Is this due to the hardware Nvidia Cuda decoding? I activated it for HEVC content, should I disable it for x264 content?
I really don't understand why you don't attempt to answer your own question. You literally just have to untick boxes and see what happens.
You could've answered your question in less time than it took you to write it.

Because this option came to me while writing this message. I spent 1 hour on Madvr last evening trying to understand why aliasing suddenly appeared. I'll try this, indeed.

Hello,
New here. I'm not a native English speaker and I've had a difficult time redacting this. Hope it's clear enough, though.
Well, to the point. I'm having issues with any video file I run in Media Player Classic HC since the latest Windows 10 update to build 1611. I've found that exclusive fullscreen mode isn't working as it should: aspect ratio won't work correctly and the contextual menu won't appear when right-clicking the mouse.
In this screenshot you can see how this file is displayed full-screen in VLC correctly. Notice the black bands at the top and the bottom of the picture. (You can see this screenshot larger if you click on it).

Well, right since the latest update of Windows 10 to build 1611, MPC-HC with Madvr won't display videos correctly in exclusive full-screen mode. Horizontal black bands, like those you can see in the screenshot above, won't be shown and picture will be displayed stretched vertically, looking really wrong. (I've tried to take a screenshot of that same video above, so that you can see the difference for yourselves. But, strangely, screenshots of MPC-HC full-screen look completely normal and don't reproduce the issues present when in exclusive fullscreen during the playback of any video file in MPC-HC with Madvr).
As I said before, not only does the aspect ratio look wrong when in exclusive full-screen mode, but the contextual menu won't be displayed either.
Regards.

what does the OSD say in full screen mode? is it 0,0,1920,1080 -> 0,0,1920,1080
or is it it something else

I'm not sure if you mean this line. It says:

if your screen is 1920x1200 than you "found" the issue it is switching to 1080p.
i don't know if you are using any display mode in the player or madVR but they could be the reason for this.

Yeah, my display is 1920x1200. I'll have a look at both the setup of MPC-HC and Madvr to see if I find what to fix.

I wanted to chime in and back up the others that the new Win10 update definitely did something to FSE. I'm using a really old version of MadVR right now so my behavior may be different, but when I go full screen it's like my TV can't "lock" onto the refresh rate. It usually flickers since my PC desktop is 60Hz and most movies I watch are 24Hz but now the "flicker" I normally see loops about 8 times before I see an image, this takes easily 10-15 seconds. Overlay looks like the solution unfortunately for the time being.

Well as a counter-point... I just finally got version 1607 this week (not sure what version 1611 is...), and I have zero problems with FSE or any other problems that have been reported regarding the Anniversary Update. I do use a x64 filter-chain and player (PotPlayer), but the reports had me very worried. Not sure why there are so many issues, smooth sailing here with the updates.

You were right. In Madvr settings, under devices>My monitor>display modes, I had the following line under "list all display modes madVR may switch to":
1080p60
If you ask me why I applied that line in madVR settings, I can only say that I followed tutorials back in the day to setup madVR because I didn't know, and don't know yet, what the majority of settings are for. :o
I've deleted that line, applied the changes and, voila!, everything is back to normal now. What I cannot understand, however, is why that parameter had started to cause playback issues only after the latest Windows 10 build update, because it had been applied for a long time and prior to that Windows update, i'd never experienced any issues during playback in exclusive fullscreen mode.
Anyway, what matters is that everything is OK now and it was that parameter that was causing the issues, and not the latest Windows 10 build.

Has anyone had success in playing 3d MVC MKVs? I've tried with Intel skylake integrated gpu and nvidia GTX950 and multiple different mvc MKVs and I can't seem to get them to work correctly.
They play in 3d, but its like they get unsynced slightly between the eyes. I'd say maybe 30% of the time, it appears to play correctly for a bit if I don't pause or anything else, but even if I just start the movie and don't touch it, that's no guarantee that it will work correctly.
I'm watching and the 3d is having an effect, but its off slightly and you can see when the scene changes that its not smooth but there is kind of a flash or something

it's most likely video driver related.
your GPU is most likely running in stretch mode and is scale the input frame to 1200p before it was simply keeping the AR so the result was ok.

I am having the same issue with my SkyLake and sometimes can reproduce it with R7 240 (harder to reproduce).
It is not "off slightly" as u state, it is wrong order for left/right eye. And for me it is totally random, it depends on how the movie will start, if it starts with proper order then it will play till the end fine but if it starts with the wrong order then it will stay like that till the end, sometimes moving the mouse or spamming play/pause will fix the order but not always.
U can test it urself to confirm, in case ur tv has an option to switch the order. Simply start the movie and when u see that the order is wrong switch it on ur tv aswell and u will notice that it will play fine. Like i said happens on AMD aswell but not so often.
And before someone says that the left/right order might be wrong as an info inside the .mkv, it also happens during .ssif files playback.

