where did you toggle this? in madvr (devices -> monitor -> properties) madvr control + shift + alternative + i or in lav filter.

Luma resampling refers to expanding video level (16-235) to PC level (0-255), and as we can easily see that the procedure produces fractional numbers which even HDMI 1.4 can not carry. In order to send luma through HDMI, fractional numbers are rounded to integers.
Obviously there are several problems with such algorithm:
1) BTB and WTW is cut off after luma is expanded.
2) Banding is introduced (as the screenshot below shows). See the above example, the transition from 19-20 is mapped to 3-5. The luma information outside video range (0-16 referred to as BTB and 235-255 referred to as WTW) are important though we don’t normally see them in a movie. IMO they provide the following values:
It gives us the baseline when we calibration the brightness and contrast of our display.
It shows that the video luma is not cut off/expanded along the video pipeline.
Some movies have contents with luma value above 235, and as a result it’s recommended to reserve white up to 240 in order to see them.
Finally my suggestions are:
Avoid luma expansion/compression if possible. It’s perfect that our HTPC outputs 0-255 without expanding luma and our display cuts BTB and WTW.
If luma conversion cannot be avoided (most cases), make sure that dithering is enabled to reduce banding. We can use FFDshow with dithering enabled and HQ RGB conversion or MadVR to achieve this.""

Sure, that's a very valid question! Having HD 3000 as a primary card of sorts means the 7870 is in idle mode for about 80% of the time I spend before my computer, surfing the net, managing files and writing emails. That results in much lower power consumption and heat dissipation inside my tower. Also, quicksync is readily available to lav decoder without resorting to tricks when HD 3000 is active for video playback.
So, what happens if you add your player to Virtu MVP as a dMode app? I have the opposite setup and madVR doesn't like iMode. I use the "fake display" trick to get LAV to use QuickSync, but I only use hardware decoding when the CPU is running Handbrake at full throttle. Normally I use software decoding, with my GTX 660 handling the video rendering.

Are there any plans to have an SVP like algorithm built into madVR? I was thinking about testing it but I'm wary that it will interfere with madVR's processing chain for the worse.

I think madshi has said before that he has no plans to implement SVP-type framerate-doubling in madVR.

Don't believe everything you find on the web.
Converting YUV to RGB already produces fractional numbers, expanding 16-235 to 0-255 at the same time doesn't make it any worse, in fact it could potentially even make it better since the destination range is slightly larger.
Output of 0-255 is the best setup with madVR, if your TV supports it.

if your display only supports 16-235 you can set your amd to unlimited and put madvr to 16-235.
in this case the tv gets 0-255 but cut it and everything is fine
it will mostlikely change it to 0-255 it self after this...

AMD cards use 10-bit LUTs and may send a 10-bit signal to your display, but it's still coming from an 8-bit input.

"RGB32, 8 bit, RGB" on your screenshot is not madVR output, it's madVR input. That means that decoder performs such conversion and it's not the best way.
Check that 10-bit 4:4:4 colorspaces are checked in LAV decoder settings.

Sounds like you are using xy-vsfilter, which doesn't support 4:4:4 10-bit.

Kmplayer and/or Virtu doesn't like it and I get a black screen during playback either in windowed or full screen mode. :/
Now that you mention it, I'll try with other players and report back what happens.

No similar problem with the VMR9 renderer for example.

I'm using MPC-HC and madVR to play movies on my 133" screen. I'm seeing some very faint border issues inside the picture frame, it seems like there's some kind of faint inner frame just inside the madVR window, it seems to start exactly two pixels from the bottom of the screen where there's a distinct line/border (haven't verified the pixel count at the other side borders). When viewed from a far it seems like there's slight bending/blurring of the picture frames inside the actual frames. This happens with different aspect ratios and I can't see how my projector would cause this.
Is it possible some madVR processing causes the issue, so that the pixels close to the borders of the image aren't processed the same way as the others? I got some images but I had trouble getting my camera focused so they're blurry, can try to post them or better images if needed.

