its difficult choice, for Anime content, some times i forcd to use RCA*7 or *10 to clean the image, while "don't reduce texture detail" left little artifacts, and adding some RRN to fix it cost extra gpu power, and blur the image slightly, i really do not know, but i think get rid of "don't reduce texture detail" will be good for me, thanks for your effort @madshi.

NVIDIA 387.92 DRIVER WARNING
This has been touched apon already in this thread but the situation is a little worse than suggested. The problem is really quite simple, when playing HDR content the driver acts as expected and BT2020 is passed over HDMI. On stopping the playback of HDR the driver does not return to the standard RGB color space. This has happened to me twice with a GTX 980 card on windows 7 x64 and the 2nd time I looked at it more.
Once this situation has happened there is _NO WAY_ to turn off BT2020 going over the used HDMI port at the refresh rate used while HDR was playing. This means for example if you were playing HDR content at 23Hz or 24Hz, the only way to turn BT2020 off (after playback has stopped) is to change to a different refresh rate (25Hz, 50Hz, 60hz, etc).
Great you think a workaround.... Well no.... As soon as you go back to a 23Hz/24Hz refresh rate BT2020 is once again again passed over HDMI even if its not HDR. :( :( :(
The result is any future non HDR content played via madVR (or other) will have a picture that looks over saturated.
During testing I have found the following actions will not fix the situation.
- System reboot or cold boot.
- Disabling and re enabling the display.
- Unplugging and re plugging in the HDMI lead (with cold boot between).
The following will fix the situation.
- Plugging a different panel to the offending HDMI port and setting it to the offending refresh rate. Then reverting to the previous panel.
- Going back to 382.33 drivers. This worked for me though I did not try any other drivers.
I hope this info is helpfull to anyone thinking their picture is looking somehow weird. It took me a good few hours to work out this was the issue. I was getting quite worried that I had a fault on my AVR or OLED.

I think in win 10 there is a HDR option in the OS. You might be able to use that as a workaround fix although I have no way to confirm if thats the case.

Thank you so much for your reply madshi, I think too it's the tv fault.
Great work as always with the new version and the new denoise filters, maybe I will try to compare them with the one in ffdshow to see if is the time to say goodbye to ffdshow.

Excruciatingly I could make three. #16-19 (https://drive.google.com/open?id=0ByfdfPvnoDuzWDUySEFpdUQ3aVk) (17 and 18 are from the same hang but the latter is after the alert sound, when unusually the player was still hung)
I think MPC-HC has some anti-hang mechanism that activates when I hear the windows alert sound, which usually resolves the hang. Not always. Especially when I try to interact with the GUI it doesn't activate, but then I can't make a freeze report with madVR either.
As for the version information I don't know, I don't use mpc normally. LAV it seems displays less detailed information (0.70.2) in its settings windows. :)
Whether it turns out to be fruitful or not thanks for the effort! I've been complaining to the Potplayer/ProgDVB devs about the hangs (maybe even in the LAV thread) but none of them were willing to investigate.

I cant see that option but i also have no 4k HDR capable screen. So probably its not your case but ive tested a HDR HEVC 10 bit 2160 downscaled to 1080p and BT.2020 was used and then played normal 8bit avc and returned to BT.709. :sly:
Almost wanted to say "never going to happen", but you know, never say never. But still, it seems very unlikely right now that I would ever do that.

Maybe we can all decide on the amount of RCA and make a low, medium, and high preset for them similar to debanding.
That would be a lot easier than a scale of 1-10, or is it 12 now?
What would be more useful for RCA would be to have madvr detect MPEG-2 and apply RCA medium, while if it detects AVC it applies low, and probably none for HEVC since it's not needed.
That would of course be with the ON setting, where it would detect and apply RCA to remove compression artifacts. That's the only logical way to process the image in my opinion, as just having one setting for all codecs is essentially useless since HEVC doesn't need it at all. It's mainly MPEG-2 that needs to be deblocked. I guess MPEG-4 needs it somewhat too, but to varying degrees.
I don't know...that's just my 2 cents.

Understandable, if it has to go, it has to go. I have no shortage of sharpening options and artefact reduction compromises so it's fine. Yes, i've tried, i perfer no linear light, it helps just a bit.
However i'm sincerely seeing AS being different from from one another (where the line is drawn and attention to fine detail):

Ah, I understand now. Have you seen Neo-XP's and ABDO's posts, though? They don't seem to like the new option. So I'm not really sure what to do now.
Looking again the levels 1-2 with DRTD it actually does very little, I'm happy on sticking with original setting of 1 or 2. Surprisingly 2 with DRTD almost looks softer than without it? I'm not fussed what happens here now.