After playing around in madVR some more, I have a question for people who can do this: Is it possible to apply DSR to madVR and MPC-HC ?
DSR is Nvidia's thingy for rendering an image to a larger than screen resolution.
This might come in handy for someone who owns an 1080 card and wants to get a bit more juice from madVR.
Another idea that came to my mind, this was discussed, but can't exactly remember, how would madVR and SLI work together?

You do not want to use DSR with madVR. madVR can do the equivalent of DSR in higher quality, simply set Image Doubling to "always - 2x supersampling" with your algorithm of choice and use SSIM to downscale. It is much higher quality than Nvidia's DSR.
madVR doesn't like SLI at all, it used to be much worse but now there is only a small performance hit with SLI enabled.

Totally forgot about image doubling since my 860m card wasn't able to do it.
[Trying to convince more people to use madVR and they were shocked on the quality improvements, but asked me if we can also increase resolution more than what display can do.]

@kotik and robl45:
Does this 3D Problems happen with all mkv files? have you tried files created with newer version of makemkv? I ask because there where a bug with storing the left/right information in 3D movies.
This bug was fixed since 1.10.2:
Revision history
MakeMKV v1.10.2 (11.9.2016 )
Added support for AACS v62
Improved support for BD-Java discs
Small user interface improvements
Bug fixes:
The 3D left/right MVC view information was not preserved correctly when creating 3D MKV file
Could be worth a try...

Actually if have time and patience to tweak your profiles you pretty able to use image doubling with a 860m gpu... I can use with weaker cards like a 930m.... it's just a matter of finding the right settings... balance the refinements vs doubling and maybe do some overclock... works great with my weaker 930m especially the sxbr brands

Anandtech reports that "the NUC6i5SYK [Skylake] has the most accurate display refresh rates of all the PCs that we have evaluated so far". I can only get 23.979 with 23.976 video material on a Samsung UHD TV that returns a refresh rate of 23.976 with a Haswell NUC D54250WYK.
It doesn't appear to matter which windowed mode I use I can only get 23.979 with the Skylake NUC. My preferred mode for the Haswell NUC is windowed overlay (Windows 7 and newer).
Does anyone have a solution to enable 23.976 playback on the Skylake NUC?

tested now, its definitely not from the eyes flipped, its clearly not syncing correctly. once in a while its correct, then it gets out of sync just slightly. The 3d doesn't look quite right and you can visibly see the scene changes, like one scene is peeling off the screen to the next one.
Tested straight Make MKV rip as well as the usual mvc encoded smaller versions that I normally use. Used lastest mkv this time. Still same issue.

Thanks both for trying. My 23.979 issue may be due to the Intel HD Graphics drivers for the NUC. I am running Windows 7 Professional x64.

Is it possible to somehow render MadVR's output to a file or back into vapoursynth / avisynth or something?
I'm basically looking for a way to encode HDR clips / movies to regular SDR files in the way madVr does the converting / compression. It looks awesome (to me) and that way I can take the movies with me on tablet or in the non-HDR tv in the bedroom.
I'm converting it now manually, and I tweak it manually with a final gamma adjustment and a levels/histogram adjustment to get it looking nice. But madVr's way is nicer, and my way probably works fine for shorter clips but for longer clips or full movies it will look nice in one part but horrible dark or bright in another part :S.

Hey guys!
Spent a lot of time here some years ago, but my setup was stable for some time and I drifted away :(. Good to see some familiar names still here :)
Anyway, just got myself an LG OLED 65 E6 and an RX-460, via a Yamaha 2060, so I'm back at the cutting edge trying to get 4K, high bit-depth etc. all working.
Can I ask a few questions about MadVR as it is now (well I can ask, hopefully someone is happy to answer!)
- How do you know you are getting the right bit depth with D3D9. D3D11 says "(10-bit)" but D3D9 just says "(new path)". 10-bit isn't limited to DX11 is it?
- Trouble is JRiver seems to crash when I close a video with the DX11 path, app just freezes with the final frame and I have to use task manager to kill it. If this is a known issue with a solution it would be great to know :).
Any tips for best settings to use with the 460 and an LG 2016 OLED would also be much appreciated!

That leeperry will find some esoteric setting that he really can't live without, madshi will ask for opinions on it and end up deprecating it thus removing his preferred setting
forcing him to hold on to what he believes is the "perfect" madVR build.

I've seen some of this too. I wonder if the "wait to switch to FSE" needs to be configurable now. Seems to me the delay on my new setup is dangerously close to 3secs and may be longer some times, which might cause trouble.

I don't think so, at least madVR doesn't offer such an interface right now. The best I was able to find to make AviSynth use some of madVR's algorithms was AviSynthShader (https://github.com/mysteryx93/AviSynthShader), but madshi usually makes his own performance and quality tweaks to these algorithms, so it's not really the same. What you're talking about should be possible using shaders, but matching madVR is going to be difficult.