i have a panasonic G20 and i set the display mode on madvr to 1080p23, 1080p24, 1080p50, 1080p59 and 1080p60 (my tv support all) as soon i play movie tv change the refresh rate but i have huge drop frames on madvr ( ctrl + J ). my gpu is a gt630m and only 50% load.
if i remove all display modes from madvr, movies play without any frame drop. i really want to see how smooth a movie will be at 1080p24 but everytime i try it i have huge drop frames, so i still see movies at 1080p60.
do i need enable anything special on madvr to enable 1080p23/24 withou huge drop frames?
btw my panasonic have some 24p option that i can enable but that thing is horrible, nothing smooth so i really want see how good is madvr 1080p24.

Couldnt find the answer via google so heres the question. When smooth motion is activated i get the smoothed video, its better than anything i tried and I tried a few methods. Motion is constant, not like in all others skippy. But what botters me is how the picture is i dont know.. doubled? U can see it very clearly on the edges of objects, and im not talking about 24/25/30 frame doubling which is normal, i get that stuff. I see it even on true 60 fps video. Theres just that little afterimage, very clear ghosting. I tried to use different upscalers and all the other setting that have impact on picture in madvr but with no luck. Any ideas, anyone has seen what im talking about? I took some printscreens of my 60fps recorded blur test, those are when 'SM' is on and off of course.

I understand that is how smooth motion works.
Each frame is displayed for the same amount of time. If it needs to be displayed for 41.67 ms (24 fps) but using screen refreshes at 16.67 ms (60 fps) it displays the frame for two refreshes and blended into the next frame at 50%. This is "synced" to the refresh rate so, given that the refresh rate is never exactly 60 Hz and video is 24/1001 fps, the pattern of blends isn't actually 100%, 100%, 50% but more like 9.7%, 100%, 100%, 40.55% and continuously changing.
This generates lots of blended frames but given how humans see we only notice it as a slight blurring of the image, or a slight reduction in "sharpness", and much preferred to judder in my opinion.
Edit: Oh and the partial %'s are totally made up by me to illustrate the example. I have no idea what percentages madshi is actually using, it might be more complex than my simple 50% time = 50% blend.

I used to use SVP, but I gave up on it. Too many adjustments required for wonky source video, and half the time I couldn't get it to work without artifacts. I just put madVR on the highest recommended settings and get a beautiful picture, even though it's not quite as beautiful as SVP at its best.

SM is only need for 24fps media to me. Only there I get the wonky playback on each renderer/sync/etc config. 25fps/50hz, 30fps/60hz play smooth as butter everywhere. And the frame doubling is visible even on the 25/30/60fps media, its making it noticibly worse. 60fps looks like 30 fps without SM.

You forgot to tell us on what GPU and display combination? Because IME a slow responding LCD panel really makes FRC noticeably blurry.

just a stupid question. if my tv can do 24hz do i need enable smooth motion? when i put 1080p24 on display modes on madVR when i see a movie at 24fps (23.976) the screen change from 60hz to 24hz. 1080p24 movies are to be seen on tv with 60hz or 24hz? i suppose 24hz is the right option but i dont know much about this 24p stuff :)
do i still need use SM or SM is just to use when your TV dont do 24hz?

If your display can do 23.976/24 Hz natively (i.e. at integer multiple) then using that should be the best option. Smooth Motion is a helpful tool for those using PC monitors, which typically only support 60 Hz and thus cannot display 24/25/50 fps material without judder.

i have a receiver that can decode HD sound. after i research a bit i found that i cant have a perfect 24p experience without any framedrop with reclock and at same time bitstream HD sound to my receiver.
so as far i can see i have only two options:
1) enable reclock and have perfect 24p experience but loose HD sound ( almost every movie i see have dts-hd sound )
2) dont use reclock and have some framedrops but gain dts-hd sound from receiver.
i found another option where i could download this "dtsdecoderdll.dll" so can lav filter decode HD sound, but i dont know if the HD sound decode from LAV have the same quality from HD sound decode from my denon receiver.

