Superres 3 for 720p->1080p is not oversharp and is pretty great. However, I agree that superres 480p->1080p is bad at 3 (or anything, really).

That sounds backwards. I find SuperRes (1) is good for 720p -> 1080p.

I use MCE Controller to send the MadVR keybord shortcuts using iRule. Works great :).

Can anyone tell me how I get keyboard controls for all the six sharpness settings and the Anamorphic stretch please, they are not listed at all in the shortcut list?

I want to operate these settings from our ipad, but need the keyboard control first.

Many thanks, that worked!
All I need now is Warner to check my logs and hopefully get these dropped frames and settings cleaned up...

Ok I have the sharpness and anamorphic stretch now working from my ipad but the notifications pop up on the top left hand corner for the profiles created. Is there a way to turn these OFF please, I don't want them to show?

As we have a movie club I don't want to inflict these notifications to my audience..... ;)

Can't you switch off the OSD entirely in the player?

do you have a sample?

Here are 2 samples, but they are at 30fps and they are a bit more than 200MB each... I hope that's OK.

Killing Floor 2 Test (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/93831976/Games/Videos/Killing%20Floor%202%20Test.mp4)
Broforce Test (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/93831976/Games/Videos/Broforce%20Test.mp4)

Are such recordings OK to use as samples / examples?

I use the latest stable MPC-HC x86, the latest LAV Filter 0.68 x86, the latest ReClock x86. kHere are my madVR 0.90.17 Settings:

I'm stuck on a phone again so I can't look at your rendering stats.

If all of your queues are full during playback and your rendering time is 35-37 ms, everything should be normal. I would use the settings that give you the fewest dropped frames.

It might be a problem with JRiver or madVR.

Sorry about that Warner, Im now using Google Drive...
The dropped frames are at the beginning if I set banding higher than low/low

I am using 60Hz for everything

I am bitstreaming and prefer to stay this way for Atmos etc

Again my build is:

CPU: Intel Skylake Core i7 6700 3.4Ghz
Motherboard: Asus H170M-PLUS Intel H170
Memory: 16GB 2133MHz DDR4
Video: Asus STRIX GTX 970 DirectCU II Overclocked 4GB GDDR5
Optical drive: ASUS BC-12D2HT 12x Blu-ray Reader
Storage: Crucial BX100 250GB SATA3 2.5" SSD

Here you go, can you tell me what might be wrong...

That's very odd, but when I click on the attachment here it opens in a new window. Can others test it for us please?

Oh dear, I must be doing it wrong from google drive:(

Finally I have it working, hopefully now someone maybe Warner can check if my settings are wrong?

When you say its ok to have a few dropped frames, what is acceptable?
Do you check the number say after 30mins or what?

Can't you switch off the OSD entirely in the player?

This doesn't work, I have all the notification settings to off in JRiver.

I want to turn OFF the notifications that show when making profiles in madvr, I have them showing in the top left corner.

JRiver osd option is different to the madvr one. They work independently.
The pop ups aren't in the player they are in the encoder which is under madvr control. These are the pop ups I need to turn off.

Can someone tell me how to turn off the pop ups in madvr please?

all seens ok, things you can do that can help is increase the gpu queue or lower the present queue, like all to 8, i think the present queue higher than the render queue can cause frame drops and glitches... on trade quality options you can check the don ´t render frames when fade out/ fade in is detected this option uncheck requires higher queues... and can cause frame drops.... and you can use fullscreen exclusive mode that prevents frame droping, but in d3d11 this requires smaleer queues like 6 on present queue because at higher queues can cause a audio video desync issues

Here are 2 samples, but they are at 30fps and they are a bit more than 200MB each... I hope that's OK.

Killing Floor 2 Test (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/93831976/Games/Videos/Killing%20Floor%202%20Test.mp4)
Broforce Test (https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/93831976/Games/Videos/Broforce%20Test.mp4)

Are such recordings OK to use as samples / examples?

