without further notice they all have an exploration date until a different if not worse system will replace that.

Hi, I dont think that is right, I have mine setup as follows.

ARC port on TV is connected to ARC port on receiver, then receiver input is connected to pc.

Are you having problems ?

look up profiles.

vulkan is not plain faster than DX9.
it's different madVR uses mostly shader and these don't benefit massively from vulkan which uses a completely different shader language so everything has to be rewritten for most likely small gains at best.

there are reasons to do that for feature like dx12 or at least 11 but this is a lot of work.

cant figure out where to autoforce bt2020 without having to use a hotkey yet still, im talking bout forcing, also shame bout vulkan not working like that with shaders ....was just throwing out some ideas how to get more gains for rendering without quality loss, btw whys there no discord server yet for this place....im sure that would be pretty welcome , dont ya guys think? the forums are abit....archaic lol

bt 2020 can be forced with nvidia cards and you can use a profile to do that automatically like with HDR force BT 20ß20 else use bt 709.
you fidn the option under calibration.

what does a discord give what a forum can't.

don't get the wrong idea this piece of software is not in the hight of it's development.

I think what sexus want to do is to load bt.709 files as bt.2020 files. This will of course make the blues bluer and the reds redder, but if that’s what he wants then why not?
I’m not sure how to do that with profiles. What I do is tick or untick the “send bt.2020” checkbox based on the files colourspace (not just if it’s hdr).

Newb question:

I am on windows 10 and using madVR with MPC-BE. Is there a way to get madVR to trigger my JVC projector to switch to HDR mode when playing back a 4K HDR file? Is there something I need to name the file or anything else in windows that needs to be set? I'm using an intel NUC as my computer.

Sorry if this question has been asked a million times.

Open madVR settings, edit your active device and set "passthrough HDR to display" + "send HDR metadata to the display"

Thanks for the bit of info! Unfortunately that didn't work for me. Somehow the data is not being passed through to the JVC Projector to tell it to switch. The JVC Projector (NX7) is set to Auto mode but doesn't switch to HDR when using mpc-be, lav and madVR even though it works fine switching when I play Netflix 4K HDR using my Netflix App on the Samsung player. Is there something about windows 10 that is causing the issue perhaps?

your intel GPU most likely.

madVR does not support auto HDR for Intel GPUs.
madVR is long dead.
Use MPC Video Renderer or Kodi for this.

Thanks for the feedback. The Intel GPU is most likely the culprit then. Will try MPC Renderer to see if it makes a difference.

EDIT - Tried MPC Video Renderer and the HDR flag gets properly sent to the Projector and it switches. So the issue is likely as said Intel GPU and madVR issue. Since the Intel GPU with MPC Video Renderer passes it fine.

exactly this! would appreciate if this feature could be implemented without needing to press a force bt2020 hotkey

if you want to ruin your content by removing 50% or more information in it you just select bt709 and select report bt 2020.

you could also just run a shader that does this...
or 3D LUT or what ever.

Rename your video file like this: "<video name> primaries=bt2020 matrix=bt2020.<extension>"

interesting ....there gotta be a better way to do this tho ....thats kinda ridiculous having to rename your files like that , thats the only way to force BT2020 besides using the hotkey? i hope not

Since I'm using an Intel GPU and madVR, what is the best way to make sure HDR is being played properly and handled by my JVC Projector?

What I have been doing is -
1) Setting madVR - "passthrough HDR to display"
2) Setting - "send HDR metadata to the display"
3) Manually switching my Projector to HDR mode since Intel GPU and madVR doesn't do automatic switching as I've been told.

Would the above steps be accurate?

I was in doubt because I was wondering - should I be switching the windows desktop manually to HDR on first? And then with the above settings in place will the correct data will be sent to the projector? I just want to make sure the correct data is being sent to the projector regardless if I have to manually switch certain things on either on the desktop or the projector.

Thanks for any input and advice.

Either way, incorrect metadata will be sent to the projector.

Is there any other solution/workaround available to me in my current setup?

In mpv you can just apply --vf=format to the picture, so you can retag actual BT.2020 primaries to be BT.709 or Display P3 or whatever. Not that is a right thing to do. The only time it is needed is when you work with Netflix JPEG 2000 masters, that are P3-D65 with PQ, but mxf is tagged. Oh, and also sRGB transfer + P3-D65 are all iPhone photos since iPhone 7.

Do not forget to target pq and bt.2020.

madVR only supports the correct transfer of HDR metadata from Nvidia and AMD GPUs, as it uses their private APIs for this.
There is a workaround for the Intel GPU, but it is very inconvenient to use.

I see. Would you mind pointing me in the direction of the inconvenient workaround please?

I currently have an Intel NUC so wouldn't want to change my whole setup. I would be curious what the workaround is if you can help please. Thanks

Rename your video file like this: "<video name> primaries=bt2020 matrix=bt2020.<extension>"

interesting ....there gotta be a better way to do this tho ....thats kinda ridiculous having to rename your files like that , thats the only way to force BT2020 besides using the hotkey? i hope notUnfortunately I don't know any other way, for the simple reason that what you want is in opposition to the very goal of madVR which is high video fidelity, not making colours inaccurate.

You can use the filename trick in a folder name (e.g. "Z:\Videos\Oversaturated colours primaries=bt2020 matrix=bt2020"), and it will apply to all the videos you put in that folder, to avoid having to rename all files.

Are you ready to edit EDID? For some unknown reason, when Windows HDR mode is activated, it sends metadata from The HDR Static Metadata Data Block to the display device. The essence of the method is to edit this data in such a way that it matches the metadata in HDR video.