The only reason you need Reclock for a "perfect 24p experience" is if you're using PAL DVDs that need to be time-stretched from 25 fps to 24 fps. Otherwise, you just need to make sure your GPU is outputting 23.976p as closely as possible (tweakable with nVidia, not sure about AMD or Intel).

i have a nvidia gt630m. how can i tweak those 23.976? on movies madvr say display 23.972 Hz, that is the reason why i get some framedrops right?

the first SS basically is my display, 1 frame drop every 3minutes and display saying 23.972Hz. so i need to create a custom resolution as in second SS right? this will solve the problem, since 1 framedrop every 9h is more than perfect.
that custom resoltuion on 2nd SS will not be dangerous for my laptop or panasonic TV? i really want a true 24p playmode but dont want screw my laptop or TV in process :)

At 23.971 Hz you'd get frame skips every 3 minutes or so (though you may not notice all of them depending on the scene being displayed). You need to create a custom resolution in the nVidia Control Panel to try to improve this, and it's essentially hit or miss as to what settings you need. I think madshi said that the refresh rate displayed by MadVR is approximate and not necessarily correct to 3 decimal places anyway so this causes more problems. I might be wrong on this though, hopefully he can clarify. Obviously the number of frame drops/repeats is accurate so you can play a whole film and see how many there are at the end to truly test.

No. If your TV can't handle a certain setting, it'll merely refuse to display an image or nVidia Control Panel will report that the display "rejected" the image. After all, it's very minor tweaks we're talking about, it's not like trying to force 50 Hz on a 60 Hz-only monitor. Laptop screens are generally crap and I've never tried custom refresh rates on them so can't really comment.

Are you sure it's not all the edges being cut off? Could be that overscan settings change when the resolution and refresh rate change. If not, try not to change the settings too much. A single number increase/decrease will likely have a relatively large effect. I know that increasing the total horizontal pixels on my TV creates dodgy lines everywhere so I steer clear of that setting. ;)
As an example, with my GTS 250 the closest I can get (with the 15 minutes of effort I was willing to put in) is 23.97630 Hz, resulting in a frame repeat every 50 minutes. For this, I created a custom resolution with the default settings for 1080p/23.976 (which gave me 23.978xx Hz) but increased the total vertical pixels by one. I just checked and this measured refresh rate was shown by both MadVR and EVR so I assume it's accurate.

yes is that problem, edges being cut off. as soon i put any custom resolution, even if i choose 24hz and set the rest automatic the screen overscan and than i cant see the edges of windows.
dont know what i can do to correct this since when i try to resize the screen on nvidia options, say is unavailable for custom resolutions.
seem i will not have that perfect 24p experience soon.
after some research i read AMG gpu have a better 23.976 experience compared with nvidia.

sorri i edit my previous post. wasnt 2Hz but 24hz.
tv is a plasma panasonic g20 and have a 16:9 overscan option that is disable.
i forget to say my laptop is conect to a receiver denon 2309.
laptop-> receiver -> panasonic g20.

my AVR doenst change anything on video but i connect my laptop directly to my panasonic tv and that overscan from custom resolution is the same.
next try i will check if my panasonic overscan turn on when i change to custom resolution. if not than i dont know what i can do more. maybe sell my laptop and buy a new one with AMD gou ( seem stupid since i sell my last laptop 2 weeks ago that had a hs5650 xD )

Its a S775 E7200 + nvidia gts450 and dell ips monitor and sony hx750. Notice that i took printscreen picture, not with camera. That doubled frame is wrongly 'rendered' by madvr, and it should not be in my opinion.

I noticed the same thing happening on my desktop with madVR, it was just harder to notice since the screen is a lot smaller, 24" vs 133". The above is a screenshot (print screen) with a portion of the lower border (resized to 500%).

