Can any part of the new feature set, be used to prevent scaling when the video size is a few pixels smaller than the display size?

For example, videos of 1916 x 1076 or 1912 x 1072 - which for some reason are used by some commercial download sites. This scaling of less than 1% larger, is quite GPU intensive and results would be far better with no scaling. But it would have to still be reported to the player as 1920x1080 otherwise the video drivers would scale (since that scaling cannot be disabled due to the PC being used for other purposed besides media players).

there is an option called "disable scaling if image size changes by only:"

that should do that. and media player could always do things like that like MPC HC video frame- > normal

I've tried using touch window from outside and stretch to window but both have no effect, the osd shows touch window from inside and the black bars remain visible. I'm using the latest 64bit nightly build, zooming the bars away works but zooms in and cuts off the subtitles which of course you don't want.

Here is a sample, re-encoded (cropped and re-sized to 1920*1080) that shows the result I'm after, use stretch to window.

Not an ideal solution but works as expected, It's not a big deal but would be handy if you could add the ability to simply crop the black bars away completely when you have time.

Hey,

I use JRiver Media Center 20 with Red October HQ mode, so madVR.

I have a weird issue with display mode changer in that it just kills the video driver (NVIDIA GTX 750 Ti) which requires a reboot to fix.

I can use the NVIDIA Control Panel to switch to the resolutions I'm using in display mode, so it appears to be a madVR issue (or JRiver Media Center).

I'm running Window 10 x64.

On this subject, could someone help me achieve my goal: my display's native resolution is 1024x768 (it's a Panasonic Pro series panel) so I would like to get the best experience.

I also use Amazon Prime Video from this PC and setting the desktop resolution to 1024x768 results in big bars top and bottom in the Amazon video player, so I have it set to 1366x768. I'm told I should get madVR to only switch to 1024x768, but this results in a small, square video in the middle of the screen when using JRiver.

Can someone help me get it setup properly?

Hi Madshi!

I updated Seven to Windows 10 (not a clean installation but using Windows mode) and I got a strange issue using MadVR with MPC-HC and the same settings.

When the player switches to exclusive mode seems like that the resolution changes to 60 Hz form 25 because the CRT projector goes to the appropriated memory bank; if I leave the exclusive mode visualizing the menu (or the seek bar, ecc.) the CRT goes back to the 50 Hz memory back.

Unchecking the Exclusive Mode from MadVR options everything goes smooth and the visualization remains in the same memory bank where started.

I didn't change any settings in MPC-HC and MadVr, and the automatic changes in the Fullscreen option menu of MPC-HC is unchecked.

The feature "restore original display mode when media player leaves fullscreen" is not working for me with MPC-HC + LAV codecs (x64). The refresh rate only changes on playback stop. If I manually leave fullscreen during playback or pause, the refresh rate stays on that of the movie and won't change to the original ever, unless I do it via NVIDIA Control panel myself.

madshi > i've thought the same, but downgrading driver before the windows 10 verdion doesn't help. :(

I got this exact same problem after updating to Windows 10. I "fixed" it by setting prepresented frames to 3 (4 or higher causes it to break again). Even though 3 is stupidly low, I don't get glitches or dropped frames, and smooth motion seems to be working as intended.

In other news, updating to windows 10 has magically fixed my crashes when turning on error diffusion and nnedi3. Yay!

In windows 10 nnedi3 can't be used(for now)
So if u select nnedi3,instead Jinc is used.
Check OSD (Ctrl+J) for active scaler.

Edit:I totally forgot about AMD

Nope. It's being used. ATI on windows 10 works just fine for nnedi3.

NNEDI3 image doubling does not work on all ATI/AMD with Windows 10. I Haven't been able to get NNEDI3 to work with my AMD R7 265 since I updated to Windows 10. Worked just fine with Windows 8.1 though. I would be interested to know if anyone with one of the newer re-branded Pitcairn GPU's are having similar issues as I am having?

I'll try to explain my self.
If running my display in 1920x1080@60 and madVR 10bit (or higher) present queue never gets filled (1-8 / 8) the same with render queue (1-8 / 8) Upload queue is fine (7-8 / 8

If running my display in 1920x1080@23 and madVR 10bit (or higher), then no problems.

and

If running my display in 1920x1080@60 and madVR 8bit, then no problems.

EDIT: Render times: around 5ms, present going crazy 13ms at 1920x1080@60 10bit and 0.10 at 1920x1080@60 8bit and 1920x1080@23 10bit

d3d11 was quite broken but i haven't used it in a while. so yes.

i had to use special present queues to make d3d11 work without tearing.

I'd just assume that there are plenty of bugs both in AMD & NV drivers on Windows 10 (maybe AMD is a bit worse after reading here).
With Maxwell on Windows 10 and 353.49 driver, it seems best to use D3D9 renderer, D3D11 gives me sometimes weird judder when opening a new video without closing MPC HC first.

