After more testing with several SD movies, I've gone back to NNEDI3 128 from NGU-high. A large part of my collection is B&W SD, with widely varying source quality.
madshi is right that NGU works best with high-quality sources. My Blu-rays look great with NGU-medium (the most my GTX 1060 can manage for high bitrate sources).
Thank goodness for profiles!

madshi, I'd probably rename NGU-low/medium/high to 1X/2X/3X so that people know that they're passes and not really lower quality.
I'm able to do NGU-low for chroma and doubling luma + chroma w/ Jinc downscaling on my 1080 GTX to 1440p. NGU-med causes my MAX (5s) stats to hit 47ms once in awhile, so it's unacceptable to use it.

not assuming that people don't know what they talking about would be. you're making one wrong assumption after the other instead of conceding that your discussion partner may be as competent as you are and taking him by the word.
Without continuing this discussion too much, if you test then specify you've tested and and post a relevant screenshot to what was stated in the post. And just perhaps if told it's a driver problem with your system, you could believe it rather than focusing on how wrong I am.
the previous version I had was v375.63. before I posted here I did try all the driver versions from the nvidia archive beginning with v359.06 (1.12.2015) with no avail.
Unfortunate, I'd be surprised if all working versions had this issue though or perhaps it's something else related to the system.
your assumption is wrong again. I did put several hours into it before I decided to ask if someone else knew this problem. which did help.
Fair enough, your assumption was wrong also. And yes StinDaWg I know when to use that word, talk about a petty post.

the screenshot in my initial post was relevant to the problem, that's why I posted it. I even explicitily stated that it is not a performance or heat problem, knowing that this will be the first thought of some people. and it's not a question of believe. I just already considered the idea that it might be a driver problem. maybe it is but then it is not something that is specific to a certain version and thanks to your information we know that this can't be the only causing factor since you're using the same driver version without this problem.
Unfortunate, I'd be surprised if all working versions had this issue though or perhaps it's something else related to the system.
well it must be then. perhaps it is the GPU and the factor is more specific than the overall architecture type.
Fair enough, your assumption was wrong also.
I had various theories about the problem that haven't worked out so far. I'm still interested to hear what 32bit player you were using though.

Pays to have what you say and what you link match for reference in future, but that wasn't that big a deal.

It won't be related to the player. I used MPC-BE x86.
Given that this issue occurs with quite different systems in the same area (32 bit OpenCL) it might possibly not be a driver bug. This will not be easy to troubleshoot, I can't recall ever having visual corruption with NNEDI3.
Did you try what huhn suggested? Also did you try running the reset defaults batch file in the madVR directory? I've found this to fix the odd issue like this over the years.
Also, just for the hell of it test madVR 0.87.21 (http://www.videohelp.com/download/madVR08721.zip) & 0.87.0 (http://www.videohelp.com/download/madVR087.zip) which are the first revisions where NNEDI3 made an appearance in case any madVR code changes have affect on the output.

You are not alone. I've had the same problem since the day one when I started usind madVR+LAV with 3d movies. Movie is fine but subtitles are in wrong depth. I've also tried different subtitle engines, original BluRay discs etc. but with no luck. :(
Nice to know that i am not the only one having this issue.

I've this issue, only running Madvr.
Only when reproducing (not in pause) and mostly noticeable on dark background, i've this sort of "flickering" like barely visible translucent horizontal bars. Like a sort of "signal interference". This can't be captured on screenshot.
What could be?

Well NGU seems to be pretty damn awesome. I can use NGU-low for chroma AND both luma and chroma doubling with my AMD HD7850 GPU and the fan isn't even 100%. I know that at least luma doubling is working, because of the obvious quality change, but from what I quickly gathered from this thread, this might not be how it is supposed to be? Should my setup be struggling? OSD seems to be working. Anyways, I'm not using either chroma or chroma doubling NGU other than for testing purposes. However, bilateral-NGU could be interesting, if it's within reasonable performance requirements.
On a personal note, I'm very happy to see NGU to land, since this is probably the first time that even my friends, who don't normally care for picture quality, actually noticed that things on the screen changed when I switched from super-xbr 100 to NGU-low. Can't give higher praise to madshi than that.
@leeperry Looks like you still have your 7850 and 13-series drivers? Could you report some numbers for comparison? I'm on the latest 64bit crimson. Same card.
@ryrynz You saw it necessary to tell me that big screens don't matter, only the distance from the screen. You do have some attitude and nobody is being too much of a dick about it. Let's all be friends, shall we?

Here I'm looking at a 24" screen I'm about 1 1/2 feet away from it.
My 65" TV is about 2 1/2 meters away, my 24" screen encompasses more of my vision than the 65" TV does and I can resolve more detail too.