LAV has its own indicator (albeit harder to get to). Make sure you set tray icons to enabled, then play a file with a DTS-HD MA track. Double-click on the LAV Audio tray icon and go to the Status tab. It should say "DTS-HD MA" as the codec. Bit-streaming just causes headaches in my experience; if the software I'm using can decode everything properly, and my receiver has no issues with 7.1 LPCM, I have no reason to use bit-streaming. I think LAV decodes Dolby TrueHD without third-party plugins, plus FLAC, etc.

yes, i change the total vertical pixels to 1126. with 1125 i get display rate around 23.978Hz.

LAV has its own indicator (albeit harder to get to). Make sure you set tray icons to enabled, then play a file with a DTS-HD MA track. Double-click on the LAV Audio tray icon and go to the Status tab. It should say "DTS-HD MA" as the codec. Bit-streaming just causes headaches in my experience; if the software I'm using can decode everything properly, and my receiver has no issues with 7.1 LPCM, I have no reason to use bit-streaming. I think LAV decodes Dolby TrueHD without third-party plugins, plus FLAC, etc.
but that way on my receiver the blue ligh from HD audio will not turn on right? and will not appear "dts-master" on receiver screen but something else right?

nope... LAV is decoding DTS-HD MA to PCM, so the receiver is getting PCM... so the light won't turn on..

The new version 19 of JRiver Media Center has a DTS output stream feature that should work for you. Check their support forum for details.

i think im go with your advice because yesterday i saw a full movie with lot of dark scenes ( MAMA was the movie name) and the dark scenes were all messed, horrible indeed, couldnt see any details on dark scenes just black.
so i stopped the movie and did some testes always with the same image and this is what i get:
1) with 24Hz (not custom refresh) i get amazing image quality from my panasonic
2) with 24 Hz custom refresh i get crap image quality especially on dark scenes, but in general colour are oversatured
3) with 24 hz custom refresh rate AND change on madvr output lvl for TV i get the same amazing image quality as on 1)
if i change for PC levels dark scene have 0 details, but on 24 Hz ( not custom refresh) if i set madvr output to PC levels i get amazing image quality and if i change to tv levels colours are all washout and is terrible.
i think custom refresh rates are messing up with madVR setting.
with custom refresh rate 24Hz and change 1 in total vertical pixels i get almost perfect 23.976Hz but that add 1 vertical pixel make something very anoying on top border of display.
im a bit tired with all this tests and tries to get perfect 24p and the blue dts-hd logo on my receiver.
i think im just go with your advice, forget the blue logo and just use LAV audio decoder + dtsdecoderdll.dll + reclock so i can get HD sound, perfect 24p experience and perfect image quality.
i will not gonna loose any quality on sound right? will just change on my screen receiver from " dts-hd master" to " PCM" and loose the blue light logo right?
so basically with LAV audio decoder + dtsdecoderdll.dll, no one really need receivers with HD decoders right?

As I understand it, the way Reclock works is that it resamples the audio to match the video. So if the video is playing back at 23.978 Hz instead of 23.976 Hz, then the video and audio will just be played back slightly quicker than normal so you won't get dropped/repeated frames. As long as you choose the best resampling algorithm I highly doubt you would be able to tell the difference between the original audio and the resampled audio. Aside from this, letting LAV Audio decode Dolby TrueHD or DTS-HD MA will result in the same PCM stream as letting your AVR do it, it just gets done a step earlier. It is possible that some receivers have different settings available for different input types though, so this is something to check.
Also note that the reason your custom 24 Hz refresh rate makes the colours over-saturated is because it's forced to 0-255 output. Your normal refresh rates were presumably using 16-235. You can fix this by changing the MadVR output, as you did. I need to use EVR on my HTPC so the only fix for me is to use YCbCr output instead of RGB. However, if you're getting a dodgy row of pixels then I guess this method isn't an option for your particular TV.

Normal? Movies are filmed in 24.