A very small bug in madvr:

In the settings dialog, under processing, image enhancements, LumaSharpen, the value for clamp is 0.035 after a fresh install. If you push the restore defaults button on the image enhancements page, the value changes to 0.010. So either the restore defaults button should make clamp 0.035, or the fresh settings should have the value as 0.010.

Got it working after updating Nvidia Drivers to 355.82, the issue was or seems to have been with the set windows installed. Not sure how it was over-ridden, but I ended up with a copy from Windows update.

Can you send me your exact madVR settings, and maybe a sample video with which the problem occurs? Then I'll try to reproduce it here. Also please let me know which LAV settings you're using (software decoding or copyback or native DXVA or ...).

The madVR settings are stored in "madVR\settings.bin", if madVR has write access to that folder. Or in HKCU\Software\madshi\madVR\Settings otherwise.

Also I think banding is unbalanced, low is almost no-op.
In a 10/10 scale is as if low was 2, mid was 4 or 5 and high 10, Whereas something more balanced could be 3, 6, 10.
I suggest to raise "low" one notch, and "mid" one or two notches above.

Also thinking out loud here, but could it be possible to add some "software" based anti-strobing effect, I mean I see how I could use it for "cinema mode". I know some Smart TV's have the option but it is actually hidden, not very self explanatory nor very accessible for the daily use, so having it set in madVR software with rules could be a nice addition. This would involve inserting a black frame every other source frame, then the TV changing to this framerate mode (47.95FPS for films). Have I said something stupid or could this actually work?

edit: btw I get constant frame drops when changing from display to another, as if madVR didn't unhooked the video drivers at all. That is watch a movie on TV, close the player, switch to monitor (other resolution, color profile, etc), play a video, major frame drops... it eventually fixes after playing some videos or so but it's annoying.

Having something similar here where second display get frame dropped (render queue report or 0-1 1-2 iirc). That is .8901. Revert back to .8816 and no issue.

I see didn't know it was version dependent, I update periodically (although for now have stuck to 0.88.21) and I seem to always get the frame drops.

Can anyone please test for video freezing after pause and unpause several times.
I will try to find in what version this appeared.

Okay, found it.
89.0 introduced it, 88.21 is OK.

Try pause and unpause (space bar) repeatedly and look at the Play/Pause OSD.
The OSD should stop responding, and when you pause the OSD will stay/show "Play" even though the video is paused.
Now unpause and the video will freeze.
Wait 10 seconds and pause and unpause the video, you should see the video speed up to its current position.

I'll take a wild guess and point the finger at this:
* increased seek "black screen protection" to 2 seconds (formerly 1)

EDIT 2:
It happens only in Overlay Mode.
madVR sometimes shows something in RED font and disappears very quickly, I can't read it.
MPC-HC sometimes crashes at opening (without loading a movie).

Last month I bought a 4K monitor and i've noticed 1080p vidoeos aren't quite as crystal clear as they were on my AOC 1080 monitor using Potplayer, and upon using MadVR my GPU went haywire.

I have a Sapphire Radeon R9 270x, so I figured i'll upgrade. Now I was thinking of a GTX 970, but as i'm trying to upscale to 4K, do I need something with a bit more power? I don't game at all, just watch videos. Any recommendations?

I was eyeing the 980ti but that seems extreme overkill (and wallet killing), though I believe MadVR is very taxing on the graphics card.

super-xbr combined with SuperRes 2:0.7 results in hotter gpu (== more fan noise) for me compared to nnedi3@64 alone (no SuperRes). Render times are about 10ms faster with super-xbr & SuperRes combination, so I am not sure why GPU is warming up quite a bit more. Any ideas? This is for a 1080->2160@23Hz upscale on a GTX970 and Win7.

Different shaders lead to different power consumption.
The GPU load display doesn't give information how well certain parts of the GPU are used. A high power consumption is a sign of high ALU load.

If you aren't into gaming then a GTX 960 would be a better choice. The GM Maxwell 206 chip has superior decoding capabilities(h265/HEVC at 60Hz 10bit Main Profile). 4k videos works fine with GTX 960 ,no problems comparing to a GTX 970.

Probably fastest for this task would be a Fury card. But I'd wait first and see if the fix for NNEDI3 NV will also fix the PCIe copyback issue with it on AMD.

The GTX 960 is pretty slow, it will not be able to do NNEDI3, but it does support HDCP 2.2 on its HDMI 2.0, unlike any other GPU currently available.

Yes, they will not do NNEDI3 720p -> 1080p. I am not sure about SD but I would trust huhn. However, if "SD" includes 1024x576 DVD rips I would expect some of those cards to be a bit too slow.

the 128 bit isn't very important for performance using madVR. back in the days card without 128 bit GDDR5 had a very bad price/performance ratio.

i'm pretty sure my old 6770 was able to use 64 neuron for SD upscales and pretty sure 16 worked to for 720 -> 1080 23hz. but i don't use this card anymore.

new cards below the r7 250x aren't worth there money anymore things changed...