I use the latest stable MPC-HC x86, the latest LAV Filter 0.68 x86, the latest ReClock x86. kHere are my madVR 0.90.17 Settings:

For the best image quality, should I:

there are 60 and 30 fps files.
and you said you have problems with 23/24p

Can the actual rips influence performance? My rig does Image Doubling - Luma with NNEDI3 32n SuperSampling always enabled on most 1080p 23-24p BD's and rips I made, but some specific rips stutter heavily with SuperSaming enabled with identical 23-24p 1080p content using identical rip settings and H.264 encoder settings... I obviously use the same madVR settings for both rip types - the ones that stutter with SS and the ones that do not.

so yeah more FPS needs more processing power.
these are not even H264 even through that shouldn't matter for madVR it self.

all seens ok, things you can do that can help is increase the gpu queue or lower the present queue, like all to 8, i think the present queue higher than the render queue can cause frame drops and glitches... on trade quality options you can check the don ´t render frames when fade out/ fade in is detected this option uncheck requires higher queues... and can cause frame drops.... and you can use fullscreen exclusive mode that prevents frame droping, but in d3d11 this requires smaleer queues like 6 on present queue because at higher queues can cause a audio video desync issues

Thank you so much Carlos, I will change my settings to yours and report back...:)

This is a great result Carlos using your settings.... No dropped frames no presentation glitches even after playing a ripped BD for 25 mins, the attachment was taken 25 mins after start.

I changed the present queue to 6 frames in advance, ticked don't render frames when fade in fade out, use full screen exclusive mode, and since I have D3D11 on I lowered from 12 frames in advance to 6 like you suggested.

The only thing I noticed was a bit of a double flash image on the fadeout of the films logo. The logo faded out, then its text flashed on and off a couple of times then faded out again... Is this due to being in exclusive mode?

But apart from that these results look great, its running as smooth as butter wow!

Update:
Just checked film and Ive been now been running 55mins and still zero frame drops and presentation glitches, this is amazing!
Also I was able to reset banding higher back up to med/high and no frame drops, so all looks great to me!
Thank you Carlos, you really know your stuff!

OK, I can make 24p H.264 recording like that too and it will stutter with 2x Luma SuperSampling, and yet OTHER videos at 30p or 23/24p do NOT stutter. Why is that?

I almost always uses 3dlut and doubling+sr, thing that affect performance for me can be

1. black bar, black bar reduce render time. Haven't really test black bar vs cropped though.

2. Some scenes just have performance spike for w.e reason. I have 1080 60i tv rip from several sources (so individually ripped) and they all have spike at the same scene. This scene seems to be fast panning iirc? cant exactly remember now.

3. a 1080i60 bluray tend to have lower render time compare to said tv rip. It seems that compression artifact(or artifact in general) can increase render time?

Ok I have the sharpness and anamorphic stretch now working from my ipad but the notifications pop up on the top left hand corner for the profiles created. Is there a way to turn these OFF please, I don't want them to show?

As we have a movie club I don't want to inflict these notifications to my audience..... ;)

Then don't change settings while you're watching a movie.

Interesting that with the previous Nvidia driver performance got worse when updating from 09.15 to 09.17 but simply updating the driver shaved off up to 7 ms. Never noticed such a dramatic difference before. Pays off to keep everything up to date, I guess! (I'm using GTX 960 and Win10.)

How does black bar affect anything? It's purely black. Are you saying some videos actually have the black bar as a part of the video image and other videos simply have black bars applied to them by the player or renderer to make them fit the format?

Yeah, the regular drivers from the Nvidia site.

I believe it was driver version 362.00 that to my surprise worked badly with madVR 09.17, even though no settings had been changed and everything was fine on 09.15.

Then, lo and behold, updating to driver version 364.72 (released this Monday) fixed everything, which was a major relief because I was just about to give in and start fine-tuning my madVR settings AGAIN for each profile.