Yeah I saw that earlier too, the old AS darkens lines wonderfully, really helps with lower res anime. Since I'm using Avisynth on the lower res stuff I can just use Hysteria to darken lines a touch, but maybe madshi can add a line darkener to madVR himself sometime to help the situation.

It probably blew away your display driver altogether. It certainly removed the Nvidia drivers for me (replacing them with some version from windows update). After a big update like this I suggest running Display Driver Uninstaller to do a clean reinstall of the latest drivers.

AS Feedback) So I've spent some time with all these new algorithms. Lets start off with AS. I prefer the current AS for real life content. The old one was unusable. I don't like a lot of it, I'm running with a .2 strength on my 720p profile. I do not like AS with LL, softens/blurs the image ever so slightly.
The old AS was better for anime as it helped enhance dark lines and edges, however it was horrible for non anime. I never used it in the past as I don't watch much anime so, my preference is the new one.
Madashi you could always keep both, one as the anime AS and one as the real life AS, lol. ;) That would probably make some users here happy.
I'd suggest removing LL I don't see any use for it.

Madashi, RCC is great, thanks for all the new updates! :)
RCC Feedback) My default strength for RCC is 2 for 720, 1 for 1080 and 3 for decent SD content. Anime guys may hate RCC but for real life content it is awesome! I'm not sure why it goes up to a strength of 12, if you need to go that far you might as well be watching a vhs, lol.
I'm currently NOT using the don't reduce texture feature, maybe it can be tweaked slightly. With it on it does help preserve detail but, it also preserves artifacts. :(
To compensate for the slight loss of detail I'm running RCA with AS and for the first time since you released NGU I've turned enhance detail back on at a very limited .1 - .2 strength.
I notice no difference when checking the chroma option
RCA Feedback) I'm only using RCA for crappy SD sources. I'm not sure why you would use it at a strength of 1 or 2 as it totally destroys a good source and 1-2 is not effective enough on a BAD source. For poor quality videos I'm currently using it at a strength of 3 or above.

If that follow what I did is open PowerDVD 17 with 3D movie, it said your 3D hardware only supports the viewing of 3D movies in full screen mode. so I forgot 3D was not enabled, I get inside nvidia control panel and enabled 3D , it opened 3D wizard and didn't crash while powerdvd was still opened. so that's it. maybe it was Windows issue eventually lol..

Yes, I suppose I can add a setting between 2 and 3.
I don't really see >6 being too useful so how about middle-ground steps between the current 1-6 to go 1-12 please? Or go 1-24 if you must provide highest strengths to Vaporsynth users.
The "don't reduce texture detail" option might not be properly named. That's what the option *tries* to do, but it also results in some compression artifacts not being reduced. So it has advantages and disadvantages.
Yeah I got that but unchecking blurs the picture IME, even @1.
What would be more useful for RCA would be to have madvr detect MPEG-2
While we're at it, I kinda wish mVR would use proper chroma alignment for MPEG-1 but I guess it's very low priority so until then I gotta force MPEG-1 to use ffdshow and output RGB32 :o

When mpc-hc start playing UHD HDR video, using madvr in window mode it say "HDR", but when i double click and use full windows/exclusive mode, the "HDR" vanish, go out, bye bye.....this is normal?

Same with powerdvd.

that's not how this works. a HEVC source can be easily in need of this. while it is even possible to encode in mpeg2 without the need of these features.
The type of blocking its designed for is not quite common with HEVC. HEVC is more likely to blur on low bitrate encodes then block. Of course you could transcode a low-quality mpeg2 source to HEVC, but you only have yourself to blame if you do that =p

How would I go about creating a 3dlut for 4K HDR videos, that would take advantage of my SDR television's (panny st60) native color gamut? I have a colorimeter/spectro/calman and have played around with it some, but i can't figure out what the correct way to do this would be. Any ideas?

no question. HEVC and AVC both have a very effective deblock filter and both will rarely if ever generate blocking at least in the hands of an "good" encoder. that doesn't change that AVC broadcast has usually blocking in it don't know if the professionals that disable the in loop filter for broadcast are to blame or if it comes from signal errors both should apply to HEVC too.
never underestimate the skills of a professional encoder I can show you a relative new BDs with ~20 mbit that has unbelievable blocking in it and no they are not using mpeg2 and i can show you even worse things on older discs...