DO NOT install SVP on Pascal GPUs based setups!!!!!!!
I made the ugly mistake of trying to use SVP on an 1080, madVR + mpcHC setup. That thing broke my drivers, I alost had to reinstall windows. After uninstalling it, madVR and MPC HC kept crashing, even reinstalling them, erasing all registry entries did not fix it.
Keep in mind, SVP breaks the Nvidia driver entirely!
On NGU, I don't use it until the coil whine will maybe get a fix. I'm scared of why no game and nothing else causes coil whine, but madVR w/ NGU does, so I'll just use it after this gets solved...

weird. with these versions I can tell madVR to use NNEDI but it just refuses to do so. the picture is not affected at all (just plain image upscaling) and in the OSD NNEDI isn't mentioned.
I reinstalled the current version and used GPU-Z to see if there is something noticeable with the sensor data. but all is fine, no value reaches the limit when using NNEDI.

It's not something that can be fixed, it's related to the stress placed on the components and the vibration they create as a result of it, it's not overloading anything it's just not ideal design.
As a result you either give your card possibly more performance headroom (overclock) and see if that changes anything or just use another option that generates less stress. As advised above try the low setting.

Dig deeper, SVP team advises clearly to NOT install SVP with recent Nvidia drivers, they break the drivers, performance goes a lot down for the entire card.
http://www.svp-team.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=2671
It's something that I found on an easy search after I had a few black screens, but it gets worse, it can cause GPU to disconnect and eventually break down - this is known by SVP team and has been for a while, but they did NOT fix it yet.
what?
See above, SVP is not to be used with Nvidia drivers.

Actually, this is one of the problems, I can play most games at super ultra mega resolutions and fps and quality settings, and there is no coil whine. I can play videos at NNEDI 256 and there is no coil whine. NGU causes coil whine even at low for me, and I've no idea why... I'm just scared of coil whine to be honest.
I'm going to be fair, NGU does not stress the GPU too much, it's only the coil whine that scares me. The algorithm is quite efficient actually.
I noticed a similar effect when applying very heavy FX on very large images (>8000x8000 pixels) in photoshop...
Will keep testing.

Let's see, I will try playing with vSync and GSync - I usually have both turned off since they're a pain to see, maybe fast Vsync could fix the problem....
Queues are max possible, I think I have not tried software decoding yet, just to keep presenting times as low as possible.
An issue like coil whine must be why I'm not compelled to buy expensive GPUs, that and unnecessarily loud cooling systems. I can only assume people are protective of their investment to blame MadVR on coil whine.
It's only NGU and some really specific tasks that cause coil whine... A GPU is a tool made to be used to achieve something, if it fails achieveing it's purpose, it's not worth the bother. But at this rate, I don't want destroy-ing the GPU if I can avoid it. If only a specific task stresses the GPU in the way necessary to create coil whine, maybe that specific task is best to be avoided. Something like I fear it can break just a tiny piece on the GPU while it does not stress the GPU very bad...

Coil whine is not dangerous, it's just annoying. Simply what happens is vibration of inductor it doesn't increase the temperature or lowers GPU life.

At the same time, I know for a fact that SVP broke my Nvidia drivers a few times, tried configuring it, still happens.
What happens is a video plays, but it crashes at random times. IT keeps on crashing even after uninstalling SVP.
This is a known problem over at SVP, whether you can find it or not is a matter of what you searched for. This happened to me on multiple configurations with multiple settings even on default settings(GTX 960M, GTX 1080), with or without any OC.

Simply no. Nothing is degrading faster. Coil whine means there is a quality issue on the manufacturers side who decided to choose components which are cheap and more prone to such issues. Coil whine is not affecting performance, heat, stability, function and so on. It is simply going on your nerves when too loud. It can be dependant on the load (amount of load and sort of load) as seen here. NGU probably creates a sort of load that triggers this phenomenon easier than other algorithms. Sounds like esoteric but can be physically possible.
I have a R7 250 Radeon card, can use NGU low for my use case (720p files) and have NO coil whine (XFX card).
If I would have coil whine I would try to fix it as mentioned earlier in this thread.

I've not ever had that issue after upgrading to Win10.
For every update to NVidia, I've always chosen the Clean Install and rebooted to ensure things go smoothly.
I don't use Cuvid, not for a long time.
It's always been set to DXVA2 CB.
With current driver for NVidia on my GTX 750ti, I can use NGU-low on 1080p sources and SVP without frame drops.
The minute I try NGU-med, I get drops.
Maybe if I disable the Artifact Removal settings, I can use NGU-med.

Nice to hear from someone that understands electronics. I suspected these fears of coil whine were overblown. Especially now considering the fairly short practical lifespan of a graphics card.

I think I made a made a post with interesting (I think) stats which can allows users to verify if normal behavior or not. Already 10 pages away. Won't do this again. :D
don't let this big thread discourage you. I'm pretty sure based on madshis posts that he reads everything. and many other users do also, it's just that somtimes there isn't anything to add or say to a post, even if it shares interesting information.

Someone please sticky this!!!!!
I have exactly that setup GTX 1080 + madVR + mpcHC/mpcBE + SVP4 and is working flawlessly :D
Both on 32&64 bits setups btw.

Does "NGU = Jinc" etc. in the OSD mean madvr is reverting to Jinc instead of using NGU (for whatever reason)?
Do you mean "NGU > Jinc" ?
because that simply means you upscale to more than double resolution...
like a 720p video on a 2160p screen, you first double to 1440p with NGU and then upscale to 2160p with Jinc...