7700 and r7 250x are both Cape Verde the r7 240 is all ready down to half the performance and there is at least one r7 240 with 128 bit GDDR5 so i'm wrong to day ^^ but 16 neuron shouldn't be impossible for SD so maybe it still counts...
the 7770 should work.

there is a chance nnedi3 will get a lot faster for AMD cards soon.

Aren't the Fury cards power hogs? At their price the 980ti seems like better value to me overall. Bit of a shame the 970/980 didn't get the same HTPC features as the 960.

I definitely need to upgrade my 270x though. Using any reasonable enhancement in any of the Chroma options makes my card sound like a jet engine, and on 4K videos it causes huge stuttering. I'm not even sure what it's doing to 4K videos either tbh, they don't need to be upscaled or really improved in quality.

The 980 (non ti) seems the sweet spot for me at the moment. Not too overkill like the Ti but can handle the extra grunt for 4K over a 970. I just don't want to spend money on one of these expensive cards only to find out it struggles at 4K res though, and I know for Gamers no single GPU can handle 60FPS at the moment.

Aren't the Fury cards power hogs? At their price the 980ti seems like better value to me overall. Bit of a shame the 970/980 didn't get the same HTPC features as the 960.

The Fury Nano has 8.2 TFlops@185W TDP.
I could imagine that the theoretical computing performance is not unimportant for NNEDI3 or SuperRes.
However, it's not actually proven yet, so I might be wrong.


The 980 (non ti) seems the sweet spot for me at the moment. Not too overkill like the Ti but can handle the extra grunt for 4K over a 970.

Hm, I don't think there's much of a difference between 980 and 970. Also 970 can do 1080p30 -> 4k with 64 neurons and 980 still can't do 1080p60 -> 4k 64 neurons.
I think someone here with a 980 Ti wrote that it would be possible. But probably even Adaptive Sharpen on top of that would be too much again.

This happened last generation too. The mid range cards are newer chips.
Pascal is going to be a big deal so expect at least twice the performance, it's due mid next year, so it's not that far off.

I'm avoiding the Nano for a few reasons - Noticeable coil whine, ridiculous price in line with a Ti or Fury X and no HDMI 2.0.

I've never had an Nvidia card but Maxwell has really made me want to change. Problem is i'm very late to the party.

Best to wait then? I'm a bit bad when I get an itch to upgrade, I end up doing it without really thinking it through. I did the same with an X99 system just four months ago fully well knowing Skylake was just around the corner, but thankfully that's one upgrade I don't regret. :)

I guess for the time being i'll just have to tweak my MadVR settings to go easy on the GPU and wait for next year. I'll read up the MikeJung Wiki guide for easy tweaking.

Don't think a 960 is much of a jump from my 270x tbh.

I don't think that coil whine is a huge issue for madVR. It usually gets loudest when there is very high GPU load or very high fps.
I had a MSI 970 Gaming and coil whine in madVR was mainly only an issue because I used a custom fan curve which made the fans almost totally silent, even under high load.
Coil whine is there, but I think you must be sitting really close to the card to get annoyed by it while watching a movie.

I wouldn't reommend to buy the MSI 980 Gaming for madVR, its second fan runs with much higher rpm than the first one and can't be controlled well via software like Afterburner.
The card may seem tempting, since newer MSI cards than the 970 Gaming usually seem to be excellent regarding low coil whine, but the fan issue of the 980 is a real game breaker.

According to user reports, it's possible again with the 980 Ti Gaming to fully control both fans again via software.

I think you should either wait or buy a GTX 970, if it's not for gaming (because of the crippled VRAM which I personally call fraud by Nvidia). The MSI 970 Gaming is really ultra-silent with custom fan curve, apart from some coil whine, and quite powerful for madVR.

madVR is very similar to normal games. My overclocked 980 Ti (1354 Mhz) can do NNEDI3 64 1080p doubling to 4K (<30ms) but not with many other slow options.

Image upscaling is set to Jinc AR (it is used for chroma doubling). No trade quality for performance options. DX11 with present a frame for every VSync checked. Nothing checked in artifact removal, image enhancements, or upscaling refinement. Smooth motion Off. Ordered Dithering.

Setting 5 drops frames (1290 MHz, 93% usage)
Setting 6 has no dropped frames (1468 MHz, 84% usage)

1316 v.s. 1290 MHz is due to throttling when load keeps it above 66°C and it is not overclocked.
I am using a custom BIOS on this G1, it is slightly down-volted. The normal stock G1 runs at 1341 MHz when throttling due to temperature.

Sorry for the lack of a 4K display. I hope the data set makes sense. :o

Thanks guys. I've decided i'm going to wait till Pascal arrives to reap the benefits of 4K. No point spending a fortune on a card now if even the best card is still handicapped on the higher settings.