Im sorry, i should have explained; I have no issues with generating 3Dluts for MadVR using Calman Enthusiast. It created an excellent 3Dlut for SDR content. I am just confused on what what my targets should be for HDR, should I be trying to created a 3dlut for rec 2020?
I have used DisplayCal in the past for 3dluts, but it seems to have trouble with nailing down near-blacks on a plasma. Calman does a better job, i am just not entirely sure how this all needs to be configured to get a 3dlut that will take advantage of the extended gamut for HDR videos.

i don't know if calman supports a HDR -> SDR conversation 3D LUt.
madVR support both HDR -SDR 3D LUT and HDR-> HDR 3D LUt's.
but what i know is selecting a different target is not enough.
edit: well you could create a SDR bt 2020 3d lut and run this but madVR can do better HDR->SDR 3DLUT.

I can't get HDR switching to work in 1709 after upgrading from 1703 + nVidia 387.92 (was working last night). I tried a clean re-install of the last nVidia driver (385.69) and made sure my settings were nVidia color, but still doesn't work.
I'm going to rollback to 1703 unless someone here can confirm it's working for them.
I've been struggling with several combinations the last week, since (all of a sudden, probably a TV FW upgrade) switching to HDR resulted in a purple video image. I can work-around this problem by toggling the TV OFF & ON again.
Here's my results with several drivers on Win 1709 with an 1050Ti card:
378.92-desktop-win10-64bit-international-whql
No HDR option in windows, unusable.
382.33-desktop-win10-64bit-international-whql
Toggle HDR ON/OFF on Video Start/Stop works fine, but purple video / wrong colorspace
384.76-desktop-win10-64bit-international-whql
Toggle HDR ON/OFF on Video Start/Stop works fine, but purple video / wrong colorspace
385.41-desktop-win10-64bit-international-whql
Toggle HDR ON/OFF on Video Start/Stop works fine, but purple video / wrong colorspace
387.92-desktop-win10-64bit-international-rs3-whql
HDR doesn't turn OFF after video stop, but this is the only driver that gives me good colors. Unfortunately unusable because it doesn't switch HDR ON/OFF properly.
So i'm sticking with 385.41 for now
As a sidenote: After installing the 1709 update, my desktop colors were really dark. I got this solved by running Display Color Calibration.

that doesn't change that AVC broadcast has usually blocking in it ... should apply to HEVC too.
thats true.

- change the nvidia power setting to adaptive, same thing...shuttering
- checking GPU-Z if the PCIe speed is at least x16 2 yes, but when play all gpu ram is used, maybe this is the problem?
- reduced the render queue to 6 and 4, same thing...shuttering
Other tips:
- Try reducing your decode ('CPU') queue too. When using DXVA Native, the decode queue is kept in graphics RAM, so setting it lower could help. Hardware decoding on the Pascal cards is so fast that you don't really need a very high decode queue anyway, it fills up nearly instantly. Try something like 10.
- Close all other programs when playing a movie. Any open program uses video RAM for its application windows textures.
- If it still doesn't work, try this with DXVA Native: Present queue 4, Render queue 6, Decode queue 8.
- Did you try Windowed mode? It works quite well on my 1050 Ti on Windows 10.
(Edit) - Probably not linked to your issue, but I see you have not enabled VP9 hardware decoding. Is there a reason for this? Your 1050 can decode VP9.
You know what would be great? For Madvr to support audio rendering and some enthusiast start developing it by making it optimized for all the different audios out there. Im frustrated by having to change audio decoders and settings because the different audios are becoming worst every day. What do you need to change? What is becoming worse? I find audio decopding to be pretty bulletproof these days.

I am just confused on what what my targets should be for HDR, should I be trying to created a 3dlut for rec 2020?
As huhn suggested, you don't have to do anything else: leave your native gamut 3dlut configured in madvr and it will take care of the rest!
Thanks Madshi!

I assume you are using Nvidia Control Panel to change colors right?
You change color in Resolution tab?
I wonder if none of you had trouble trying to switch from RGB to Ycbcr before?
I needed to do some weird rituals for the drivers to assume RGB FULL color. Restarting OS. Changing other options in Nvidia Control Panel. And as i never trust this driver i always check if RGB Full is selected on my Nvidia Control Panel before i watch a movie. :sly:
I remember AMD was worst.
My tip is if you get a driver that works wonderful for what u do daily u should avoid any updates. And as for windows 10 updates i have it turned off by default on services.msc. When i remember i turn on. See the info about the update and Update or not. Then OFF again.
What do you need to change? What is becoming worse? I find audio decopding to be pretty bulletproof these days.
It depends. Dolby Digital Plus from amazon prime streams is awfull and very badly mixed most of the times. :(