Yes its not a big issue for most in a non professional sense. But we have a film club and try to emulate cinema presentation which doesn't show notifications on the screen to the audience when a change is made going from 1.85 to scope.

Currently we do our anamorphic stretch with the projector, but since madvr has been so incredible image wise we want to change over to its anamorphic stretch. If its not a high priority we may have to leave the madvr stretch off and continue to use the projectors stretch.

Still a bit confused why anyone even wants a notification on this one anyway, you visually see the stretch happening on the screen, you don't need to be also reminded of it with a notification on the top left corner....

This has been one of the main grips with projectors that use zoom memory, the notification comes up on the screen, everyone complains about it in the forums, they want an on/off button....

You could always ask for a refund and besides mVR should come with a license for commercial use IMO, for instance the upscales I see in the news look like junk huh! They show you close-ups of dangerous ppl extracted from CCTV and you can barely see anything, these ppl should use NNEDI3+SR+SSIM duh :sly:

These notifications are indeed darn annoying but madshi doesn't mind them and we should consider that he's kind enough to share his work with us for free, he's the one to please and he seemingly likes them......someday in a few years an option to disable them might arrive, just don't hold your breath ^^

I cant ask for a refund when I didn't pay for madvr.

I certainly don't mind paying for anything especially AV. There is a whole bunch of people on forums that don't want to pay for anything, I even paid the optional fee for MakeMKV, the developer should get something for all his hard work, why should I expect anything for free in life???

I paid for JRiver as I was sick of the free Kodi with issues. If I had to pay for madvr bring it on, Im more than happy to pay for it. Madshi should be paid by all of us, whats wrong with that?

If Madshi wants to give me a button to turn off the notifications Ill pay today! :thanks:

I noticed when I turn it off I get dropped frames, when its on everything sits on zero dropped frames.
The only thing I don't like about it is the flashing on and off when touching any settings....

But I really need to understand what else is it really doing for me beside stopping the odd dropped frames....

I do notice you have to use Window mode all the time don't you, even with Exclusive mode?
When I turn OFF window mode I get lots of dropped frames....
Still learning all this stuff...

But I must admit I have an image from heaven using madvr with Jriver ;)
When I go to scope on my 145" wide screen using the RS600 projector its truly breath-taking, my image is 500% better than when I was using Kodi. Madvr has given me an image to die for, Im almost speechless watching all my 800 BDs over agin...Thank you madshi for this magic of yours!

However I will continue to use the JVC stretch as I don't want to see these notifications for A stretch using madvr. Im sure madvr probably does the stretch way better than the JVC but at this point in time I cant tell ;)

Exclusive mode is a different way to use Direct3D, madVR has "exclusive" access to the screen so it has more control over how frames are displayed but nothing else can be displayed. This is why it usually has better performance. The flicker is simply how the GPU driver switches modes. :(

Do you mean "enable windowed overlay"? This is also a different mode, this option does not affect full screen playback if "Full Screen Exclusive" is also enabled, Full Screen Exclusive is used when full screen instead. Windowed Overlay is not an exclusive mode but it is a fairly low-level hardware video overlay mode. It bypasses much of the OS, including the 1D calibration LUTs from the ICC profile and screenshots are impossible when using it.

70mm please continue with your feedback. I too use Jriver with madVR and love it. Although your gripes might appear minor in the grand scheme of technical things from a commercial product perspective they are very valuable. I help create products and no matter how much more I want to show my prospective customers the art of the possible and to go beyond their reference of thinking - ultimately if its a pain to use or is just plain annoying it really doesn't matter how fantastic my product is ...

b) Do you consider the anti-bloating and anti-ringing options useful for SuperRes? I think anti-bloating might not be beneficial here, but I'd like to hear your opinion. Do you see any benefit in the anti-ringing option? SuperRes already didn't ring that much, so I wonder if the separate anti-ringing post processing option is worthwhile in your opinion or not?