I see and it would need to be edited per movie differently? If so, then I can see how that is unfeasible. Do you have any links that describe this method so I can see for myself as well. Thank you.

LG do not advertise any metadata info in edid though.

Okay, you cannot be serious right now. Just -c copy the file and tag it as BT.709 primaries/PQ transfer bt.2020-ncl matrix and limited range. So only primaries changed.

Also gpu-next in mpv does what you want. Even though it selects PQ swapchain it defaults to using srgb and bt.709.

Just target-trc=pq without target-trc=bt.2020

so guess thats a no ....that theres currently a autoforce bt2020 feature besides having to use a hotkey then, that was my request ....having to rename files/folders...or even ...a folder shouldnt have to be , and also i use kodi dsplayer mainly but also potplayer, btw on my OLED setup BT2020 does not oversaturate actually the exact opposite it makes the movies alot more color accurate ...unless folks are into theyre movies/shows looking super undersaturated and black levels being super horrid lol

Care to say why you picked this and not an Nvidia Shield? Their new upscaling appears to be quite good, while I don't think this one does anything special in that regard (but I might be wrong...).

Sorry, I did mean to respond.

Apart from the fact that it just works, and plays just about every HiRes audio format under the sun, the devs are very active and release firmware updates about once a month.

The scaling is very good (IF I want to tweak the picture, I can do that via the video processor in my amp), Dolby Vision and HDR just work, as does auto refresh rate matching.

I really don't miss a PC based solution at all.

Sounds like something is wrong with your setup if you get undersaturated picture with wrong black level without messing with the bt.2020 feature.

This has 100% nothing to do with bt2020.

You misunderstand the process and setup the chain incorrectly.

Do you have a colorimeter ?

Some people just don't want to admit they simply have a preference for oversaturated inaccurate colours. Some guy on YouTube even recommended setting modern TVs to native gamut for everything.
You can admit it, it's fine, just don't blame the software or hardware for not catering to your kink.

Either way, incorrect metadata will be sent to the projector.

On Windows 10, I've observed that when using the Windows HDR API (i.e. HDR enabled in the Windows options, madVR OSD showing "OS HDR" mode), Windows does not transmit the HDR metadata (e.g. maxCLL) from madVR to the display.

However, on Windows 11 they fixed that (in fact that's the main reason I upgraded). On Windows 11, the metadata from madVR is correctly transmitted to the display in OS HDR mode.

I'm using NVidia though. I don't know if the same applies to Intel, but it might be worth a try.

Does this also happen when Windows 10's HDR setting is off?

If the Windows HDR setting is turned off, madVR uses the NVidia (or AMD) HDR API instead of the Windows HDR API, and metadata is correctly transmitted. But there is no such API for Intel. Hence my suggestion to Intel users to try Windows HDR mode on Windows 11.

Theoretically yes.

There is such an API for Intel. This is DXGI (https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/win32/api/dxgi1_5/nf-dxgi1_5-idxgiswapchain4-sethdrmetadata). But madVR does not support it.

And e-t172 said under Windows 11 the OS sent the display the correct HDR metadata that madVR reported, so madVR does support the OS API in some way.be it as it may , still need a proper autoforce solution that dont require a hotkey or folder rename, pleaseThe only way that I see to achieve that is:
1. Use a calibration application to generate a madVR compatible 3DLUT that transforms BT.709 (or any other source gamut, don't ask me details on that) to BT.2020
2. In madVR settings, go to devices => calibration => select "calibrate this display by using external 3DLUT files", and add your BT.2020 3DLUT there

EL as in...?

onekmilesbehind
9th February 2022, 00:18
@ashlar42

EL is short for Enhancement Layer when it comes to Dolby Vision. For profile 7 this is basically the difference between Dolby Vision/dynamic HDR and static HDR (at best). Without the EL, it's not a compliant Dolby Vision bitstream.

It'd be like if manufacturers claimed to support TrueHD Atmos tracks, but dropped the actual Atmos metadata.

EDIT: I should say I have no idea what Zidoo or Dune are actually doing. If they are simply dropping then EL from Dolby Vision content, then that's bad. If they're doing something else with the data, that'd be different.

If they're doing something else with the data, that'd be different. My understanding is that they are ignoring/discarding the FEL (similar to what BR Players do with MEL). There are some files floating around that make it easy to test if a device plays FEL or not and both the Dune and Zidoo (not sure about Zappiti devices but I suspect the same since they are all using same/similar hardware) devices have been proven to not be playing the FEL. You can find more info on avsforum.

anyone else with AMD card having issues triggering HDR mode on TV?, 3 times in the last month its just stopped working completely. the HDR switch in windows still triggers it ok so it not my TV or windows as such, MADVR just isnt triggering. First thing I tried was to delete the MADVR folder and reinstall it with same settings, no, then I wiped it, put version .17 back on and set it all up again, nada. I then reinstalled the latest AMD driver, nothing, I then downgraded the AMD driver, still nothing. Everything is still setup correctlly in MADVR, 10 bit or higher mode and d3d11 for presentation.

Previous two times I did all the same things and it just started working again but i'm not really sure what fixed it.

any ideas?

EDIT: I remembers that last time I did a full DDU reinstall and that worked again, no idea whats causing this but its only been happing since I installed the lates crap driver which also has HEVC rendering issues for me, saldy dropping back to an older version doesnt fix either now so i'm stuck on this shite driver.

How do I watch a 3D video such as intended for Oculus in 2D? Meaning one field only with rectilinear correction. Or maybe it can even be converted for watching with 3D glasses?