Hopefully someone can help
Following:
HTPC running Kodi 17.4 DSPlayer + madVR
Intel i3
Nvidia GT 1030
4GB RAM
Connected to Denon AVR X1200
Beamer Acer M550 4K HDR connected to Denon
Used HDMI cables are fine and support all i need
I can set 4k resolution in NVCC
60Hz but only RGB Full @8Bit
HEVC Playback works fine but HDR seems very dark
Beamer is switching to 4K 60Hz and recognize HDR automatically
I can stop a video file and start another one without issues.
I can also set 1080p 60Hz RGB Full with 12Bit in NVCC
I can play one HEVC 4K HDR file
Beamer is switching to 4K 60Hz and recognize HDR automatically
I can stop the file but i can't play another one
If i start another file Beamer is Switching to 4K 60Hz HDR, but i get back on the desktop and there is just a black square about 25% over my desktop. Have to kill Kodi with Taskmanager.
It seems there is a problem while switching the resolution after playing one file. I also played around with exclusive full screen, but that did not help.
Is there a resolution for dark HDR image quality if Desktop is set to 4k resolution?
Is there a way to fix the second playback issue for 4K files if desktop resolution is set to 1080p?

@madshi
These new algorithms pretty darn good for image processing:
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/121039
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/121038
http://screenshotcomparison.com/comparison/121040
I think you should release a tool or even better a paint.net plugin for these, they're worthy of it. I couldn't get a palatable result result for these images with paint.net filters ( even including some third party plugins)
Ironically I don't find them very practical for video, because even these photos took several minutes of trial and error, videos would take even longer and I'd have to optimize for ever video (or at least ones that are not related to each other). Also my GPU is not beefy enough to run these too in real time.

if someone confirm that my hardware is ok, i'll continue to try, if no my hardware need an upgrade!
maybe "EVGA GTX1060 Scheda Grafica da 6 GB" + "new CPU and motherboard"!
PS:
On my tv, lg 65b6v i set "HDMI ULTRA HD Deep Colour" option
when HTPC start is already in HDR mode.
When mpc-hc start playing UHD HDR video, using madvr in window mode it say "HDR", but when i double click and use full windows/exclusive mode, the "HDR" vanish, go out, bye bye.....this is normal?
I try with madvr, native, copy back, etcc...same thing.
If i dont use madvr, then HDR is used in full windows/exclusive mode too!
Same with powerdvd.
suggestions?
thx all for your help :)

Well, seems you had the same thought as I had. Now the big question is if the expert users in this forum can agree on the best setting for each strength?
I did some tests and for my part I prefer strength 1-2 without "Don't reduce texture detail" activated because I can't see better details preservation with these low strenghts but I definitely see more compression artifacts.
For strength 3-10, I prefer when this option is activated, it does help to retain some details.
Strength 3 is quite debatable though... It depends if you value more perserving details or reducing compression artifacts. I switched on and off a lot of times but each time, I've found that I have a slight preference for "Don't reduce texture detail" activated in this case.
Strength 11-12 is so high that this option doesn't seem to make a difference so I woudn't activated if it aims very very blocky sources and if it could misses some artifacts. It's just a guess though I don't have sources to really test these extreme strengths.

Hi madshi, unfortunately I have not conducted organized tests. But, as I mentioned initially, the higher settings on RCA and RRN make wonders on badly compressed old anime (talking about less than 100MB for 20mins episode). As such, I hope that whatever setting you'll end up making available on a permanent basis will keep really low quality sources in mind.
Thanks.
Edit: also regarding Fall Windows Update... I am on Business Branch and I've opted for deferring feature updates up to 365 days. But, really, Microsoft is doing its worst nowadays to make me hate their business practices.

Check this (https://mega.nz/#!vNonVDBR!iEjopF1VnUKhQmBM3J1lPQr2Tv_NOQGk0Nt2mUHS62E) out, cut from a particularly low quality release of '94 cartoon, The Tick.
Personally I feel 11 and 12 are so heavy that DRTD should be enabled, I can't imagine any scenario where having it off would be beneficial. Even with the above video being almost as bad as they come I still think the absolute limit I would ever use on that is 10, above that as resemblance of lines/objects pretty much disappear. 3 and above with DRTD has my vote.

Yeah, think that's what I've been seeing. I have my screen set to 5 minutes before it blanks, if it sits there for a certain amount of time, madVR never recovers (picture is frozen) and I have to shutdown MPC-BE and start again.
A few nights ago I saw the screen blank and within a few seconds got the picture back up and madVR played fine. madshi, it looks like you may need to look at a way of re-establishing the connection for proper playback when this happens.

with RCA@1 DRTD doesn't look nearly as soft but also removes less artifacts indeed so it's a mixed bag, I guess you'd need to work your magic again and refine it please :p