Yes, anti-ringing makes a difference. It's not a huge difference but it avoids some ringing with SuperRes so I think you should keep this option.

c) Do you consider the "anti-bloating" filter useful for SSIM downscaling? If so, which strength settings do you like?

I didn't find an example where the anti-bloating filter makes a difference vs simply a lower SSIM value.

d) Which of the two anti-ringing options do you prefer for downscaling? (Edit: FYI, these options do *not* affect SSIM downscaling)

I didn't find an example where I found a difference regarding sharpness between these two options so I would choose the strict option to avoid ringing as much as possible. But I use a UHD TV so downscaling is not very easy to test for me, I don't have a lot of samples

Hey Madashi, I'm getting a blank screen maybe 10% of the time when switching to fullscreen exclusive mode. The player does not crash but, it does freeze my whole computer for about 20- 30 seconds then suddenly it starts working. I've only noticed it since 90.16 was released.

I'm using the latest nvidia driver on windows 10 64bit, mpc-hc, lav and reclock

Anyone else run into this issue?

Madashi I've spent hours with the latest build and these are the conclusions I've reached to your questions.

a) Do you consider the "anti-bloating" filter useful for sharpening (LumaSharpen + AdaptiveSharpen)? If so, which strength settings do you like?

- I do find antibloat useful for Adaptive sharpen 0.7 + crispen edges 1.0. It helps remove the paintbrush effect. I've settled on a strength of 125 for upscaling 720p content

b) Do you consider the anti-bloating and anti-ringing options useful for SuperRes? I think anti-bloating might not be beneficial here, but I'd like to hear your opinion. Do you see any benefit in the anti-ringing option? SuperRes already didn't ring that much, so I wonder if the separate anti-ringing post processing option is worthwhile in your opinion or not?

- I've experimented with this on and off and if there is a benefit I'm having a hard time picking it out. I use super res 2 for 720p content anything higher is to aggressive

c) Do you consider the "anti-bloating" filter useful for SSIM downscaling? If so, which strength settings do you like?

- YES but only when SSIM is at a strength of 100%. Otherwise you lose to much detail. Currently using at a strength of 100%. Anything higher and it cancels out the benefit of SSIM, IMO

d) Which of the two anti-ringing options do you prefer for downscaling? (Edit: FYI, these options do *not* affect SSIM downscaling)

- Relaxed. I have a panasonic VT series plasma and some are reporting they can see no difference. I can see a noticeable difference and relaxed retains more detail. strict is to aggressive. Relaxed does a good job of limiting ringing while retaining detail.

:thanks:

Try a clean install or roll back to a previous driver (always use clean) There have been some problems with the latest driver from Nvidia but whether your issues are related to that or just a messy install you'll have to find out but I haven't seen anyone with that issue.

If you want to preserve everything, then don't remux it at all. Muxing into m2ts will lose pretty much all special metadata. Its not inside the m2ts on the Blu-ray, but in the playlist metadata files.

Guys, try out Bilateral with SR2 for chroma. I'm really quite liking it for film content, but haven't tried it for cartoons yet.

The drawback with bilateral has always been that the algorithm sucks very badly whenever there isn't information in the luma channel to refine the chroma channel, resulting in what looks like dithered, noisy edges. However, superres is able to "fix" some of those bad edges at the cost of the crispness of the well-reconstructed edges. The result is something pretty close to nnedi or SXBR, but with less source ringing and much thinner edges. Anyways, here's some screenshots. This is chroma channel only, comparing bilateral SR2 to nnedi64. I have nnedi64 with and without SR2 in case people think the sharpness is from SR.

Am I the only one who has trouble with SSIM 2D (and forget about Reconstruction, the biggest resource hog of the lot)? The usage spikes big time over SSIM 1D.

On another note - I made the mistake of opening a 4K 60fps vid I had in my downloads, probably the one off Youtube... constant dropped frames. MadVR isn't needed with those videos I know, but I am curious why when my 980ti was only at 80-90% usage it was dropping a number of frames each second. Surely that only happens when the GPU is hitting 100%?
